Roundup of VR & AR Announcements from WWDC

1) Apple announces VR Ready Computers

Thanks to Apple updating Metal, their graphics API, to Metal 2, in their new macOS called macOS High Sierra, VR is coming to Mac. Metal 2 can bring up to a 10x increase in draw call throughput over the original, the company says, and it will include a VR-optimized display pipeline.

iMac

The new 27-inch iMac will be the only computer in the new iMac lineup to be VR Ready, thanks to the inclusion of an AMD Radeon Pro 580 GPU.

People are doubting it’s ability to run the HTC Vive on the computer, but Apple does claim you can edit 360º video content and create 3D VR content.

iMac Pro

A new ultra-high end version of the Mac which will offer more powerful processors and AMD’s latest Vega graphics. It will cost $4999 and launch in December 2017

Macbook

Apple will be offering an external graphics enclosure with an AMD Radeon RX 580 GPU which will connect to Macbooks via Thunderbolt.

Sadly, this won’t launch until Spring 2018 :(

2) SteamVR and HTC Vive on Mac OS

While Steam has been Mac compatible for some time now, Apple announced that Valve will be bringing SteamVR to Mac too, allowing the HTC Vive to run VR games on Mac systems.

Also, Apple is offering $100 discount on HTC Vive systems for Apple Developers, if they order an External Graphics Development Kit. (See above tweet).

3) Apple is pushing forward VR Creation Tools

Apple is updating their professional video editing application, Final Cut Pro X, to support 360 degree video editing.

Apple also says that both Unity and Unreal Engine will support their VR SDKs on Mac, allowing developers to create VR content on Apple’s machines.

4) Apple announces ARKit

Apple announced its augmented reality platform, ARKit for iPhone and iPad. Because of the large installed iOS user base, Apple is touting ARKit will be the largest AR platform in the world.

AR Kit allows the phone’s camera to recognize the environment around you. In real time while looking at the screen, the AR kit allows you to add computer-generated objects into the environment in real-time.

ARKit will feature support for Unity, Unreal, and SceneKit. Apple also shared these details:

What people aren’t reporting on is the fact that this technology stems right from their Metaio acquisition, which created technology that allowed to place digital objects onto real world environments.

Let's talk about Apple(WDCC 2017)

 It's that time of the year again. With E3 around the corner (June 12th) tech news is coming in at  a dizzying speed of pace. Apple just released a plethora of new toys for all you electronic consumers and enthusiasts out there. Here are seven of the biggest announcements made gathered here for your eyes only.

1) Homepod

Apple's official jump into the smart speaker market. Available this December at $349, the Homepod is a wireless speaker toting a A8 chip. Siri is included and Apple says Homepod can sense the size of a room and adjust the music to "fit" the room.

2)Two new Ipads 

They have redesigned Retina displays with a 120Hz refresh rate. Apple pencils respond better only having a 20-milisecond latency. They're powered by a new 64-bit A10X fusion chip. They're available in two sizes: 10.5-inch starts at $649, and the other being 12.9-inches at a starting price of $799. They officially arrive next week.

3)Apple OS

Apple OS will be updated third quarter this year. For ipod, iOS 11 will have customizable dock and a new Files app to manage things. Apple claims images and text will become more streamlined with drag and drop. Apple is also diving into the AR market with ARKit. On iphones, iOS 11 will support friend payment through Apple Pay. They haven't forgotten safety either. They're adding a "Do Not Disturb While Driving" mode, activating when it thinks you're behind the wheel. Siri is getting a vocal upgrade as well. iOS 11 is planned to launch this year third quarter.

5)High Sierra

Apple didn't claim the mountains for all to see but it has instead created a new OS for desktops called High Sierra. There will be a new file system along with a redesigned Photo App. VR content creation will happen with the likes of Metal 2 for Macs. Safari and Mail will be enhanced as well. It will be released for free in the third quarter of this year with High Sierra.

6)Apple Watch

It's an apple. It's a watch. It's Apple Watch! Getting an upgrade, Watch OS4 brings a new Siri watch face along with Toy Story faces as well. The Workout and Music apps will get upgraded too. Watch OS 4 is set to launch later this year.

7) Amazon Prime 

Amazon prime video will be coming later this year to Apple TV. It means you'll be able to watch streaming shows and movies.
