You know when anime got really popular in the 10s? Yeah...
Tumblr media
This is from Uncanny X-Men (1963) #418. This whole book is like this so it's hard to just choose one.
Tumblr media
This woman has two eyes, believe it or not.
Tumblr media
That's Northstar on the left and Iceman looking constipated on the right. Neither one is recognizable.

Pretty sure Warren didn't have a date and just asked Scott out on an actual date under the guise of a "Double Date". If Scott would have accepted, they both would be dining alone, together.
In a different scenario:
Scott: sure, why not.
*At the restaurant*
Warren: *Looks nervously* umm, so our dates didn't show up (he didn't invite them). Looks like it's just you and me.
Scott: okay. Let's eat.
Warren: *sweats* sure.
.
.
Warren: so...
Scott:....
Warren: Does this count as our first date?

Oh boy oh boy, it’s time to start reading X-Men. From the very beginning!
That’s right we are (re)reading some old comics straight out of the 60s to see just how wonderfully they’ve aged. Starting with…
Tumblr media
Uncanny X-Men #1, September 1963
This issue is literally nothing of substance because it’s all about introducing out WILD and CRAZY characters! The likes of…
Tumblr media
Professor creep X and his weird brown nosing teenagers Cyclops and Angel.
Tumblr media
Jack Kirby’s foot fetish AKA The Beast.
Tumblr media
The world’s (not yet) gayest snowman, Iceman!
Tumblr media
And Jean Grey, the GIRL.
This issue consists mostly of the boys showing off in training and being gross about a girl joining the team. All except Bobby, who for SOME reason has no interest.
Tumblr media
Me too Bobby.
Tumblr media
Remember kids. Sexual harassment is ok if the girl beats you up.
Magneto then saves the day by deciding to be evil and take over a military base. You know. Magneto stuff.
Tumblr media
He has such nice handwriting.
Tumblr media
If I were Jean I’d be running for the hills by now what is wrong with Men.
Tumblr media
Anyways Warren is trans sorry if they didn’t want him to be trans shouldn’t have given him a binder.
The team gears up, blah blah blah, they fight Magneto, he gets away. Very standard fare.
Why is there a ten image limit this is bullshit.

This is not as much of a deep cut as some of the other references and cameos Orlando has snuck in, but I thought it was a fun detail. The Griever typically relies on technology to traverse realms or move through time-- here, she's using conduits built by a character called the Stranger, who is both a cosmic being and something of a mad-scientist type. His first appearance was in X-Men #11, in which he led Magneto to briefly abandon the Brotherhood. This gave Wanda and Pietro the opportunity they'd been waiting for to escape Magneto and strike out on their own, which eventually led to them joining the Avengers. This is a neat callback to a character who, however inadvertently, played a key role in the twins' origin story.
