So Xenosaga III has one of the greatest (read: gloriously unhinged) villainous plot reveals I’ve ever seen.
To set the stage: Throughout the story up to now, we’ve been aware that series heroine Shion Uzuki lost her parents and home as a child fifteen years ago. When her homeworld of Miltia was caught up in a war between the amoral corporation/fanatical religious cult obsessed with macguffins of ultimate power, and the sketchy galactic government who really wanted all those macguffins for themselves. A conflict that went from ‘bombed out cities in flames’ and ‘berserk super-soldiers slaughtering everyone’ bad to full-blown apocalyptic when the series’ resident eldritch space monsters, the Gnosis, showed up to join the party. And who then decided to stick around afterwards and be a general nuisance/existential threat to humanity across the galaxy ever since.
Now about midway through the game, it is revealed that during the battle Shion actually witnessed her parents being brutally slaughtered by the aforementioned berserk super soldiers. And that the overwhelming grief/trauma/despair she felt in that moment wound up resonating with the artifact/macguffin of ultimate power/doom stored a few floors below and summoned the Gnosis. Making Shion herself inadvertently responsible for horde of eldritch space monsters that threaten humanity. A memory of which Shion quite understandably repressed the everliving hell out of.
So now we come to where the bad guys factor into all this and things get wacky.
First we have to talk about the context for the aforementioned reveal: At this point in the story, Shion and her friends, coworkers, deadbeat brother and sexy robot girlfriend have been mysteriously sent back in time to just before the battle that destroyed Miltia. And have spent the last several days/levels tooling around doing such things as trying to figure out why they’re here, how to get back to the present and resurrecting Shion’s robo-GF after she received a brutal pounding by her sexy evil doppelganger (long story), all while displaying a truly HILARIOUS disregard for causality and potential time paradoxes.
All of which culminates in Shion being present to witness not only the true fate of her parents, but also witness her younger self unwittingly summon the Gnosis.
Which it turns out is exactly what the bad guys wanted.
For you see, for as bad as an eight-year old girl’s overwhelming grief and trauma summoning a horde of eldritch space monsters is, it turns out that this wasn’t bad ENOUGH for what the bad guys were aiming for. With a couple of the bad guys discussing earlier in the game how ‘the incident fifteen years ago happened in an incomplete state’.
So what was their solution to this?
Send present-day Shion BACK IN TIME so that she can witness not only her parents’ true fate but also her younger self summoning the Gnosis and have her OWN overwhelming traumatic breakdown.
Thus using the grief and despair of BOTH Shion’s past and present selves to provide enough combined trauma-power to facilitate the summoning of not just the horde of eldritch space monsters, but also the summoning of the ULTIMATE eldritch space monster. Which is sort of a biblically accurate angel the size of Jupiter.
Also, this was all orchestrated by Shion’s not-actually-dead and also actually-super-evil/manipulative/shitty boyfriend. But that’s a story for another time.

I remembered Namco X CAPCOM was a thing, and then something about robot monkeys crossed my mind.
What a weird coincidence that there are two of them.

AAHHHH IT'S DONE I haven't posted anything at all here after the Lora drawing but it was because I was working on this! It took me a while and I mostly had some troubles with the free trial of Clip Studio Paint I was using, but at least it's finished! I also tried using a pose as reference for this drawing, and tbh that helped me a lot

A conversation I imagine had to have happened in Xenosaga III while the gang was infiltrating/invading/depopulating Labrynthos 15 years in the past:
(for context, Margulis is Jin’s former co-pupil turned commanding officer, now arch-nemesis who shares his utter fixation on sword fighting)
MOMO: Jin, why did we find your swimsuit in Margulis’s room?
Jin: How about we stop talking for a little while?

Maybe this is common knowledge amongst the fandom but I was today years old when I learned how rare Xenosaga Episode III is.
Apparently there were only 340,000 copies made *worldwide* and approximately 120,000 of those were distributed in North America. I’ve had mine since 2006 and kept it with the rest of my Xeno collection never thinking anything of it until I saw an article today that covered some of the most rare PS2 games.
It’s selling for anywhere between $250-$300 pre-owned right now.
The game is way too sentimental for me to ever let go of, but my mind is blown.

Little corner full of little Shions.
Since I'm drawing her more often, I may as well learn this design too.
