The Shadowsinger and the Inkbird — Chapter 19 sneak peek
Azriel jolted out of bed, nails scratching along the hardwood floors until he was pressed into a dusty corner of his room, chest heaving. He tore at his hands, leaving angry, red marks.
Get it off. Get it off. Get it off.
He swiped at invisible blood stains.
He was buried beneath an ocean with a boulder strapped to his chest, pinning him to the sandy floor. He couldn’t breathe, even though he knew all he had to do was open his mouth and inhale. The pressure was too much. He could only stare forward at the shapes twisting along the wall like monsters in the night.
The strange noise woke you up. Something large moved in the darkness.
“Azriel?” You called out, groggy and disoriented. Your head pounded. Your chest felt unnaturally tight. The sheets were tangled and torn away. “Az?”
Author's note: Who's ready for a fucking NIGHTMARE SCENE??!! This one's for all the tumblr peeps who love a hefty serving of heartache.
Y'all know the drill. Chapter 19 will be out tomorrow!

it's the torture scene, i have to talk about it. especially because show-wise, it's the first time we see a glimpse of the old joel shimmer through the old, guilt-ridden joel we meet in the show. he's had so few violent interactions - even less on screen, that we had no idea, other than the stories.
i think it's not too far-fetched to say that after sarah & with the world having ended, there was a lot of rage inside joel (still is). first there was mourning, then rage. people fought over guns, supplies, houses - everything, so joel found a way to vent, let that violent streak within him roam free & do good in the process. keep his brother (later tess, too) safe, keep them fed etc.
everybody with a gun was the soldier who killed sarah, everybody else was out for his brother's head, so it became normal. and it felt good. satisfying. maybe joel has a sadistic side he didn't know of inside him, one that never would've surfaced if not for cordyceps. now it's there & the new way of the world calls to it.
after months, if not years - of doing this & dealing with grief like this, it's just something joel does. it's no a strange concept, hurting others to make himself feel better.
the torture scene.
we've seen him do this before, the map thing. but in a non-violent way. so we see he can do it a different way, if he so chooses. but it's his daughter's life on the line again & joel is no longer the old, guilt-ridden man she met, no. joel's on a mission. they took his child from him & he doesn't know if she's okay or not - knowing the world as it is, she might as well be dead - or worse.
so there is no remorse. joel will do whatever it takes to find her. he's done this before, too. maybe tommy got caught, maybe he just needed intel on ammo stashes, guns, supplies. but he's done this before, for sure.
he enjoys this. we see it. it makes him feel good in a situation in which the alternative is fear. this is revenge. he's been bed-ridden for like what? a week? he's had to rely on ellie to keep him alive, had to watch her worry. all because of them & now they dared barging in & kidnapping his kid. the pain he must've been in, the suffering & for the past days, he's been sure he would die.
but no, he has a job to do, as bill put it so beautifully.

Tatsugiri makes an excellent starter pokémon due to its predisposition to working as part of a team, but keep in mind it is still an intelligent dragon in need of enrichment.
Tatsugiri understand human speech, and can mimic it to some capacity. Whether it understands the meaning of the words it is saying or not is up for debate.
Where dondozo is primarily a freshwater pokémon, tatsugiri can tolerate a wide range of salinity. A tatsugiri in a high-salinity environment (or a low-salinity environment with no dondozo) will attempt to partner with another pokémon the way it would with a dondozo. Tatsugiri have been observed partnered with wailmer, lumineon, and basculin.
Unlike prey pokémon who are often skittish being held or hugged, tatsugiri's mutualistic relationship with dondozo leads it to feeling safe and comforted when wrapped up or placed under gentle physical pressure, and it is considered a cuddly pokémon. Please hug your tatsugiri today.
[send me a pokémon and i'll draw it semi-realistically and add my headcanons]
