"You deserve an apprentice," Blackfoot said. "You should have Badgerkit, not Flintfang."

Russetfur rolled her shoulders. "Isn't it Brokenstar's job to choose mentors?"

"And mine." Blackfoot licked his paw. "You're a good choice in anyone's eyes, Russetfur."

"Not in mine."

She watched as Badgerkit and Littlekit tumbled out of the nursery. "I won't be party to this, Blackfoot."

"You should be careful who hears you talk, Russetfur." Brokenstar's voice startled her. He watched her with a calm expression, the kink in his tail easing the harshness of his features. "Denying an apprentice could be a sign of disloyalty."

"I trained with you," Russetfur said, forcing her pelt flat. "You know I am as ShadowClan as any cat."

"You weren't born here," Brokenstar said. "Don't give me more reason to doubt you."

He walked past her, nodded to Blackfoot. "Flintfang will make a fine mentor. Stop bothering Russetfur. She can have an apprentice when she's ready."

Russetfur's legs trembled. She wasn't born in ShadowClan, but the elders had given her a name. She still remembered standing before them, hoping for their approval.

"Russetpaw," they had decided. "No cat should forget their heritage."

Birthright had never meant much to ShadowClan, but heritage was everything. She watched as Brokenstar coaxed Littlekit and Badgerkit to fight a little harder, and tried not to wince.

"Let us find atonement in our deeds," she whispered, steadying herself. "And forgiveness in our thoughts."

She stepped forward.

"Blackfoot!"

The deputy turned his head towards her.

"I don't want to mentor one of them — Badgerkit looks up to Flintfang. He'll be a better mentor. But the next litter, maybe."

Blackfoot dipped his head. "I knew you'd see sense." He purred. "I know you, Russetfur. You are a good warrior."

She dipped her head, slow and respectful. "Thank you, Blackfoot. For the good and glory?"

"For the good and glory of the stars," Blackfoot agreed, and it did not slip Russetfur's notice that he substituted ShadowClan for the stars.

occasionally, i write a short ficlet/scene from wbcd.

The kittypet stood with his claws still extended, panting as if he couldn't believe what just happened.

"He'll make a good warrior," Whitestorm murmured. Redtail nodded.

"Longtail will never forgive him for that ear, though."

Whitestorm laughed.

"StarClan has spoken its approval," Bluestar said. "This cat is free to join ThunderClan as an apprentice."

Whitestorm watched as ThunderClan faces responded, most in veiled anger. Even if none were so direct as Longtail, this was unpopular decision.

But not from everyone. Greypaw and Ravenpaw were clearly excited, and Brindleface and Frostfur seemed neutral. Rosetail was guarding her expression, but Whitestorm suspected she was happy.

"You look liked a brand of fire in the sunlight," Bluestar continued. "From this day on, your name will be Firepaw."

"Who will mentor him?" Darkstripe called. "Are we going to waste a warrior on a kittypet?"

Bluestar narrowed her eyes. "Mind your tongue, Darkstripe. He's an apprentice of ThunderClan." She cast her gaze over the warriors. "Rosetail, you are an experienced warrior, and you will make an excellent guide to teaching Firepaw the ways of a warrior."

Rosetail stepped forward. "I am honoured."

Firepaw looked between Rosetail and Bluestar.

"You touch noses now," Greypaw whispered, loud enough the Clan could hear.

Rosetail purred softly. "Welcome to ThunderClan, Firepaw."

riverclan — year one — newleaf

the first newleaf for every clan is something of allegiances. i go through all of the allegiances for the prophecies begin and identify every cat, then cross-reference their other apperances to identify their age.

i generally assume cats are dead if they don't appear in tpb, but as we shall see, i am willing to make assumptions. this process isn't perfect, especially for riverclan and shadowclan (windclan has a full list of cats in fire and ice, allowing me to make some reasonable assumptions moving forward), so there may be minor tweaks in future seasons. that said, i feel reasonably confident in this list.

leadership

leader: crookedstar (25 seasons, 9 lives). i don't have any information on his lives, so i'm assuming he has all of them.

deputy: oakheart (25 seasons). remember, this is before the events of into the wild.

seer: mudfur (29 seasons). he's a warrior at the beginning of crookedstar's promise, and given how high he's listed, i find it likely he's closer to 40 seasons. however, i always err on the side of maximizing longevity, which means keeping him as young as possible.

warriors

greypool (22 seasons). i have no reason for her to be an elder. she's younger than oakheart. since we don't have confirmation of her as an elder in into the wild, i'm taking liberties.

loudbelly (19 seasons).

leopardfur (19 seasons).

frogleap (18 seasons). he doesn't appear in the prophecies begin, but he's the father of mosspelt's kits, implying he's alive.

blackclaw (18 seasons).

mistyfoot (13 seasons).

stonefur (13 seasons). (apprentice: shadepaw.)

whiteclaw (11 seasons). i had no information to go on for his age, so i decided to interpret the fact that he was both leopardfur's apprentice and a viable mate for leopardfur as him being exactly two years younger than her. i try to only give apprentices to warriors eight seasons and older, and this keeps their ages as close as possible.

silverstream (6 seasons).

mosspelt (5 seasons). i have no information about her age, but she doesn't appear in crookedstar's promise, so i've made her the youngest she can be while that is still true. she's now greenflower's sister, because i say so.

apprentices

shadepaw (2 seasons). (mentor: stonefur.) stays behind, as an elder, in dawn, so i've pushed her to be as old as possible. since she appears as an apprentice in fire and ice, and into the wild covers two seasons, she has to be a first season apprentice in it.

queens and kits

greenflower (5 seasons). everything about mosspelt applies. her litter is heavykit and silverkit, newborns. making heavystep and silverpaw siblings does not impact the family tree, nor does making greenflower their mother change anything.

heavykit and silverkit's ages were chosen as heavystep becomes a warrior in a dangerous path, implying he's around a year old.
