The Outsider (2018)
“In life, sometimes we fight the current, other times we go with the flow of the river.”
In 1954, nine years after the Pacific War, former US Marine Captain, Nick Lowell (Jared Leto) was arrested for petty crime and ends up in the same prison in Osaka filled with yakuza criminals. His life changed when he saved Kiyoshi (Tadanobu Asano) from certain death.
Indebted to him, Kiyoshi, took him into his Yakuza family, serving the Shiromatsu (Min Tanaka), a once formidable clan which is growing weak due to the rising clan in Kobe that is vying for power in Osaka. Nick works hard to prove his worth and loyalty to the clan.
Although, he eventually earned the respect and trust of Shiromatsu, another member, Orochi (Kippei Shiina) grew jealous of Nick and most especially after learning that his former lover, Miyu (Shioli Kutsuna) is now interested in Nick. Things start to get dicey from here on.
A story of loyalty and betrayal, as various factions within and beyond the Yakuza family clan wants control of the Shiromatsu and it’s territory of Osaka. A story of power struggle against the backdrop of a country rebuilding itself from the war and destruction of World War II.
If you love Yakuza genre films like Tokyo Vice, Black Rain and Yakuza and the Family, this one is for you. It is surprisingly good but I only manage to watch it now in 2023. The one thing I feel is that it would be better if they made it into a longer series like Tokyo Vice instead of a one off movie.

Yakuza and The Family
[ Japanese Movie / Action Drama ]
Where to watch: Netflix
Rating: 7/10
Sorry, I’ve been gone for a while. I've been reading a lot of Webtoon and Manga lately, instead of anime. Most of it isn’t worth a review, since I review my top favorite Webtoons/Manga at the moment. Maybe I could start a rating system for those too? Just a thought~ Anyways, <Yakuza and The Family> (also known as <The Family> or <A Family>) was a completely spontaneous and great watch. It’s a live-action movie about the fall of the yakuza. A young man joins the yakuza family then eventually sees the yakuza fall from their throne. It’s an interesting story!
Warning: Sexual acts, Blood, Violence
Great cinematography. This is definitely a very heavily dramatic movie, and the visuals match with that well. Some scenes were really well shot. I liked that a lot.
Interesting story. It takes a while, but the story was actually a lot more fun and intriguing than I thought it would be. I had no idea what the movie was about, so I thought maybe it would be one of those repeated revenge stories, maybe a gang 1 vs. gang 2. But wow! It took a whole different path, and I really liked the second half of the movie.
Great acting. The main actor was really good. The yakuza boss actor was really good too. Maybe I’m too used to bad anime live-actions, but I’m really impressed by the acting quality in this movie.
As for the cons,
The first half wasn’t it. The first half was kind of slow and confusing. The second half was way better, so the movie saved itself from low ratings. But I think if the first half storyline was a little shorter or there was a little bit more world building or character building happening, I might’ve enjoyed it better.
Confusing. Like I said in the point above, some of the plot is just plain confusing. I think the small time jumps just skipped too much time where things could’ve been fleshed through more.
Overall,
<Yakuza and The Family> was a pleasant surprise! As I said, I knew nothing about this movie before watching it, and it was a great surprise. Even with its flaws, I enjoyed it a lot, especially because I haven’t seen that many movies about the fall of the yakuza. It was really interesting to see portrayed through a movie. I sadly can’t explain more without spoiling the movie (μ_μ) If you like a slow burn, drama movie that isn’t too action heavy with still has a decent amount of action if that makes sense, you’ll definitely like this movie. I think it’s a great watch for when you’re bored. Worth it, even if I did rate it a 7.
