once again begging mlb to add a position for hype guy who doesn’t play. i want siri to stay with the rays, mess around in the dugout, hug guys who hit homers, and maybe act as stylist for some of the players lacking in rizz, but i do not really want him on the field.

Twins Hang On To Split With Rays!
Twins 4 Rays 3 W-Lopez (14-8) L-Bradley (6-10) SV-Duran (22)
The Tampa Bay Rays have given the Twins some problems with two straight wins. The Twins looked to split the four-game set this afternoon at Tropicana Field. The Twins were ready early as Jose Miranda and Carlos Santana started the second with singles. Eddie Julien then smacked a Taj Bradley fastball out to right for a three-run homer. This put the Twins up by three after two frames. Minnesota kept adding on in the third as Matt Wallner belted a Taj Bradley fastball out to right for a solo homer. The Rays answered in the bottom of the third as they slowly loaded the bases. Junior Caminero knocked in a pair with a base hit to cut the Twins lead to two after three innings of play. The Rays continued to inch closer in the seventh when Jonny DeLuca led-off with a double and Yandy Diaz delivered a two-out double to right. Griffin Jax got out of the jam in the seventh and got in and out of trouble in the eighth. Jhoan Duran had a 1-2-3 ninth and the Twins split with the Rays this week.
-Final Thoughts- Pablo Lopez had another strong start. He went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. Griffin Jax got four big outs and struck out a pair. Jhoan Duran had a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts. Ryan Jeffers led the way with two hits on the day. The Twins hit 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. The team called up DaShawn Keirsey Jr. from St. Paul and put Max Kepler on the injured list with left patellar tendinitis. The Twins will head to Kansas City for a huge three-game series with the Royals. Zebby Matthews faces Cole Ragans in Game 1.

Rays' Yandy Diaz Placed on Restricted List for Personal Matter
Tumblr media
Manager Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays announced that first baseman Yandy Diaz has been placed on the restricted list because of a personal situation. Leading the team in hits with 104 and ranking second on the team with a.273 average, Diaz was not in the team when they traveled to New York for their most recent game against the Yankees. Cash claimed that the personal situation was not a disciplinary matter, although he did not elaborate on its nature. Curtis Mead, an infielder, was called up by the Rays from Triple-A Durham to fill Diaz's roster spot. The Rays have found great success with Diaz, who will turn 33 next month, after he set a club record last season by hitting.330 to win the American League batting title. The Rays believe he'll be back with the team shortly, but his absence will be felt. Without having to put them on the injured list or designate them for assignment, a player can be taken off the active roster by placing them on the restricted list. The team is not compelled to reveal the precise cause for the player's absence, and it is frequently utilized for family or personal reasons. Read the full article

went to the rays-guardians game last night and had the time of my Life. i’ve been a lifelong rays fan and i’ve never seen the trop that packed (sell-out!). i really thought they were gonna lose, since the bullpen was not really killing it and the offense wasn’t materializing as much as they sometimes do, and people started leaving (as usual) before the 9th to beat traffic, but that last inning was electric. down 5-3, no outs, josh lowe starts a rally with a single and is sent home by yandy diaz doubling (almost a homer). 5-4, one out (bethancourt grounded out), with the tying run on second, wander franco comes up to bat. through the whole game, clips of his walk-off homer from the night before have been playing, and people start standing, anticipating a similar result. heartbreak; he strikes out. 5-4, two outs, and brandon lowe is up (annoyingly, to cheers of “let’s go brandon”). a wild pitch lets yandy take third, and b lowe singles, sending him home. 5-5, two outs, winning run is on first, and randy arozarena, the beloved of rays fans and team mexico fans alike (not mutually exclusive), is up to bat. my hopes are high, my expectations are low. he hasn’t been the same since the home run derby/asg. everyone is standing now, and chants of “RAN-DY! RAN-DY! RAN-DY!” are filling the stadium. someone next to me comments “no pressure, right?”, and i gleefully inform her that randy is best under pressure; if the rays could somehow manage to convince him that every game was the most important of his career, we’d go 162-0. brandon lowe steals second. the count is rising. everyone is yelling. then, boom; randy hits it into center field. the screaming gets significantly louder; it looks like it’ll be caught. but it isn’t!! the outfielder drops it, and brandon lowe scores. rays win, 5-6, the BWAHHHHHH goes off, and randy is mobbed at first. incredible ending. i’m going to be riding that high for Days.

Hugh's Bats as of 4/23/2024
A few changes.
One Micheal Conforto is gone. He was hitting too many ground balls. He knew it too I think because yesterday (after I dropped him) he got so mad after hitting into an out he threw his bat in frustration. In his place is Starling Marte who Is made of glass and will probably disappoint me at some point but right now I'm hoping he can be a source of home runs AND steals.
Secondly, my beloved Yandy Diaz is gone. He wasn't going too be much help in any category other than OBP and I was in desperate need of saves so I picked up Kirby Yates. Yates rewarded my faith in him with three save this last week alone! Finally a fantasy move that is paying off.
As of today I am tied for last place in the home run category. I'm really hoping that changes soon. Over all ...as of today...Hugh's Bats is in THIRD PLACE (out of ten). So if I could just rack up some home runs I could be in a much better position to win.

Seattle Mariners 2024 Season - Post 1 - Midseason Form
Tumblr media
(Apologies for skipping these recaps last season.  And approximately half of this season.  As any writer or baseball fan or otherwise person knows, ruts are hard to dig yourself out of.  Which perfectly segues to….)
This morning, there was an extra anxiousness rattling in my brain, bumping up against all the usual anxiousness.
I walked the blocks from the bus stop to work, anticipating the serving of breakfast baseball that would be served in 2 hours and the resulting upset stomach that there is no remedy for.
The Mariners would lose and their season would be over.
It’s not yet July and the Mariners are in first place in the AL West, thanks to slow starts by the Astros and Rangers.  On top of that, the Mariners are 45-37, for a .549 winning percentage, a whole .009 above 54%.  So why the doom and gloom?
Well, for one, the Mariners.
For two, recency bias.  This morning’s game is the last game of a 9 game road trip, one through which the M’s have gone 2-6.  At the same time, the Astros have gone 6-1.  Before that stretch of 8 games for the M’s they held a 9 game lead over the Astros.  This morning, that lead is 4.5.  Possibly 3.5 by lunchtime.  Most assuredly 3.5.  I’m sick already.
This morning’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays starts off with 2 innings of scoreless baseball.
That is broken in the 3rd when Jose Caballero scores from 2nd on an infield single to the pitcher.
Unfortunately, Cabby is no longer on the Mariners.  Traded to the Rays last offseason.
Rays up 1-0 when Cabby takes advantage of some bad Mariners luck.  George Kirby fields the grounder from Yandy Diaz, but Kirby has to try to beat Diaz to first base as first baseman Ty France is positioned towards second base and not covering the bag.  Diaz beats Kirby to first and Cabby takes advantage of the confusion and sprints home.
I don’t like being on the other side of Jose Caballero’s peskiness and speed.  I don’t like it at all. To quote George Kirby, “Screw Cabby for going home on that play.”
At this point, the Mariners have had two baserunners.  Cal Raleigh walked in the 2nd inning and J.P. Crawford doubled in the 3rd inning.  The M’s take no advantage of either opportunity.
The M’s let the 4th and 5th inning go by, not by squandering baserunners, but by not having any.
There is a little solace in the bottom of the 5th when Jose Caballero is thrown out trying to steal 2nd base.
With 1 out in the Mariners half of the 6th inning, J.P. Crawford walks.
The Rays go to their bullpen, bringing Shawn Armstrong in to relieve Ryan Peppiot.
Josh Rojas grounds to second and the Rays get the force out of J.P. at second but the inning is still alive and Rojas is the tying run at first.
Julio Rodriguez keeps the inning alive with a walk.
Cal Raleigh keeps the M’s season alive with a monster home run to right field, putting the Mariners up 3-1.
George Kirby pitches a 1-2-3 inning to end the 6th.
In the 7th inning with 2 outs J.P. Crawford hits a fly ball single just out of reach of Jose Caballero that scores Mitch Garver and Dominic Canzone, adding 2 insurance runs for a 5-1 Mariners lead.
In the bottom of the 9th, Andres Munoz comes in to secure the win for the M’s.  In the grand scheme of things, salvaging a road trip and not allowing the Astros the opportunity to close the gap in the standings definitely counts as high leverage.  I get it.  Andrez Munoz, likely still having lingering pain from a lower back strain stint on the IL earlier this month, didn’t have it.
He loads the bases with two walks a hit batter.  I can already see the Rays walk off celebration and the Trop going crazy.
Trent Thonton comes in to relieve Munoz, salvage the win and the Mariners season.
Thornton gets Richie Palacios to hit a grounder to 2B Ryan Bliss, Bliss flips the ball to J.P. Crawford to get the force out at second base.  Palacios reaches base safely and the Rays add a run, but now a double play would end the game with a win for the M’s.
The next batter, Ahmed Rosario, the hypothetical tying run, gives the Mariners just what they need.
J.P. Crawford fields the ground ball, throws to second base for one, on to first for the double play.
A much needed win!
Keeps my doom and gloom away for a least 2 days, with tomorrow being a travel day for the Mariners.
Friday has them begin a homestand with 3 against the Minnesota Twins, who last month were poor hosts and took 3 out of 4 against the Mariners.
Let’s hope the M’s can return the favor.
