okay ffiv has obvious themes like brotherhood and forgiveness but so so so many separate parts of ffiv suddenly snap together beautifully if you take the theme of parents and in loco parentis: adoption, guardianship, teachers. people taking responsibility for those younger or weaker. not fully as parents necessarily but what they need in that moment. and how they and the protectee address it when they fail at that duty.

the king, cecil, and kain. cecil remembering the bodies of pacifist mysidians and realizing that's not why he became a dark knight. cid has his own daughter but finds time to check in on cecil, unmoored from his royal foster dad. kain wanting to feel closer to his birth father. rydia's existence. tellah and anna. cecil and rydia, who have lost everything they can protect except rosa, not knowing how to help edward make this realization in his own grief, only how to hurt or belittle him. rosa mentoring rydia to learn fire is honestly rosa's strongest characterization moment outside of kain and cecil drama hours. yang looking over the bodies of the junior monks he was teaching. yang jumping in after rydia without hesitating. leviathan we learn later taking in rydia. cecil returning to mysidia. cecil looking down at palom and porom saying i'm sorry you want literal children to climb the holycursed zombie mountain?

i kinda like to think that was the first test and cecil didn't even realize. if he hadn't spoken up about how weird it seems sending kids well maybe he's just faking being contrite and following his own moral compass now because if you don't know palom and porom can nuke half the mountain on their own that would be extremely weird. ah yes, the elder says, moving his hand under the desk from the 'eject' button. don't worry about these two they'll be fine. :) cecil quickly realizing the two brats are all but carrying him up the mountain he thought he needed to protect them from.

except for kain's whole thing boiling over under the "brotherhood/jealousy" theme, moments that fall outside "guardianship" are i think generally less memorable, or if not set up well feel forced to me, like plain readings of the love triangle, yang and cid's sacrifices (versus palom and porom's, ouch), cecil not explaining adequately why rosa and rydia need to stay behind aside from not wanting the girlies on his implied suicide run. i'm sure i'm also forcing this interpretation a bit

About mind control in ff4

I am currently hearing Bram Stocker's Dracula in audiobook form, and I am trying to draw some parallels with FF4. I think people already know that there are little touches of inspiration in the game, and there are quite some nods to gothic/horror movies like Frankenstein, zombie movies, Family Adams (with the thing, the living cut hand, like Golbez' glove who takes the dwarve's cristal), etc ... The parallel was drawn between Golbez and Darth Vador, so Zemus could be a reference to the Emperor. But he could also be a reference to Nosferatu, as he has similar powers, like the one to survive death, to control monsters, to hypnotize, to corrupt other people to turn them like himself ... And he's just as ugly as Murnau's vampire. I think I saw a fanfic with a vampire AU. I'm not ready to read it yet, but I see where it comes from now. But there's something : characters blame Kain and Yang to be weak to Golbez' influence because they are easy to corrupt. Actually, in Dracula story, the vampire's victims are not bad persons. There are two ways to manipulate people for a vampire : blood (for Zemus it's lunarian blood), and hallucinations. I wonder if the characters just misunderstand what happened to Kain and Yang. I see two common things about them : they don't use magic and they certainly were found in a very bad shape after natural disasters : a earthquake and a tempest which caused a shipwreck. So, as far as I'm concerned, I think it's really bad luck for Yang and Kain, but they were just easy preys for Golbez who needed to reach Cecil indirectly because he was unable to get rid of his brother by himslef, he just used his comrades.

Thoughts about Beatrix from Final Fantasy IX

I like Beatrix from Final Fantasy IX (#ad) well enough, but wouldn’t call her a fave or anything.

Right now, I have her 15cp, 35cp, Ex, and LD fully MLB. Her Ex has been Purpled or upgraded to Ex+ 3/3.

She has her High Armor and it’s been Realized to 0/3. She has her Bloom Stone. She has triple perfect Artifacts and 3 RF Spheres.

All of Beatrix’s Summon Boards have been completed. Unlocked parts of her Character Enhancement Boards, particularly the tiles that would give me her LD Call and LD extension passive.

Beatrix is a support who can deal pretty good damage. She provides decent enough party-wide buffs and auras. She can heal. She can dispel the buffs of enemies. She can also provide some protection against the attacks of enemies.

Beatrix isn’t really meta though. Don’t really need her. Nevertheless, I felt like tossing some tickets on her banner anyway.

This was a really bad idea though considering her FR is the only weapon I’m missing on both of the aforementioned banners. And like I said, don’t really need it.

Heck, I’m 99.99% sure that I’m not gonna bother to MLB Beatrix’s FR even if I manage to get it. At the moment, I have lots of Force weapons that I ended up pulling but never bothered to MLB so they’re all just clogging up my inventory.

I’m better off saving my tickets for future and upcoming banners but I was like, I could use more dupes of Yang’s LD for limit breaking purposes. Yang’s Ex and Lightning’s Ex give pretty good Spheres (both give Spheres that increase the ATK stat by 10%). I could totally use more copies.

These are all nothing but excuses though. I mean, yeah, my Yang LD hasn’t been fully limit broken yet but it’s not like I even have any plans of using it right now. And even if I did want to use it, I can just MLB it via Power Stones.

Yang’s Ex and Lightning’s Ex weapons may give good Spheres but I actually already have a few dupes of these lying around in my inventory. So far, haven’t had any more chars who wants these Spheres and who I actually want to give Spheres to.

In short, I really should just leave the Beatrix Intersecting Wills banners alone but couldn’t seem to help myself.

Oath Within my Вrеаst (Intersecting Wills) Banner 1 Free First Multi-Draw Results

As part of the New Year campaign, we get a free multi-draw on both of the Oath Within my Вrеаst (Intersecting Wills) banners.

Banner 1′s free pull gave me a gold orb which turned into dupes of Yang’s LD and either Beatrix’s 15cp or Lightning’s 15cp. Yay for that Yang LD dupe although I do wish I’d gotten Beatrix’s FR instead.

My free multi-draw on the Oath Within my Вrеаst (Intersecting Wills) banner 2 gave me nothing more than a dupe of Beatrix’s 35cp. Meh. Bad pull is bad.

Oath Within my Вrеаst (Intersecting Wills) Banner 1 Tickets Pulls Results

As aforementioned, I really shouldn’t pull on either of these Intersecting Wills banners, but couldn’t seem to help it. Really felt like pulling so decided to toss some tickets here. Currently have 506 tickets on hand.

My first 10-draw gave me a gold orb which turned into a dupe of Beatrix’s Ex. Meh.

If I was gonna get a dupe Ex, wish I could have gotten either Yang’s or Lightning’s instead. Beatrix’s Ex gives a Sphere that raises the party’s MAX BRV. Still have my first copy of this just rotting in my inventory since, so far, have yet to encounter a char who wants this and who I want to give Spheres to.

My next few 10-draws gave me nothing but regular blue orbs and these all turned into dupe 15cps and 35cps so I didn’t even bother letting the animations play out.

The moment I see a regular blue orb, I just tap the screen so I can get to the draw results screen right away.

Didn’t see a point in waiting for the items I got to reveal themselves one-by-one when they all turned out to be bronze and silver trash and 15cp and 35cp gold dupes anyway. This is why I didn’t bother taking screenshots either.

So I was really surprised when I got to the draw results screen of yet another 10-draw that gave me a regular blue orb, and I noticed a weapon with a purple background.

I was like wait, isn’t that a Force weapon? Isn’t that Beatrix’s Force weapon? Sure enough, it was indeed Beatrix’s FR.

Welp, totally wasn’t expecting to see this yet or even at all, especially since I’d only done a few 10-draws so far and I kept on getting regular blue orbs.

Really pleased to see this though. So glad that I was able to get Beatrix’s FR without having to use hundreds of tickets. Still have 466 tickets left when Bea’s Force weapon came home.

This 10-draw also gave me 2 dupes of either Lightning’s 15cp or Beatrix’s 15cp.

Too bad I didn’t get any more dupes of Yang’s LD, Lightning’s Ex, and/or Yang’s Ex but it’s fine. At least I was able to get Beatrix’s FR. Done with this banner now.

Beatrix from Final Fantasy IX

Just as I feared, didn’t bother to spend the resources needed to fully MLB Beatrix’s FR. Couldn’t bring myself to do so since it seemed like such a waste when I don’t even think that I’ll be using it.

Also couldn’t bring myself to fully max out Beatrix such as by completing the rest of her Boards.

So for now, I just equipped her with her Force weapon. And that’s it. LOL. Yeah, yeah, maybe I really shouldn’t have bothered to pull for Beatrix’s FR. But hey, at least I have it in case I need it, right? LOL.

In the first two entries, I listed all the Burst Themes that had been released by the time the game's End of Service had been announced, and unfortunately that means that a good deal of characters will go on without ever having gotten a Burst Weapon.

Thoughts about Rem Tokimiya From Final Fantasy Type-0

Been hearing lots of good things about Rem Tokimiya from Final Fantasy Type-0. She’s a support slash healer slash buffer. She can swap her turns with another char in the party. She deals pretty good damage.

I also like Rem’s Burst animation since Machina Kunagiri from Final Fantasy Type-0 shows up in it. And I could always use more supports and healers, especially someone who also has their Force and Burst weapons and who has access to their Force Boards and Force Echoes.

Plus, I do like Rem well enough, and I’ve also been thinking of bringing her to 2 of the quests in Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 15.

In short, my plan was to pull for her with gems since I’d really like to have both her Burst and Force weapons.

Currently, my Rem has her 15cp, 35cp, Ex, and LD fully MLB. Her Ex weapon has been Purpled. Her High Armor has been Blued. She has up to level 15 of her Force Enhancements.

Rem has her Bloom Stone. She has triple perfect Artifacts and triple RF Spheres. All of her Summon Boards and her LD Boards have been completed.

Thoughts about Vaan from Final Fantasy XII

Vaan’s BT and FR aren’t new. These weapons have already shown up before. However, Vaan did get a rework and update with the arrival of the Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 15 banners. He also got access to his Force Boards and Force Echoes.

Before, I’d been thinking of building Vaan since I do like him well enough and since I already have all of his weapons, but ended up not doing so since it didn’t seem like I really needed him for anything and I was trying to save resources.

Now, I think I’ll have to pass on Vaan again. He is a good magical DPS but it feels like it’d be better to just wait for another DPS instead. Plus, I already have him locked on to an earlier Dimensions’ End tier so he won’t be able to help me clear Tier 15.

Have 3 multi-draw tickets which can be used on either of the Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 15 banners. Decided to use all 3 of these tickets on banner 1.

The first ticket gave me a gold orb which turned into a dupe of Rem’s LD.

The second ticket also gave me a gold orb. This one turned into dupes of Rem’s LD, Palom’s Ex, Rem’s Ex, Palom’s Ex, and Yang’s 15cp. It was nice to see so many golds in one draw but it’s just too bad that these were all dupes.

The third ticket actually gave me a force orb.

Hell, yes! Was so pleased to see this until I remembered that there are 2 Force weapons on this banner. Now I could only hope that I was about to get Rem’s FR.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. Ended up with a dupe of Vaan’s FR as well as a dupe of Palom’s LD. Sigh.

Well, at least I haven’t fully max limit broken these 2 weapons yet but still. Wish that Vaan FR dupe had been my first copy of Rem’s FR instead.

Anyway, my next multi-draw actually gave me a force orb. Sadly, ended up with a dupe of Vaan’s FR again as well as dupes of Rem’s Ex and Yang’s LD. Argh! Why’d this have to happen? Rem FR and BT, please come home already.

Ugh. These pulls are all so bad. Getting really pissed with this banner, so much so that I forgot to screenshot the last multi-draw.

Argh! Eff this banner. Down to 1248220 gems, and I now have 400 G Tokens here, the exact amount I need to exchange for Rem’s Burst weapon. But I still don’t have her FR either. Damn it. So freaking frustrating. Now I have to try my luck with tickets.

I’m especially annoyed because this exact same scenario happened just recently on the banner featuring Cor Leonis’s (from Final Fantasy XV) BT and FR and Noctis Lucis Caelum’s (from Final Fantasy XV) FR.

I wanted Cor’s BT and Noctis’s FR so I spent gems on said banner. Got up to 400 G Tokens but had yet to see either Cor’s BT or Noctis’s FR so had no choice but to try and ticket Noctis’s FR so I can use the 400 G Tokens to exchange for Cor’s BT.

Thankfully, I was able to get both weapons in the end, but the experience was still really frustrating. I talk more about that in this post.

Anyway, now I need to try and get Rem’s FR via tickets so I can freely exchange the 400 G Tokens I just got for her BT. The problem is that I only have 87 tickets on hand.

I can get more from the Divine Boards and such but - argh! This wasn’t the plan at all. I don’t mind having to pity Rem’s BT. I just wish her FR had dropped before that happened. Because I don’t want to have to pity 2 weapons at once and on the same banner at that. Sigh. Eff this banner and this game.

Anyway, got the usual bronze and silver trash and gold dupes. Didn’t bother taking a lot of screenshots since all my pulls just seem so bad. This banner is really pissing me off.

At one point, got a 10-draw with 5 golds. Too bad these were all dupes of Rem’s LD, Palom’s LD, Yang’s 35cp, Palom’s LD, and Yang’s Ex.

Then, a bit later on, actually got a force orb. Was really, really hoping that I can finally get Rem’s FR but once again, Vaan trolls me with a dupe of his FR. Argh! Damn it.

Every time I run out of tickets, I go and get more from the Divine Boards. Just kept on getting trash and more trash though so it feels like I’m just wasting all my tickets for nothing.

Then I got yet another regular blue orb. Was expecting to get the usual trash, and that actually seemed to be the case since not even a gold dupe had shown up so far. But then, to my complete and utter surprise, the last item suddenly had a different animation and then this showed up -

My very first copy of Rem’s FR! Hell, yes! And freaking finally! Super pleased to see this.

At least she didn’t take all of my tickets but it still feels like I spent way too many tickets anyway.

I still wish Rem’s FR had shown up in one of my gem pulls on the way to pitying her BT. Heck, I wish I didn’t have to pity her BT.

Well, at least I can finally be done with this banner. I really hope I won’t end up having to pity the next Burst weapon that I want and then having to ticket the FR as well since it didn’t show up during my gem pulls.

Although I still have lots of gems and tickets, it’s still frustrating and annoying to have to spend so much multiple times in a row. If something like that ends up happening often enough or even all the time, then I’m gonna quickly run out of resources.

Vaan from Final Fantasy XII

Anyway, fused all the Vaan FR dupes that trolled me to my first copy. Was able to fully MLB Vaan’s FR without having to use a single High Power Stone.

After that, just left Vaan as-is for now. Still don’t have any plans of further building him like Greening his Burst weapon.

Rem Tokimiya from Final Fantasy Type-0

Spent the 12 High Power Stones needed to fully MLB Rem’s FR.

Then I went to the Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 15 banner 1 G Token Exchange Shop.

Exchanged 400 of my G Tokens for 1 copy of Rem’s Burst weapon.

Now I finally have my first copy of Rem’s Burst.

Spent the Book and 3 Ingots needed to Green Rem’s BT.

Completed the rest of Rem’s Force Enhancements and Character Enhancement Boards. Also replaced her RF Spheres with triple real ones.

Now my Rem is fully built and complete. Can’t wait to try her out in some endgame content, including Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 15.
