I’m back again with some ranting/thoughts about Fuuta, his character, and current mental state based on the T3 teaser because I could write essays upon essays analyzing this guy and I’m also tired of some of the takes I’ve been seeing about him on the bird app that solely blame Amane for his current state. (TW for brief sui. mention, talks of mental illness/delusions)
Tumblr media
Starting off strong and controversial maybe but I can’t state enough how much I hate the ā€œFuuta killed Shidouā€ theory because it would be a complete assassination of Fuuta’s character. The entire point of his murder was that it was indirect and he has stated multiple times that he can’t stand physical violence. It makes no sense that he would up and kill someone now, even with how departed from reality he’s become. Now, him indirectly helping cause Shidou’s death is a gray area. I genuinely don’t think Fuuta would consciously assist with this, but he’s so far gone at this point I can’t say there’s zero chance he would. But as far as Fuuta carrying out the act, absolutely not.
Now the biggest point I want to make and talk about, is that Fuuta has been exhibiting signs of psychosis since his T2 interrogation. It’s already clear from the T3 teaser that it’s gotten progressively worse and he’s now completely dependent on and enthralled to religious delusion, which is a common symptom of psychosis. None of this was Amane’s fault, mind you. She’s always been very open about her faith and Fuuta developed this religion-based delusion all on his own, he was already at his breaking point so it’s not really a surprise that he’s reached this point. It’s driving me insane that anyone is blaming Amane for these changes in Fuuta’s personality, and not understanding how severe an effect Milgram itself has had on Fuuta who was already not a very mentally strong individual.
And even then on top of his poor mental state, the huge amounts of physical pain he’s likely still been dealing with are probably not doing him any favors. You do not have consistently coherent thoughts with that much chronic pain and no relief for it.
Now the presence of hundreds of eyes in Backdraft, Fuuta stating in his T2 interrogation that he can’t sleep (sleep deprivation being another cause of psychosis) because he feels like he’s being watched (perhaps causing hyper-vigilance) and hearing voices (which seems to affect him more strongly than any other character who’s mentioned the voices), the physical trauma he endured, the mention of ā€œsuccumbingā€ (aka killing himself) in Backdraft, his sudden mood swings/random aggression and disordered speech in his T2 interrogation, like it’s. All telltale signs of psychosis and religious delusion was almost always going to be the next step unless he succumbed to despair and died. Again, at no fault of Amane’s. Fuuta needed something to cling to, and he found it.
T3 Fuuta is going to be extremely detached from reality and is likely going to have delusions of grandeur or a superiority complex as well, since those commonly come along with religious delusion. I’m almost resigning myself for him get a Guilty verdict for T3 because it’s going to be a massive shift from the character we know and Es is probably going to have an extremely difficult time trying to communicate with and understand him as he is, which might be frustrating to people. All of this combined with his strong sense of justice is…. likely going to go badly for him in terms of winning us over to vote him Innocent. I’m expecting a similar reaction as T1 Muu to T2 Muu honestly, I feel like it’s going to be a similar kind of shift in character.
Not to mention. How do we think he’s going to react to Mahiru’s death by the way. Not great I’m sure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways. At the end of the day I’ve loved breaking down Fuuta’s character since T1, he is so much fun to dissect and he has consistently seemed to be the character most heavily and negatively affected by Milgram’s environment which is so fascinating to me. I’m really excited to see where they go from here with him.
I do also adore the 0308 sibling dynamic even though I desperately wish Amane had a mentally competent adult in her environment that she trusts because she desperately needs one. The toxic codependency they’ve probably formed is going to be hard to watch as well.

Let me get this off my chest
My hottest(?) take in the MILGRAM fandom (specifically the Haruka Sakurai subsection, cause ofc it is) is that Haruka genuinely suffered through severe neglected + abuse and never received treatment for his disability. Which means, yes, he will need some help navigating through things in daily life and having someone that will teach him these things will be like the mother he never had (Muu). But it also constantly irks me when people infantilize Haruka in either extreme direction (he's an evil sociopath or he's an uwu soft wittle baby) cause not only are both extremes are insanely wrong, but also just incredibly ableistic. Like....imagine being so traumatized you aren't even sure of your own age! Yes, he needs help, but he also stated that his greatest wish is to live normally and be a smart, strong, and interesting person. He literally just *wants* to be normal. Yes, he wants attention, but he doesn't want to be babied or woobified. He wants to be treated normally, which was happening in the prison. He's on good terms with everyone (or was when T1 was back to happier times :,D), learned communication skills not just from Muu, but from other others as well, and had someone that showed him accommodation and kindness for the first time. No wonder he sees Muu as a maternal figure, the MILGRAM prisoners genuinely feel more like a family to him than his real family is. But it also goes to show that he wants to be relied on as much as he wants people to rely on. His threat to khs in his second VD? No, he wasn't a 'platonic yandere' for Muu or a psycho. He wanted to be useful to the very end. He wanted to show his 'new mom' "Hey, you said you were scared of the prison! Your good boy will make sure that you're safe no matter what!". He wanted to show off the 'skills' to his 'new mom' that he didn't have before, which made him a 'failure'. Haruka may not think he's very smart, but he is aware that he is strong (Hello??? "I can kill anything smaller than me!"). So what is his way of showing his use? Protecting his loved one. While he does rely on people, he also wants someone to rely on him. Even if it's to the point of using him, which he canonically doesn't care about! ("So what if she's using me? Isn't it a good thing, to be used?"). All so he can feel like he was worth in someone's life. It's not a matter of him wanting to be treated like a child forever. He genuinely wants to find value and worth in life, but bc of the highly stressful environment + the toxic relationship he has with "new mom", he tries to find it in the worst way possible
TDLR: Haruka, yes, wants kindness and support. It's natural to cling onto the first person to show you that in your life. But he also *wants* to be useful to his loved one. He doesn't want to be babied, he *wants* to be relied on. He wants to be this 'smart and strong person' his loved one can fall back on and count on for certain things

I'm not a big fan of the interpretation that hinako had no idea about what was going on behind the scenes of kazui's stage, or atleast the feeling I get from how some people talk about her like she was completely naive or in the dark
I mean, half shows their relationship straining quite clearly. they're shown on opposite sides of the room, not even facing each other. I feel like any partner would start to wonder and have doubts about why things aren't the same as they used to be, why their love isn't spending as much time with them anymore and starting to pick up habits associated with Drowning One's Sorrows in (drinking and smoking)
No, I think she most definitely had her doubts. I think she brushed these aside, justifying them with the whole "he would never" shebang, I mean kazui was the one who asked her out in the first place so surely not? Right?
I think it makes her reaction contextualised a lot more, and it makes more sense to me.
Tumblr media
This isn't the face of just someone realising their partner has never romantically loved them, it's also the face of someone whose deepest worries, that they brushed away because they trusted their partner, being proven right.

I think something i don't often see in discussions about Futa's character is how, if you really take a second, he's kind of a people pleaser
He isn't so in a way like what Mikoto got going on, he does want to be around people of the same interests as him, and you wouldn't think he'd care about anything but authenticity if you stayed with the way he behaves on milgram. It is only when you think about him -in- those social circles he manages to get into that you can see him tweaking lol
I think the closest to see this that we have in milgram itself is that one interaction with Kotoko in which she attempts to debate how prisons respect human rights. Any other time he expressed his opinion/stance on things he was aggressive and maybe condescending to the rest because they disagreed with him, but the second someone agreed? Whole demeanor changed. Suddenly he didn't have much to say anymore and he just parroted Kotoko's words back at her. Why. If he has such a strong personality and mindset, why was someone validating his point enough to shut down his otherwise very firm attitude?
Futa doesn't go as far as to manufacture his every word for it to cause a positive reaction on others from the get go, but he does seek validation all the same. He braces himself for rejection by being loud and obnoxious and harsh until he sees a positive reaction and then is when he does a complete 180 to keep the other person in that place of validation. He is simultaneously completely bad at it though, but I never said he was good at people pleasing. Which connects back to what i've said before about his inability to fit in. Even when he thinks he's doing it right and he sees himself getting validation by people he cares about (in the case of his crime, by mimicking his friendgroup's method of "bringing justice" by calling out someone online, that same friendgroup following along and reinforcing the idea that he was doing it right), he ultimately fails anyway and loses it all over again.
In the end, he's just extremely socially awkward and anxious. It isn't in his nature to reach anyone else's expectations even if he genuinely wants to, so he'll either do what he can within his parameters (mold himself for his friendgroup of people he deems similar to him) or he'll avoid trying altogether because he knows he'll fail (what we see in milgram!)
It also shows how his yearn for a support system (t2 qna + mu's birthday timeline convo) isn't particularly new from his current circumstances, or why the only person he could think of when asked who he would want to see right now was his mom (who left so long ago he barely remembers her). He has just never truly had people that genuinely cared for him no matter what he tried to do to make himself likeable.
