Yennega
Princess Yennega (14th-15th centuries) is a legendary figure of the Mossi people of Burkina Faso who ran away from her father and founded the Mossi Kingdoms.
Tumblr media
[Statue of Yennega with a javelin and a bow]
Born to King Nedega and Queen Napoko of the Dagomba Kingdom (modern-day northern Ghana), she was raised to be a warrior from a young age. She fought on horseback with javelins, spears, and bows, and was a military commander. She was such an excellent warrior that her father refused to let her be married--something to which she objected.
Yennega left and traveled north on a stallion, where she met Riale, an elephant hunter from the Boussani. They fell in love and had a son, Ouedraogo. Yennega and Riale reunited with her father, who accepted them into his family. Ouedraogo would then found the Mossi Kingdom (modern-day Burkina Faso).

[Carving of Yennega into a tree]
Yennega is still revered in Burkina Faso, where she is considered the mother of the Mossi Empire. References to her and her stallion are a cultural mainstay in everything from the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou to the national football team of Burkina Faso. Yennega represents the best of the female warrior--strong, free, determined, with her own mind and goals.

CASTING CALL FOR MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IN HISTORY
Because of reasons I'm making a list of the most beautiful women in human history. My criteria are:
Must be before the invention of photography (1840)
Need to have been described as such by contemporary literature, or through secondhand account within a reasonable close time frame.
Need not be called the most beautiful woman period, but should be the most beautiful woman in a geographic area (i.e. Europe, the Islands of Britain, etc.) or at least one of the most beautiful women of the time.
Prominent pseudo-historical women (*) are allowed if there's an approximate time period but they're on thin fucking ice.
Anyway, here's the current list.
EUROPE
Helen of Troy*
Eleanor of Aquitaine: multiple contemporaries call her "more than beautiful."
Elizabeth Woodville: called the most beautiful woman in all of Britain.
Elizabeth of York: said to be a great beauty who strongly resembled her mother.
Mary Tudor: considered one of the most beautiful princesses in Europe and called a "nymph from heaven" by her first husband.
Catharine of Aragon: described as "the most beautiful creature in the world."
ASIA
Xi Shi: one of the four beauties of ancient China. Supposedly so beautiful that when she looked into a pond the fish were so dazzled they forgot to swim and sank.
Wang Zhaojun: second of the four beauties. Said to be so beautiful that when geese saw her they fell out of the sky in shock.
Diaochan*: third of the four beauties and mostly fictional. Said to be so beautiful that when she went outside at night the moon hid behind the clouds in shame.
Yang Guifei: fourth of the four beauties. Said to be so beautiful her face put flowers to shame. The emperor was so enamored with her he had a fleet of couriers traveling non-stop from southern china just to deliver fresh lychees, her favorite fruit.
Ono no Komachi: so well known for her beauty that "komachi" became a synonym for female beauty in Japanese.
Oda Oichi: famous in her time for her beauty, honor, and conduct.
AFRICA
Cleopatra: Plutarch said she wasn't "outstandingly" beautiful, but he was clearly trying to make her look bad.
Yennega*
Moremi Ajasoro*
AMERICAS
literally nothing.
As you can see, I am floundering in certain demographics. PLEASE send help.

Princess Yennenga, a legendary princess warrior who helped unify the Mossi Kingdoms -12th century- in the current Burkina Faso, with her mythical horse Overwinter Enigma (Author unknown).
“And since then has the Sun King understood That a girl is not just made To look good And make children And make food That a girl is also made To look good And ride horses And make conquests And since then has the queen mother also understood That a girl is not just made To look good And wash the dishes And make love That a girl is also made To look good And do the business And make war.”
(own translation)

#internationalwomensday 💕 Yennega- African legend, female warrior and Burkina Faso's female icon, Yennega was a free and independent woman who mothered Ouedraogo, the founder of the dynasties of the Moose chieftains. Her story is set between the fourteenth and fifteenth century, daughter of the King of Gambaga (present day's northern Ghana), Yennega tired of her role as chief warrior, ran away in the forest, here she met a young elephant hunter from another country, Riale. Together they had a son, Ouedraogo. Ouedraogo was the founder of the centuries old lineage of Moose chieftains in Burkina Faso, whose descendants still embody political power today. Yennega is Burkina Faso's national emblem, she personifies independence and freedom, as nothing, society, tradition nor paternal authority could stand in her way. This morning, I asked the cards "What do I need to know about myself?" Every once in a while, I need a reminder about myself. I drew the 8 of Pentacles, Temperance and the 6 of Wands from The Tarot of the Divine. ⭐ The 8 of Pentacles shows a woman working on her craft. She works to free her brothers from a spell by an evil Queen so that they can resume their rltrue form. She doesn't work because she has to, the creates because she has to. It is the same with my creative spirit I write and paint because it is like breathing to me. ⭐ Temperance shows me the Goddesa Bodhisattva. She has many arms to get so many things accomplished. Yet she is also peace and light and balance. She reaches for nirvana and is able to adjust herself to any situation. This relates to my continual quest for balance and the fact that I accomplish so much and I do so with grace and ease most of the time. ⭐ The 6 of Wands shows me the warrior princess Yennega and her father who have come back from battle. They are victorious and joyful because they have overcome their fears. She has struck out on her own path. This card reminds me of what I've overcome and the victories that I've achieved. While life has been a battle, I've been victorious at walking my path and finding myself. ⭐ Sparkle on! ⭐ #tarotreadersofinstagram #tarottribe #tarotofthedivine #creativity #balance #victory #sparkleon #shinebright #likeadiamond #cardoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/CE9DaIQnZlf/?igshid=hvrwn7cabvqq
