the thing about otto is that he had like a ten year headstart here, rhaenyra and her side are dumb fuck idiots for not making sure the stronger houses are on her side BEFORE her father dies BUT otto doesn’t even make sure the allies he is banking on for what he hopes is a BLOODLESS USURPTION OF THE NAMED HEIR are actually his goddamn allies. he just hopes, banks on, CROWNS AEGON WITH THE ASSUMPTION that everyone else fears daemon the way he does (they don’t!) or hate rhaenyra the way he does (they don’t!) and they’ll see the ~truth~ that rhaenyra is not fit for the throne and then WHAT HAPPENS is this man can’t even get HIS OWN REGION to completely support him. dorne tells him to suck shit, the triarchy drag their feet, and both of those are things he could have avoided if he actually Tried just a little earlier? but no he just takes KL and then goes “job well done.” rhaenyra - and corlys and rhaenys! - are short sighted in a way that is lethal and frustrating but otto has all their arrogance and NONE of the juice to back it up.

I thought I could keep quiet, but no. I hate this scene of Otto and Aegon arguing, considering how stupid it is. I can't imagine book!Otto running up to Aegon with such bullshit as hanging rat catchers, humiliating and threatening him. I can't imagine Otto actually threatening his grandson and the king! It's just fucked up! Yes, yes, the series reshapes a lot for itself (just look at Alicent), but Otto's behavior in this scene is so fucked up that I can't review it properly. They mentioned the inaction of the hand, but in the book it was after Rhaenyra's allies were replenished, after she became stronger. In the series… Tell me, does Otto really care about the lives of these pied pipers and what will the commoners think? Because I strongly doubt that from such an act of revenge for the death of the heir, the lords will consider that "well, no, we won't mess with such shit." I doubt.

There are so many things about Rhaenyra and Alicent’s conversation that I love. I love the fear of it, the tension, the massive risk Rhaenyra took and the fact that Alicent didn’t turn her in. I love the love between the two of them, the affection that shines through even despite all the misery and resentment and pain. I love the fact that The Stupid Miscommunication That Causes Conflict™ (in this case, Viserys’ deathbed whispers), which so often either goes entirely unaddressed or isn’t addressed until the end of a character’s arc, is addressed so early and clarifies so much for both characters. I love the devastation as Alicent realizes that this was all a mistake, but that it’s too late to do anything about it, that without this being a war then her son is a kinslayer and her grandson is dead for no reason.

But I also love what Alicent doesn’t mention to Rhaenyra:

That this would have happened with or without Alicent, and that Otto and the small council had already been planning to usurp Rhaenyra all along. That the war would have happened either way.

Alicent leaves their meeting horrified, devastated, her belief in herself and her family shattered… letting Rhaenyra believe that this war lies solely at Alicent’s feet, that it was all Alicent’s mistake. Amazing. Tremendously messy. No notes.

The "Dan Heng is Dan Feng" dogmatics annoy me a lot. It entirely brushes off one of the most interesting and prevalent questions posed by the game, incarnated by several characters and stories that give the question different hues with different potential answers, and a constant also in HI3, like a thread waving the two games together

Summertime- Otis. It's the platonic love song ever, and it's how he feels about Olympia. He doesn't need his headphones because Olympia stops the noise. <3

DESTROYA- Orin. I will Fight anyone who disagrees with me on this. It is slower and Loud, and he's angry like the 11th doctor and an asshole, this song is for HIM. [This is the song I named my larp camp sword after, btw.]

The Kids from Yesterday- Opal. The way she leaves when her journey doesn't feel like it should be over reminds me of how this song is about the singer and the killjoys knowing they're going to die but still doing what they know is right. And the part where the music stops and then gets picked up again but a little different, and you can hear an echo of the singer's voice- it's like how after she leaves Osmerelda carries on her spot.

Ritual Imayoh is such a funny battlesuit concept for me because like. Otto presumably found data on PE's SAKURA and thinks, oh wow that looks like the miko who seduced my Kallen. He then creates a game where he can flaunt his fantasies for a badass superhero Kallen in a design that DIRECTLY MIRRORS the outfit of 'Sakura' he found online, and then PUTS THE SAKURA IN AS THE FINAL BOSS. It's likely that he wanted people to find joy in beating up Sakura but boy did he underestimate the homoerotic subtext the entire ordeal will bring.

Was going to make a joke about a rwrb rhaenicent au but that’s pretty much just a modern au I think. Princess rhaenyra who they changed the succession rules for which is a big deal to the daily mail or whatever and alicent as a diplomat’s daughter who taps out of their situationship at the very first tabloid piece, gets whisked away by her da and entrenched further into his conservative politics, which leads to her garnering her own politic career with the singleminded goal of starting a nuclear war with England
