Recently I saw people slandering Ace for what he did in the last few chapters of ep 1 to Riddle and because I am petty and salty, I'm going to defend Ace to the death here like my life depends on it

*I've posted this before but this time I'm going into more detail so yeah. Also this is written with spite I am going to be so passive aggressive sorry

why ace demanding a tart and a party from riddle is not bad, you guys just cant read, an analysis:

Let us begin by establishing what happens on the surface of the last few scenes of ep 1.

Riddle has just come back from overblotting. He begins to admit to the things he always wanted as well as the things he cared/didn't care about. For example, he lists that he wanted to eat the chestnut tart that Ace and friends prepared. He likes milk tea better than lemon tea, he wants to hang out with his friends and talk to lots of people after a meal.

After saying these things, he promptly breaks down, crying. However, the moment is ruined as Ace tells him that he won't forgive him, just because he's crying, and he promptly demands a party and a tart.

To some, this may be seen as an assholish move. Riddle has finally admitted to his wrongs, and yet Ace has the audacity to see this broken kid in tears and go "I still don't forgive you". That's terrible right?

WRONG.

Now that we have established what happens on the surface, let us establish reasons as to why Ace may be upset at Riddle, just to have everything on the table first because there is a lot to unpack here.

First off, Riddle kicked Ace out of his own dorm. This issue was brushed over, as Ace went to Yuu for shelter, but let's really stop to consider how ridiculous this is. Riddle, a dorm head, whose job is to care for the students in his dorm, kicked Ace out of the dorm without knowing if he would even have a place to sleep at night...because he ate his food.

If Ace had no friends at the time, he would have no where to sleep, and considering this is a magical school, there might be weird shit crawling around at night and idk about you but the prospect of it is completely terrifying to me. Not to mention, Ace is a first year. Everything on campus is new and unfamiliar to him. This has got to make things at least a good percentage more terrifying.

Secondly, Riddle threw away the tart that Ace made for him. At this point, Ace has come to the conclusion that he idk needs a place to sleep at night and he needs to be able to use magic (Riddle's collar is still cancelling Ace's magic...in a magic school. This is objectively detrimental to his studies). And so he makes Riddle a tart, not even being sassy about it, like the guy genuinely is offering this hoping to be forgiven. And what does Riddle do? Throw it away.

Working hard on something, and having someone badmouth it is one thing. To have the person you made said thing for PHYSICALLY DESTROY IT right in front of you...is probably not a good feeling. Ace is stronger than me I would've cried but anyways

Thirdly, in case you guys forgot, Ace was pissed but still kept his calm until Riddle insulted Yuu's lack of education, as well as the fact that their parents could not use magic. Despite everything that had happened to him, Ace did not snap and resort to violence until his friend was insulted. The only time he actually lost it was when he became angry on behalf of his friend, as well as the only person that would let him stay over after Riddle had kicked him out of his dorm.

I don't know if this particular fact plays any part in Ace's anger, but it's something to note that Riddle calls out Yuu for having parents who cannot use magic, and Ace has mentioned that his father cannot use magic either. It's possible that he may have taken it personally as well, but that fact was not revealed at the time of Episode 1's release, so I won't go into it much.

Fourth and lastly, putting aside all previous offenses, Riddle straight up nearly killed Ace. Yes, Riddle was not in the right state of mind and yes, going through overblot is extremely stressful and damaging to him. But the one being attacked was Ace. Overblot is exceedingly rare, and there were a variety of ways this could have gone badly had they not had the power of plot armor. Honestly, the fact that Ace wasn't angrier with Riddle is commendable because how do you respond to someone apologizing for almost killing you like.

C'mon now. Be honest how many of you guys would be willing to forgive and forget. Would you not feel a little wary? Or upset? Because I guess now you can't even be properly angry because he apparently wasn't in the right state of mind when he tried to kill you. I'm sure it was probably complicated for Ace but he handled it like a champ tbh. Anyways

Now we have established all the reasons why Ace is, (hopefully by now you guys understand) understandably angry, I hope you guys keep these things in mind as we continue forth.

Since we have now laid out the facts, let us finally dive into the actual analysis.

Regardless of how we feel about Ace's alleged insensitivity and demands, we can all agree that what Riddle did to Ace was in no way okay right? It was straight up shitty. And what did Ace ask for as compensation for 1) kicking him out of his dorm 2) throwing away his hard work 3) insulting his friend and 4) nearly killing him? A redo party and a tart.

My guy could've asked for anything in the world, anything at all. Riddle knew his faults, and he probably knew that Ace had every right to embarrass him, punish him, or ask something outrageous of him.

And yet all that he asked for was a redo party and a tart that Riddle himself baked. It almost sounds too simple, too easy really. This is the first sign that what he asked for is not as simple as what it may seem on the surface.

But before we talk about that, let's loop back to the whole point of this chapter. Riddle was a tyrant because he never faced any consequences for his actions. There are two sides to this. The first side is as mentioned above, he was a tyrant because no one ever thought to berate him for his actions.

Riddle overblotting and nearly straight up killing people is by far the biggest mistake he could have ever made. It's not something small, it could actually end someone's life. If you don't enforce some consequences then, when will you enforce consequences? Until someone actually dies???

That is precisely why Riddle needed to face some sort of consequence for his actions. In this case, what the consequences were did not matter. What mattered was that he needed to know "What you did was wrong and when you do this shitty thing, something is going to happen".

Now, the second side to Riddle's complex is the fact that Riddle may be an absolute tyrant now, but in his childhood, he was reprimanded and punished for the smallest of mistakes. Being punished is a large part of his trauma, which is exactly why I mentioned above "something is going to happen" instead of "there will be punishment for bad behavior". Because what Riddle needs is not punishment, and Ace knows this.

Ace knew full well that Riddle was in a rough spot, and he saw Riddle breaking down in front of his eyes. He could've humiliated Riddle as punishment, kick him out of the dorm, make him face the same things Ace himself went through as a result of Riddle's actions. However, he asked for a redo party and a tart, neither of which Riddle associates with "punishment". On the contrary, these are things Riddle likes.

Moments before Riddle cries, he admits that he wanted to eat the tart Ace made for him, and that he wanted to hang out with friends too.

What Ace requested of Riddle was less for himself and more for Riddle. He gave him a consequence that would require hard work, but did not have any traumatic or negative associations tied to it. If anything, it would be something Riddle enjoyed doing. It was not punishment, it was a consequence. It's much more gentle than any consequence Riddle had ever faced in his life.

This is also further demonstrated when Ace was able to laugh off his tart tasting horribly. If he really cared about the party, if he really cared about the tart, if any of his demands meant anything personally to him, Ace would've been more upset. But he wasn't.

When Ace refused to forgive Riddle as he cried, many characters called him out for being a jerk. However, Yuu comments after Ace demands a redo party and a tart, saying that Ace isn't very honest. They know that Ace's way of saying things may be rude, but he truly does have Riddle's best interests in mind.

Also side note but I think it's really funny how Ace gets so much shit for interrupting Riddle and saying he won't forgive him, when TREY was also part of the conversation. Riddle started crying, Ace says he won't forgive Riddle, and Trey comes in and says no what you did was wrong and you need to apologize rn 💀

Only after that did Ace demand a redo party and yet people are out here bitching about Ace being terrible to Riddle and not forgiving him instantly while he's crying.

Trey interjecting to tell Riddle off is like a key point in his character arc too because he finally stepped up to say something when Riddle was in his right mind so idk how u guys just conveniently forgot Trey's involvement in Riddle's post overblot and pin everything on Ace.

However TO CONCLUDE, the party and tart that Ace asked for was very much a form of symbolism and a chance for Riddle to start over with a clean slate.

(Also last minute adding this in but having a redo party is a great idea because things may still be tense between Riddle and his dorm mates, and if Riddle is now hosting another party without all the strictness, it will show to his previously angered dorm mates that he has changed and they have no need to be wary of/continue to hate him.)

It is not just Ace being selfish or Ace being mean and I'm going to bite the next person that says so. Thank u for coming to my ted talk

it actually rages me and this is why i hate twitter and this is why im going to go into a rant about how these characters actually do have fucking depth and personality to them and that people need to stop pushing their outrageous agendas on people and being toxic xoxo

So, one main point I want to make is obviously Dazai and Chuuya, that's my main point here. They are separate entities as much as they are one. They have their own personalities, their own pasts, their own feelings, thoughts; they're fucking human. But something that a lot of people seem to want to do is make Chuuya's personality Dazai. That Chuuya is salty with him for leaving the mafia, and that Chuuya's "trauma" is Dazai (that man has fucking far worse trauma, Dazai leaving the mafia is not traumatic to him, especially when it had nothing to fucking do with the poor guy), and that his whole being is simply just Dazai. Dazai, the man who admitted that he spent every waking second thinking about Chuuya. The guy who got himself caught by the mafia partly because he wanted to see Chuuya. Are we all forgetting the dead apple scene? It's far more accurate to say that Dazai's personality is Chuuya, jesus fucking christ. That guy forgot to breathe when he watched Chuuya fighting like??? He's so homo, anyways.

Their characters are integral to each other, and they're made for one another (I'm saying this as a character creating thing, not romantically lmao (although-) ) and they compliment each other perfectly, they're perfect rivals. And, they can stand on their own as their own people, their own characters. Yes, whilst we meet Chuuya through Dazai in the series, and we see him as Dazai's ex-partner, the more information we get and the more content we receive about/from Chuuya steadily make him his own individual character, and Stormbringer cemented that.

I'm going to talk about the "Chuuya has trauma from Dazai leaving" thing because I saw it on Wattpad and it pissed me off.

Chuuya's trauma doesn't stem from Dazai, of fucking course it doesn't. It stems from Arahabaki, it stems from not knowing who he is, it stems from N (piece of shit), it stems from all his friends dying, it stems from being betray by his friends; this fucking guy has been put through the fucking mill, and yet the only thing that people like to focus on is how Dazai leaving affected him.

Dazai's defection from the mafia wasn't because of Chuuya, it was because of Oda. This is blatantly fucking obvious, yet again, some people like to think otherwise. Some people like to believe the most abhorrent shit. I swear there was someone one time that said he left because he "couldn't handle his feelings ofr Chuuya" like fuck off oh my god oh my god.

These two each have their own issues and their own traumas separate from each other. Can we please let Chuuya be his own character and let him have a personality without shitting on it?

These motherfuckers will scratch at anything, absolutely anything, to make anything about Chuuya to do with Dazai. Not every bad thing that happens to a character has to be topped by your deluded fantasies. "Oh, Chuuya was tortured? But Dazai-" LIKE NO FUCK OFF. We literally have NOTHING on the man, and you want to make some bullshit up just so that he can, what, be more mentally ill than others? Bruh? I don't know what these people are scheming or planning, but comparing trauma and saying that a character's is worse is so fucking awful and makes others feel like shit. I've always struggled with mine, because I constantly tell myself that worse things have happened to worse people, so I am a hypocrite here. But I understand how trauma works and affects people, and that it affects people differently. Your worst experience could be different to somebody elses, but you'll both be heavily affected by it. Chuuya doesn't show signs of the amount of immense trauma he has (mans internalises it and won't let himself show it because that's how he is pls PLS somebody give this man a fucking hug) whereas Dazai is clearly not right in the head; this doesn't mean you're allowed to say "Oh, Dazai has worse trauma clearly" because we have nothing about his past. We hardly have anything from his time at the mafia except his first mission, and his last. What happened in between for those 3-4 years? We don't know. We know bits now thanks to Stormbringer and Dead Apple about the Dragon's Head Conflict, but we still don't have much to go off. We haven't even had so much as a hint towards the first 14 years of his life, and we don't know anything about those two years he went undercover, except that he was unemployed and frequented Bar Lupin (I always thought about how the bartender felt after finding out about Oda but hey :') ), but other than that, we have virtually nothing on the man. We never know how he's feeling, what he's thinking, etc. He is a complex character, and he's made that way as a character because, and I cannot stress this enough, that is his character. Sorry, I derailed a bit there. Anyways, what I mean to say is that you can't use Dazai being bat-shit crazy as evidence for your delusions. That's his character, and yes, he may be influenced by his trauma, but we can only speculate. Clearly something has gone awry in his life for him to think the way he does and to crave death so badly, and to just be the way he is now. But, as I said before, trauma affects everyone differently. Just because Chuuya doesn't want to fucking kill himself does not mean that his trauma should be brushed aside and glossed over. Chuuya puts up a front because he doesn't want to be weak; all his life people have relied on his ability and his strength and wit to get them through, and even though the Mafia go a different way about it than the sheep, his ability and strength is still utilised; it's like Sigma, and Yosano. Nobody wants to be used, yet they still end up in a cycle of it until someone can come along to get them out of it. Supposedly Chuuya has been taken out of that cycle from the Sheep, but not necessarily so. Yes, the Mafia treats him better. But it doesn't really. Ah fuck I'm making zero sense yikes. Sorry, my bad. Ignore that lol.

ANYWAY sorry to cut this short, but my point still stands that Chuuya's character and personality does not solely revolve around Dazai, the man who has his ex-partner on his mind 24/7 and makes him come save him like a disney princess. Anyways lol.

These characters are their own people, and trauma isn't a competition. You don't have to come up with the most abhorrent shit to make Dazai's situation "worse" and then force that onto everyone else and start berating and belittling them when they don't believe you. ANYWAYS I am so sorry about this, the last few nights have been hectic for me.

Anyways I'll definitely be coming back to this, rn I'm honestly just too fucked to finish <3

Chapter II

Day Before Heading To Korea

“What the fuck did you just say y-you” he said as his voice breaks from too much pain that the love of his life gave him “Only loved me for money” Mina get’s herself off from the man as she tries to get close to Mark “ Mark no you, you heard wrong, I love you not because of your money” he pushed Mina away as he made eye contact with the guy making him punch him hard releasing all the anger “ I did not hear wrong, how dare you cheat on me” he said eyeing Mina, she begged Mark all over and over  and the man she was having sex with said “Just leave that good for nothing asshole Mina” his words made every vein from Mark pop that’s why he punches the guy again and again and again in which the guy returned but Mark was overpowering as he threw more punches, Mina tried to stop them both but she was too weak to stop them soon after he gave the final punch that made the guy fall “I am not good for nothing, in fact I have money which both of you don’t have” he said in the most angry tone he has ever been, Mina and the guy was left shocked with his words they felt very belittle by it “And for you Mina, I loved you and all along my parents were right you are nothing but a gold digger” it made Mina cry even harder, regret filling her all over as she tried to reach Mark only to be pushed away hard enough that her belly hit the side of the bed, soon after that blood filled the room Mark was alarmed remembering his baby so he gave the ambulance a call. When they arrived in the hospital Mina was immediately checked and he found out his baby died his blood and flesh died, regret, blame and all different emotions filled him mostly blaming Mina if she did not cheat on him this will not happen. He left her that day returning to his parents because of how sorry he feels he defended her yet they were right all along, after that Mark has changed he no longer is the bubbly and friendly Mark he became a bad boy fucking every single girl not caring about them at all or would have a girlfriend but would cheat on them on multiple occasions, no relationship after Mina lasted as he thought all people care about is money not how he feels.

Day Before Heading To Korea

Walking he saw his secretary slash friend Taeil he immediately orders him to buy the plan B for the girl he just banged or just anything to prevent her from getting pregnant “Sir why do you fuck girls when you don’t want them to get pregnant” his secretary exclaimed “Come on Taeil don’t play innocent who knows you might’ve banged as much as I did or even more” he said teasing him to which Taeil returned with a huge shake of his head “Nope,nope I’m not like you and never will, well infact I am getting married soon” Mark was shocked not really believing Taeil so he slapped his arm “Your jokes are getting better” he laughed while Taeil had a straight face “Im not kidding my girlfriend really said yes and we are getting married” Mark stopped laughing with a face of disbelief that made Taeil chuckle now “Your gonna settle with someone now?” he questions “Hahaha Mark yes I am” he pats Mark’s shoulder “Wow, why is everyone around me getting married, you should know that the single life is way better” he said while clicking his toungue “Being single is indeed better, but when you love someone you would prefer to be with them every minute and every second and then it would be better for you because you love each other” he said lovingly making Mark laugh “You are madly in love hyung” he laughs “I bet when you meet your match you will also be madly in love with her” Mark shook his head showing a big X sign with his arms “Loving someone crazily will only kill you ,plus I know for sure all they want from me is my money” he said protesting and Taeil gave him a comforting smile before he turns his back to return to work.

Mark headed to the rooftop to get some fresh air while doing so he reminisce his past about Mina and Taeil’s words about him finding true love, discovering that there is indeed a part of him that wants to meet someone that loves him for him and not his money but before he could think more he shrugs it off and in que his phone rings and the caller was his Dad, he answers the phone.

Dad : “Son how have you been there in Canada?” his father questions with a giddy tone

Mark: “Here alive and well” he answers bluntly

Dad: “That’s good, how about the company is it doing well?” he questions further

Mark: “Of course it’s doing exceptionally well, is that all you have to ask” he ask as he sense there is something more with his phone call

Dad: ” Well uhm son I need you to come to Korea asap” he said as he cleared his throat

Mark: “How about our company here, it needs me dad” he said, but actually deep down he is not ready to come back to Korea because coming back means revisiting his past.

Dad: “I already fixed that, your brother is coming to Canada to manage the company”

Mark: “But Dad I’m not really sure I actually don’t want to go back”

Dad: “Look Mark, honestly I wanted to ask you kindly first to hear your first reaction but I just want to inform you that even if you say no, I want you to come home here as soon as you can”

Mark: “Dad but I- I ok fine yes I will come go to Korea as soon as I can but do I just leave?”

Dad: “Yes Mark and starting the day you come back here you will manage the company in Korea plus you need to attend a charity ball this week Saturday”

Mark: “ Ok Dad I get it” he said with a defeated tone

And his Dad hangs up, he doesn’t really want to go and feels very hesitant having an inner conflict with himself, his phone rang again and the caller this time is Taeil telling him to get back to the meeting as lunch break was already over, he endured several more meetings after another until it was finally over to signify his day will finally end. He went back to his office massaging the temples of his forehead as he sat down to think about the many things that bothers him, he then pages for Taeil through his phone, Taeil rushed to see him asking what are his orders for him, Mark stood up and told Taeil “Book me a flight to Korea tomorrow” Taeil took note of it as schok embodied him “Tomorrow sir? And Korea?” he knows that Mark hates Korea for the reason behind it being Mina but he repeated “Yes tomorrow to Korea also you are coming with me” he said as he grabs his things preparing to leave work “B-but sir why shall I come with you and how about my wedding?” he inquires worriedly “It’s part of your job as my secretary and as for you wedding if your soon to be wife loves you so much she can wait oh and make sure it’s a one way ticket” Taeil was very schoked with Mark’s action but before he can speak up more Mark was waves him goodbye making his exit.

The next day Mark woke up with a not so good mood, he made his secretary Taeil pack for him and for which Taeil cursed him for, after packing they head in to his car to drive to the airport Mark tried to get some sleep but he can’t seem to get some with all the flashback memories filling him, they arrived in the airport, checked in and headed to the first class seats of the plane, the whole plane ride was spent with drinking, sleeping and eating for he past 15hrs and after all that has passed he finally hears the flight attendant proclaim” Flight #127 to Seoul South Korea has now landed” and there he was in the land he long abandoned, the land filled with bright yet devastating memories, he shut his eyes preparing himself, as he finally left the plane he feels the jet lag kicking and decided to go to his parents house, just as he thought everyone was asleep due to the very dim lighting he was surprised by his parents with a huge “WELCOME HOME” banner, and he thought to himself “This is it Mark you are really here”.

persona 5 strikers thoughts and feelings

This is going to be a long post. Like, the type of post you’d only really have time to read when you’re trying to sleep but you’re not ready to be unconscious yet so you’re just looking for something to do to spend your time with minimal effort. 

So in 2018, a masterpiece was born into the world: Into the Spider-verse was released and it was amazing—it’s honestly the best spiderman movie we have without a doubt, and it’ll be very far into the future before Spider-verse is beaten as the best spiderman movie. Them’s the facts. Then in 2019, Spider-man: Far From Home was dropped. It’s a great movie! Great characters, great continuation of who these characters are and works fantastic as a continuation of a story. It’s really hard trying to take the torch of a previous movie (or in Marvel’s case, juggling twenty something movies) and come up with a new movie that both works on its own, as well as being the next step in this series of films. Thus, with that idea in mind, I think it’s kind of unfair to judge into the spiderverse and far from home, because these are two movies with two completely different objectives in mind. 

Okay, so this is still a persona 5 strikers post, I promise, but the idea is the same: Persona 5 could basically do whatever it wanted—new story, new characters, new everything, and it’s just plain old awesome. However, Persona 5 strikers did not have that sort of freedom. It was bound to the original game, and it had its own rules and stuff it had to keep intact, characters they had to work with, and on top of that, it had to justify its existence as a sequel (lets pretend money doesnt exist lmfao). 

SO, the big question is: did it do that? Did it justify its existence? 

And my answer: holy fuck did it ever do that

I came into this game knowing the extreme bare minimum. I knew there was someone named Sophia, and i knew there was roadtrip, and i knew there were Personas. That’s my knowledge of it before i played it on the Switch.  I should also clarify like, early on, that i was not expecting anything from this game. At all. I was the world’s biggest cynic of this game—if you scroll down my p5s tag far enough, youll just see me complaining about a game that hasn’t even come out yet. I was fully expecting to have this be a Waifu show, and any male character that isn’t Akira to just be shoved aside like some kind of nerd in a high school hallway, and i have never been more pleased to be wrong. In fact, i actually owe it an apology, because of how fucking rude i was for no reason!!! Because this game deserves everything to be honest. 

Persona 5 strikers is, frankly, insane. Insane in the sense that it got to pull shit off that just would never have existed in the original game, because the original game is scared. It had to be as impressive as possible and garner as much attention as possible. Strikers does not have that problem—every single person who bought that game does not need to be convinced that persona 5 is a good game. They already played it. That means Atlus can just fuck around and have a good time, and man did they have a good time. There’s still scenes that still shock me if i think about it too hard, because i’m used to atlus having to follow this sort of rule set when it comes to persona 5 (or any of the main games im assuming, but i havent played them.) And on top of that, there’s still shit that’s Atlus Trademarked Branded in a good way. The style of story of story telling, and revealing the mystery that is so integral to what p5 is, is still there. 

So, to make this even a little bit comprehensible, i will make a list! 

First of all, What is this game?

In short, this game is an OVA of an anime. It’s bonus side content that has one thing in mind: to showcase these lovable characters more by putting them in fun situations. That’s it, and it is just phenomenal. That was the main point of, i’d say, like forty hours of the game. It’s just fun times with fun characters. 

But to get deeper of what i think is happening, or what they were thinking during the development, is that this is a second opportunity. Persona 5 (as we all know) had a lot of problems, and we were not quiet about those problems. We yelled it all out, made posts, made complaints on every social media platform ever. And Atlus heard all of them, and Strikers is a way to mitigate those mistakes. Aside from being a fun OVA, Strikers also works to be a deeper exploration of these characters—more specifically, the characters that did not receive much in the original game. Creating this sequel is having the ability to redo what they felt (or to be more specific, we felt) in the original game while adding new ones. I will get to that in a second.  

The format of the game 

Absolutely brilliant to throw them on a road trip. P5V already forced us to experience Shibuya for 200+ hours, and im so glad that they didn’t do that again. Going from town to town, making us experience these new places alongside our favorite characters is so good, and it just makes sense. It’s fun, it’s lighthearted, and it’s actually shockingly good. But one thing i do want to talk about early on is the way the story unfolds and the villains that they use, and what they do with it because it’s very interesting. 

So as we explore japan and stuff, we encounter jails, and with those jails comes an antagonist. This antagonist works to be a parallel to one of our characters. That character will find it in their hearts to feel bad for the antagonist, because the antagonist could have been them had the original game not happen. At first I thought all of the thieves were gonna get an antagonist, and i was really hyped for the ryuji one. And then came to hour forty of the game where i realized “yeah that’s not gonna happen. There’s just not enough time.” And i was right, and the game ended. But i am not salty at all, honestly, because the people who got a direct antagonist were: Ann, Yusuke, and Haru. (we wont count zen and sophie). 

Is there a trend??? Yes. these are all characters in the original game that have received the worst treatment by atlus. The three of them are basically cast aside the minute they finished their original arc, and its horrible! BUT that’s why this is the path that atlus chose for them—to give them more depth, and screentime, and a way to show their inner self. That isn’t to say that the ones who aren’t those three (makoto, futaba, mona, akira, ryuji) didn’t get anything. Futaba still has her thing at the end with ichinose, and she was very prevalent and animated during the rest of the game. Mona and Akira have to be a focal points, that’s just the nature of the game. The other two though, I will talk about in depth in a second.  

Makoto

Y’all i poke fun at shumako fans sometimes cause its kind of easy and fun, but i honestly love makoto. In my very first playthrough of p5 (my first ever jrpg game, first persona game, i had no idea what i was doing), i had only maxed out two characters: ryuji and makoto. And i know she had a lot of screentime and love in the original game which is great, but i truly felt like she was dissed in this game. Her only roles were

A driver

Someone to tell them “we don’t have a choice. Let’s keep going and see where this takes us.” (seriously, if you replay this game, you will see how much she does this)

Idk, i just wish she had more to do, especially compared to how much love they gave the other characters. 

But let’s talk about some of the new characters! 

Zenkichi

Damn you atlus. Damn you and your insistence at bringing in cop characters. I was fully on board with hating zenkichi, i was fucking ready for it. I was convinced that there was nothing they could do convince to like zenkichi. I was immune to their copaganda. 

And then i ended up loving him, which makes me sad a little bit. I didn’t realize how desperate i was to have an adult who has a persona. Someone who wants the world to change just as much as they do, while still having that aspect of them that makes them adult. Like??? As someone who is technically an adult, its a breath of fresh air. An adult. Who fights. For justice. Using a persona. And god i love akane so much, and her obsession with the thieves (that scene is probably in my top ten fave scenes of the game). Also what i loved about zenkichi is that he fucking hates the cops!! He hates the system of the cops!! And thats why i actually really started to love him!! Because i thought it was atlus saying that the systematic problem of the police cannot be solved by one person, and zenkichi threw away his badge. I actually cried at that part!! 

But then he became a cop again, and i was just :/ but as a character, i really love him to bits and would love to do a study on him, or at least use him as an outside pov. But! i absolutely love his persona, since im a les miserables fan hehe

Sophia 

she’s probably my favorite new aspect of the game. I was ready to not like her—again, i just suck like that, lmfao—and when i saw her, i was scared that she was just another waifu. I mean, she was very cute after all. But then as the game went on, i thought she was a little too cute. And even further into the game, i finally slapped myself in the face and realized oh my god shes not a waifu. Shes a sister. 

That blew my mind, im ngl to you. A female character that isn’t supposed to be romanced? By jove, what a miracle! 

And she…is an amazing character. Im sorry, i just love her so much. I love her so much that she  probably ranks as my fifth or sixth favorite character which is surprising even to me. Everything about her is delightful and invigorating. She’s funny??? Her comedic timing is amazing, and she has such chemistry with the rest of the team. She’s actually useful to the plot, and while her character design is a little too on the nose for me in terms of cuteness (i mean, good god she’s wearing oversized sweater to show how cute and tiny she is, and her hair has literal hearts in it), she is absolutely lovable. 

But what i actually really wanna gush about for a second is sophia at the last stage of the game. You get the idea, i dont really like to get excited over things, so at this point i figured that there was nothing this game could do to shock me. 

And then sophia had a persona awakening. 

Like. holy fuck did i yell. I didnt realize what was happening until the music had already kicked in. and its just so fucking smart!!! Sophia??? The ai?? With no heart?? gOT A PERSONA???? AWAKENING??? BECAUSE SHE LEARNED WHAT THE HEART IS AND THE PASSION THAT YOU NEED IN ORDER TO GET A PERSONA??? I started crying honestly, because it was just so smart. And looking back on it now, its obvious!! Of course it would lead to this, it only made sense that the culmination of her character arc leads to her getting a persona, nothing else would have been as good. Also, her voice actor is just amazing?? When she was talking to ichinose at the end, i actually got incredibly emotional because of the line reads. Its just so spot on and it really captures the essence of sophia.

Muah. five stars Atlus. You got me. 

Ryuji <3!!!!

Oh man. Oh boy. Okay. so where do i start. 

Yall know i love him. Hes probably my favorite fictional male character of all time, and he is the one i was the absolute most cynical about in this game. I was expecting literally nothing. Nothing. Like. nothing. I thought he was just gonna keep being used as a joke, or a gag, and he’s gonna be super horny all the time for the other girls and it was gonna make me mad and there was gonna be some insane homophobic/queerphobic jokes in every other scene and i know i was being unfair, but i cant help it. 

And then i played the first two hours of the game, and i cried the entire time. Because ryuji has never been better than he is in this game. Its crazy. 

The ryuji in persona 5 strikers is who ryuji should have been/how he should have been treated this entire time. From the actual funny jokes (for example, the gold bar joke + his reaction to it in the beginning of the game), defending his female friends instead of being the one people need to defend from (natsume arc), and the fact that he was the one to be there with morgana and akira in the very beginning of the game. Its such a small thing that they didnt even need to do, but it was such an integral part of the original game for me, that i just was convinced that nothing like this was going to happen. But then it happened. Its just small stuff like that that could have been overlooked but it wasn’t because this game? Persona 5 strikers? Fucking loves ryuji. 

The actual respect they gave this boy is insane and i wasn't ready for it. Like, they gave the shujin trio lunch, they gave the little charm of the katana when they were in natsume’s jail, and, in my opinion this is the second-best thing that they could have given ryuji is sophia. Ryuji and sophia are the pinnacle of a brother & sister bonding relationship in the game that isn’t akira & futaba. And its really prevalent too?? Small stuff from the beginning of the game (pulling her out of a jail, calling her shorty), but then you have the iconic “shut the fuck up” scene, and that scene was so well characterized and written and voice acted, that somehow him saying “fuck” was the least exciting part of that scene to me. Ryuji is an older brother to her, like its undoubtable, and its only further cemented at the end of the game where Ryuji helps out ichinose because he knows how much sophia cares about her. This game. Love ryuji. And i love. This game. 

You know what else i love? Akiryu. 

Guys. i was fully prepared to starve in terms of akiryu. But theres just. So much of it. I wont get too deep into it, because i think this aspect of the game for me still needs marinate a little bit. Like, what was that last shot when EMMA died and Ryuji walked to approach Akira so they could relish in their victory together?? And the smile from both of them??? What the fuck. That was amazing. Also Joker being saved by Ryuji when he was about to fall from the cliff to save sophia??? WHAT. The LEADER AND HIS RIGHT HAND MAN? WHAT. anyway. If theres anything i want to keep for myself in my own brain, its the akiryu aspect of this game, so i wont talk too much about that part of things (instead, itll probably manifest in fic lmfaooo). 

Sure, there’s tidbits of stuff i dont like that they gave ryuji: sexualizing ann in that one cut scene and making him touch the jails even though it hurts, and i recognize those and frown at them, but for the most part, i am blown away with how they treated him.

Basically, Ryuji has never been better. From the opening of the game with him being the first text message and the one to sling his arm around akira, to the very last cut scene where it was ryuji wordlessly leaving because he’s so confident that they would never be separated for long, this game adores Ryuji and i am so so happy to say that.

The Royal aspect of things

Yeah, i had to talk about this, but itll be a short thing i just wanted to point out. Because the last part of this game...is persona 5 royal. Which is curious. Like taking reality and giving that power to someone else so you dont have to experience suffering anymore? And even like, the final section just looked a lot like the top half of maruki’s palace?? And whats even crazier is that we had a boss fight with sophia, just like how we had a boss fight with sumire? Royal and Strikers have like, the same thesis statement. It’s kind of uncanny.It’s interesting, it’s like atlus came up with these two ideas, and then just decided they liked both of them so much that they just did it twice. I don’t mind though—actually, in terms of how the last Palace/Jails go, i probably like them both about equally. 

Though i did love the final battle in this one more than i did in royal. Splitting into teams?? Thats cool as fuck, and really innovative and i didnt see it coming. It also kicked my ass. A lot. 

Now for the last stretch: the small stuff!

The music — bomb as fuck. In my heart, Daredevil is ranked the same as Rivers. Axe to grind is also amazing, but Daredevil owns me

Akechi — i really debated whether or not to talk about him, but i figured a bullet point should be enough. Im really shocked that he wasnt in this at all. Like not even a name drop. If this is an OVA, and the point of the game is to please the fans, and akechi is arguably the fan favorite character, i was really ready for something. But there was nothing, except for the pancake hallway if that even counts as a reference. Thats it. Thats all i wanted to say about him.

The humour — FUCKING HILARIOUS im convinced that in my fifty hour playtime, five of that is dedicated to me laughing and unable to continue the game 

Akira — so much personality! His lines of dialogue are crazy sometimes (like. Whats up with him saying Ryuji has ‘nice abs’ when they were in bath? Im crazy and even i dont know what the fuck that could mean) 

Battle system — oh my god i almost forgot to talk about this. I love it! I kind of miss the turn based aspect just because i found it very comforting for some reason, but this hack and slash style of gameplay is so invigorating because i do feel like it justifies shit like the baton pass and huge attacks.  This battle system fully encompases how the Phantom Thieves are supposed to fight, you know what i mean?

Anyway, thats my thoughts on strikers. Loved it. Amazing. 9.3/10, wouldve been higher but Konoe’s Jail almost bored me to death. Also im a monster and i didnt do any requests that isn’t a fun one, teehee. As if i play persona 5 for the persona aspect of things.

"So, what are you guys doing for Halloween?" You were having a nice evening with the boys at the pub, and thinking that maybe you could do that again soon.

"Horror movie marathon!" Harry cheered. "Starts at sunset and goes all the way to sunrise."

"It's our little tradition." Sam added. “We dress up in Halloween themed pajamas or a comfortable costume.”

"Harry picks the movies and we all watch it together." Tuwaine explained a little bit more.  “Then we sleep for the rest of November 1st because we’re tired.”

"You should come this year." Tom asked and all the boys nodded in agreement.

You really wanted to say yes. Ever since you became a part of their little group, you were comfortable and you wanted to spend some more time with them. Plus, you had a massive crush on Harrison and even though he always gives you the signal that he likes you too, you've never even kissed once.

And you really wanted to spend some time with him, because you always longed for those small moments together. But you hated scary because you were terrified of them. Although, you would never admit it to anyone.

"Oh, thank you for the offer but I don't wanna be a burden."

"Come on, it will be fun." Harrison nudged your side and smiled softly. "I would love to have you there." 

All the boys smirked with your little interaction, which made you blush a little and lower your sight to your drink. You took a big gulp before replying:

"Okay, sure. It will be nice."

But if you were being honest, everything was building your nerves up since that night at the pub. Not only the fact that you were going to watch horror movies, but also the fact that you would be spending the whole night at Harrison's house. It didn't matter if a whole bunch of other people would tag along, it still felt intimate.

So you put up your best Halloween themed outfit when you dressed up with your skeleton pajama jumpsuit. You did want to feel comfortable, but you also wanted to look cool. And that was a good way to do that. When the sun was starting to set, you drove to the boy’s place and found the driveway decorated with carved pumpkins and tombstones. The boys really put some effort into the decoration.

You knocked on the door and Harrison opened it up dressed as Freddy Krueger, but with sweatpants. He was holding a bowl of candy and a weird smile on his face, which softened when he saw who it was. He thought it would be just some kids from the neighbourhood asking for candy, but it was actually you - the girl he was in love with.

“Trick or treat!” You said with an exciting smile on your face.

“Hey, (Y/N). Happy Halloween.” 

“Thanks.” 

“Please, come in!”

You were the last to arrive. Well, to be fair, Tom, Harrison, Harry and Tuwaine lived in that house and Sam lived just a little further down the road, so it was only fair that they arrived early. But Sam’s girlfriend was already wrapped around him as they chose the best position to cuddle into the movie, and all the boys were already groaning because the girls they invited said they would not be coming.

“Yeah, whatever. Let’s just start this thing.” Harry shrugged as he pressed play on the movie.

“Uhm, sorry. They are a bit boring today.” Harrison whispered since A Nightmare Before Christmas was already playing on the TV. “There’s no place left on the big couch, but I guess we can squeeze in the two-seat couch.”

“It’s okay for me.”

“Come on, I got us a pumpkin blanket.”

Spending time with Harrison was awesome, and this was probably the closest you’ve ever been to the boy. He made sure to share a blanket with you as you watched the first movie. He shared his popcorn and even invited you to give some candy to the kids that were knocking on the door. By now, the movie night was going pretty well because the movie wasn’t scary at all.

But the next movie on the list was The Ring and you were terrified of it. You tried to hide it from everyone, but eventually, you would wince and jump scared of what you were watching. Once you even hide your face on Harrison’s shoulder after a little scream.

“Hey, are you okay?” He whispered and you shook your head, still not looking at the TV. “Oh, you’re scared.”

“A little.” You groaned and felt the boy wrap his arms around you.

“It’s okay, I got you.” You felt comfortable and safe with him, so you melted into his hug. 

“Harrison is showing off as a protective boyfriend, y’all.” Harry teased and the boys all laugh.

“What a tough boy.” Tuwaine tease. “I want a hug too, Hazzy. I’m scared.”

“Come on, just kiss already.” Tom teased and all the boys agreed.

“Hey, fuck off! She’s scared.” Harrison pressed her a little tighter on his chest and threw daggers with his eyes at the boys.

For the rest of the night, you were secured with him. The other movies weren’t so scaring with him holding you. When you were feeling afraid, you would grip on his hand tightly and he would distract you. And it was actually very comfortable. On the third movie, he spent the whole thing petting your hair and listening to some other jokes from the boys. And on the fourth movie, you lied your head on his shoulder and played with his hand.

By the time it was 4 am, you were starting to get a little sleepy. The boys were still hyped with Monster House -  lighter movie after a few very scary movies - but you were definitely fancying some sleep. Also, you were a little cold, so you sneaked off to the kitchen to make yourself some tea.

“Come on, Harrison. Go kiss her!” Tom whispered once you were off and Harrison rolled his eyes.

“Just leave us alone.”

“Haz, she’s so into you. The way she looks at you…” Tuwaine said and a small smile cracked on the blonde’s face.

“And you’ve been holding each other all night.” Sam finished.

“Just go ask her to stay the night with you.” Harry finished. Harrison suddenly had a wave of confidence hitting his body and he smiled widely.

“I’ll go after her.” He whispered and the boys silently cheered.

He found you in the kitchen, pouring hot tea in a cup. You smiled warmly to see him and made sure to pour another one for him because you knew he was a sucker for tea and wouldn’t deny some. He silently thanked for the tea and sat next to you.

“Thank you for making my night a little better, Haz.” You nudged him. “I’m very scared of horror movies and I’m thankful to have someone to help me feel a little better.”

“It’s nothing. I’ll always make you feel safe if I can.” He smiled warmly back. “Uhm, I like you, (Y/N). I like you a lot. And tonight’s been pretty amazing.”

“I like you too, Hazzy. A lot.” He put a stray of your hair behind your ear and licked his lips.

“C-can I kiss you?”

“Yes.” You smiled before feeling his lips against yours.

The kiss brought a little sweetness to this scary Halloween night. You were tired, but you were willing to stay awake until the sunrise just kissing him. It didn’t last long, but it was a perfect first kiss, and you felt like it wasn’t going to be the last of the night.

“Are you tired?” He asked, very close to your lips.

“A little, but… I don’t wanna go to sleep right now.”

“We can watch the rest of Monster House cuddled up on the couch and ditch them after the movie.” He suggested. “I really would love if you spent the night. I-If that’s not too much for you.”

“Of course! I would love to cuddle and watch the rest of the movie. And I’ll actually accept staying over because there’s no way I’m sleeping alone in my apartment after The Ring.” You laughed once again and kissed one more time before going back to the living room.

The boys all cheered loudly when they saw you two come back to the living room together and holding hands. You didn’t care, deciding to only sit on Harrison’s lap and rest your head on his chest. He left many kisses across your face, and even stole some from your lips. You did steal some back and you were enjoying it a lot. The boys did tease you a little more, but you didn’t care because you had each other.

And that was definitely the best night of sleep you had in your life. Harrison made you feel safe and feel loved, so you weren’t scared at all. He would always be there to hold you whenever you need it. He is your safe haven.
