Are Woodpeckers Evolving To Look Like Each Other? A New Study Says Yes

Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers are a classic case of confusing species. 

Both woodpeckers sport similar black-and-white plumages, males of both species don a red mark on the back of their heads, and the two species’ habitats and ranges overlap considerably.

But despite being look-alikes, these two species are not that closely related. Their genetic lineages split off from a shared ancestor over 6 million years ago—about as far back as chimps and humans split. The Hairy Woodpecker is more closely related to the very different looking Red-cockaded Woodpecker, while the Downy is closer to Nuttall’s Woodpecker.

A new study published in April in the journal Nature Communications provides strong evidence that Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers are an example of “plumage mimicry”—one species of bird evolving to match the plumage patterns and colors of another. And the researchers found more instances of woodpecker doppelgangers all around the world, including Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers that look like Great Spotted Woodpeckers in Europe; and Cardinal Woodpeckers that look like Gabon Woodpeckers in Africa...

Wtnv quick rundown - 35 - Lazy Day

The heat is unusually strong in NV today, making everyone feel lethargic and lazy, including Cecil himself. Others mentioned as going about listlessly include: Frances Donaldson (of the antiques mall), all reporters in town, Pamela Winchell (who can apparently create portals mid-air), people's entire bodies just giving up and causing them to die in the street and gravity itself which causes things/people to start floating.

The only one still feeling active is Carlos, who is mowing his whistling lawn, organising his closet and cleaning his gutters when he starts to float. How Cecil knows he's doing any of this is a mystery (or because of Cecil's special abilities~). It's possible that Carlos was unaffected due to not being from NV, but that's just my personal theory.

Intern Maureen makes Cecil aware that the sun is going out, he doesn't seem to have the energy/ability to really care though.

Eventually this laziness stops and everyone goes back to normal, including the dead people suddenly raising back up and being fine.

I make enough to get by and it takes all my time. If I had more time I could do more for myself and maybe for others. I could read and study and talk things over and find out about things. It takes time. I wish I had the time.” The people is a tragic and comic two-face: hero and hoodlum: phantom and gorilla twisting to moan with a gargoyle mouth: “They buy me and sell me . . . it's a game . . . sometime I'll break loose . . .” Once having marched Over the margins of animal necessity, Over the grim line of sheer subsistence Then man came To the deeper rituals of his bones, To the lights lighter than any bones, To the time for thinking things over, To the dance, the song, the story, Or the hours given over to dreaming, Once having so marched. The people is a polychrome, a spectrum and a prism held in a moving monolith, a console organ of changing themes, a clavilux of color poems wherein the sea offers fog and the fog moves off in rain and the labrador sunset shortens to a nocturne of clear stars serene over the shot spray of northern lights. The steel mill sky is alive. The fire breaks white and zigzag shot on a gun-metal gloaming. Man is a long time coming. Man will yet win. Brother may yet line up with brother: This old anvil laughs at many broken hammers. There are men who can't be bought. The fireborn are at home in fire. The stars make no noise. You can't hinder the wind from blowing. Time is a great teacher. Who can live without hope? In the darkness with a great bundle of grief the people march. In the night, and overhead a shovel of stars for keeps, the people march: “Where to? what next?”
