Something I don’t really see people talk about is the fact that the Charles Dance Phantom had a half sibling. Possibly the only Phantom who is officially not an only child. Gerard couldn’t marry Erik’s mother because he’d already gotten a girl pregnant and married her. There was somebody out there who legitimately had the ability to say that their brother was the Phantom of the Opera
In almost every form of POTO, I don’t ship it (and I think I’ll make a separate post explaining why)… however! The versions of Erik and Christine written by Arthur Kopit (the ones we see in the 1990 miniseries and the Maury Yeston musical) are an exception.
Kopit really strips the original story of many of POTO’s traits, and that isn’t necessarily bad. Erik never tries to deceive Christine into believing he’s a spirit, and Christine never sees him as a master she must obey. They form a very sweet friendship as he continues to teach her how to sing, which then blossoms into love, in different forms for the other.
That really covers Part 1 of the 1990 miniseries, and if you’ve seen it then you probably know why part 2 can be so frustrating to watch sometimes. It adds some odd elements, like Erik’s mother looking exactly and sounding like Christine, then everything with Erik’s father, and then of course, the unmasking scene.
What makes this unmasking scene so different than any form of The Phantom’s other unmaskings is that Christine asks Erik to take the mask off himself, which he does for her! He was willing to allow her to see the part he hated most about himself, to be incredibly vulnerable towards her. And then, after saying that love will allow her to look at his face, she faints at the sight of it.
I have a lot more to say about Kopit’s POTO, but I think I’ll have to talk about it another time. Sorry! Feel free to ask more me questions!
In the meantime, check out a game called “The Phantom of the Black Rose Revue”! It’s a POTO inspired game that also looks inspired by 70s manga, and The Phantom is a mysterious lady! I was so happy to find it when I did!
my favorite thing about the 1990 miniseries is that, in the original yeston & kopit production, the guards shoot erik and he's basically on the brink of death during the "you are my own" scene due to being oh you know shot in the chest, but they skip that in the cherik miniseries so when gerard goes down to the cellars for their little father/son bonding time, erik is just dying of ????? mystery ????
Hey everyone, my silly fanfic isn't over YET, and this is definitely NOT a hiatus. I just need to get back to work, you know, pay the bills and all that adulting stuff. I'll have another break in a few weeks, and then I can dive back into crafting the next chapters. Just a heads up, they're already written; I just need to make them, you know, make sense! Haha. Thanks for your patience! ♡( •ॢ◡-ॢ)✧˖° ♡
Another cute pic of my squad! Yes! I added new characters in my fanfic! hehe I like to see their faces.
