oh BABY you're in for a treat!!!

i have a whole google doc planned out for this thing, despite me having no animation experience gjgkhkh... this is gonna be the Public Lore Dump Post btw, and spoilers for all of rain code will be under the cut.

so the concept for this whole thing came about while watching the animations of youtuber OkayScreamingNow. super cool animation btw, their "psycho teddy" animation moderately blew up but i'm a huge fan of their "everybody likes you" video.

between watching those, a ton of aimkid videos, wince media's meat bun song, and nicktendo's mighty b review, i started feeling really nostalgic for mid-late 2000s animation, the stuff i grew up on. growing up creepie, yin yang yo, kenny the shark, all these were shows i adored as a kid. so, combined with my current rain code fixation, this little au came to be!

the general conceit of this au is that "Master Detective Archives" is a 2008 animated children's program that lasted for 20 episodes and is majority lost media. only a couple episodes exist in the bowels of shitty piracy sites, and even then those sites keep getting taken down. the more screenshots and concept art i make, the more is "revealed" about the show.

one of the things that interests me the most about children's media is how people worked around the censors. a lot of people are familiar with the story of the ren and stimpy adult party cartoon. for those who aren't familiar, when john "god's mistake" kricfalusi created an adult oriented reboot of ren and stimpy, the show was dogshit. with the new ability to rely on the crutch of whatever grossout sexual humor it wanted, it became a massive stain on john k's career (he has had other horrific stains both before and after apc, but i need to stress, no one liked apc).

for a more positive example, i love pretty much all of jhonen vasquez's work, but i find the humor and even some of the horror of invader zim to be more interesting than the same stuff in jthm, because iz was working under far stricter standards and practices.

what i'm trying to get at is that i enjoy the challenge of seeing how i can take concepts and make them more kid-friendly while still keeping the intrigue and interest the concepts originally had. i worked at a summer camp in 2022, and the driving force behind this little project was "keeping rain code camp-appropriate, but also keeping it interesting".

this ethos will hopefully explain some of the Big Changes i made to the story and characters. i do want to stress that i do not think i am improving on the original work. i think rain code is a story that, inherently, works better as an m-rated, gritty, cyberpunk-y murder mystery. i've just always been uniquely fascinated by this particular genre shift.

so, first major change: nocturnal detective agency has turned into nocturnal detective academy. this is a place where young minds, particularly those with supernatural powers, go to hone their craft. or at least... it was. now it's run exclusively by three people: headmaster Zange Eraser, school nurse and therapist Melami Goldmine, and teacher (and everything else) Yakou Furio.

i grew up with a book series called school of fear, which was about a small group of kids with severe phobias being sent to help conquer their fears at a highly rated school. however, it was actually just a kooky old lady and her massive mansion, and while she helped the kids get over their fears, she did it in unorthodox and occasionally darkly humorous ways. i remember a scene in the books where she put the claustrophobe and the kid afraid of death in a coffin for a few hours, and while that is absolutely NOT how exposure therapy works, the idea of a school that's just a few adults running a lowkey scam out of their house has always tickled my funny bone.

so the nda is a school, teaching detective skills and the like. of course, because yakou is my beautiful failwife, he mostly just sends his students out into the city of Kanai Ward to do their own investigative work and report back with what they've learned... as long as they don't get in trouble with Hecksmile or his goons, at least!

yeah, the other big change is that the peacekeepers are more like team rocket than corrupt cops. while i agree that the police suck, and a lot of older cartoons seem to share that sentiment (even some newer ones like gravity falls), having all the villains be evil, corrupt cops seems like a recipe to get s&p on your ass. so now, the cops just don't do anything, and Hecksmile and his goons just wreak havoc whenever they feel like it.

(i've already explained the hecksmile bit in a previous post, but i dont think any of the other names would need changing. maybe if this was the 90s, desuhiko and fubuki would get their names changed to something more eurocentric, but this isn't the 90s and that stuff was cringe even back then.)

there are only seven students at the academy, and i've de-aged these characters to be more relatable to the target audience: our main character yuma, halara, desuhiko, fubuki, vivia, pucci, and aphex. i'll detail them a bit here, because yakou, zange, and melami can all stay pretty similar (actually, melami doesn't randomly feel up strangers to get their clothing measurements anymore, but that's a pretty minor change).

yuma is still our main character, acting as the straight man and audience surrogate. the whole "number one" twist isn't really a thing with how this whole plot is set up, so his awkward and generally "scrunkly" attitude from the game is his natural state here. though none of the ages of the characters are specified, he's often called out as the youngest detective, probably in his preteens or early teenagehood. his coalescence is used for a lot of teamwork-based solutions to problems, but he isn't that great at actual mystery-solving.

this is where shinigami comes in! in the first episode, after some hijinks, yuma accidentally summons a death god. fortunately, he summons a teenage death god. she can only appear in her cool human form in her summoner's dreams, she can't interact with anyone in the physical world except her summoner, and she doesn't even have her reaper's license yet! regardless, she likes having a friend, so she helps yuma see things from different perspectives. i figured death spirits wouldn't be off the table, exactly (i mean, look at billy and mandy), but i think there's a certain humor in a death god not being able to do any soul reaping. i like to think she talks about it like her driver's license. "ugh, i'm not allowed to reap any souls until i'm 16 thousand years old! i'm only 14 thousand!!!" because of her teenagerdom, her human form is going to be far less sexualized. also because i think her canon outfit is a little ugly.

halara doesn't change much from canon. very mysterious and intimidating. no one knows their gender because everyone's too afraid to ask (and to find out, you'd have to pay them about $100 in cash). they still love cats but have an allergy to them, they still don't trust people, etc.

desuhiko changes a lot from canon. he's less actively creepy and more of a wannabe romantic. he has a tendency to fall for grown women, although he has absolutely no chance with any of them. this is played for laughs.

fubuki is another character who doesn't change much from canon. obscenely rich and super out of touch with everything around her. has occasional bursts of intelligence for comedy.

vivia is still everyone's favorite emo sadboy, writing poetry in the fireplace. his passive suicidal ideation, though interesting to explore in media made for adults, is very dangerous to put in a children's show, so we're nixing that. instead, he's just real sleepy and goth. he's also the least interested in doing actual detective work, so when he and yuma are investigating together, it gives yuma a chance to take the lead.

pucci doesn't change much from canon, but admittedly, we don't know too much about her. she's sensitive to noise, very thoughtful and introspective, but very awkward around people being nice to her.

and aphex. what to say about aphex. i don't like aphex for a number of reasons (anyone who played with jpn audio can back me up on this one), but the idea of someone who is initially violent and cruel becoming your (still somewhat violent and cruel) ally is a fun character trope to me. my go-to example is buford from phineas and ferb, and i think that's the role aphex would play. initially a threat, but eventually becomes softer and more well-developed. well, if the show got more seasons.

and that's our main cast! i could talk about kurumi, makoto, and martina, as i have a lot of cool ideas for them, but i have been writing this for like an hour and i think i need to chill ahaha... ty for the ask!!!

The evolution of Ophelia Addams (2)

Ophelia truly “started” for the 60s sitcom “The Addams Family”, that basically invented her from scratch. But she wasn’t yet “Ophelia Addams” - rather she was Ophelia Frump, older sister of Morticia (née Frump). And to highlight their sisterhood, their Yin-Yang relationship, Ophelia was played by none other than Carolyn Jones herself! 

Ophelia was designed to be the complete opposite of Morticia. She is a “flower girl”, but not just in the hippie sense: she is a literal flower girl. Obsessed with flowers, always with a bouquet in her arms, she even has flowers on her head: a crown of daisies, or blooming flowers slipped in her hair. She is blond, and always dress in bright white. She is a happy and smiling woman that plays the harp gently ; always ready to laugh she is also an excellent cook of “traditional” (aka normal human) food. She doesn’t even like poisonous plants like henbane or nightshades, and scoffs at the sight of thorns: rather she only cares for buttercups, daisies and fresh weeds (she concedes that weeds are the most beautiful flowers in her eyes). 

While this latter puts her as the “white sheep” of the Addams clan, originally it rather made her Granny Frump’s favorite daughter, much more preferred over the more “bizarre” and “uninteresting” Morticia. In fact, as we discover in the television series, originally Gomez was destined to marry Ophelia. It was an arranged marriage between Gomez’s mother and Granny Frump, and the old Granny couldn’t see a better bride than Ophelia. But Gomez rather liked the carnivorous plants, beheaded dolls and gothic charm of Morticia, which who he rather fell in love (and anyway he couldn’t stand Ophelia - plus he is allergic to flowers). 

Mind you, despite her not fitting the morbid aesthetic of the Addamses, and her mother prefering her flowers over Morticia’s fried eyes of newt, Ophelia stays a Frump (aka almost-Addams), and thus a very bizarre, unusual, “kooky” character. Ophelia is weird and extravagant, but just in a different way than Morticia. Take the flowers on her head for example: they are not just placed there for looking good. They actually grow there! Her hair roots are the flowers’ roots, and when you pull one, she lifts her leg! Ophelia is also noted to be “athletic”, but by athletic understand extremely strong and unusually violent. She breaks dishes trying to wash them, when she wants someone to do something for her she literaly twists their arm, when she plays violin too passionately she ends up SAWING IT IN HALF with the bow... And she is also an expert at karate and judo. So much that she actually judo-flips most of the men she interacts with, either as a form of salutation, or in hope that it could solve whatever problem they have. 

She can also sing quite well... but in the most bizarre ways. For example, she can sing a three-part harmony... all on her own. And produce a whole opera chorus with just her throat. Even singing different tones at the same time with the same voice! 

Ophelia was named after the Shakespearian character of Ophelia, from “Hamlet”, THE Ophelia. Of course, the character had to be made of nods and references to the original namesake. On top of the flower obsession, while not exactly crazy, Ophelia is not always... “all-there”. She is both an emotive and superficial girl, a ditzy, scatter-brained girl, fickle and air-headed at the same time. She is the kind of girl that offers to play a game of hide-and-seek, but then tells people where she wants them to hide. She often says out-loud her thoughts or the things she expects people to say, and then sincerely believes they said it : she can have entires one-sided conversations. And, another big nod to Shakespeare, Ophelia is also obsessed with water. She cannot resist the attraction and beauty of a body of water, be it a lake, a puddle or a tub: she always has to jump in it. In fact, her mother says that if she likes to cook so much, it is because she wants to clean a lot of dishes: it gives her an opportunity to stay for a long time in presence of a sink filled with water. 

 The other thing Ophelia is known for is her rocky, unsteady love-life. She is a romantic roller-coaster, and the very opposite of Morticia who has a stable, faithful, passionate relationship with her only soulmate. In the first half of the series, Ophelia is seen as the one being fickle when it comes to love : while getting extremely pushy and excited about her arranged wedding with Gomez, she actually admits he has a lot of flaws she dislikes and the minute he says he is “unworthy” of her she completely agrees and elopes with Cousin Itt, her “knight in shining armor” (though it turns out to be a summer romance). A similar case happens later with her new fiancé, Horatio Bartholomew. He is a perfect man; dignified, beautiful, educated, a true gentleman AND the second richest man in the world. At first she head over heels for him and extremely displeased over the fact her mother dislikes him... but the moment she learns he hates yoga, she immediately ditches him and considers him “unworthy” of her love.

But then, in a latter half of the series, the tide turns and instead of her throwing men away, it is her that gets constantly jilted. She ends up abandoned by lovers and boyfriends as many as seven times a year, and while she still is a manic, over-enthusiastic, hyper-happy girl half of the time, the other half she becomes a crying, desperate wreck wailing about her misery and loneliness - and she can easily switches between the two moods on a whim. Ultimately however, she manages to get out of her tumultuous heart troubles by starting a career as an opera singer, thanks to her most unusual voice.

Anyways, it got me wondering how something like that would be mythologized in SC, what the theological or superstitious explanations would be - or who'd pointedly ignore it for being inconvenient to doctrine

ooooooOOOOOOOOOH. So first of all: that’s dope I love space. Thank you for bringing it to my attention :D

I’ll come at this first of all from the perspective of our own de facto chief priestess of the rebellion (Lux), who with her mix of Ashtivan and Cosmonist (and Atennui by marriage) influences would probably see it as a reminder that creation is inherent in destruction and vice versa. Ashtivan thought tended to see their versions of the Cosmic Lovers (Orellistia and Levinoxia, called Sungtivsish and Nàntivesh in their languages) as more of a yin-yang, inseparable and interwoven, and they also thought of Levinoxia as a Mother rather than a maiden, so I imagine they’d be likely to mythologize new stars born in the wake of a black hole as her children, to be adopted into the shared colony by Orellistia and the rest of the goddesses.

The school of Cosmonism most likely to deny this outright is hard-line Hyperian-era Licentiati doctrine, which IS heavily invested in a matter/void duality. I could see local independent Destigravitationist leaders portraying it as a miraculous triumph of one over the other, even taking personal credit for it, but the Licentiati and the Empress are understood as regarding them as all a little kooky. They support the regime so the Licentiati have to put up with them but every time a destgravitationist reports some weird thing she saw en route to her third faith healing session in Ovaiakon as a miracle/sign of impending cataclysm they sigh heavily and draft another mass letter to local temples about the importance of religious unity (which is always code for “get with the program”).

Old-time pre-Hyperian popular Cosmonism was less of a monolith because unlike the Ashtivans its various groups weren’t (aren’t) in communication with one another so they don’t develop these broad popular consenses (is that a word? “Consensuses” can’t be it) but I immediately imagine them devising something VERY cute out of the common scriptural folklore that Luca, the goddess of light, is Levinoxia’s favorite daughter who she’s constantly doting on and spoiling and being a pushover for. “Can we get a star here sennami please 🥺 ???” “Oh…alright…💕” Before the Praeceptorate had as much means for mass communication with their faithful, mythological concepts of the goddesses tended to be very humanizing and often funny, especially among spacefarers’ traditions—sort of like how medieval miracle plays had comedic tropes about Mary and Joseph or different saints that they’d often come back to.

So that’s an inexhaustive list of Cosmonist/Cosmonist-adjacent interpretations off the top of my head. There would probably be many more tbh!

How I am: I'd say I appear to be super shy till you get to know me, then I'll be cracking jokes all day, dancing and showing you music and movies I like.

I definitely have an issue with boundaries and it's something I'm currently working on so I can have healthier connections to people, I struggle a lot with putting myself first.

I don't like arguing, or loud screaming. I like to take life slow, see the sunrise and the sunset everyday. I fear describing myself a little because I don't want to seem like I'm throwing roses at myself for some reason

I get hurt easily but I hide it and only those who know me well, know when something has hurt me. I tend to deal with pain alone and with time I've become central to help my family deal with the hard stuff.

I'm stubborn especially when I'm behind a goal I want to accomplish, I always have to keep in mind I can be more flexible.

Hobbies: I'm not sure if going to the beach everyday is a hobbie, but it brings me tons of peace so I'll say that and watching movies is one of my hobbies. I'm also into astrology so I spend a good amount of time doing charts and reading about zodiac and mystical stuff

Personality: well..I'm a leo sun, Libra moon and Capricorn rising. I like things to be done well when it comes to work but outside of that I'm happy just sitting down and winding down tbh. I am a hopeless romantic who hides behind and says romance isn't such a big thing, but my heart will melt if someone gives me roses.

Grief and Gratitude - Moxie On Monday

Several months ago, I was scrolling through Instagram and came across an account with the most beautifully poetic and profound messages. I discovered the writing of Vex King. He’s like a younger male version of Oprah - deeply

spiritual - an old soul who’s overcome a great deal of pain and loss in his young life that has evolved into immense wisdom. In one of his recent newsletters, he shared a message sent to him by one of his readers. To paraphrase, this young man was feeling saddened by the age or stage he was at in life. At this point in time, he hadn’t realized certain expectations he had for himself and his life. I’m sensing many of us can relate to having expectations for our life when our lives didn’t seem to get the memo. Life deviated from the path we had planned out for ourselves. The expectation we had for our lives didn't match up to the life we're living. One thing about Vex King, he takes these interactions to heart. His response to this young man was deeply profound. He began to talk about the connection between Grief and Gratitude or the pain we feel when we lose something, including those expectations we have for ourselves that have not yet manifested in our lives. The loss we feel oftentimes comes in the form of sadness and grief. Yet, there are always two sides to every coin, one light, one dark - one yin, one yang. One of gratitude and one of grief. In my research on people who have come to the end of their lives, there is one shocking commonality. The end of a human’s life tends to refocus one’s energies. The focus is rarely on grief or loss - or on anything negative at all. Their focus is almost always on gratitude - on seeing the blessings in life. As kooky humans, we tend to go through life with a set of expectations for our lives. Many of these expectations come from outside of us - from our parents, our friends, our teachers, our loved ones and, oftentimes, most of all, from society. When we turn 16, we should be driving. When we’re 18, we must register to vote. When we turn 21, there’s pressure to begin drinking. (OK, OK, that pressure comes wayyyy before then!) By the time we’re in our late twenties to early thirties, we should be married. By our early to mid thirties, we should be getting ready to raise a family. Many of us would have moved to the suburbs, begun nesting, have a fur baby and the requisite 2.2 kids. And, on and on, it goes. Why? Because society says so. The thing is, who the heck is society? The other thing is, society is forever changing. So, how on earth can our lives continually adapt to a society with ever changing expectations and demands? The answer is … we can’t! We must be our own compass. Our internal compass is all we need. The interaction between Vex King and his reader was an interesting one. On the one hand, Vex validated his reader. He acknowledged the man’s feelings and his grief, his loss, and his pain. On the other hand, he helped the man to see the other side of the coin and to see his blessings. He guided him toward gratitude as he helped him to understand that these two emotions can exist at the same time. Here’s the thing about grief - and loss, and pain. Inevitably, us kooky humans move through the pain into gratitude. Gratitude helps us to deal with the pain and the loss. Gratitude helps us to see what we’ve lost in a new light. Now, back to humans who are in the last stage of life. The irony is that these humans are oftentimes the happiest. They don’t have time for the crap. They don’t worry about unmet expectations. They move into gratitude. They surround themselves with their loved ones. They focus on the blessings of their lives. They focus on love and light and life. They focus on what they have done and what they’ve experienced. And, on what they’ve learned. If you’ve ever read the book, Tuesdays With Morrie, you know the central story of the book focuses on the incredible wisdom that tends to crystallize as we get older. We begin to see life through a very different lens. Our priorities change dramatically. In our western culture, we have yet to revere age and to see it as a powerful vehicle for wisdom. Age is a blessing. The longer we live, the more opportunities we have to grow. The more we bloom and grow on the inside, the more we’re able to be in a space of gratitude for everything in our lives - including the pain, the grief and the loss - as those are the times we tend to grow the most. It’s natural to feel sadness at certain points in our lives if we haven’t “checked all those societal boxes.” For me, that looks like a woman who’s 61 and divorced now for over 15 years. No, I’m not remarried. Society says I should have remarried long ago. No, I don’t own my own home any longer and society says I should. Society also says I should be retired. I say that I love being rewired rather than retired. I also love doing things my way. I kicked those societal boxes to the curb long ago. Fortunately, I’ve been on this inside out path for a very long time. Society’s boxes mean very little to me as do outward pressures and expectations. The pressure I feel now comes from the inside. As Brene Brown says it so eloquently (I’m paraphrasing here!), it’s this urgency we feel in the “middleness” of life to “get on with it. And, to stop fucking around! Kooky humans tend to fuck around. A lot! Older, wiser humans tend to do less fucking around. They tend to move from grief to gratitude more easily and with more grace. If you’re feeling the pressure of societal expectations, or feeling sadness or pain that you haven’t achieved certain things, or checked off certain boxes at this age or stage in your life, perhaps it’s time to take a step back. Perhaps, it’s time to see your life and your accomplishments through a new lens - one that’s far rosier - one that’s filled with gratitude for who you are and who you have become. After all, when it comes to the end of our lives, I can guarantee society won’t be holding your hand and telling you that they love you. Society won’t come to your door to see what boxes you have checked off. The only thing that will matter to you are the people you love and the ones who love you. Most likely, it will be those beautiful, kooky humans, the ones who matter most who will be with you til the end. Beauties, what matters most is what’s inside of you! All that matters is how much you loved and how much you were loved. That’s it. That’s all. Remember, societal boxes don’t love. Only, kooky humans do! MERLIN MERILL is seventy-five years old. He is the humanized version of Merlin from the Disney film, Sword in the Stone. He is portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen and is an NPC.    

ABOUT MR MERILL

If Madam Mim is the yin of Redwood Hollow’s resident oldies, it only serves that Merlin Merill is the yang. While Mim herself is all about the mystery and the drama, Merlin values logic and education above all else. Sure, he might be just as eccentric as Mim, and make just about as much sense, but his heart is in the right place, and he is certainly old enough to know what he’s talking about, even if no one else does (and Madam disagrees).

Merlin, or as the townsfolk exclusively know him as, Mr Merill, has been a resident of Redwood Hollow since he was a boy, raised in one of the oldest cottages in the entire town. The house itself is rumoured to have been one of the first built when the town was re-established, and has been under the care of Merill family for centuries as a result, though it has gone through a fair few renovations since the walls were first built. The young Merlin always had an affinity for science, and could often be found out in the woods testing out weird physics theories he read in an outdated book, or bubbling up some chemistry project in the kitchen.

The passion never left him, and so it only seemed right that Merlin would become a man of science and education, first studying in the halls of Redwood College and later graduating from a number of top tier universities globally as he added letters to his name and degrees to his belt. He was well travelled, and extremely well-educated, but it only seemed fair that he would return to the place he once knew and bestow that knowledge upon the town of Redwood Hollow itself.

Now known as Mr. Merill, the kooky old fellow began his life as a teacher at Hollow High, and swiftly graduated to a top paying position on the staff at Redwood College as a physics professor. His passion for the job eventually led him on the path to becoming one of the College Deans, a position that he held for many years until his retirement at the ripe old age of sixty-six. He is well versed in the town’s rich history, and knows much about the people who live here, thanks in part to this position (and partly because he’s a nosey old bugger.) He likes to think himself a great advice giver and problem solver because of it, though you’d be lucky if he makes any sense when he offers.

It happened that this is where he met the Marvelous Madam Mim, and the pair have bickering about their opposing opinions of the education system, the occult and science at large ever since. They find one another insufferable, but somehow they get roped into working together as some weirdly unofficial town elders sort of deal. He avoids Mim’s ridiculous fortune telling at Halloween, but they have both firmly kept up the tradition of The Chest of Hope in the springtime. For ‘educational purposes’, says Merlin. ‘For the fun!’ says Mim.

An unpopular opinion: season 4 was good. :O i feel like i hear the sentiment from quite a few people that season 4 on the whole was bad. i love all the seasons equally actually.

Pairing I am not a fan of: i think i’m willing to at least entertain most any ship. i’ve read some interesting things for sure. i draw the line at seth/pickles though (i’m glad that doesn’t really seem to exist anymore? it was around more back in the day).

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): aside from magnus and abigail, who both needed WAY more screen time?? i would say dr rockso in a sense. he was sort of that kooky rascal you wave your finger at when he gets in trouble, and then they had to go and do the whole dory mclean thing. and i get the point of the episode, but after that i wasn’t rooting for rockso anymore and he kinda became more of this sinister kinda figure? i dunno. i think that whole angle could’ve been done away with and it would’ve been a lot better. also him trying to fucking drown toki in the christmas episode. 8( ouch, man.

Favourite Friendship: probably nathan and pickles, since they’re the lynchpin of the whole outfit.

When I started shipping them: WELL....okay so i actually just went back and looked at my old deviantart account and the first drawing i did of them (yes i’m linking to 14-year-old art pls don’t judge me) was on Oct. 18, 2006, so like...the dethfam episode hadn’t even aired yet. god damn. there was someone in the sausage festival livejournal community who had drawn the two of them, and then i fucking went ravenous for it real quick and it became like the only thing i drew for months hahaha. i had been nickles up until then. :O

My thoughts: MY THOUGHTS??? this is so vague. i have many thoughts. uh, for one? they’re perfect together? the straight-laced workaholic and the lazy degenerate? yes please, gimme. they’re like yin and yang, opposites attracting. and yet i feel like, once they get past that, they realize they’re both so similar at their cores. and pickles helps charles loosen up, and charles gives pickles some structure. they both give each other someone to lean on when shit gets bad. pickles can be a surprisingly good caretaker when he wants to be. :’)

What makes me happy about them: everything?? i really don’t know how to adequately describe just how much i love them and just how much that means hahah... you ever ship something for 14 years?? i know some of y’all have. it gets in your blood. that’s like over a third of my life right there. not to be dramatic or anything hahaha but they’re important to me. that ship helped get me through some rough months back when i lived alone in a crappy apartment, and it’s hilarious to me that i’m getting back into it hardcore like i was back then considering everything that’s going on right now, just current events-wise and personal stuff-wise.

What makes me sad about them: god damn, anything about those 9 months charles spent “dead”. anything post-doomstar. anything snakes ‘n barrels where they’re together for a short time and then never see each other until charles becomes dethklok’s manager. pickles pining after him for like a decade after the band forms. or charles pining, having to watch pickles party and do drunks and sleep around. or BOTH of them pining and not realizing it, or REALIZING IT and not acting on it because what if it hurt the band somehow? maybe charles wouldn’t want to jeopardize it but pickles would be okay with it, and charles would have to be the one to say no. ahhhhhhhHHHHHH

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: oof, i agree with you here, Ash. i’ve read a couple fics where, like, the bdsm aspect wasn’t even fun. i probably know the exact fic that left a bad taste in your mouth because there’s one specific one i’m thinking of that left a bad taste in mine (actually two...). like i had to actually get up from the computer and go do dishes hahah... uck. but yeah. don’t like charles being abusive to pickles. i think pickles does like some punishment from time to time, and he definitely has some daddy issues. but i don’t want it to get fucking sinister haha y’know? pickles, at his heart, is a good-times guy. he likes good feelings. he wants to feel nice. and charles, at HIS heart, is all about service.

Things I look for in fanfic: are they in love or just hooking up?? i mean i’ll take either at the end of the day, but i’m a romantic and i need the love, i crave it.

My wishlist: give to me all the fics about snakes n’ barrels chickles. how i haven’t written one baffles me (though i did have that huge plot write-up from months back haha...i should turn that into a real fic sometime). would also love a huge fic about their marriage, complete with canon-typical buffoonery. fics about them retiring together. ;0; fics about them just having nice peaceful moments. literally just.....any fic haha...

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: my soul literally begins to shatter apart if i consider them ultimately ending up with anyone else hahaha... other relationships can come and go, but at the end of the line i need those boys to be together. <3

My happily ever after for them: after galaktikon II, dethklok has kinda run its course. the band uses their near-infinite resources to help rebuild the earth. shortly after, it’s pickles who proposes in a surprising turn of events. shaken after the battle, he doesn’t wanna waste any more time. they get married barefoot on the beach probably in like fiji or something (pickles’ idea) with friends and family present (the okay ones haha, also magnus is there with toki because this is my dream, damnit). pickles has white flowers in his dreads in lieu of a bouquet. T~T everything goes well, no one crashes the wedding. they have a lovely honeymoon there when everyone else leaves. pickles says he’s decided to retire from music, but it’s not long before he’s working feverishly on new music in the home studio at their new place. some real expansive stuff. he’s kinda doing it as a weird therapy, coming to terms with some stuff. he never gets clean but he’s not using drugs and alcohol as a band-aid for his problems quite so much anymore. charles retires from managing bands (he doesn’t have the heart for it if it’s not dethklok) and ends up doing the adjunct professor thing whenever he gets bored. but he practices guitar a lot, pickles teaching him some advanced stuff, they jam together sometimes. he takes up sailing because it’s something he’s always wanted to do but never had time for. after pickles releases his first solo album, charles takes him on a long, romantic sailing trip. everything is perfect, everything’s gonna be good forever. 8′) forever. the end.

my “coming to Zutara” story

I knew when I started watching A;TLA that Zuko and Katara didn’t end up together, because my besty got me into the show by making me watch the s3 series finale. Excerpt of that conversation:

him: ur really gonna like this show. watch it with me plz me: Nah. The eyeballs on that protagonist are way too round and cutesy. Is he riding a giant dustmop? I am an adult. Hard pass. him: no really, it’s such a good show, the bending is based on real martial arts styles *goes on about it* me: Meh. This is a lot more whimsy than I’m willing to embrace for the sake of our friendship. Too silly. Not doing it. him: OH YEAH WATCH THIS

And then it happened. 

The epic fight scenes of those last episodes caught my attention (as did shirtless Ozai whooo) and even though there was a weird, unexplained moment at the end where the cool waterbender kissed the kid hero, I was sold. Besty convinced me to watch more. We watched the bloodbending episode and the Ember Island Players episode, and even though I didn’t have a lot of context for the jokes, I loved how excited Toph was about her depiction. I loved how unhappy all the others were about theirs, and how much nuance of character and world that conveyed. 

It took me a few years to get around to watching the earlier seasons, so when I finally saw the first episodes, I was so confused. Who is that shouting kid with the ponytail? Why is Sokka being such a jerk to his sister? Haha, Iroh is adorable and kooky! Wow, Katara did so much for the resistance! Blue Spirit whaaaat? o so that’s how he got the scar

If it had just been the waterbending scroll episode, Zutara wouldn’t have held traction for me. Not the way it has. But then s1 ended with that incredible fight at the north pole. And suddenly this other, kind of hidden arc became apparent. in the first episode of the season, Zuko stepped off his ship with all the power and Katara stood on the ice with none at all. By the end of that season, Katara had claimed her power, had fought hard to get it, and she and Zuko were matched.

From that moment on, Zuko and Katara were pitted against each other in my mind. They had this symmetry, reflected by all the Yin Yang imagery throughout that sequence, and I was amazed that despite the vast difference between their upbringings, they were somehow still both so intensely driven by hope and love. They had this kindred spirit that would obviously draw them together if they would just talk through their problems.

Which totally happened in Crossroads of Destiny! They connected, they had a moment, they each saw their own pain mirrored in the other and they got it. I was disappointed that Zuko chose to regress rather than join Team Avatar then, but it also made so much sense. Hope, right? As long as there was hope that he could reconcile with his family, he had to pursue it. But that didn’t negate the connection he had forged with Katara.

Watching s3 again after so long, I recognized the richness that had built up in the series, how every character had undergone some kind of transformation and growth. There were still kiddish gags, but the content had matured. The music had matured. The kids had gotten tougher and stronger and more complete within themselves. And even though I had seen a good part of s3 before and I knew how it ended, I kept expecting Katara and Zuko to share some romantic moment after their reconciliation. I knew it wasn’t going to happen but I was still waiting for it, because it would have satisfied my need to see their threads come to the same symmetrical resolution. Both of them powerful, upstanding heroes. Both of them celebrated and respected, continuing to work hard to improve their world...

(I promised I wouldn’t go into the INSTEAD portion of this story. i.e. INSTEAD the cool waterbender kissed the kid hero. INSTEAD Katara drops her power like its hot and winds up a healer/homemaker at the South Pole... Bahhh)

So then fanfiction happened. Like, a lot of it. I read so many stories but i couldn’t find the one I wanted. Because what I wanted was specific. A story with hidden identities and political intrigue but also action and sexual tension that actually culminated in smut - but most especially I wanted Zuko and Katara to stay true to character, come through it on equal footing, and arrive at a balanced partnership. I wanted the symmetry that the show promised me.

The moral of the story, I guess, is that a good show, a really good show, can never truly be spoiled with spoilers. Surprises are just tricks, they’re only really interesting for the second it takes to come to terms with them. It’s the steady inevitable path that a story travels that makes it great - the story it awakens inside you - and knowing where things are headed doesn’t necessarily mean you might as well read the cliffnotes. 

Speaking of... TL;DR - this one time my besty ruined Avatar for me but I forgave him bcs it’s actually a complex and compelling story, and it really wasn’t about Ozai’s chest at all anyway.
