Me constantly wishing that there was a volume of Yokaiden for over 4 months now :)
No, I am serious, I wish there was a volume 3. And am questioning if the rest is like...up to the reader's interpretation or if there is already a full plot for it.
I already miss it :(

HELP US GET RID OF HUGE 20 YEARS OLD MANGA COLLECTION 📚✨
Tumblr media
My sister used to collect a whole bunch of manga in the mid 2000s to mid 2010s, but nowadays she's lost her attachments to them and wants to open up a lot of space (for more manga, incidentally 🤭) so I'm helping her sell off all of the bulk! 📚✨
I've set up a temporary eBay account where I'll be listing all of the series she would like to sell off which you can find here: https://www.ebay.com/usr/littlebookghost
Her collection mainly consisted of shoujo romance, light fantasy/supernatural, and boys love titles- with many out of print titles by Tokyopop and Del Ray Manga, and she had over 100 different series/oneshots in her collection! Due to the large amount of books to list I will be adding them gradually every weekend until I have all of them up!
We'd really like to have the whole collection gone by the end of the year, so please share with anyone you think would be interested in buying them off us, we'd be super grateful! 💖

Yokaiden V1 Review
Tumblr media
Yokaiden by Nina Matsumoto is a ... page paranormal/mythical manga series. I've tried hunting down other volumes but I've been unsuccessful as of yet.
Hamachi wants to be friends with the yokai, Japanese spirits. Most think of them as horrible monsters to be destroyed at all costs, but he believes they only cause the occasional mischief and could peacefully live along side humans if given the chance. When his grandmother dies mysteriously, Hamachi ventures into the yokai realm in search of the murderer. He meets many yokai on his travels, but will he find the killer? Or will he be lost forever?
I rate this volume 5/5 stars.
I know I've read this book before, many years ago, but if forgotten all of it. It actually landed on my unhaul pile, because it didn't stick with me. I thought I'd give it a reread, and it so much better than I remember!
The art style is adorable. The notes on yokai between each chapter are very interesting. It full of humor and suspense.
Hamachi is a firm character, who knows his beliefs but also isn't afraid to adjust them when needed.
There are only 2 volumes in this series, so I'll be sure to read the rest fairly soon, when I get my hands on it.

An urban fantasy oneshot by me
It all began on the first day of spring break, when I was heading home from junior high school on my usual route. Said route happens to go by this old alleyway where, normally, nothing happens.
However, as I neared the alley, I stopped, hearing some sort of commotion coming from within.
Curious, I peeked around the corner and saw these three guys whom I didn’t recognize from being anywhere in my classes. They were taking turns kicking around a small duffel bag.
That bag, I noticed, was squirming. That was not a good sign.
If I had known what I was going to be involved in, I would have just walked away, but my heroic instincts kicked into high gear. I just knew I had to save whatever poor animal was in there.
I ran forward into the alley, shouting “HEY! What do you think you’re doing?!”
As soon as they saw me, they ran, leaving the bag behind. They said things like “God, a human!”, and “Don’t let it get you! Run!”, which I thought was weird, but I didn’t give it much thought. Saving the kitten or puppy or whatever was my first priority.
When they were gone, I went over to the bag and picked it up. It was still moving around.
And that’s when I heard the gravely but unmistakably female voice from inside. “Hey, put me down! Haven’t you punks tormented me enough?!”
Letting out a startled yell, I dropped the bag, which landed with a pained grunt. “OW! Watch it, you jerks!”
“No, no, it’s fine! They’re gone. You don’t have to worry about-” My mind did a 180 when I realized that whatever or whoever I was talking to, it - or she - obviously wasn’t human. “Oh dear god, stoptalkingtoit...”
“What? What was that?” The bag started thrashing around again. “Let me out of here!”
I kind of pitied her, due to how those guys were treating her before, but that duffel bag was still too small to hold an entire human being. “Uh... I don’t know, I don’t think I can trust a talking... whatever you are...”
“Do you know what ‘suffocation’ means?! You know what happens when a plastic bag gets over your head?! Kiss your precious O2 goodbye, kid! I’m gonna DIE in here!”
“Calm down, calm down.” I said, wanting to free her, but at the same time afraid of what I might see once I opened the bag. “You’re not gonna die. Maybe if I just drop you off at the nearest police station...”
“You’ll do no such thing!”
“Yeah, you’re right.” I rubbed the back of my head. “You’d probably get dissected.” I looked around. “Still, those guys might come back for you, so...”
“You’re a human, right? Those brainless lowlifes think they’re so tough, but they want nothing to do with humans.” The voice from the bag sounded calmer.
“Y-You mean...” The ruffians’ earlier words suddenly made more sense now. “...those guys weren’t human?”
“Of course not!”
A chill went down my spine. “Uh, okay, this is too much for me...” I started to back away. “I’ll just be going now. Nice meeting you, nameless damsel in distress.”
“I have a name!” The bag hopped blindly towards me, and I jumped. “And the only reason I’m in distress is because I can’t fight that well in a bag.”
“W-Well, the truth is...” I stammered nervously. “I’m not exactly the warrior type at all. I only chased those thugs away because I thought you were some poor animal or something. I didn’t even know there was some weird nonhuman going-ons here.”
“Oh, boo-hoo.” She replied sarcastically. “Y’know what? Just go. I’d rather take my chances alone than put up with you.”
“Okay, okay.” I turned to leave, but something stopped me. I looked over my shoulder to see the still moving bag, the being within grumbling and obviously trying her hardest to open the zipper from inside, which was probably a bad idea from the get-go. My conscience got the better of me then.
“Aw, this is pathetic!” I exclaimed after a few awkward minutes. Walking back over to the bag, I grabbed the zipper and pulled it open. “There, you’re free now. I don’t even care anymore...” My voice died in my throat as I finally got a good look at her.
“Aw yeah, sweet freedom!” She said, though her gruff voice didn’t match her appearance at all. In fact, I’d say that she actually looked... pretty.
She looked human enough, save for her small size and her pointed ears. Her black hair was up in two buns, and she wore a long green dress with the kind of sleeves that extend way past the hands (I think those are called water sleeves). She looked up at me with two reddish eyes. I could only stare.
Finally, I found myself uttering “What even are you...?”
She cocked an eyebrow. “What, haven’t you heard of a goddess of magic before?”
Her statement caught me totally off-guard. “A... a goddess?”
“That’s right, kid.” The miniature woman replied. “And don’t you dare make one crack about my size, unless you wanna spend the rest of your short life as a slug.”
“No, I don’t.” I said, nearly overwhelmed at the fact that I had just saved an actual goddess. “You say you’re a goddess of magic? That’s real too?”
“Of course magic is real!” The goddess responded, clearly annoyed. “If you want a cheap imitation, go to a talent show.”
I almost fainted. This was all happening so fast. I went over the facts in my mind: three thugs who weren’t even human, a goddess the size of a doll, and now real magic? “That’s it.”
“What?”
“I’m dreaming. None of this can be real. But, y’know, I remember going to bed, waking up, school...”
“Kid,” The goddess in green interrupted. “Come closer a bit.”
“O-Okay.” I complied, leaning down to her. As soon as I was close enough, she said “That’s it.” and pinched my cheek. Hard.
“OW!” I shot up, holding my cheek in my hand. The goddess then spoke up. “If this were a dream, would that hurt?”
“Oh my god...” I gasped. “This is for real.”
“Yeah.” she remarked. “Get used to it.”
“Hold on, I need a moment...” I sat down, my face in my hands, feeling so small all of a sudden. To think my entire life had been leading up to this. I was either blessed... or cursed.
“You done?” I heard the small goddess ask.
“Almost.” I answered.
I lay down on the concrete, staring up at the blue sky. If there actually were gods and magic in the world, what else existed? Fairies? Yokai? My mind was filled with so many questions.
What was my life...?
“Hey.” The goddess leaned into my view. “Get up.”
“Wha...?” I blinked.
“You’re gonna get sick lying down like that.” She said. “GET UP.”
“Okay, okay!” I sat up, and scrambled to my feet. “Well, uh... listen, it’s been fun, but I really need to get home. Like I said, nice meeting you...”
I jumped when she advanced towards me. “Hold it! You’re not going anywhere without me.”
“Wha-Why?!” I exclaimed. “Don’t you you have a shrine somewhere to go home to?”
What she said next was just one more surprise. “Nope. Never had one.”
“Huh?”
She folded her arms. “I’m a lesser deity. I’m not even a true immortal. Over 700 years, and I never get any credit, not even a statue of me. I taught Kuzunoha everything she knows, for almighty’s sake!”
“Okay, I get it.” I stopped her before she could go on a rant. “So... you’re seriously gonna follow me home?”
“Well, you can’t just leave me to fend for myself!” She put her hands on her hips. “I’m sick of living on the streets and getting harassed by creeps like those guys earlier!” She beckoned me closer. “Look, you take me with you, and I’ll give you a big reward. How’s that?”
I wasn’t quite sure how life with a goddess was going to turn out. Still, her offer did sound promising. “Alright, you can come along. But you have to hide in my bag until we get home. I don’t want my mom or dad or anyone else seeing you.”
“Oh, fine.” She grumbled as I set down my bag and opened it for her. As she was climbing in, I asked “By the way, we haven’t introduced ourselves yet. My name’s Ritsuko. What’s yours?
“What’s it to you?” She asked once she had settled into my bag.
“W-Well, I can’t just call you ‘little goddess’.” I replied, picking up my bag with her inside. “Besides, you did say you have a-”
She interrupted me with “Magarikunetta Yama no Megami Hime. Remember that.”
Easier said than done. Goddess Princess of the Winding Mountain? “Don’t you have a shorter name? Or a nickname, even?”
“I don’t need a stupid nickname! My real name’s fine the way it is!”
As I started heading for home, I muttered “Magari it is, then.”
“HEY! Were you even listening?!”
Ignoring her protests, I thought Whatever this reward she mentioned is, it’d better be worth having to deal with her temper.
This short story was inspired by Rui’s introduction in Pokemon Colosseum, Lumi’s introduction in the English-language manga Yokaiden and that one scene in ep 28 of Ojamajo Doremi with Majorika in Doremi’s backpack. In fact, the character of Magari herself is inspired by Rika. In Japanese, her full name is “曲がりくねった山の女神姫”. Ritsuko, meanwhile, is named in loving memory of one of our deceased pet rats.
Hope you enjoyed!

Yokaiden
Written by Nina Matsumoto
Yokaiden is an original English language manga about young Hamachi, a boy who loves Yokai. Yokai are the feared spirits and monsters of Japanese folklore. For Hamachi to admire them so much is unusual, but that's only one of the young man's odd quirks. Despite his differences, Hamachi has been living a modest life with his grandmother. When she suddenly perishes, evidence points to the "friendly" Yokai. To get to the bottom of this mess, Hamachi must enter the dangerous and strange realm of Yokai. Will he clear this conundrum or forever be lost in the mists of legend?
Nina Matsumoto's extensive comics resume stretches back to 2002 when she began "Saturnalia", a webcomic following a downbeat, slacker cop in the year 2999. From there, both her skill as an illustrator and storyteller have only improved. Yokaiden is written in a light, comedic style that is still able to portray the darker, more serious tones of the story. From beginning to end, I was hooked on what silly Hamachi would do next. Even though his character errs on the side of ridiculous, I still find myself emphasizing with him. He just wants to make some friends (and break down the barriers that separate humans and Yokai).
Furthermore, the characterization of the various Yokai was awesome. They had their own human-esque personalities, seemingly justifying Hamachi's desire to befriend them. For example, the kyubi in volume two is manipulative and obsessive, like many a collector gone wild. The kappa are mischievous and skeptical, and the lantern spirit is a gruff, but loving guide. The variety of their characteristics mirrors that of humans. Despite their appearances, they're really not so different from us.
Matsumoto's art in these two volumes is excellent. If you've ever been on deviantart, chances are that you've seen some of her work. My favorites are the anime versions of the Simpsons and Futurama. But if you've never seen any of this, you wouldn't have any idea of what I'm talking about. In any case, Matsumoto's art in Yokaiden is vivid and animated, unique and colorful(even though it's in black and white). When I say colorful, I mean that it's not the same pattern or template over and over again. Her attention to detail is spot-on, and creates a beautiful picture. Even if you don't read the captions, you'll be entranced by the art.
My only problem with this series is that it hasn't put out a new volume in about two years. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT! Right now there are two volumes out, both of which I think are still in print. If not, you could probably find them on Amazon. Yeah, this probably isn't something you're going to find online to read. But it's worth the 10-20 dollars. For a preview of Matsumoto's work, I would recommend either looking up spacecoyote on deviantart or looking up her webcomic Saturnalia. It's rougher than her published stuff and it's been put on indefinite hold, but it's still worth a read.
Score for Yokaiden: 97
