South America - Galapagos (day 7&8)
We woke this morning on the Northwest side of Santiago Island in Buccaneer Cove. After breakfast (French toast and scrambled eggs), we went for a panga ride in search of Blue footed and nazca boobies on the high cliffs. We saw interesting lava rock formations - praying monk, elephant and turkey. We saw pelicans swallowing breakfast, sea lions relaxing on the beach and rocks, and an interesting school of Lissa (mullet) fish along side the boat. We returned to the boat for our snorkelling gear and had checked out the schools of fish along the rocks and inside caves. We did see a white tipped shark, but he was camera shy. We returned to the boat and it headed south to Rabida island.
Rabida island is made of iron rich red lava. After lunch (hamburgers and French fries), we snorkelled. We saw many schools of fish and some sea lions. We also saw a white tipped reef shark, but unfortunately the water was too warm for turtles. We returned to the boat and changed for our hike up the red cliffs for spectacular views and bird watching. We returned to the lagoon at the bottom to see flamingos sleeping. One last chance for sea lions napping on the red sand beach before boarding the boat. The boat then sailed on to Santa Cruz. We had our final supper (chicken, tuna, potatoes, veggies, Swiss roll) and a toast to our excellent 8 member crew. We said our goodbyes to our substitute tour leader Oswaldo and our other tour mates (one is staying on the ship, two are staying in Santa Cruz and the rest of us fly back to Quito). We all finished packing and had an early night.
We had a early breakfast (scrambled eggs), and took a boat tour around Daphne Major, an extinct volcano home to many birds, as we headed to the airport in Baltra.
It was a great 8 days aboard the Yolita - the crew, the food, the wildlife & sealife, the snorkeling, the hikes, the views. What an experience!!! Usually in February they have already had their rains, and the vegetation would be more lush, but this is what makes the Galapagos so special - how everything adapts to their environment.

South America - Galapagos (day 1)
We woke early to head to the Quito airport. There are 8 people in my group for the next week - a nice variety of individuals. We flew to Quayaquil, where we stopped to let people off, to refuel and pick up passengers and continued onto Baltra.
We landed in Baltra and saw our first animal - a land iquana was waiting to welcome us into the airport. We picked up our luggage, met our CEO (Indira) and boarded a shuttle to take us to our boat and home for next 7 days - Yolita II. We also saw our first alpha male sea lion on the pier.
Once on boat we received our rooms (much larger than I was expecting) and had our briefing on what to expect for the next week. We had lunch (spaghetti with garlic toast and salad, and fresh fruit). After lunch we were fitted with all our snorkeling gear for the week.
Our first adventure to shore was on the Island of Santa Cruz - Bachas beach. We took a panga (dinghy) to shore, and dropped our snorkel equipment on the beach and then went for a walk. The sand is made of decomposed coral, making it soft and white, and a favorite site for nesting sea turtles. We saw bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs, marine iguanas, lava herons, lava lizards, black neck stilts, sandpipers and yellow warblers. We ended at a brachish lagoon where we saw Galapagos Flamingos. We then headed back to the beach, got on our snorkel equipment and snorkeled right from the shore. We saw a few fish but is wasn’t very clear.
We returned to the boat and met the other members of the crew and had a welcome toast. We then learned what to expect the next day. We had supper (asparagus soup, emmerjack fish in teriyaki sauce, mashed potato, veggies, strawberries) We had a early night and slept as we sailed 8 hours to the island of Genovesa.
