Things that ran through my head while watching this episode:

--Keh! I, the Bird Fic writer, automatically enjoy Ginko's presence. What an unabashed device she is for info-dumping. Tanjiro totally forgets about Kotetsu long to soak in the oddity of the bird being so full of contempt for him (yet she perches on Tanjiro's shoulder anyway--what a perfectly condescending crow). Keh! When this came out my friend and I had so much imitating her. Keh!

--When it comes to noticing foils, Tanjiro essentially tried to repeat what he did when he saw Genya abusing a child, but was shocked by how he was no where close to breaking Muichiro's bone, let alone injuring him at all. Tanjiro did a lot of talking with his hands here--first trying to intervene, then defending Nezuko (which he actually did get a reaction out of Muichiro), and finally that "no, no key for you!" bratty slap on the hand. And that bratty slap is so cute. XD I love that Tanjiro is so conflicted with "Yes, but you deserve scolding!! I cannot quite figure out why, you need to be scolded!" So different from his usual to-the-point brotherly scolding. Muichiro is an enigma to him.

--This is going slightly off topic, but I appreciate how Kimetsu Academy dives into subtle aspects of the characters, like Muichiro being so callous. It's not just a matter of amnesia, he really is just like that and he's unaware of it, even though his desire to help people--and prioritization of that--makes him good at heart. Although he takes pleasure in being a jerk to Gyokko, to anyone else, he's just cuttingly straightforward, memories or not. Yuichiro might have influence how deep he cuts, but the straightforwardness was always his own.

--I like how Tanjiro's progression is compared somewhat realistically against the Pillars. Yes, he gets much stronger fighting Yoriichi Type Zero, but it takes him much longer to evade the strikes that Muichiro did so with ease; and Muichiro already decreased the difficulty level by damaging the doll. Likewise with Pillars vs. Upper Moons, I like how Rengoku Alone vs. Upper Three shows how outmatched even Pillars usually are, Uzui + a lot of help + Tanjiro's mark unlocked vs. Upper Six shows how hard they had to scrape by to get that accomplishment (and Uzui considered himself less talented than a Pillar like Muichiro in the first place), Muichiro The Genius + a mark thanks to Tanjiro vs. Upper Five, Mitsuri + lots of help (including from Tanjiro who has a mark and already has gained experience fighting Upper Six) + a mark thanks to Tanjiro vs. Upper Four is all set up as believable progression that the ongoing success of the Corp vs. the Upper Moons truly is thanks to the full Corp's efforts thus far.

--Which brings me to what Tanjiro says to Kotetsu about how he may not see an end to Kibutsuji Muzan in his lifetime, but he has to entrust that will to everyone else in the Corp. T H I S. This is what I love about Kimetsu no Yaiba and about Tanjiro as the hero.

--Backing up a second and appreciating other Corp (and Corp adjacent) contributions, Yoriichi. We know he made an immeasurable contribution by teaching Breath technique, and eventually, that his techniques passed down by the Kamado family eventually contribute heavily to Muzan's defeat. It makes me curious how and when Yoriichi Type Zero was made--was it while Yoriichi was a Corp member, and he was embarrassed about it but accepted it as a means of teaching, and he had Kotetsu's ancestor follow him around like an observing puppy? Was it after Yoriichi was ousted and the Corp was near extinguished with Kokushibo going after the Oyakata-sama of that day and such, and an old Yoriichi fanboy made it out of a perceived need to replace what was lost? Anyway, what I especially thought during the episode was "Ufotable sure played around with the background music sounds for Yoriichi Type Zero---ohhhhh, I wonder if this is just the first iteration of a Yoriichi leitmotif???"

--Wait, wait, backing up more. I remember what I really wanted to say: The true testament to Muichiro's skill is that somehow his hair never gets chopped off.

--Ok, so Kotetsu-kun.

--As a character, he leaves the deepest impression for his ruthless training and spitting fire. At his core, though, Kotetsu is just a scared kid who has lost a family member he looked up to, and with his lack of skill, he kind of knows that his family legacy is going to end with him because he can't uphold it.

--I WANT SO MUCH FOR HE AND SENJURO TO BECOME PENPALS

--Tanjiro, please, introduce them

--While it's easy to look most as extreme cases like Kanao and Muichiro getting Tanjiro'd and having it fundamentally shake them to their core and change their whole outlook on life, Kotetsu is also somebody who got Tanjiro'd in one very monumental interaction. Ok, almost everybody gets that moment with Tanjiro, I know, but for Kotetsu, that was a conversation he will probably carry with him for the rest of his life. It gave him the strength to overcome his feelings of inadequacy and bravely face that he has a daunting mission, he might not even accomplish. I'm just so proud of him for declaring that he's going to emotionally prepare himself to see the damage, and even though it's a shock, he's able to overcome it.

--But also, he is just a kid who tends to think in extreme kid ways, and now Muichiro is the scum of the earth. It's also a very funny spin on the mean little boxing coach trope, because usually when a shonen hero encounters a new master at this point in their shonen style hero's journey, that master far exceeds them in ability, experience, and especially understanding of how to tap into whatever power it is that the hero is trying to acquire or master.

--Nope. In this case, Tanjiro acquires the new and improved smelling technique exactly because his new master understands nothing (except for analyzing battle movements) and just brutalized him because that is the simplistic way a child (who does not practice martial arts) would think to push a martial artist to new heights.

--Tanjiro could have died, whether beaten to death, slashed with a sword, or simply dehydrated, and it would have been because he was following the instructions of a child who had no qualifications whatsoever to train him.

--Tanjiro... why

--And all this time!! All this time, what about the hospitable people in the village? Were they not at all concerned what Tanjiro was missing for days? If anybody did see them, were they not alarmed about Tanjiro being on the brink of death from lack of sustenance? Did Kotetsu make jaunts back into the village to grab food for himself and be like, "oh, yeah, Tanjiro? I'm letting him train with Yoriichi Type Zero, because he's going to kick that Pillar's ass."

--Nezuko, were you asleep this whole time???? While your brother??? ALMOST DIED??????

--It's endearing to know that Haganezuka has spent this whole time training as well. We know how full of passion he is, though it usually comes out in anger or fascination for swords, but he's just as open with his happy feelings. The way he looked at that mitarashi dango? That he probably how he looks when he replays Tanjiro's words in his head. You got Tanjiro'd, man.

--But you know what I really love to picture??? Genya and Muichiro. They have been here that would time. Like, it might even have been right after Muichiro finished training with Yoriichi Type Zero that Kanamori even started on a sword for him (knowing how fast they go, after all, though that's a pretty extreme turnaround time). Did Genya and Muichiro hang out? I want so much to think that they hung out silently in the bath. It's like 50 First Dates because Muichiro keeps forgetting who Genya is. Except sometimes he remembers, which takes Genya by total surprise because he yelled at Muichiro and didn't think he'd remember or something. Because the reason Genya stays at the village so long is because Muichiro breaks his other arm or something. --Anyway, a final thing to note--it's not very often we get to see Tanjiro in a tense daytime battle! It's so refreshing to see his battle expressions under bright sunlight! Especially has he is, in some way, learning from Sun Breath techniques.

So... I just caught upto All I see is Sunlight...

And I really appreciate the differences and changes the characters are going through compared to canon.

And Kagaya's response to what happened in this last chapter....it builds intrigue. Like there is more to the picture that we don't know about. Compared to the optimism that his canonical reaction had built in viewers.

Regarding the lineage.... I mean I am pretty sure almost all the readers are convinced that Yorichi was able to atleast save his child- and the Nezuko and Tanjiro are descendants of said child....but... I would like to offer a plot twist theory...

The siblings are descendants of the Ubayashiki's. Either at some point a Ubayashiki daughter married a Kamado boy.... Or an Ubayashiki daughter married a boy from Kei's side of the family. After all the Ubayashiki family is known for their distinct lavender eyes right???

Which would either mean

1) The siblings have both Tsukiguni and Ubayashiki blood

2) Ubayashiki blood and Inherited memories from Sumiyoshi's encounter with Yoriichi

Now the only thing that is tripping me is why Kagaya called Tamayo aunt.

I am pretty sure demons can't procreate...

Where the Taisho Era's and Sengoku Era's characters are switched Era,meaning that The Sengoku Era characters are in Taisho Era and the Taisho Era are in the Sengoku Era.

Yoriichi and Michikatsu original story remains the same except,that Yoriichi was sent to his aunt Himari before he could display his hidden talent earlier,hence he grew under Himari care in her place.however, Yoriichi hidden talent is discovered by Himari and secretly trained him.

Michikatsu would leave his household after the events of their Aunt getting killed by a demon attack when Yoriichi left to bring back some woods from the forest, Michikatsu got the news of what happened in the temple and immediately left in worry of his brother.

Akito Tokito is the estranged brother of Natsuki Tokito

Michikatsu and Yoriichi had close interpretations of Yuichiro and Muichiro personality while mixed with their original personality

What was your inspirations for Michi-tonkastsu Michikatsu?

And will he show up again in your future JJK fics?

Michikatsudon has a lot of inspirations. The first is the character who gave him his name, Michikatsu Tsugukuni, otherwise known as Kokushibo from Kimetsu no Yaiba. 

I just copied the Kanji exactly for that, so it would mean: 

While his first name also contains the Kun'yomi/reading of the kanji for "sterness, severity" (巌みち michi?) and "to prevail, victory" (勝かつ katsu?). His father was the one who named him, as he believed Michikatsu would be strong and successful.

His backstory and name are based heavily off of Kokushibo because what originally captivated me about the Tsukiguni twins backstory was the strong emotions of jealousy, mixing in with love for his brother that he can’t give a voice or a name too. Basically Kokushibo can’t understand that beyond his jealousy at his brother for being more talented than him, the reason he is obsessed with his brother is because he loves him genuinely and it is the only emotional connection he has ever had in his life. For instance, he carries the flute his brother gave him years after the fact of their parting. 

I think there is a lot of powerful emotions in Kokubishibo’s backstory, however Kimetsu no Yaiba tends to be a little bit too black and white at times (like in any other manga a character like Akaza would have gotten a chance at a redemption arc) and so rather than exploring the emotions of both characters, Kokushibo is just one dimmensionally evil and his younger twin brother is practically a saint. 

Nietzsche recognized that envy is a big part of life, and yet we are generally taught to feel ashamed of our envious feelings. They seem to be an indication of evil so we hide them from ourselves and others. Yet, there is nothing wrong with envy, maintained Nietzsche, so long as we use it as a guide to what we really want. Every person who makes us envious should be seen as an indication of what we could one day become. 

I wanted to write a similar character conflict between two people growing up in the same household, with an interplay of both love and envy defining their relationship. 

There were a couple of lines especially for Kokushibo that weren’t even particularly evil, they were just natural jealsouy that anyone would feel. 

“How wonderful it would be if talent was given to those who wanted it.” 

“People who feel no jealousy towards others simply have good luck. They’ve never met someone like him. Someone who lives with the favor of the gods lavished upon them.” 

“The ugliness of not admitting defeat even though they took my head, chopped me up and crushed me. Living in disgrace. Have I lived hundreds of years for this? Was I so afraid of defeat that I became a monster? Did I want to be strong even if it meant eating people? Did I become this miserable creature because I didn't want to die? No. Yoriichi... I just wanted to be you. “

Basically, I wanted to write a backstory where it would be natural for Michi to be jealous of his clansmen Satoru, because basically the Gojo clan is a one man show, they only care about someone who can use the Unlimited Curse technique. The moment Gojo was born, Michi’s existence no longer mattered, so even if they grew close in the same household, the clear favor for Gojo would always taint their relationship. 

Michi is also designed around Gojo to foil him in a lot of ways. He was basically created to be Gojo in different circumstances. Gojo is albino with near all-seeing eyes. Michi is dark skinned with dark hair, and he goes blind after his youth. However, I wanted to avoid “darkness = bad” and “light = good” binary, so Michi has a lot of redeeming character traits that Gojo doesn’t have, essentially Michi has more empathy for people and regard for their interiority than Gojo ever will. Michi and Gojo both interact with children, but Gojo treats them as mini-adults whereas Michi knows that they are children and is desperate to be a good mother to them. Gojo is someone who was denied his homosexual relationship because Jujutsu Society drove his friendship with Gojo apart. Michi is pretty openly a bigender dudewife and is more comfortable being feminine then masucline. Basically the queer elements of Michi’s character is at the forefront, while it’s suppressed in Gojo, because his role in society will come first. 

Gojo and Michi are both extremely rude, they both talk at people rather than to people but it’s harder to catch on with Michi because Michi pretends to be polite and humble. They’re both very genuinely weird. They’re both really cerebral. The thing about Michi is he is smart, he’s just not a genius. Michi is like if he studied every day for the exam, and Gojo showed up drunk five minutes late to the test gojo would still score better. They are both really out of touch with their emotions. Gojo’s entire personality is built around the fact that he’s “Strong” however, and Michi believes that true strength lies in enduring weakness rather than having the strength to overcome every obstacle. 

They also both center their ideals around how children are treated, they are both very aware that Jujutsu Society is a bad place for children to be. Michi’s one and only rule he would never cross is he’d never hurt a kid or intentionally put them at risk. 

One more element of Michi’s backstory is his relationship with his mother, where he is an illegitimate child brought into the family from a prostitute mother because at the time they had no heirs. Of course, a year later Gojo was born which meant his mother’s value to the family became essentially worthless. 

This idea came from Ogata in Golden Kamuy, more or less I had a friend who once said that Ogata’s mom is actually a rare instance of positive sex worker representation because it depicts a man using a sex worker and then throwing away her child as a tragedy, and her subsequent mental decline in a sympathetic life. Wheras most of society treats sex workers as disposable, and they are not like given a lot of humanizing depictions. Basically that left me with a desire to write Michi’s prostitute mother as a strong character, who after being tossed aside and harassed by the clan is able to maintain her pride and dignity and continue loving her son. 

Michi’s entire idea of strength is based off of his love for his mother, which is why his pride comes from the idea of motherhood, and his values revolve around protecting children. He is also more comfortable with feminity then masculinity and wears feminiity as a sheidl, once again as admiration for his mother. Basically I wanted to write a positive sex worker even if just as a backstory character. Michi is who he is in part because his mother shielded him. 

This was also slightly borrowed from Noritoshi Kamo’s circusmtances too, he is also a bastard son forced to live with the clan and endure the harassment of his mother. 

Michi also has inspiration from the story “The Setting Sun” by Osamu Dazai. If you read the book, the main character’s admiration and relationship with their mother who is slowly dying over the course of the story serves as inspiration for most of Michi’s feelings regarding his mother.

Is also a quote I modeled his character around. 

As for if he is going to show up in future fics, yes! The plan is to let Michi have a cameo or at least a small role in every fic. The first three fics were basically centered around Michi at three stages of development in his life. Werewolf, Michi is going to show up in the epilogue I always intended that from the beginning. 

I basically have two fics planned as of now, and that is a fic about the Zenin Massacre Arc, and also a fic where Mimiko, Nanako, and Nanami all survive post shibuya. The second fic will detail Mimiko and Nanako’s journey in the Shibuya arc and how they survive, with Junpei there to round out the trio and will be mainly written from the perspective of Nanami who finds out that Junpei is still alive. The sequence of events are slightly different, they have to be because Nanami doesn’t die, but at the end Nanami chooses to stay outside of Jujutsu Society rather than return home, kind of like how the original plan for his character was going to be he was an office worker who snapped and became a curse user. 

Those are the future appearances of Michi that I have planned currently. He will probably cameo in the Zenin massacre fic too, but he’s less relevant to that plot thread.

Huh... I didn’t expect to see that Yoriichi had a family. I thought Yoriichi was respecting his parents’ wishes of being a monk, and Muzan or a demon killed Yoriichi’s fellow monks or something. I hope the english translation will explain why Yoriichi didn’t become a monk.

-You weren’t sure how to formulate a comforting sentence that’ll cheer him up and were afraid to bother him, but your words were sincere and heartfelt

-Gently leaning against your shoulder, he listened to each and every one of them, giving his heart solace at least for a moment

-You lightly ran your fingers through his hair, giving him a feeling of comfort he thought he had almost forgotten

-You knew he needed time to feel better, to be himself again and let go of all that grief

-You couldn’t imagine how horrid those experiences of his were, he had every single right to feel depressed

-That’s why he came to you in the first place. He needs to let all those emotions out, to feel as if someone understands him, to feel complete again

-He took hold of your hand and looked at you with sorrowful eyes, filled with both regret and gratitude. Gratitude he still had you there for him

-“Things are going to be alright. You may not realize it, but you did your best, and I am so proud of you for that.”

-He listened to your soft voice, taking you in a long, loving hug. He needed it

What is the probability that the demon who attacked Sumiyoshi and Suyako is the same one that killed Uta? it was a random thought that came to me 2 am sorry (do you like cake? I brought some 🍰)

As for the demon, that is a good question! While there is nothing to explicitly prove or disprove this, here is a run-down of the parameters:

1. Blue spider lilies existed on Mt. Kumotori for at least 3~5 centuries prior to Uta being killed. By Tanjiro's time they bloom where she was buried; it's anyone's guess whether they started blooming in that spot later, or if Uta was buried in the spot where they were already likely to appear. There is also no indication of whether Yoriichi had any awareness of the flowers and their importance, I'm inclined to think not, or he'd have tried to eradicate them (or at least warned the Kamado family of the danger. And probably buried Uta in a safer spot. Yeah, he probably didn't know).

2. Demons may or may not had been on Mt. Kumotori because of the flowers. If they were, it was likely under Muzan's directive. As Muzan waited a few more centuries before visiting the Kamado home himself, I'm inclined to think he gathered no strong clues of their existence there. But checking there multiple times through the centuries for the illusive daytime flower? Likely. Many mountains in the area were probably searched many times over.

3. Around ten days passed between Yoriichi discovering Uta's remains, and Rengoku's arrival in pursuit of the demon. While Rengoku took the time to help Yoriichi bury Uta and introduce the world of demons and the Corp* to him,  it is not clear whether or not he found the demon he was looking for.

*It probably didn't go by this title back then, as the 隊 (Corp) in 鬼殺隊 (Kisatsu-Tai, Demon Slayer Corp), wasn't in common use until later periods (or so I'm pretty sure I've heard somewhere). Instead, they probably went by 鬼狩 (Onigari, Demon Hunters) back then, which they are still often referred to in Tanjiro's time. Hhm, I should probably add this to my attempted timeline post.

4. It was probably at least a couple years between Uta's attack and the Kamado couple's attack. Same demon might had come around twice or been hiding the whole time and been thoroughly defeated this time by Yoriichi, or it could have been a second demon if Rengoku made sure to kill the first one the first time.

Weighing all this, it doesn't seem impossible, but I'm inclined to think it was different demons for purely narrative reasons. If it was the same, it would had been nice to get a little more narrative mention of Yoriichi having avenged Uta, but Yoriichi probably wouldn't have maintained such a specific grudge. Furthermore, it's not as if he's got Tanjiro's nose to have any specific way of knowing which demon did it.
