Tbh I am trying very hard to avoid double standards with how I perceive media, especially if it is about relationship. Like for example... Everyone remembers Alphyne? The ship from Undertale that was soooooo cute... right?

However, imagine if Alphys was a man. In that scenario, I don’t think the ship would fly just as good because... Let’s admit it, Alphys is a very weird person. Clingy, nerdy, desperate. If Aphys was a man, people would say he’d be a creep for thinking about Undyne constantly, naming variables after her, drawing her at the margins of his notes, writing fanfic about him and her in domestic situations... People would switch from endearing to "look at this incel being gross about women".

And like, yeah some gender things are applicable, but... until when? Until when we are going to milk this ‘b-but MEN have PRIVILEGE that women DON’T so women being creepy/weird/dangerous is cute lesbian antics whereas men doing this is perpetuation o-of the cycle!!!’ cow? What IS the better time to start being more egalitarian than right now?

Using this particular example, there are three potential ways:

1) Both, if Alphys was male and if she stays as female character, situations are fucked and should not be presented as the cute ship Toby made it be (kinda cringe, no nuance to life but okay?)

2) Both, if Alphys was male and if she stays as female character, situations are okay and kinda adorable (also kinda meh but less so, keep in mind that Undyne ends up admiring Alphys’ passion + they both end up being happy)

3) Regardless of gender, recognise that this dynamic is strange (if not dangerously close to problematic) - whether they are lesbians, whether Alphys was male, whether they were both gay men, whether Undyne was a male and Alphys was female. But yet it is allowed to exist! Some people are fucking cringe to say it the nicest way. And yet some people find their passion endearing. And most importantly - in the media, anything is allowed to exist if this serves the core message of the media! The best way in my opinion.

Basically, I can’t stretch this enough. The best way to ‘check’ your gay ship is to speculate as if to, if it was hetero. If something changes drastically - there are things to consider in my opinion. I feel like we cannot milk ‘male privilege’ cow FOREVER and at some point, equally weird/scary/manipulative behaviour should be perceived through the same lense regardless of the groups involved.

At least that’s done now...

I did actually enjoy going around the monastery everywhere listening to everyone offer expressions of grief and sympathy. A short period of mourning in a game helps to reinforce the emotional impact.

Actually, given Dimitri, Dedue, Ingrid, Felix, etc., it’s more like I’ve joined the personal tragedy club. A lot of Blue Lions have deep scars from losing people. Maybe that’s the theme of this route?

I was struck by Dimitri saying, “Seriously, man, I will straight-up murder anyone if you tell me to. I am one hundred percent serious.” Every now and then Dimitri’s vengeful side has been coming out, and I can very much buy that, with the right provocation, he could be involved in war crimes.

Also, Edelgard: “What happened to Jeralt... It's terrible. If there's anything I can do, simply ask. Even if what you desire is revenge... I'll gladly lend you my power. We can't let them get away with this.“

...well, Edelgard, I’d really like to know who the Flame Emperor is, so that I can track down that organisation and stop them. I don’t suppose you can help with this, can you?

Actually, I do like that even at this early stage it is apparent that there are at least two villainous factions here in uneasy alliance. The Flame Emperor is clearly not one hundred percent on the same page as those who slither in the dark.

Kronya, Solon, and Thales seem to be part of this faction of evil, sadistic shapeshifters who created or empowered the Flame Emperor for their cause. However, the Flame Emperor herself does not seem to care for them, and intends to betray them once they are no longer necessary. They seem oddly unconcerned by this, but perhaps they also intend to betray and get rid of their former ally after victory.

I have some context from Heroes, so my guess at this stage is that the slitherers gave Edelgard a secret second crest to empower her, with the hope that she will be the tip of the spear that topples the church, throws Fódlan into chaos, and lets them do something-or-other. Judging from the dialogue after ‘The Flame in the Darkness’, Edelgard believes that working with them for now will limit their destructive nature, and she can turn against them later and establish a relatively egalitarian society free of the manipulations of gods and monsters.

Presumably crests in general are one of the slitherers’ weapons? They wanted Flayn’s blood too, so I’m sure there’s a magical eugenics element. If so, that might make for an interesting deconstruction of earlier Fire Emblem games: Genealogy of the Holy War, Awakening, and Fates all had that slightly uncomfortable eugenic angle. For the villains’ plot to involve manipulating bloodlines in exactly the same way the player has manipulated bloodlines in previous games could be a clever reflection on the series thus far. I hope they do something neat like that.

I do believe what the Flame Emperor said in ‘The Flame in the Darkness’: Edelgard wants to fight a relatively clean war, but for now feels she has to be allied with these monsters. I daresay she must be portrayed that way in order for her to remain sympathetic in the Black Eagles route. To be honest, even in the Blue Lion route, I expect her to be a tragic villain, and someone I ultimately regret taking down.

It seems like she and Dimitri actually share most of the same ideals? They even have very similar strengths: an idealistic vision for their country, martial strength and nobility, the ability to forge people of diverse origins into a coalition, and so on. However, they have very different flaws. It seems as though Dimitri’s tragic flaw is going to be rage. He could easily be lost in a quest for vengeance. Edelgard’s flaw seems more like ruthlessness or even rationalisation: once committed to a path, she sees it through the end, no matter the cost. They both seem to have a certain capacity to blind themselves.

I haven’t commented much on the Golden Deer so far, and it’s probably fair to say that thus far I find myself more fascinated by the Dimitri/Edelgard story. There’s something there that they’re both deeply invested in, whereas Claude is on the sidelines. I suspect that is actually Claude’s strength, though? He isn’t in the middle of this storm of emotion. Being on the outside lets him move around more carefully, even opportunistically, gathering more information... I understand that the Golden Deer route will be more focused on the slitherers, which would fit nicely. He will see things that others do not. There are benefits to not being in the spotlight.

Anyway, I’m sure a lot of my guesses are wrong, but it’ll be fun to go back and re-read this after finishing the game!

A little less than two weeks later at the nearest UPT station, the rest of what will be Karkat’s team of handlers and bodyguards arrives, as well as Eridan Ampora, Chief Ambassador of the Alternian Embassy to the United Planets of Terra. Eridan’s gotten taller, much the way Feferi has, but he’s still skinny-wiry, and he still wants to gossip at the nearest opportunity. (He says it’s a debriefing, but it is definitely gossiping. The “debriefing” mostly takes place in Eridan’s suite not a strategy or debriefing block.) Eridan is kept mostly on track by his personal assistant, who is also his moirail. The moirail is a middle-aged olive named Gernuk with impressive scars and an affable demeanor.  There’s a picture in the meeting block of Gernuk’s hornbeast lusus lying quite companionably with Eridan’s flying seahorse lusus.

They go over the itinerary; the meetings, press conferences and interviews planned, as well as the diplomatic receptions Karkat will have to attend. Eridan also tries to get information about Dave out of Karkat, mostly in the name of public relations, though he’s obviously also curious about Dave--and whatever relationship he has with Karkat--as well. “I don’t know how we’re going to talk about you being egalitarian and an Emancipationist, Kar. Not with Strider at your shoulder,” he says. “What was Gamzee thinking?”

“I think he was thinking ‘ha ha ha, where else am I gonna send a slave I don’t want to punish?’” Karkat says dryly. “Then the emissary to the UPT thing came up. I’ll figure something out. And before you suggest it,” Karkat says, seeing a thoughtful look cross Eridan’s face. “Dave has no intention of letting me hide his position in my household under a euphemism.”  

“I was just thinking about Emancipationists, Kar,” Eridan says. “It’d be harder to swing him as a rescue though, with him being a concubine and all.” There’s a pause, and Eridan’s expression turns wicked. “He won’t let you use a euphemism?” Eridan asks.  “He pitch after all?”

“I think it’s mostly that people would assume anyway, and he wants to elaborately make it clear he doesn’t care what they think,” Karkat says. “At least that’s the main theory. Because he is actually six sweeps old and secretly more melodramatic than you at that age.”

“I look forward to hearing any stories you might have, Emissary,” Gernuk says. “For my anecdotal collection device.”

“Ger, no.” Eridan says, looking a little dismayed. “Kar, don’t tell him anythin’ I’m beggin you.”

“Who am I to deny such a request? Your moiraillegiance can only grow stronger once he knows every stupid thing you’ve ever done,” Karkat says.  

“He pretty much already does,” Eridan says. “Not like I’ve ever held anything back.”

“Multiple points of view create a more layered and nuanced collection,” Gernuk says.  He reaches over and ruffles Eridan’s hair, Eridan elbows Gernuk in the ribs, fins flared and flushing.  

“Do you think I could see it some time?” Karkat asks, mostly because Eridan’s expression is hilarious.

As is Gernuk’s immediate “You could see it now if you like.”

The rest of the evening is spent looking at Gernuk’s anecdote collection, watching videos and slide shows. (Some mildly pale recordings of date experiences, anecdotes about Eridan, anecdotes about Gernuk, slideshows of places Eridan visited on Earth, Celadon and Mars.) He eventually heads back to his suite, and walks right into an argument.

“I’m just offering to help!” John is protesting.

“By offering to buy me? Fuck that,” Dave spits angrily. “What the hell John?”

“At least let me make an offer?”

“No. He’d say no, and if he actually said yes, my first act as your property would be to kick your asshole between your teeth!”

“You’d be free. You’d be free in the UPT, the documents wouldn’t mean anything,” John says with dismayed confusion.

“They’d mean something to the Grand Highblood,” Dave says. “He wants me where I am, and if I’m where I’m not supposed to be you think he won’t get pissed?”

“If you’re afraid of the Grand--”

“Anyone with goddamn sense is afraid of the fucking Grand Highblood! And what if I’m obeying because I was a goddamn cultist, and he’s like the Clown Pope, what about that? Does that figure into your Good Samaritan schtick?”

“You’re a cultist?” John asks incredulously.

“No, but if I were I’d probably already have--aw fuck, Master,” Dave says finally noticing Karkat.

“What?” John says, not understanding. At a gesture from Dave, he sees Karkat too. “Shit.”

“Okay so, suborning a slave is actually illegal in Alternian space so it’s a good thing we’re not,” Karkat says. “Still, I think your grandmother won’t be happy about this definite diplomatic incident. Which she’ll find out about later, but for now, get the fuck out of my quarters.”

“What are you going to do to Dave?” John demands. “Assault is illegal in Terran Space by the way.”

“Holy shit John,” Dave says. “Are you like being paid to fuck this diplomatic thing up?”

“Well, that’s not a thought I had until now,” Karkat says musingly, “Are you trying to fuck things up?” He was expecting something but not quite this soon, and not someone so close to one of Gamzee’s allies. Eridan had given him a good political overview of the factions, even if he also gossiped to a ridiculous extent.

“No! I just want to help!”

“Well I don’t feel very helped right now John,” Dave says in a hard voice. “So fuck off.”

John looks stricken. He absconds and Dave collapses onto the couch a few seconds after John leaves with his head between his hands.

“So, how did that all come about?” Karkat asks.

“I’m not just sticking around because of the Grand Highblood,” Dave says as if he’d heard something completely different.

“I’m sorry but this isn’t the misunderstanding that would be easier to resolve if the protagonists would just fucking talk to each other,” Karkat says. He goes over to the couch and sits on the end furthest from Dave.  Dave gives him a look, almost amused, out of the corner of his eye. “How did that fight get started?”

“Obviously, he offered to buy me from you,” Dave says. “Weren’t you watching just now?”

“Dave, don’t make me come over there and pap you,” Karkat says.

“Can’t, that would be assault, which is illegal,” Dave says. Karkat snorts at that, and Dave gives him another sidelong, humorous look. “Lalonde’s been interviewing me about my career,” he says. “John was along to translate because my English isn’t as good as you think it is. We talk and the three of us are all friendly, but I think I freaked John out. Well, John and Lalonde, but Rose is made of sterner stuff and doesn’t go trying to suborn people.” Dave sits up and settles against the back of the couch. “At least when you get freaked out, you just blog about the evils of coercion and grooming instead of asking me if I know that I was raped.”

“He did what?” Karkat ask, not able to help the angry buzzing clicks just below the words. “That pisslake gangrenous behemoth carcass! I’m going to--!”

He starts to get up, but Dave grabs him by the arm. “Nope.”

“Dave--!” It’s all he can get out. How dare that little shit think he could attempt some kind of pale intervention on Dave, and in such a stupid, ham handed fashion? How dare he try to force Dave to process something he wasn’t ready to? Something he had carefully compartmentalized and obviously wasn’t ready to deal with? (At the same time he felt a sense of guilty, because Dave had known the reason he’d written those blog posts. Goddammit Past Karkat, you’re an idiot.)

“Nope. It was my fault Master,” Dave says. “Don’t make me pap you, it’s illegal.”

Karkat could break free, probably, but not without hurting Dave. He allows himself to be pulled down next to Dave.  “That little shit,” Karkat says. “That little feculent maggot.”

“Master, don’t go pitch for your translator,” Dave says, amused. He touches Karkat’s face. It isn’t a pap, not quite, it’s too soft, too lingering.  He strokes Karkat’s cheek, threads his fingers through Karkat’s hair.

“My rage is completely platonic,” Karkat says, and can’t really help the shiver or the inclination to lean into Dave’s touch.

“Sure it is,” Dave says.  

“And he’s not going to be my translator if he’s going to be making rude pale advances at you,” Karkat says. “What the hell?” He should probably pull away from Dave’s touch, but he really doesn’t want to. (If he tried, would Dave pull him back? That would be nice, that would be really nice, Karkat thinks.)

“You didn’t really get mad when Mistress Pyrope was doing whatever,” Dave says.

“Did you threaten or want to threaten her?” Karkat asks. “Be honest. I heard you say all kind of things about Terezi being a goddamn mindwitch--very true things, I advise you to share them with her the next time you see her--but you weren’t really angry about it.”  

“Okay, point,” Dave says. “I really like her. She’s kinda nuts though.”

“There is no ‘kinda’ about it. Only a quarter of the insane things she’s done have entered the history books. Do you want me to try to get a new translator?” Karkat asks.

“Nah, just let his Grandma yell at him or something,” Dave says. “It’s okay. Pale assault isn’t a thing for humans, at least not a big thing, I mean. I’m not sure if it would work like that?”

“Two-timing pale is also a thing that isn’t a thing for humans,” Karkat says. Part humorous and partly  a little pitch.

Dave to his disappointment doesn’t even twitch. “This isn’t pale,” he says softly. There’s something in Dave’s tone that makes Karkat shiver a little. Dave shifts on the couch so he’s facing Karkat. “Hey, can I kiss you?” he asks.

Karkat’s thoughts fall into a tangle. He wants to say yes, but at the same time he wonders if Dave is distracting him. If Dave thinks he has to do this.  “Dave,” Karkat says, and might have said more, (though he had no idea of what he was going to say) but Dave takes it as permission. He leans in and kisses Karkat on the mouth, and Karkat can’t help but to kiss back.

Australia, she argued, must accept that the most inhabited parts of the country can no longer be trusted to stay temperate — and, she added, “that means massive changes in what we do and the rhythm of our work and play.”

More specifically, she said, the economy needs to change, not just moving away from fossil fuels, a major export, but also from thirsty crops like rice and cotton.

Building regulations will probably stiffen too, she said. Already, there are signs of growing interest in designs that offer protections from bush fires, and regulators are looking at whether commercial properties need to be made more fireproof as well.

The biggest shifts, however, may not be structural so much as cultural.

Climate change threatens heavy pillars of Australian identity: a life lived outdoors, an international role where the country “punches above its weight,” and an emphasis on egalitarianism that, according to some historians, is rooted in Australia’s settlement by convicts.

Since the fires started, tens of millions of acres have been incinerated in areas that are deeply connected to the national psyche. If you’re American, imagine Cape Cod, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Sierra Nevadas and California’s Pacific Coast, all rolled into one — and burned.

It’s “a place of childhood vacations and dreams,” as one of Australia’s great novelists, Thomas Keneally, recently wrote.

For months on end, driving through these areas, where tourism, agriculture, retirement and bohemian living all meet for flat whites at the local cafe, has meant checking reports for closed roads and wondering if the thick clouds of smoke in the distance mean immediate danger.

There’s an absurdity even to the signs. The ones that aren’t melted warn of wet roads. Just beyond them are trees black as coal and koalas and kangaroos robbed of life.

The fear of ferocious nature can be tough to shake. Fires are still burning in the state of Victoria, and to many, the recent rain near Sydney felt as biblical as the infernos the storms put out — some areas got more than two feet, flooding rivers and parched earth hardened by years of drought.

Last month in Cobargo, a dairy and horse town six hours’ drive from Sydney, I stood silently waiting for the start of an outdoor funeral for a father and son who had died in the fires a few weeks earlier. When the wind kicked up, everyone near me snapped their heads toward where a fire burned less than a mile away.

“It just hasn’t stopped,” said an older man in a cowboy hat.

No other sentiment has better captured Australia’s mood.

That same day, in the coastal town of Eden, government officials welcomed a cruise ship, declaring the area safe for tourists. A week later, another burst of fire turned the sky over Eden blood red, forcing residents nearby to evacuate.

It’s no wonder that all across the area, known as the South Coast, the streets in summer have looked closer to the quiet found in winter. Perhaps, some now say, that’s how it should be.

“We should no longer schedule our summer holidays over the Christmas season,” Professor Eckersley said. “Maybe they should be in March or April.”

“Certainly, we should rethink when and whether we go to all the places in the summer where we might be trapped,” she added.

David Bowman, a climate scientist in Tasmania who wrote an article calling for the end of the summer school holiday, which went viral, said Australia’s experience could help the world understand just how much climate change can reorder the way we live.

“You can’t pretend that this is sustainable,” he said. “If that’s true, you’re going to have to do something different.”

Smoke may be more of a catalyst than flame. For much of the summer, a fog of soot has smothered Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. In Sydney alone, there were 81 days of hazardous, very poor or poor air quality last year, more than the previous 10 years combined. And until the recent rains, the smell of smoke often returned.

Mike Cannon-Brookes, Australia’s most famous tech billionaire, called it part of a broader awakening.

“It’s bringing home the viscerality of what science and scientists have been telling us is going to happen,” he said.

There’s unity in that, as so many have seen climate change up close and personal. But there’s also inequality. The air filters selling out at hardware stores last month cost close to $1,000 each. In December, I heard surfers in the waves at Bondi Beach deciding to get out early to avoid breathing in too much smoke and ash — but farther west, where working-class immigrants cluster, I met a bicycle delivery driver who said he could work only a couple of hours before feeling sick.

Mr. Cannon-Brookes said Australia could seize the moment and become a leader in climate innovation. Ms. Wallworth, the filmmaker, echoed that sentiment: What if the country’s leaders did not run from the problem of climate change, but instead harnessed the country’s desire to act?

“If only our leaders would call on us and say, ‘Look, this is a turning point moment for us; the natural world in Australia, that’s our cathedral, and it’s burning — our land and the animals we love are being killed,’” she said.

“If they called on us to make radical change, the nation would do it.”

In “The Lucky Country,” the 1964 book of essays by Donald Horne that is often described as a wake-up call to an unimaginative nation, Australians are deemed tolerant of mediocrity, but “adaptable when a way is shown.”

One afternoon, I traveled to the Sutherland Shire, near where Prime Minister Scott Morrison lives, with Horne’s comments on my mind.

Near a bus stop, I met Bob Gallagher, 71, a retired state employee with thick white hair. He felt strongly that the criticism of Mr. Morrison for not doing enough about climate change was unfair.

“The first thing the government needs to do is run the economy,” Mr. Gallagher said. “I just don’t understand what these climate change people want.”

I asked him to imagine a version of Ms. Wallworth’s dream — an Australia with a prime minister who shouted to the world: “What we all love, this unique country, is being destroyed by inaction. We’ll punch above our weight, but we can’t do it alone. We need your help.”

Mr. Gallagher listened without interrupting. “I hadn’t thought of that,” he said. “I could support that.”
