Gennai Hiraga.
Tumblr media
Of all the name-droppings the series has been doing, so far they do it exceptionally well when it comes to Japanese folklore and historical personages.
Tumblr media
Hiraga was a real person. Now, what’s so interesting about him is that not only he came from a low-ranking samurai family during the Edo Period, he was also a polymath, a rōnin (wandering samurai) a doctor, a pharmacologist, an inventor. Most of all, he was purported to be a homosexual. He frequented the brothels that showcased male prostitutes.
Hiraga (1726-1779) was a prominent Rangakusha (scholar of "Dutch"-i.e., European-learning) and botanist who conducted experiments with asbestos and electricity. He was also one of the most popular writers of the late Tokugawa period and a regular patron of the male brothels referred to as kodomo-ya. His friend, the leading scholar Ota Nanpo, recorded that "when [Gennai] had money, he hurried to spend it in Yoshicho on the pleasure-boys. There he would spend days at a time, and that is why he glorified nanshoku in Nenashigusa.
He was also a writer, a satirist to be exact. He also wrote guidebooks on the male prostitution in Japan.
Those who like female prostitutes dislike youths; those who like youths revile female prostitutes. — Hiraga Gennai, “San no asa” (1768)
Gennai himself, according to Ota Nanpo, often visited Yoshicho and the "southern wards" of Edo, with their nanshoku teahouses, but never went to Yoshiwara, with its female prostitutes. His biographers claim the scholar was not simply a shudo-zuki but an onna-girai, or "woman-hater."' Men identified as such, like similar characters in Ming-Qing or even in English Augustan literature, find any contact with the female sex revolting.
For the benefit of such culturally deprived men, Gennai lightheartedly describes the nanshoku-jaya experience, including its thrills and frustrations: “Stroking his patron's arm, [a male prostitute] will strike a dreamlike pose, as though he is himself reaching heights of ecstasy. He'll make endless, capricious vows,i and address you with the most intimate names. [Tears] will appear about the eyes on his dazzled face. Aara, that's strange! Is this some apparition? A group [sent from] his manager!k Yai! Those of you who love sweets might find this amusing. But don't laugh. It'd be the gravest mistake not to eat up all those crumbs. You might start taking a liking to wine!”
One of his works dealt with farting and a story about a Kappa “that tries to seduce the actor and then attempts to drown them, in order to complete their task. In the end the Kappa ends up falling for the young actor and instead brings back a less attractive Onnagata as a consolation prize.”
Kappa is a type of a water sprite in Japanese folklore.
Mischievous by nature, they loudly pass gas in public and love to peek up women’s kimonos. Sometimes their mischief turns violent. Kappa have been known to kidnap or rape swimming women, and kill people. A kappa’s preferred method of attack is to drown its victims, or bite them to death under water. Kappa also devour humans alive. Usually they go for the rear end to get at the shirikodama, a mythical ball of flesh located just inside the anus.
Anyway, Gennai Hiraga is indeed an interesting person. The episode tied him up nicely emphasising his Jack of all trades-esque personality.

I can't believe i'm saying this, but... but i'm suspecting the Uni scene with Daigo confessing his love for Maki might not have been a long time ago in ▽...
The ref sheet from the part 4 pamphlet had no grades. They didn't seem *that* different from how they look in 2005 either...
They really look THAT YOUNG to me, possibly in their early 20s. recently graduated. Their connections with Gennai *could* have helped them to get higher positions in the Data Bureau.
"Ni you're desperately trying to make both Maki-Daigo and Rui coexist, right?" Bingo. Because i love them all. 😔
can someone please tap the sign again, the sign being that Shinomiya Rina quote?
i need it… 💧

RECITING WITH YOU IN THIS GLOWING RED WORLD
Tumblr media
HIRAGA GENNAI CHARACTER CARD #1
The moment I finished reciting the given incantation, a dazzling white light flashed before me, and a boy dressed in white stepped out of it.
??? : I see... So I was spirited away... What a valuable experience...
The boy crossed his arms and took in his surroundings, nodding in curious satisfaction.
??? : So, you're the kind heroine who saved me, huh? What's your name?
AYUMI: I'm Ayumi.
??? : Okay, so you’re the priestess girl, so tell me about the familiar spirit.
The boy gazed across to me, eyes shining bright with an energizing curiosity.
...
...
HIRAGA GENNAI : Hmm, I see. That is quite interesting indeed. I'm Hiraga Gennai, a genius inventor!
HIRAGA GENNAI : It’s all thanks to you that I was saved. As a token of my appreciation, I'll give you a guided tour of my laboratory when next we’re there.
(So even at his age, he's already an established inventor with a laboratory... amazing...)
My own gaze remained firmly locked on Gennai's face, eyes full of surprise.
HIRAGA GENNAI : You… You were just thinking that I was far too young to be a successful inventor, right?
AYUMI : W-Wha-- No!
HIRAGA GENNAI : Don’t underestimate me, or I'll modify you.
(What does he mean he’ll modify me?!)
HIRAGA GENNAI : Well, well, perhaps I’ll swap the positions of your eyes and ears? Wouldn’t that be interesting?
AYUMI : I-I'm sorry, I was just a little surprised... I didn't mean to make fun of you…
HIRAGA GENNAI : ...That's good then we won’t have any issues.
(Phew, thankfully I won't be modified… Whatever that means…)
As I gazed at Gennai’s energized profile, still retaining every ounce of his youthful exuberance, I felt my heart flutter in my chest...

Guniw Tools Q-it! Question & Profile (Eng. translation)
Tumblr media
This is a Q&A style interview with Guniw Tools from 1997, when the band consisted of Full, Jake, & Asaki. There's 37 questions in total. The internet doesn't see much translated Guniw Tools content so I wanted to post my own!! Part 1 is under the cut..
Part 2
Before you read: everything in (parentheses) is there because they wrote it, any footnotes are *asterisked & italicized
1. The name, make, & model of the instrument you primarily use? Full: Synths, EMU Proteus and AKAI S950 Jake: Gibson – E-335, Ovation – Deacon Asaki: ESP “Mr. Batsu-ichi”¹, Rickenbacker 625, concert “Asakichi no. 1”², and many many more ¹Mr. Batsu-ichi is a nickname for his guitar, batsuichi roughly translates to : ‘strike one’, a slang term used to refer to divorcées, especially of the first marriage. The actual guitar model is a ESP SA-100 ²Another nickname I think, unsure which equipment it refers to 2.   Things you must always bring as tour necessities? Full: Rubber cement (liquid rubber silicone), bird feathers, rubber snakes, slime, sweets (300 yen worth) Jake: Tupperware (for takeout), Game Boy Asaki: There’s so many things-! 3.   Things that are essential to ensure a live show goes smoothly?
Full: Get to the venue earlier on Jake: Pushups, alcohol. Asaki: Smoke!! and drink!* *the way this is written could interchangeably mean drinking in place of smoking/vice versa, so he could also be saying “drink!! & then drink!” 4.   Things that must be done to ensure the recording process go smoothly? Full: Regular life.* *following a steady routine every day. Jake: Don’t worry. Don’t give anyone a hard time. Asaki: Even if you’re drunk, drink! 5:   Typical time spent rehearsing during a tour? Full: 7 days Jake: It’s usually a mixed bag Asaki: I don’t care about every little thing like that 6.    Do you have perfect pitch? Full: Ought to not be* *like saying “Absolutely! not.” Jake: I don’t have it Asaki: Hm, what if.. what would that would be like?! 7.   Music grades throughout elementary, middle, and high school? Full: 3* *Schools in Japan have a numerical grading system with 5 being the highest grade and 1 being the lowest Jake: Teachers took one look at me, man.. Asaki: √2 8.  Your best subject through elementary, middle, and high school? Full: Math and art Jake: English Asaki: Online classes 9.  Your worst subject through elementary, middle, and high school? Full: Physical Education Jake: Math Asaki: Health & physical education (definitely a lie) 10.  The most frequent way you got in touch with music when you were young? (1) In what form? Full: I’d say probably records (LP).. Jake: △ (triangle) Asaki: I would say it was kind of a round experience...but sharp around the edges... (2) From what age? Full: Age 5 Jake: –––––– Asaki: If you're talking about sugar, a cup and a half. 11.   Were you exposed to music from an early age as part of your development? Full: I don’t recall Jake: I wonder.. Asaki: Ahh yes, I was. 12.   What is your ideal TV appearance? Full: Studio jacking.* *He probably means hijacking a TV stations broadcast signal (Max Headroom) Jake: Today’s Doggie* *A morning news segment that essentially showcases a ‘daily doggie’ acting in cute & interesting ways lolol Asaki: I’ll let you know by tomorrow. 13.   What is your ideal magazine appearance? Full: Appearance on the front cover only. Interview on page 4. Jake: –––––– Asaki: I want to be featured in Kenzo Kitakata's life advice column*!! *Kenzo Kitakata is a Japanese novelist who had a column in ‘Hot Dog Press’ magazine where he gave answers to the various problems of troubled youth
14.   If you were to compare yourself to someone like Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu*, which? *In simplest terms, these three are historical figures often used like a personality test. Nobunaga – Strong leader type Hideyoshi – Teamwork type Ieyasu - Coach type Full: Hiraga Gennai* *Eccentric ‘jack of all trades’ type. Pharmacologist, author, painter, & inventor who composed works on homosexual desire as well as satirical pieces & poetry. Jake: Tamori.* *Comedian known for hosting a weekly music television program Asaki: Charles Bronson* *Western actor, handsome & manly type 15.   Part time jobs you’ve had? Full: Drawing signboards and inscribing names into jewelry Jake: The Guardsman.* *A TV drama, he’s saying security guard in a jokey way Asaki: Effects pedal shop “I don’t need the strain~”* *I think it's a joke that only works in Japanese, the word he used has a double meaning ‘effects pedal’ & ‘strain’ (as in it strains the sound), so when he literally says “I don’t need effects pedal” it's actually like a pun saying “I don't need to be strained!” E.g. kind of like “We nailed it!” 16.    Alcoholic journeys? Full: None Jake: Methyl→Nitroglycerin Asaki: I’ll never drink ethanol again.. 17.   Gambling journeys? Full: None. I spend around 3,000 yen on horse betting (yearly) Jake: Life's a gamble Asaki: 5,000 points to Hara Taira* *A pop culture reference to a quiz show where contestants & celebrities would be asked a question, the contestant bets points on whichever celebrity they think knew the answer. If you both had the correct answer you would win the points amount. A reliable respondent was manga artist Hara Taira, so many people would bet on his correct answer that it became a popular saying “5,000 points to Hara Taira!” 18.   History with women? Full: Just a few (all refreshing/simple types) Jake: ––––– Asaki: Eventually I hooked up with Madonna (enough said)
You can see the rest of the photoshoot here & here
Feel free to share/repost as you wish, I'd like for their work to be as accessible as possible!

I'm really happy to have a Digimon series I really enjoy and get excited about again, especially after how bored I was with 2020. It has some really cool moments and episodes, like I loved the one with Hikari and PetalDramon, the fight between a rampaging Dark-Evolved (unstable) Machinedramon against Devimon's Mega, and the fight with Millenniummon, but it felt like it didn't really do as much with the kids' development. Sure, we have the original kids, Tri, and Kizuna that have already built on them, but they just felt really bland in 2020.
Speaking of Tri and Kizuna, they're not bad imo, but I always just kinda felt them to be unnecessary since we had 02's ending showing the characters and their Digimon, and it just felt like unneeded drama when we already had a happy ending. (I also felt like Tri just left some loose ends like the other Gennai still being active.)
Appmon was okay and I had fun watching it, but it was never a favorite, and I've tried watching Xros Wars several times, but never got into it to finish it.
Ghost Game tho actually has managed to keep my interest despite its slow pacing, and I love the characters, the horror themes, and how crazy it can get with showcasing the Mons of the week could do to a human, like

SHIT.

This series might even end up surpassing Tamers as my favorite, depending on how they tie everything together, and if they stick the landing. (It's still a fear that they might rush things too much. But personally, I think we still have around half a year's worth of episodes left. It's definitely gonna be longer than 2020, perhaps even longer than Xros Wars/Young Hunters.)

First column:
月形 Tsuki gata (crescent shaped) - small comb like this one became popular around 1825 after a sumptuary law banned more extravagant combs. This one was made famous by actor Iwai Hanshiro for the character Mikazuki Osen.
半月形 Hantsuki gata (half crescent shaped) - a small comb like tsuki gata, with a somehow thin and even spine and long teeth, popular during Tenpô era.
閑清形 Kansei gata (kansei shaped) - a small comb with a soft rectangular shape, popular in Tenpô era.
新牡丹形 Shinbatan gata (”young peony” shaped) - small comb with a small spine and rounded corners, fashionable after Tenpô era.
柳川櫛 Yanagawa kushi (Yanagawa comb) - a small comb made from ivory dyed red, then carved to revealed white patterns. Such combs were popular during Kôka era.
Second column:
銀覆輪櫛 Gin fukurin gushi (silver ornemental border comb) - comb with a silver framed ridge, popular during Meiwa and An’ei eras. It is said to have been invented by famous jack of all trades Hiraga Gennai (and hence also named Gennai comb 源内櫛)
光輪形 Kourin gata (Kôrin shaped) - an ornated comb with openwork designs popular during Meiwa and An’ei eras. The patterns were inspired by works of famous painter Ogata Kôrin hence the name
御巻用の櫛  Kushimakiyou no kushi (hair roll comb) - a long comb, big enough to wrap the entire hair around. In Hôreki era, A kyûji onna (teahouse waitress) named Minatoya Oroku who waited a teahouse in the precincts of Sensoji Temple is said to have invented this style who soon spread among the population.
硝子製の櫛 Garasusei no kushi (glass comb) - appeared in first half of 18th century. Glass was quite rare and precious then as it was a foreign good (as shown by the names used: ビードロ/bidoro from Portugese vidro or ギヤマン/giyaman from Dutch diamant). Such combs were very fragile.
角形 Kaku gata (angle shaped) - a comb with a straight rectangular shape, popular in Tenpô era.
Third column:
天丸形 Tenmaru gata ("all round” shaped) - a straight forward name for this comb which has a very large and round “yama“ (spine part) which leave plenty of room for decorations (painted, inlaid etc)
糸鬢丸形 Itobin marugata (itobin round shaped) - “Itobin” (lit. thread like sidelocks) was a men hairstyle from early Edo era (head mostly shaved except for thread like locks on temples and nape). OP wonders if the name of this comb originated from this peculiar look? It’s true the shaft kinda looks like a balding head with the tiniest bit of hair left ;)
山高形 Yamataka gata (tall mountain shaped) - a style fashionable during Kyôhô-Genbun eras. The name is pretty straight forward as it has a pretty high (=taka) spine (=yama”), which made a nice canvas for decorations.
利休形 Rikyuugata (Rikyuu shaped) - popular during Kan’en and Hôreki eras, this comb looks like a longer yamataka comb. OP doesn’t know why it was named after the Rikyû school of tea ceremony.
鎌倉形 Kamakura gata / 政子形 Masako gata (Kamakura shaped / Masako shaped) - a comb popular during Meiwa and An’ei eras, named after the “nun shogun” Hojo Masako (wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of Kamakura shogunate). Such combs were not only ornmental but also used to untangled and straighten the hair - it the go to shape when one’s think about Japanese combs

I like how Hiroaki Hirata pitches in as lots of different Digimon Adventure characters. He's a famous voice actor and Digimon isn't exactly a small project so I find it funny that they went 'can you narrate the show and voice young Gennai and Leomon?' 'Yeah sure' 'oh we also need someone to voice a news anchor in Tri for thirty seconds' 'OK'

櫛 - kushi (Japanese combs types), handy chart by Edo lover Nadeshico Rin.
Rin doesn’t detail materials, but you can see here illustrated tsuge/boxwood (+dark woods I can’t replace for yamataka, maybe sugi/cryptomeria for tenmaru?), bekkô/turtle shell, zôge/ivory, shikki/lacquered wood, glass.
While translating this chart, I stumbled upon this overview of the Kushikanzashi museum dedicated to hair accessories. It reminds that before Edo era, women used to wear their hair down/loosely tied (垂髪 subeshigami styles = hair tied behind and hanging down/long flowing hair).
When nihongami appeared (=the trademark Japanese bun we think of when thinking about “ancient Japan”), it was first considered casual style, so a woman would in fact nor wear an updo for formal events.
When nighongami spread, demand for combs increased, leading to a flourishing craft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Combs also varied widely during the whole period, following the fashion and styles, from big+wide during peak Edo (which loved big hairstyles) to dainty+narrow in Meiji era (where hairstyles were much more muted).
As for the combs types depicted by Rin, you can see from left to right, top to bottom:
First column:

[Part one here]
Here’s the final six pages.
Project Mei
Meiko faces her dad, asking more about Meicoomon and her purpose. The old man feels nervous to talk about it, yet he decides Meiko should know. He explains Meicoomon's reason to exist was to create their own squadron of Chosen Children in order to fight menaces from the Digital World. But the Digital World’s Gods hated it and told them to cancel the project.
When Meiko talked about Meicoomon being made to kill digimon, her father elaborated it more, about her not being a total killing machine and she would only kill the enemy if they refused to give up, by injecting a powerful virus in their data. Meiko gets mad, because now this means Taichi, Yamato and their friends’ digimon were infected. The old man strokes his chin, hearing that more digimon might be in trouble. He then refers to Meicoomon also having an antivirus in her program, in case of one of their allies getting infected by accident. This makes Meiko less concerned, but she remembers of some strange parasite digimon consuming her.
Mr. Mochizuki finds it odd, a parasite digimon? And then he receives a call from the Data Bureau agent Nishijima Daigo, to talk about Meicoomon with him and Meiko. The man asks why, but the other couldn’t give details sadly.
Meanwhile, Daisuke tells Koushiro and the others about Himekawa’s offer, and that she could help them. Not that Daisuke believed her, because she was extremely shady and stalking him, but he started to wonder if she wasn’t involved with what happened to Imperialdramon and Meicoomon.Ken thinks that’s possible, but they have not enough evidences to accuse Himekawa. Mimi wonders how Meiko is feeling and offers to talk to her.
Sora thinks it’s too dangerous for them to fight, so she says to only work as their support, Jou apologizes and says he cannot help much since there’s a school exam coming, but he also joins the support cast – in case of them being needed, they will rush to aid their friends. Yamato is afraid of Gabumon’s health, and Taichi decides to keep seeking for Meicoomon in the meanwhile. Daisuke and Ken are also concerned about their partners, but they can’t stay doing nothing, so their help would be investigating stuff for Koushiro. Miyako, Iori, Takeru and Hikari agree to assist Taichi in the search for Meicoomon.
Meiko and her dad are escorted to the Data Bureau HQ, where they meet Nishijima. With him, there’s a pretty man in light robes, Gennai. They came to discuss Meicoomon’s status and destiny. The girl knew this could mean they had to put Meicoomon down, but…
… It was about one of the scientists in the old program contacting them to allow her complete Meicoomon’s program in order to stop the imminent crisis. Meiko raised an eyebrow at this – She was aware Meicoomon’s program was incomplete, but not totally? Like, Meicoomon had been functioning like a legit digimon being, having a heart and such… What could this woman mean?
The said woman was Himekawa, and Meiko was surprised by that revelation. Why would she…
The reveal
The young kids and their seniors were running against the time. Koushiro had copied the papers Meiko had brought him before so he could read them calmly later, and now he was sitting in his office checking them, again. Tentomon wonders if there’s something interesting in those, only to catch with his eyes some detail they skipped.
The developer of the virus program. He then analyzed the data from V-mon and Wormmon’s eggs and noticed it contained an ID number from the papers, which means the mysterious parasite digimon was also human-made. He checked the developer name and… Maybe Daisuke’s suspicion was right.
Mimi talks with Meiko, and the girl seems a little upset. Mimi tries to ask what happened, but Meiko asks to talk with Koushiro as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Taichi and the 02 group report seeing Meicrackmon on the loose, Koushiro tells them to not approach her and prevent her from hurting people and digimon.
Ken and Daisuke are not great at hacking things, so their plan was asking Himekawa how they could save their digimon from getting their data corrupted. Himekawa knew he would come, especially asking for help.
She talks a bit about her developer function in an old project, that she was this close to fixing corrupted digimon data… But the government ceased their activities. Ken asks how they can save their digimon, and she says she couldn’t do anything without the data under the Data Bureau’s server. The boys look at each other, and she asks them to retrieve that data for her.
They would say something, but Koushiro calls Daisuke immediately. The duo leave after saying they would discuss that with their friends. Koushiro gathered all the info given by each party. It was when Meiko connected the dots and messaged Taichi immediately about a detail. Koushiro also understood what that meant, but Daisuke was a little confused. Until he noticed it too.
Taichi and his juniors were in battle right now, and Meicrackmon was Causing a lot of damage. She then mutated again into Raguelmon. She was even more powerful thanks to the parasite digimon. Silphymon, Shakkoumon and WarGreymon weren’t happy with that, neither were their partners.
Meiko, Daisuke and Ken went to the battle scene immediately. It was when the 02 group, Taichi and Meiko saw Himekawa hiding in a spot. Meiko accuses her of manipulating everyone, and the woman smirks.
Of course they caught her. But it’s okay, she got permission to reactivate the project Mei development in order to stop Meicoomon. Why was she using those kids like that?
It was for Bakumon.
Gennai meets Koushiro
During that climax battle, Gennai came in, with Nishijima, to explain details to Koushiro. The decision to not destroy Meicoomon was unanimous and everyone agreed to keep watching her development. But there was another detail they were trying to avoid – Himekawa’s obsession with bringing her partner back. Nishijima says that he was her friend and teammate, witnessing the fall of them. Himekawa’s digimon dark evolved into Mugendramon and attacked the enemies, but lost control and went on rampage. His partner and the others had to evolve further to stop Mugendramon, who returned to digiegg state. The egg got corrupted and was told it couldn’t hatch, but Himekawa refused to believe it and became obsessed with the idea of creating a program able to fix the problem.
They had to stop her, and since she was using her knowledge as a former Chosen Child for the government, they had more reasons to intervene. Daigo joined the Data Bureau as some “spy” for Gennai and Homeostasis, to keep an eye on her. But now they just discovered she was doing some illegal experiments and created a digimon called Shademon, which can control and corrupt other digimon, and especially cause Meicoomon’s incomplete program to go on a rampage. All of that in order to convince the Data Bureau to reactivate the project development.
Koushiro wasn’t aware of those details, but this was what he and Meiko realized. So now he feels a little disturbed by the consequences of that plan, and then he just wishes they could do something to stop Himekawa and save Meicoomon. He shows the other two the copy of the project’s papers and points to the section about Meicoomon’s restore abilities. Tentomon comments that if they all work together, they can find a way to activate said function.
In the Battlefield, the kids, Taichi and Meiko try so desperately to prevent a disaster. Ken calls Koushiro, to update him about their situation; Daisuke was about to snap, but he’s trying to act cool right now. Koushiro then tells Ken to pass the phone to Hikari, and then he asks the girl to use Angewomon’s healing powers on Meicoomon.
Sure, to do that you will need backup right? WarGreymon and Shakkoumon could do it. Miyako says they could call the others if things get bad, which everyone agreed. Silphymon jogress was undone, and Tailmon evolved to Angewomon. The rest should keep Raguelmon occupied and without touching her, while Angewomon could use her healing powers to exorcize the parasite enemy inside her body.
Back to Koushiro’s office, Nishijima and Gennai keep explaining what happened before, and then Gennai revealed that Bakumon’s egg had hatched but the digimon turned into a Dark Master, the one the kids fought before. Tentomon then asks if the Dark Masters had been reborn, and Gennai says their data got locked in the Dark Area. Nishijima exclaims and asks why they didn't tell him before, only to Gennai explain Bakumon had turned into a vile creature so they couldn’t break the news to him or even Himekawa. Nishijima agreed that could’ve been worse than now.
“So this is what she meant by being a ‘former’ Chosen Child” Koushiro muses. Gennai confirms it, they revoked Himekawa’s access to the Digital World and turned her digivice inactive, she was really out of their reach so this was the best option they could find. Nishijima laments that.
Rampaging Meicoomon
Since Angewomon had holy powers able to extinguish evil and heal the good, their idea was simple: Keep Raguelmon occupied, get Angewomon to use Saint Air at her and then take the chance to destroy Shademon.
Easier said than done.
To protect Angewomon from getting hit by Raguelmon’s claws, they would have to stop her first. But how do you stop a digimon from moving without touching them? These were times Daisuke wished Paildramon could help them, but…
Suddenly, a very beautiful digimon woman appeared – it was Rosemon and she used her whip to grab Raguelmon. They looked behind and saw Mimi coming. The group focused on attacking Raguelmon, but not at full force so they could avoid destroying her.  When Angewomon approached behind her, the holy angel released a heavenly aura to purify the enemy, but it wasn’t enough to beat Shademon. The group was losing their hopes…
Himekawa knows she can’t let them take Raguelmon away from her hands, or else she would never finish her program to save Bakumon, so she inserted a few more codes to induce a new mutation. The laptop overheats due to the max data loaded in it, making Shademon lose control over Raguelmon, turning her extremely feral.
Raguelmon mutates to another higher form, Ordinemon, and starts corroding the barriers of human and digital worlds. The group of digimon fighting her had to retreat for now. Meiko is mad, she snaps at Himekawa for that, and the woman is terrified – everything got worse. She lost the data, she lost her chances to bring Bakumon back!!
Gennai realizes this could mean the end of both worlds if they don’t take her down, Nishijima requests Gennai to gather his and his friends’ partners, in order to fight alongside those kids. By that request, Gennai tells Daigo to bring his friends as soon as possible, and leaves in order to gather the Holy Beasts. Koushiro is intrigued, but he decides to keep helping them all as soon as possible. Koushiro’s desire to help everyone with his knowledge unlocks the HerakleKabuterimon form (outside the building, of course), which he rides in, taking Nishijima with him.
Jou, Yamato and Sora come in, concerned with what was happening. Jou couldn’t take a test at this hour! So he grabbed Gomamon and pedaled his bike til the heart of the battle. Yamato and Sora came together, afraid of what could happen to Taichi, the younger kids and Meiko. Their wishes to protect their beloved ones and their loyalty to their friends unlocked Hououmon and Vikemon for Piyomon and Gomamon. MetalGarurumon carried Yamato and Sora to the battlefield.
The group, almost complete, started to fight Ordinemon as an attempt to stop her. Daisuke clenches his fists, because all he could do was watch. Ken felt even more useless, but he knows even without their seniors being able to evolve their partners, Taichi and the others were able to find ways to help. He had witnessed it, as the Kaiser. Himekawa is still petrified by her mistakes, so she does not notice Ken taking the busted laptop from the ground. He knew soon or later this would come handy, and, if they’re lucky, they can remove the HD disc and connect it to Koushiro’s computer at the office.
They had no other option but to escort people away from that area. Himekawa had no other option but to go with them, and call the Data Bureau to secure the area.
Himekawa discovers the truth about Bakumon
They went back to Koushiro’s office and their digimon just jumped inside the pocket dimension inside the server (Miyako has full access to it, remember?) so it didn’t feel too crowded outside. When Miyako tried to contact Koushiro, the boy replied that he and Nishijima went to gather the Holy Beasts’ partners in order to save the world.
Daisuke went to check the V-mon and Wormmon eggs, just to distract his head for a while. They were fine, but still not hatching. He wouldn’t force it though, he preferred to expect his and Ken’s partners to come at their own pace. Ken was worried about Daisuke’s mental health so he just went to ask if he was okay, and the other boy replied “Yeah, I’m better now. No worries.” which made both smile, one in relief.
Jou and Meiko were staring at Himekawa, who was still lost in her thoughts, broken inside actually. Patamon asks from the screen what they should do with her, and Takeru decides they should at least ask her some info. Taichi is not sure if Himekawa would help them out though. Ken tries connecting the HD disc to Koushiro’s computer with Miyako’s help, and by a great miracle it was still running. They decide to examine its contents, while Jou, Taichi, Yamato and Takeru watch the woman. Iori inspects the HDD with Ken and Miyako. Daisuke is still quietly watching the eggs, and Hikari, Mimi and Sora try to help Meiko cool off.
Meiko had her own reasons to dislike Himekawa after this. And the group was trying to fix Himekawa’s mess, and Daisuke now was aware who was the culprit for what happened to Imperialdramon. But he tries to not get involved with the interrogation, he needs to cool off as well! He needs to cool off…! He and Meiko actually. Sora takes both outside and try to hear them out.
Daisuke growls about what happened, but he doesn’t want to fight a younger adult. Meiko vents about knowing Himekawa for years and never expected her to do something like that before, but now she noticed the red flags. But deep down both Daisuke and Meiko noticed something strange in Himekawa, something they couldn’t be totally mad at her and yes feel pity for. Sora wonders what it would be, and Meiko says “She’s lonely” Daisuke remembers of the dude, Nishijima, who had said to be her ex-boyfriend. All three start thinking of why she would do something like that, if she had a boyfriend before…
Himekawa is still in shock. But she’s coming back down to Earth, little by little. When the kids ask her about what she was aiming for she mentions that her goal was trying to save a digimon from data corruption. Mimi frowns, so that lady had noble reasons… Himekawa continues by saying the Project Mei was her chance to cure data corruption, how close she was from it until the government ceased their operations. Hikari almost snapped, and Taichi saw it in her eyes. Someone connected with the power of life itself like her would feel this narrative was too soulless and toying with the concept of life.
Sora took Daisuke and Meiko to go buy something for them all to eat and drink. The investigation outside gets more and more creepy, as Himekawa starts feeling delusional in front of them, saying maybe now they will let her finish her job! Maybe now she will see Bakumon once again! Hikari snapped politely, “That’s not how you will get your partner back!” and everyone is shocked. She continues: “Meicoomon is suffering right now because of your actions, she’s not a toy! She’s not a tool! V-mon and Wormmon are in the Digiegg stage because of you! ” – That definitely made them all silently look at Hikari, until Takeru says he agrees with her.
Koushiro calls them, saying he and Nishijima just reunited the Holy Beasts’ partners and they’re moving ahead to the battle field. Taichi and Yamato decide they should meet with them and fight Meicoomon. Seven of them agreed, but Miyako said they would stay there trying to find any useful information to help them. Thus, Taichi and the others leave. Piyomon says she wants to go but Sora’s not back yet– And Sora, Daisuke and Meiko come in, with food. Daisuke asks where’s everyone and Iori says they went to face Meicoomon. Piyomon tells Sora she wants to go, and then Daisuke comments she should go and take Meiko with them. Sora’s not sure about this, she doesn’t want to fight a friend’s digimon… Only to Daisuke put a hand on her shoulder and say this would’ve been what Meicoomon wanted. Meiko is a little antsy, but she gets it – Mei-chan would prefer to be destroyed than keep hurting innocent people, especially her friends and family. With those kind words and encouragement, Meiko, Sora and Piyomon go after Taichi and the others. Miyako and Iori smile, because they know exactly where Daisuke got this lesson from.
The group joined forces with the previous generation – Higashikata (Qinglongmon), Kitabayashi (Xuanwumon), Minamino (Zhuqiaomon) and Nishijima (Baihumon) – for this battle. They examined all of their possibilities, but Ordinemon had strong defense by creating dark digimon from her wings. Omegamon was good with numbers, so they decided to let it take care of it. Koushiro analyzed the other Final form digimon’s specialties – and then he discovered Hououmon has an ability which could purify Meicoomon. “Maybe if we combine the divine power of the Holy Beasts with Hououmon’s special ability…”
Holydramon, Seraphimon, Rosemon and Vikemon were in the same group fighting evil digimon while opening the path for Hououmon and the Holy Beasts. It felt a terrible risky idea, but they wanted to give it a shot.
The Miyako, Ken and Iori were so busy searching for anything they could use to stop Ordinemon that they didn’t notice Himekawa leaving the room, but Daisuke did and went after her. The Lady had lost her composure and was trying her best to ‘Save Bakumon’ that the poor boy couldn’t keep watching that disastrous talk. But nothing he could say would make her stop right… She’s beyond salvation. It was when Gennai appeared from a security camera and stood in front of her. Daisuke approached cautiously to hear their conversation. This is how he and Himekwawa learned about Bakumon’s fate – Bakumon had hatched but became a vile creature, and then evolved straight into Megidramon, becoming a Dark Master. Daisuke wonders if said Dark Master was the one Taichi and the others had fought before, and this was exactly what Gennai said next. Mugendramon’s data was sent to the Dark Area, sealed alongside the other three Dark Masters.
Himekawa Maki does not believe it, and condemns Gennai and the others for destroying Bakumon. Daisuke couldn’t stand that and approached a little more. She screams, and falls on her knees, crying loudly and holding Gennai’s robes. Gennai himself did not like to bring bad news, and Daisuke knew it. So, the boy tries to talk with Himekawa… But she was too deep into madness to hear a child out. Gennai apologizes for this, but she does not listen. Suddenly, Data Bureau agents appear and take Himekawa under custody. Daisuke gets confused about how did those people know, only to find out he got something like a small spy wire attached to his goggles. “Since when…!?” It was probably the time he went to save Imperialdramon, maybe??
(No. It was implanted on his goggles when he first met Nishijima. )
Saving Meicoomon
They had to take that chance and purify Ordinemon, so they didn’t want to waste it. The moment they had it, Hououmon and the Holy Beasts gathered their powers and Hououmon used her Starlight Explosion on Ordinemon’s body. Since it was amplified by the godly and holy power of the Holy Beasts, Ordinemon started to be purified.
Ordinemon then converted into Rasielmon. The gloomy atmosphere changed drastically, filled with hope and happiness. Meicoomon didn’t die, and she was purified from Shademon… Which got destroyed by Omegamon’s cannon attack the moment it left Rasielmon’s body.
Rasielmon apologized for her acts, but the kids and the previous Chosen said it wasn’t her and Meiko’s fault. Meiko was so thankful her digimon had turned back to normal. Before reverting into Meicoomon again, Rasielmon said she had to do one more thing, and rushed to Koushiro’s office at the speed of light. Meiko wonders what it is, but the other eight were pretty sure what it was.
Daisuke returned to the office, where Miyako, Ken and Iori were ready to leave and meet their seniors. They say they found out a way to help in the battle and Daisuke grins. Suddenly, Rasielmon appears in a smaller size to not destroy the room and talks to the four. An unfazed Ken then comments “Maybe they solved it without us…” and Daisuke sighs, he wanted to help them all so badly…
Rasielmon then moves to the room with V-mon and Wormmon’s eggs and uses her powers to heal them, making them hatch. Iori finds this curious, only to remember the files said Meicoomon has also an antidote to her own virus program. The eggs hatched into Chicomon and Leafmon, making Daisuke so thankful he immediately hugged Rasielmon as his way to thank her.
Ken also thanks her, but in his own way by bowing and being polite. Rasielmon giggles, and then disappears. She returns to also heal the other eight’s digimon as her apologies, then reverted into Meicoomon and fell on Meiko’s arms.
A few weeks later, Taichi and the group heard some good news regarding Meicoomon: Hououmon and the Holy Beasts’ powers supposedly had helped to finish her program, becoming more stable and suitable for interacting with other people and digimon. Data samples of her special ability – by infecting and controlling digimon with a virus – were used to create vaccines in any case of her accidentally infecting civilized/pacific digimon. Nishijima asked Meiko’s parents to allow her and Meicoomon to be part of the Data Bureau as some honorary agent. Daisuke commented he was a little jealous about that, and that it would’ve been cool to work as some special agent. Koushiro jokes about him already serving in some special unit only to make him go like “??! Really!? Am I a secret agent!?” only to Taichi cut the joke by saying he needs to get a little more mature to handle special agent business. They all laugh, and then they all return to their daily routines.

F/F in Ōoku
Ōoku is an historical manga by Yoshinaga Fumi, set in an alternate reality of Japan. During the time period in which the Tokugawa shoguns ruled, a deadly pandemic spread amongst young men, severly reducing their numbers to 1/4 of the population in a matter of decades. Following this, women start taking on their work, inheriting their businesses and titles, in order to make their families survive and prosper.
This situation leaves the country in a very dangerous situation in regards to the other countries. And so the first female Shogun will close the borders to the outside world, mirorring the real life edicts leading to the seclusion of Japan in the XVII century. To assure that the female Shoguns can have heirs, a palace of male concubines is built, also mirorring the quarters of the Edo castle in which real life women related to the Shogun (mother, wife, concubines) lived, which was called “Ōoku”.
Tumblr media
The story of this 19 volumes long manga plays with the genders of historical figures and follows the fate of the women and men in this alternative version of history. It is not a joyful tale. Although there are plenty of beautiful and sweet moments, it is also filled with a good variety of the kind of violences you can expect from History: depicting diseases, starvation, sexual assault and especially many acts of murder.
While relationships between men and women are a big part of the story, there is also a great amount of very well written and varied relationships between women, be they familial ones, friendships, loyalty between a lord and their subjects, animosity and hatred and, of course, romantic ones.
Yes, the manga indeed contains some textual and subtextual m/m and f/f relationships.
Tumblr media
Because the story goes through centuries of history, we see the main characters age, die and change every few volumes. If you’re into stories mostly focused on f/f content exclusively and with a happy tone, you may not enjoy Ōoku. But if you are into stories with complex female characters and the typical difficulties/themes that come with historical stories and tragedies don’t bother you, it’s a manga that’s certainly worth the effort to get into.
I definitely loved the various cases of intense loyalty and feelings between the various Shoguns and their right-hand women. Some will read as platonic, but others definitely had that little something that made me ship them. Like the messed-up childhood friends who both stayed close until old age, only to end in a tragic murder-embrace. Or the subject who killed a noblewoman’s older sisters because she thought her more worthy of becoming a great lord and wanted to help her reach that goal.
Erm... like I said, Ōoku is bloody.
One of my favorite characters is Gennai, the alternate version of a famous historical gay scholar.
Tumblr media
In the manga, Gennai becomes a crossdressing lesbian and is an absolute delight of a character. She also is quite enamoured with Tanuma, the Shogun’s right-hand woman who Gennai works for, as they attempt to find a cure to the disease that their country has suffered from for a century by now.
This will lead to a huge conflict with another love interest of Gennai, a popular actress called Kikunojo, who will enact a vicious vengence on her for being neglected and played with. But their story won’t end there...
Gennai is very charming, sharp-witted and more than a tad insolent. Her lovingly androgynous character design is also a huge selling point.
Tumblr media
I thought I could not love any other character of Ōoku more than her but that notion got seriously turned upside-down when the tragic crossdressing wives appeared.
That’s right, wives. As the Tokugawa’s influence starts to weaken and the story comes near a close, the husband sent to marry the penultimate Shogun turns out to be... a woman in disguise.
She is from the Emperor’s family, who is currently very much at odds with the Tokugawa family, but Iemochi, our current Shogun, is very dedicated to maintaining peace and repairing their relationships. So when she discovers she has been tricked, rather than create a scandal, she helps hide the truth and works toward building a good relationship with her new “husband”.
Chikako, the young woman taking the place of her brother, prince Kazu, has her own quite messed-up and fascinating reasons (that I’ll let you discover) to be here, but she initially very much despises the place and people she has to stay with. Iemochi, with her kindness and smarts, will however slowly build a place into her heart.
Tumblr media
The evolution of their relationship is a beautiful slow burn to behold. It certainly helps that I am very much into the archetypes of the characters and story involved but it is also very well written and subtly depicted. Watching them grow closer, reading their various conversations, seeing them playing go together, discovering Chikako’s bashful affection as it blooms and witnessing them eventually turning into a family, it is all such a treat.
But let’s remember that life (and history, and Ōoku) is cruel, and so it must ends in tragedy and heartbreaking, deliciously angsty grieving.
Once again, Ōoku is not exactly a happy story, but for those that enjoy the pain of such wistful and tragic tales, it’s a wonderful manga. Please give it a try if you’re curious about it!

Meicoomon should've reformed as a digiegg at the end of digimon tri Our Future without the infection and I will die mad about it what the hell was that ending. Evil Gennai/fake Ken (also give me back old man Gennai 2021 I don't care who that young guy is give me the old man back) had the evil corrupt memory cube thing that must've been in Meicoomon so logically she's infection free now, and don't give me any of that "digimon don't reform in the human world", exhibit a; cocomon from the first movie reformed as an egg after the virus inside of them was destroyed, destroying the weak Cherubimon they died and came back. Ordinemon did die in a different manner destroyed by Omnimon but the corruption in them was completely destroyed, Meicoomon deserved better. As well why didn't Omnimon special boy mode purify heal and help her? The brutal hacking slashing taking apart was unnecessary violent and cruel, that was no victory that was just disgusting. The cruelty leaving Meiko without her partner while all the others returned was awful I was hoping when the in training forms showed up an egg would roll in on the water current to Meikos knees. I know others won't agree cause yeah Meiko and Meicoomon were huge pains in the ass for plot reasons and as completely new people, but I don't think either of them deserved what happened, especially as Meicoomon was showing signs of redemption she stopped Meiko getting crushed at the school why was that never brought up again? I wanted her to swoop down when Meiko was shouting to be let go yelling as she swiped at Matt thinking he was attacking Meiko incorrect but protective still bonded driven to keep Meiko safe, they were partners. I have a lot of feelings on the matter at the moment I'm just angry and sad over it, Meiko is alone now. Honestly when TK was writing that email and said it'd been three months, I genuinely thought she'd killed herself that he was writing to someone who'd never reply because she'd cut herself off from her support network by moving away and had just gone through that traumatic event losing Meicoomon I thought genuinely she couldn't cope but then no she's, fine? And good for her I'm glad she's managing but it felt, wrong again I was hoping to hear soft pads of paws and Meicoomon trotting up to pull her trouser leg asking who was on the phone but no and then Agumon talking to her felt insensitive. Like "hey we know you tragically lost your digimon partner but you can still be our friend forever hanging out with us and our digimon who are and will be completely fine unless the plot calls for angst okie bai enjoy the Christmas presents that probably have ginger cats on that look like Meicoomon!"
I don't know, I enjoyed the movies yea but some parts I didn't and I wish they'd let her have Meicoomon back healed safe from future infection I think it'd have been more fitting to heal the relationship help the person than destroy them? Especially cause it feels for naught as evil Gennai has the evil data cube so he's just gonna do it all again? So, why not, she deserves to live even if said she shouldn't have been born she deserves her life. Its not the circumstances of one's birth but what one does with life, and she loved Meiko she used her life to make Meiko happy protect Meiko and all that? Yes I'm bringing a shortened Pokémon qoute into this.
Rant over for now till I think of more

‘’Oh, compared child, compared child, I already know. You don't have to tell me, I know I'll never be as good as her.’’
‘‘keep reading’‘ for theorizing and information on my second animatic coming up for SDS!!
*warning, there’s a LOTTTTT*
theory kinda thing lmao:
eban and gennai both feel inferior to each other in some way.
eban is jealous of gennai because it seems their parents favor the younger sibling; gennai gets gifts from them for getting good grades, to which gennai is told by his father he can just give it to eban if he doesn’t want it; which is never the case because gennai is never a giver. eban’s even been called a ‘’bastard child’’ by gennai during a fight; which probably tells the reason why his parents don’t seem to care much for him...eban has also said ‘’...photography feels like the only thing that can’t be taken away from me.’’  things that eban owns, from minor to major,  gets stolen by gennai, and he couldn’t do anything about it because his parents wouldn’t care. eban has probably lived a rough life with the title of ‘’bastard child...’’ part of me feels like gennai learned that phrase from their parents calling eban so. So naturally...eban has always been envious of gennai’s affection he gets from their parents. he feels inferior in that way...eban has never fully revealed his feelings like gennai has;;;; there’s only been a lot of foreshadowing. so i could be completely wrong which is why i used the word ‘’probably’’ a lot lol. but yes...
*cries*
ONTO gennai. gennai is much more obvious on why he feels extremely inferior to eban. ‘’you’ve noticed it too, right? eban is too far away for me to reach that kind of radiance.’’ gennai sincerely loves his big brother despite his independent,  rather crude and sometimes off-putting personality toward others; as maskcover quoted in the q and a chat, ‘’...Gennai is no one’s b*tch... Except for eban.’’  he’s known as a hoarder, and is always scared of people judging his collection (of literally everything he lays his sights on,) as based on when y/n discovers his room. he always tells her to stop judging, stop looking. why did this habit of collecting everything, even old shoe boxes, begin? y/n was able to deduct he as lonely. he never talked to anyone besides eban, and without eban...gennai was left alone in a room full of ‘’material items that held no worth when placed beside sentimental value’’.  i believe he’s always felt lonely and had troubles making friends from a young age. he has troubles getting along with the house mates and has always seemed to believe all he needs is his big brother as that is all he has. so when he sees that his older brother is popular in school, easy to get along with, ‘’cool,’’ seeing all his friends; gennai wants that. so badly. he wants to be like eban so badly;;;;;
*sobs*
i love them...so much *wjeigoajgoeagj*
ANOTHER theory i want to share later is LILITO. GOD there is SO MUCH foreshadowing for him!!! an unbelievable amount that makes me think that maskcover was going to reveal more about lilito’s past, especially since we’re left with ‘’RUDE LILITO’’ on our forever cliff hanger *chokes on sobs* why are they all so dramatic and make me wanna cry. lilito has DEFINITELY had something severely traumatic in the past happen to him and it makes me insanely sad. OMGHG OH MY GOD AND AKAI--- i CANT!!!!
ANYHOW, that is why i’m working on an animatic for the song ‘’Compared Child’’ by Tuyu!!!! I hope to work on it a lot more after i finish my ACTs. SO. yes....
thank you so much for reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you have any opinions or thoughts on my theories let me knoww!!! i don’t look at dms much but i really should because i realized recently that i had a few that have been there for who knows how long and now i’m too scared to respond LMAOJGEIOWAHG sorry
