Confessions (Kokuhaku) Review
When I watch crime documentaries, I always feel the most sympathy for the families of the victims. The perpetrator gets punished and the victim is gone; only the family remains to live on in a shattered world. Confessions unpacks the life of one of these individuals, a teacher named Yuko Moriguchi played by Takako Matsu.
Tumblr media
If you only have time to watch twenty minutes of the film, the first twenty are the most powerful. In them, Yuko Moriguchi tells her students of her impending departure, the untimely death of her daughter, and the boys who killed her. Without any trace of emotion she sets in motion the events of the film, which she is hardly present in at all but totally in control the whole time. Takako Matsu’s stony face and unaffected demeanor gives her amazing strength in the delivery of her speech and had me glued to my screen.  The rest of the cast was very talented as well but without the performance of Matsu the film would be a shell of itself.
Tumblr media
The other most notable actors include Yukito Nishii and Kaoru Fujiwara. They play the two juvenile murderers, Shuuya and Naoki. Each of them in the film had a “Kokuhaku” or confession. In Japan, kokuhaku tends to be a confession of love. It makes it more jarring when the young kids who should be confessing their crushes are confessing their role in the killing of a four year old. Their confessions along with Moriguchi’s and  a classmate Mizuki Kitahara’s (Ai Hashimoto) serve to pull the story along. You get to see the motives of each boy and the ensuing destruction of their lives carefully orchestrated by fate or perhaps their former teacher.
Tumblr media
You’ve probably already guessed this but this movie was not a happy one. It pokes at idea of evil in children, a concept a lot of us like to look away from. It also looks at the idea that murderers are molded by their circumstances, not just born that way.
Despite all this doom and gloom, I recommend this strongly. I found it by searching “Best Japanese Movies” online and I totally agree with this ranking. It got in my head and I won’t be able to forget it anytime soon. It was just so well executed.
Thanks for reading and go check this one out!

Wolf Children (2012) Director - Mamoru Hosoda, Art Direction - Hiroshi Ohno “I won’t ever forget about what happened that morning,” was what my mother said. Those freshly-washed beech leaves, those freshly-washed spiderwebs, and that freshly-washed sky. Each and every single thing was glittering in the sunshine. To my mother, it felt like the entire world had been reborn overnight. Looking back at those twelve years she spent raising us, my mother said they’d passed her by in the blink of an eye, like it was a fairy tale. And she said it with a smile on her face. One of complete satisfaction. And she said it while looking at faraway peak. That smile of hers makes me extremely happy. To this day, my mother still lives peacefully in that mountain home.“

Doesn’t contain significant SPOILERS.
Thechurchillreview strongly recommends Mamoru Hosada's Wolf Children (2012).
In the past I've said there's no such thing as a perfect film. That there's always something that can be done better. Or some facet of a movie will be lacking/not as sturdy as the rest. That essentially no motion picture can be anything close to perfect.
Until I began a load of laundry and saw Wolf Children for the first time. I'm not going to lie, near the start I rolled my eyes and had even considered turning it off. I'm so so so glad I did not.
I watched it in Japanese with English subtitles on DVD.
Wolf Children is the tale of the human being/college student Hana who is left to raise her infant kids Ame and Yuki alone (that possess both human and wolf-like qualities) when their werewolf father she loved dies. With the father being the last of his kind, Hana bravely tries her best to raise her children as they define themselves as individuals while growing up. What Hana goes through and what she's willing to do for Ame and Yuki with a smile upon her face is truly inspiring. Hana is hands-down one of my new favorite fictional characters.
Also, I sincerely appreciated how part of the narrative focused on Ame and Yuki at varying ages versus settling on simply a phase of their life the entirety of Wolf Children. It isn't seen that frequently, you know? So the decision was refreshing and made me feel like I was more familiar with the family onscreen overall.
Wolf Children's musical score by Takagi Masakatsu is superb. The amount of detail in everything is staggering and breathtaking (those forest scenes) to look at. The pacing and execution of the yarn that brings to mind a Hayao Miyazaki creation is spot-on. Although, if one argued that the climax is a tad anticlimatic, it would be difficult to counter said argument. On the other hand, it fits back into the themes of Wolf Children (that are present in Hosada's other works, namely his previous Summer Wars) rather nicely and I'm satisfied with the result picked out.
Like the protagonist Hana with her seemingly ever-present grin, my experience with Wolf Children concluded with a smile upon my face too. Wolf Children has a dual identity. One of those is a brilliant and strange coming-of-age film. The other paints a powerful and believable portrait regarding single parenthood (and why I couldn't ever be a parent: can't take kids in large duration doses and I barely succeeding at taking care of myself! While Hana is a superhero in comparison. At least in my eyes she is.). Highly recommended viewing: if I haven't made that clear already.

4 Baby-faced Stage Actors Who Are Way Too Adorable
When it comes to Japanese stage actors, it seems like everyone has a favorite. Everyone has that one actor that they think is so handsome and so perfect that they would sell their soul for just to be able to see in person for a few brief minutes. On the flip side, everyone also has that one actor that they love to death but in a different way. This is the actor that is too cute for words and must be protected at all costs. These actors usually look much younger than they actually are, and are super precious no matter what role they are taking on.
