Meet the mod

Hello everyone! Here we want to introduce one of our mods who is helping organizing A Place to Call Home: an Otayuri zine so you get to know who’s working behind the scenes of our zine.

Today’s pick is @nuttinonice

Lead Mod - Fan Fiction Submissions Head! Outside of the internet, I edit creative writing professionally, so I’m excited to use my writing skills for a zine!

What do you first think of when you hear the word “domestic”?

Domestic to me is the highest level of comfort in a relationship where everything can be shared and it’s some of my favorite content in fanfiction!

What’s the most appealing aspect of the character Yuri Plisetsky to you?

I love me some edgy boys who turn soft! I love how driven and motivated the character is and I love even more how he seems to only soften up for people who mean something huge to him like his Grandpa and Otabek.

What do you like most about the character Otabek Altin?

Figure skater and a DJ?? How can I lose?

What’s the appeal of them as the ship Otayuri?

I feel like they complete each other. Otabek has the strength and masculinity that Yuri’s always striving to portray and Yuri has the grace and elegance that Otabek struggles so much to portray in his own skating.

When writing fanfiction, what do you think is your specialty?

My specialty is definitely dialogue, domestic content, and light angst (a lot of fighting and making up). I write a lot of fluff and smut too, but my favorite thing is to mix the two.

Yuri rolled his eyes and watched from the side of the ice as Otabek practiced alongside Georgi, Yuuri, and Mila, hopping up on the divider to turn his back to the ice and rest his feet. He was on a quick water break, so of course, Victor had taken the opportunity to come and grill him over his love life, or lack thereof. “That glove thing was like two years ago.”

YOI Hogwarts House Sorting (and accidental deep character analysis)

So I’ve yet to see anybody actually disagree with me, but with all the HP buzz at the moment I really want to back myself up. Warning that this is obviously my own opinion, and whilst I think I’m right, it’s alright to have your own headcanon. (Strap yourselves in because this became a deep character study)

Why I see Yuuri Katsuki as a Slytherin

I have, to be fair, seen this around quite a bit. First and foremost, Yuuri Katsuki is a Slytherin because he hates losing. Not just dislikes it on a healthy level, but becomes devastated (even being the sixth best figure skater in the world threw Yuuri into months of depression). Yuuri is ever only truly happy with gold, which is very, very Slytherin.

Secondly his friendships. Yuuri, in general, surrounds himself with a small group. Although often we see Slytherins grouping together (especially in the Harry Potter books) as a means of survival, in general a Slytherin will only have a few close friends. Trust is very important, as a Slytherin wants to remain on top, the less people who know your secrets, the less there are to potentially use them against you. Slytherins very much value the close relationships they do have, and will extend their loyalties far. You can blame this somewhat on anxiety, but we see it takes Yuuri a lot to trust people that do approach him, ultimately allowing him for form pretty deep relationships, in contrast to the many acquaintances a Gryffindor or Hufflepuff tends to make, with those who he does let in.

Let’s not forget that he does show his cunning side too. It’s not the most obvious of all his traits, but we do see it. An example is the way he reacts when Yurio is insulting him in episode two, asking where Viktor is. Yuuri, in that scene, recognises that Yurio is underestimating him, and leads him to Viktor with the full knowledge that he is right and Yurio is wrong. There’s the fact that Yuuri knows he’s never going to win as the playboy, and pretty cunningly changes his tactic in a way that will give him the edge. Not to mention the episode 10 “take me sight seeing” demand, which, especially with the BD added wink, comes off as a tiny bit manipulative to me. And most importantly, the fact that he performs Viktor’s signature move to get his attention. Not to up his score to ensure a win, but literally because he knows it will get a reaction.

And the clincher for me is his ambition. Because seriously, it takes a certain kind of person to watch the best person in the world at something, and not only pursue that career path, but become obsessed with the idea of becoming just as good. This plays into the fact that he hates losing too, but seriously, even for a Slytherin Yuuri gets a bit extreme with this. (And I do think it’s much different from simple inspiration, otherwise Yuuri would never have fought so hard in the first place)

Why I see Viktor Nikiforov as a Ravenclaw

This seems to be incredibly rare. And whilst I do see the arguments for the other houses more than I would with putting Yuuri in another house, I always think Ravenclaw fit him pretty nicely.

So Ravenclaw are often regarded as ‘book-smart’ which is something Viktor kind of isn’t? He’s pretty ditsy and whimsical in his portrayal. However, one thing that people often forget is that genius isn’t always sitting in a classroom. Viktor is easily a creative genius, more so than any of the other skaters. He choreographs himself, chooses music himself, tells a story himself etc. etc. This is what makes him so untouchable, because nobody else can even come close to this level of inventiveness and creativity (also important Ravenclaw traits). Also individuality, which is another part of the Ravenclaw personality, which is pretty obvious with the way Viktor wants to surprise his audience so much every time.

Not that I want to put a downer on Viktor’s obvious intelligence either. As we saw from the BD release, Viktor’s apartment is filled with books. He speaks three languages fluently, and likely at this point speaks a fourth conversationally (considering he lived in Japan for nearly a year). And whilst we all joke about him splurging on Yuuri, he’s obviously pretty good with money to be as comfortably rich as he is (he even says “I wish we could have gone shopping when the Euro was weaker” which signifies that he cares about that kind of thing). His knowing how to work an audience is also pretty Ravenclaw.

He also does display he has the typical quick tongue of a Ravenclaw too within the series. A particular example that comes to mind is his episode ten conversation with Yuri, when he quickly responds to his insults of Yuuri.

Why I see Yuri Plisetsky as a Slytherin

The reasoning here is clear as Yuri is absolute text book. He’s ambitious, pretty cunning (manages to leave Russia without anybody noticing, starts raising his arms in jumps to secure himself more points), resourceful in that whilst he’s not the best skilled skater, he manages to win anyway. Again, like Yuuri, doesn’t have a large group of friends. He’s also always seemed a bit elitist to me in the way that he treats Yuuri, at least at first. First and foremost, being on top is Yuri’s priority, so whilst he does have his loyalties, they don’t come naturally to him (case and point with the whole Agape drama in episode three).

Why I see Otabek Altin as a Gryffindor

Again, this is pretty textbook. He doesn’t have enough screen time and isn’t characterised complexly enough to tell us otherwise. He’s literally called ‘the hero of Kazakhstan’ which practically screams Gryffindor. We see him act chivalrously on multiple occasions, in saving Yuri from the crowd, or in the manga in not wanting him to come clubbing for moral reasons. Even though he doesn’t have the natural talent of the other skaters, he doesn’t give up. It also seems pretty brave to me that he toured the world from a young age in pursuit of training. If anybody has any doubts, just listen to his monologue during his FS in episode 12, it screams Gryffindor.

Why I see Christophe Giacometti as a Ravenclaw

I think this is a little disputable and feel I could put him in any house, again due to a lack of screen time. However, I would mainly default to Ravenclaw. Though he’s not as creative as Viktor is, he knows his own strength and channels it in everything he does. He has an advantage, and intelligently uses it. We also see him saving his performances for a later peak in the final, which is pretty tactical and intelligent.

Not to mention he kind of gives off a pretty sophisticated air that I’d naturally associate with a Ravenclaw.

Note that I do recognise he certainly has the ambition of a Slytherin. However, I don’t think it’s quite enough on its own.

Why I see JJ Leroy as a Gryffindor

JJ, I think, largely is a Gryffindor as he doesn’t fit into anywhere else massively. However, he displays the negative arrogance often associated with the house, and likes being the centre of attention in that kind of way. I also think he was pretty brave to do so when in his FS at the GPF after falling so hard during the SP (during which he didn’t give up), which takes a lot of nerve.

Why I see Phichit Chulanont as a Hufflepuff

Phichit just kind of feels like he’d belong in Hufflepuff to be honest. Although he’s obviously ambitious, the rest of his personality cancels it out. It never really feels like personal success with Phichit, though, always more like he’s doing it for the sake of his country. His huge group of friends and relationships also scream Hufflepuff; he’s friendly and accepting. And regardless of not speaking to Yuuri for months, he keeps that loyalty and talks to him like no time has actually passed.

sounds like confirmation bias to me?

but look, i’m not gonna go into that. i stand by what i said about their potential being abstract, like the potential of a blank sheet of paper. you don’t stan the paper, you stan what’s done with/on it.

what stands out to me about both plisetsky and leroy is that their outlines are somewhat solid. we were given more than just a basic idea of who they are, so when we discuss potential involving these characters, it’s less abstract.

i can say with some certainty that despite his abrasive behavior, plisetsky’s neither a loner nor a misanthrope. (see his decision to keeep in touch with yuuko and her daughters, cooking for his coaches, his relationship with his grandfather and altin in particular. he calls mila ‘a hag’ but lets her tease him and treat him like the annoying little brother that he is.)

he’s a rude, impetuous, ambitious, ultracompetitive 15/16 yo with no ppl skills or natural charisma (the sort of charisma leroy has, for example) or inbuilt support network (again, like leroy - and katsuki) to help balance those traits out.

he’s hardworking, but that’s arguably a recent development (required by transitioning from juniors to elite).

he’s under pressure to follow on the footsteps of a living legend, but based on some of his lines to and regarding said living legend, he doesn’t want to be the next ___, he wants to be the one and only yuri plisetsky.

he’s passionate about FS. he’s a precocious talent who learned to perform some fancy tricks at elite level for an audience and he looks like a pretty disney princess (though he personally DISLIKES that image). these are his trump cards. he’s literally skating through life exploring them to the max while knowing that these trump cards have a shelf life.

my point? i didn’t have to make any leaps, huge or small, to write this. with the exception of leroy, i wouldn’t feel comfortable writing similar paragraphs about the inner workings of any of the named satellite skaters based on onscreen evidence. even altin. or victor, for that, matter despite the ridiculously large screen time devoted to him. i could extrapolate based on crumbs, yes. but they’re crumbs! they could be swept under a rug on a whim, man. details about plisetsky’s family life were.

Otabek wakes up when a cat (he can’t tell which one with his eyes still closed) stucks a paw between his ribs, trying to find more comfortable spot to nap on. Otabek doesn’t understand why the cats choose to sleep on top of him when there’s free space on the foot of the bed, and the cats have their own, huge bed in the living room. Otabek forces his eyes open, a strip of bright morning sun coming through between the curtains almost blinding him, and frowns at the ball of light brown fur sleeping on his chest. He runs his hand through the soft fur and feels the Siberian cat purr under his touch.

”Jongie, you’re heavy,” he tells the cat, who just purrs loudly and rolls on his back to get Otabek pet his stomach instead. He keeps stroking the cat and throws his other arm over his eyes, trying to block the sunlight and make himself fall back asleep. While swaying on the edge of consciousness and sleep Otabek makes a mental note on checking have the cats learned how to open doors because he could swear he closed the bedroom door behind them the night before. A soft sound of paws against the wooden floor reaches Otabek’s ears, and he strengthens himself for the upcoming impact that comes after a short silence: the Russian Blue lands on his legs, climbs over them with gracious steps and curls next to Otabek’s head. An unintelligible whine comes from the other side of the cat and Otabek smirks at the sound. ”Niko, you fatty, move,” Yuri says, his voice heavy with sleep. Otabek blinks his eyes open and watches how the blond he’s sharing the bed with pokes the silver cat laying between them, getting an unamused stare thrown at his direction before the cat gets on his feet and settles himself on the small empty space between his owners’ bodies. ”Good morning.” ”I don’t know is there anything good in getting a face full of cat for the first thing in the morning, but sure,” Yuri says, yawns and shifts on the bed so he’s facing Otabek. His long, blond hair spreads on the pillow under his head and Otabek catches a painfully apparent print of his own teeth on the pale skin of Yuri’s neck. He tries not to think of the sweet sounds that filled the bedroom the night before, brushing a wild lock of hair behind Yuri’s ear instead. ”You let the cats in after I had fallen asleep, didn’t you?” A very light blush spreads on Yuri’s face but he doesn’t turn his eyes away, only smiles in a way that can only be read as apologetic. ”They were crying and my heart couldn’t take it, Beka. They sounded so sad and miserable,” Yuri says, takes Otabek’s hand and presses his lips against the back of it. ”You know how I am when it comes to them.” ”Yeah, weak.” ”Loving, you jerk!” Yuri fakes a pout and Otabek laughs, getting an annoyed look from Jongie who is still laying on his chest, definitely not pleased that his owners are interrupting his morning nap. Yuri rolls his eyes to the cat and laces his fingers with Otabek’s, tapping his fingertips against the other man’s knuckles. The bedroom falls quiet, muffled sounds of late morning traffic reaching them every now and then from the other side of the window. Yuri has closed his eyes but Otabek knows he isn’t sleeping, at least not yet – he shifts and tangles his legs with Otabek’s own under the covers, making Niko meow in frustration and move to the foot of the bed, curling up in a ball there. Jongie follows Niko’s struggles with a small tilt of his head, stretches and decides to join his friend, making sure to walk on top of the two men as much as possible on his way. Otabek huffs out a small laugh at their pets’ antics and, now finally cat-free, turns on his side. His eyelids feel heavy even though it’s not that early anymore and he blinks slowly, focusing on the man next to him. Yuri breaths steadily, dark and long eyelashes spread against his pale skin and mouth slightly open. Otabek wants to reach out and kiss him but on the other hand he doesn’t often get a chance to just look at Yuri like this, so peaceful and beautiful. Every single human in the world knows Yuri Plisetsky is beautiful but Otabek is the only one to see him like this, celestial and vulnerable, and there’s a tug in Otabek’s chest when he realizes how lucky he is. A cat stretching with a high-pitched whine snaps Otabek back to reality from his thoughts and he bites the inside of his cheek, giving a light squeeze to the hand on his own. Yuri lets out an asking noise but refuses to open his eyes. ”Coffee?” ”Hmm, in a second. Don’t go yet,” the blond pleads, voice sleepy, and closes the small gap between their bodies. He buries his face on the nape of Otabek’s neck and throws his other arm over his waist, fingertips brushing the strip of skin revealed by the taller man’s ridden up T-shirt. Otabek feels Yuri’s content sigh against his neck and he smiles, placing his chin on top of the other man’s head. He runs his fingers through the long hair, gently untangling the small knots he comes across. ”I love you,” Otabek mumbles against Yuri’s hair and kisses the crown of his head. He feels how Yuri wraps his fingers around the back of his T-shirt and tries to pull him closer even though they’re already close enough to feel each other’s heartbeats. Otabek isn’t usually the one to suddenly voice out his affection, but he knows Yuri appreciates the words despite already knowing about his feelings. ”I love you, too,” Yuri says and places a kiss on Otabek’s jaw, mostly because he can’t reach his cheek or lips. He opens his eyes slowly, a mix of blue and green staring up at Otabek, and the older man knows he could spend hours after hours just like that, sharing the bed with the love of his life and a pair of cats while the rest of the world keeps on going. Otabek also knows that won’t be possible so he closes his eyes and treasures the moment, the feeling of Yuri’s heart beating in a rhythm with his own, and allows himself drift back to sleep.

Otayuri Week 2017 Day 2: Social Media/Celebrations (FaceTime, Skype, Youtube, Instagram)

A/N: Sequel to “now i gotta wash my mouth out with soap”~! Also featuring an Original Female Character.

His mind is a cosmic chaos of emotions. Not even skating himself to the death is helping him.

As the past six months ran by, his communication with his labeled “bestie” remained ambiguously normal. They talk on Skype as they usually do, always ranging from their skating routines to their daily nonsense (cats, weather, etc.). And it was perfectly normal. They barely engaged a conversation on love, Mila, or… the Accident (because it totally was; come on, he wasn’t thinking straight.) and that is totally normal in their imaginary rule book. Even before said fiasco, they never really took the time to indulge on that topic, merely in passing (“who was your first kiss”, “who was the worst partner”, “the most embarrassing moment when you dated”). So yea. Totally mundane and ordinary.

Except it wasn’t okay. It took all his strength not to broach on any topic. It would be weird and awkward. Awkweird. It was not the line friends cross and while he did cross the line by an inch, he was just pushed back to his side of the line where he initially belonged. Beka, being casual and everything, did not initiate nor push him about it. He merely kept his usual composure, just how the way things were.

And it only fueled his turmoil. It doesn’t help that his relationship with Mila grew fragile. A few days after he left, she had this.. look. There was no smile this time but there was something on her expression that she knew something.. that somehow it was his fault that he fucked up their relationship.

Through this chaos, anger at himself became his drive in training. But it wasn’t only anger, there was a whole icing of anguish spread on top. He stretched his limits, to the brink of his own sanity, almost tearing his body from limb to limb. To those who noticed said nothing, merely watching from afar and only intervening when he came close to passing out.

And said intervention came to the rescue. She was a friend of his from overseas who lived with katsudon and old man. Her parents and Katstudon’s parents go way back and decided to ship her here in Russia for a mini vacation.

[21:15] what makes it worse is mila hasn’t really talked to me..

[21:17] and i’m too distracted in coming up with any ideas for my theme and song music..

[21:18] and beka’s.. Beka’s okay. We’re cool. We talk the usual shit.

Tine [21:19] but you’re not okay.

Tine [21:21] Hm.

[21:22] spill it woman, i don’t have all night for this

Tine [21:23] What say you and I do a little music jam? Make a Youtube account?

Tine [21:25] For a stress reliever, dumbass. You can sing. I can sing. We both can play the guitar and we can put it up on Youtube.. Plus we can search for some music you might like that’s beyond classical. It’s a win-win for everyone.

[21:28] what do u get out of this?

Tine [21:30] To do something for shits and giggles. Something nice for my spare time.

True to heart, they went music scavenging as planned on the days he finished his training. That meant his time with his friend from overseas overlapped with his Skyping time with Otabek. He introduced the two one evening and it went slightly awkward, seeing as they barely have anything in common except for maybe some literature, but that was only in passing. She and Yuri decided to keep the music project a secret, with the viable excuse of her being there was to be watched over (”Hey, I’m older than you, you know” “You don’t act like it”). Otabek didn’t mind of course. They still kept their conversations as mundane as they make it while Tine sat beside him mostly in silence, sometimes listening, sometimes reading some shit (”Seriously, just pretend I don’t exist; i don’t usually wanna talk” she laughed). It was an upgraded routine for all of them and no one seemed to mind one bit.

He wasn’t exactly sure how she managed to rope him into this. While yes they both have the skills to do so, he was hesitant in trying her songs. Most of them were dark, creepy and downright strange. She also had a wide variety of options. There was an equal proportion of hip hop, grunge, metal, acoustic, with a few jazz and blues combined. Beka helped as well, seeing he is a DJ and has encountered most of the music she presented. However, he never truly found out what Yuri needed for, only for some new music to skate for.

(Sometimes, he can feel his best friend has an inkling of what they were up to, but that’s just paranoia).

Fortunately, it only took two weeks for them to find a song they both liked.

They only posted one video yet they were already famous. His phone exploded with notifications filled with likes, dislikes and comments. Yakov didn’t seem care, as long as he kept on practicing his usual routines. Mila started talking to him again, with the help of Tin. He introduced them three days after he uploaded their video. One look from Mila and she was already adored by the older skater (”YURI SHE’S SO ADORABLE!!!”). They now go out for coffee breaks.

And Otabek.. Beka was impressed. Still is. After he found out the video, they finally found another topic that piqued their interest: music.

[17:02] a couple of years back, tine’s first visit in russia. We had a couple of gigs together, but this is the first time we ever posted a song that we actually like.

Beka [17:03] You had a lot of disagreements before?

[17:04] pfft, more like full-blown arguments. her song choices can be a little creepy

Since then, there conversations prolonged and gradually, contentment filled his emotions more than his own anguish over unrequited affections. This upgraded their routine and level of closeness further and while it was not what his other part of himself had hoped, it was enough for him to have that familiar comfort of talking to him again.

This music project isn’t so bad after all.

The internet is now speculating on said posts. It had only been three covers of the same artist and people are already assuming that therein lies a deeper intentions that the said skater was hiding. Even the people around him were starting to wonder, with the stupid pig and stupid old man barraging him with hugs, questioning his mental well-being or if he was moping for someone. Mila even singled him out once or twice over the week, not-so-subtley prying for answer. Otabek was speculative (his best friend is too smart for his own good) but only mentioned in passing. Yuri could only keep up with the excuse to their covers as Tine being an avid fan.

And that was true.

Only, this was an outlet; a healthy outlet to convey his raging emotions. Little did he care that Otabek was oblivious to their purpose now. In a way, it’s pouring his intentions in guise of a singer’s spontaneity (because of this, he was glad that he had Tine singing with him; she’s a really good use for an excuse).

He admittedly grew an appreciation for the artist, how much skill and talent was shown through the way she writes them, and the way she sang each of her songs.

To that extent, it was already giving him ideas for his music and theme for the upcoming competition.

God, he is such a sap.

Dear Chocolatier,

Thank you for taking the time to create something for me! I really appreciate it. Below I’ve included some of my general likes and dislikes, as well as a few prompts and suggestions for each of my requested fandoms. Don’t feel like you have to stick with anything I say other than the DNWs, I just wanted to provide some guides as to the kinds of things I like and some inspiration if you need it. But if you have another idea that’s completely different, go for it!

General Dislikes / Do Not Wants: infidelity, eye trauma, hand/finger trauma, character bashing, breakup/divorce of requested pairings, (non-canonical) character death, pregnancy, sad endings

I’ve recently fallen down the rabbit hole into this fandom and am having a fantastic time exploring the back-catalog of works folks have created. Since I’m still pretty new, I don’t have a ton of ideas, but I had to include it on my requests because I just love these two. Here are some prompts I did come up with:

- An alternate first meeting AU. Did Jack and Bitty meet somewhere else before they met at Samwell, or is it a total AU where they never met at Samwell and ended up meeting some other way?

- Bitty the figure skater. Something from his past, looking at his time as a competitive figure skater? Does Bitty take up recreational figure skating after he graduates? Does he combine his figure skating background and his love of music to become a renowned skating choreographer?

Yuri!!! on Ice

Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov, Victor Nikiforov & Yuri Plisetsky, Katsuki Yuuri & Yuri Plisetsky, Katsuki Yuuri & Viktor Nikiforov & Yuri Plisetsky

I love all of these characters, and I love the weird, funny little found family dynamic they have going on. If you want to include any of the other characters who would conceivably fit into the family type of story (the Katsukis, the Nishigoris, the other Russian skaters, Yakov and Lilia) I have no objections to any of them being included. Basically, I’d just love something that explores the family dynamic between Yuuri, Yuri, and Viktor (or any combination thereof). Maybe one or two of them helping the third after a failure, or a bad day. Or something set during a return visit to Hasetsu. Or during a competition, and about how they balance being fierce competitors with being caring friends.

Alternatively, if you want to focus just on the romantic relationship between Viktor and Yuuri, I’d love that too. I’m particularly fond of alternate first meeting AUs in this fandom. Did they become friends when Yuuri was still in Juniors/just starting on the Senior circuit? Did they meet earlier in the competition at the Sochi GPF? There are a lot of options here.

A fandom specific DNW: homophobia.

Vorkosigan Saga

Aral Vorkosigan/Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, Simon Illyan & Aral Vorkosigan

There’s a huge gap between the end of Barrayar and the beginning of The Warrior’s Apprentice, and there’s a lot of plot to be explored there. The relationships between Aral, Cordelia, and Simon are super interesting, both on a personal level – they are each complex and very different people – and there is the backdrop of all the political stuff going on. From the cleanup after the pretendership, the stability of the regency, Gregor, Miles, and just day to day government bureaucracy, there is a lot going on in the lives of these characters, and I think it would be really interesting to explore their relationships in the context of the major events they’re in the middle of.
