Capitol Centre
In 1927, a businessman from Sturgeon Falls purchased the property at 150 Main Street East in North Bay to build a theatre. During construction he went bankrupt and sold his interests to the Famous Players of Canada Corporation. Famous Players opened the doors to the new Capitol Theatre on June 1, 1929 for the screening of In Old Arizona, the first Fox Pictures “talkie” motion picture (movies with sound) of its kind. This brand new theatre had 1455 seats, state-of-the-art technology, elaborate decorative touches, and was referred to as a “palace of splendour.” It wasn’t the only theatre downtown; there was the Bay (Club 151), the Odeon (Northern Tikes), the Crystal Palace (next to Guardian Drugs), and the Royal (Royal Office Suites) – but the Capitol was the grandest of them all and is the only one left open today.
Tumblr media
It was in the offices of the Capitol Theatre that Roy Thomson, Lord Thomson of Fleet, started his media empire with the opening of his (and Northern Ontario’s) first radio station CFCH on March 3, 1931 – this later became CKAT. It was in the Capitol Theatre that the Dionne Quints enjoyed many Friday night movies when they could get away from their celebrity lives. The Capitol stood tall through the Great Depression and the Second World War, bringing laughter and plenty of wartime films like All Quiet on the Western Front to North Bay and area audiences. During wartime, patrons could purchase tickets with a scrap of metal from home (pipes, jewellery, cookware, cutlery, etc). This metal was melted down and used to produce munitions for the war effort.
Tumblr media
In the 1970s, an organization called North Bay Theatre and Arts Community Centre (TACC) was formed with the goal of establishing an art centre to house all arts-related endeavours within the city and surrounding district. At the time, North Bay had finally developed the Golden Mile area of the Lake Nipissing waterfront, had built arenas and parks throughout the city, and the final missing piece was to have a local performance hall and art gallery. When Famous Players announced in the 1980s that they wanted to convert the Capitol into smaller cinemas, TACC decided that the Capitol was too wonderful to get chopped up into small rooms, and that it could be the perfect facility for their dream arts centre. Since its reopening in 1987 the Capitol Centre and the WKP Kennedy Gallery has seen many great artists Canadian and international, both cherished celebrities and beloved locals like Johnny Cash, Phyllis Diller, Lynn Johnston, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison, Jack Klugman, Blue Rodeo, Canada’s Group of Seven, The Barenaked Ladies, Graham Nash, Ed Eng, Jann Arden, Tom Cochrane, and many more. The Capitol truly is your home for arts and entertainment.

Towie star Liam Gatsby arrives for Mike Thalassitiss funeral
Emotional reality TV stars came together today together to say their final goodbyes to Love Island star Mike Thalassitis.
The former footballer and reality TV star was found hanged in a park near his home in Edmonton, north London on March 15 at the age of just 26.
Mike was said to be suffering from depression and financial troubles, and struggling to come to terms with the loss of his beloved grandmother, who had passed away days earlier.
Dozens of mourners gathered outside Christ Church in Southgate, north London, where the star is being laid to rest.
Stars at the poignant service include Amber Davies, Montana Brown, Jonny Mitchell, Jamie Jewitt and Camilla Thurlow, who appeared on the 2017 series of Love Island with Mike, alongside the host of the ITV2 show, Caroline Flack.
Mourners stopped to pay their respects to Mike’s older brother Nick, who often shared pictures of their close-knit family on social media.
Mike’s friend and fellow Love Island star Montana Brown, who was visibly distraught as she made her way into the church, posted an emotional tribute on Instagram this morning reading: ‘Wished today would never come’.
The order of service featured the touching words, ‘Do not stand at my grave and weep,’ from the 1932 poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye, alongside photos of Mike as a baby and pictures taken during his football career.

Others at the private service this afternoon include footballer Jamie Vardy’s wife Rebekah and cast members from The Only Way Is Essex, Liam ‘Gatsby’ Blackwell, Shelby Tribble and Mario Falcone, who walked in with Mike’s manager, Dave Reed.
And stars of the 2018 series Zara McDermott, Ellie Brown, Alexandra Cane and Samira Mighty also joined the congregation, alongside Mike’s rumoured former girlfriend Ellie O’Donnell.
Mike’s beloved 94-year-old grandmother on his father’s side passed away days before his death, shortly after he had moved in with her to become her full-time carer.
The 26-year-old, who hailed from a Cypriot family, was said to be devastated by her loss. The news of his death also came just months after his best friend Danny Cutts passed away.
Floral wreathes surrounding Mike’s silver coffins spelled out the words ‘brother’, ‘son’ and ‘Mike’ and music played during the service included tracks by Phil Collins and Cat Stevens as well as Coldplay’s Fix You, and The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics.
Mike’s family requested that donations should be made to mental health charity CALM in his memory.
Born in Edmonton in 1993, the former League One footballer had enjoyed a successful playing career before appearing on season three of ITV’s Love Island in 2017.
He rose to fame for his exploits in the villa and had viewers in stitches with his antics before he went on to search for love again in E4’s Celebs Go Dating.
Mike played football for Stevenage, Ebbsfleet United, Boreham Wood, St Albans City, Margate, Hemel Hempstead Town, Chelmsford and Welling United.
He had been due to open a restaurant named The Skillet, before he died. His friend and business partner Scott Neilson confirmed he would press ahead with the opening despite the tragedy because, ‘it was what Mike would’ve wanted’.
Friends and family members stopped to pay their respects to the star’s brother Nick as the funeral procession arrived in north London

A private ambulance turned up at the church in north London ahead of the funeral
Mr Neilson said after the tragedy: ‘Mike would’ve wanted this cafe to open, he spent everyday for the past couple of months working hard to make this place a success so we are pulling together to get this ready for everyone and especially for Mike.’
The Reverend Dr Chrichton Limbert told the congregation today: ‘On behalf of everyone at Christ Church, Southgate, I extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to Mike’s family and friends, and all those affected by his tragic death.
‘I hope that by coming together this afternoon, those who knew and lived Mike can find some comfort and support at this incredibly difficult time.
‘The family have requested that the service be carried out in private, and we would ask that the media respect their wishes accordingly.’
The star’s ex-girlfriend Megan McKenna, meanwhile, eschewed the service after jetting out of the country to fly to Nashville earlier this week ‘to honour work commitments.’
The reality star, 26, was seen at London’s Heathrow airport on Tuesday.
Mike pictured at the O2 arena earlier this year alongside Lizzie Cundy and Rebekah Vardy
This was the last photo Mike posted on Instagram, on March 5 – days before he died
The former League One footballer had enjoyed a successful playing career before appearing on season three of ITV’s Love Island in 2017 (pictured)
Mike and Megan dated on and off throughout 2018, but ended their relationship last August.
Fellow Love Island star Sophie Gradon, 32, who appeared on season two of the reality show in 2016, was found dead in June last year.
After their deaths, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said reality TV shows have a duty to care for contestants after they become famous.

Love Island’s Zara McDermott opens up on revenge porn HELL
http://www.internetunleashed.co.uk/?p=33785 Love Island’s Zara McDermott opens up on revenge porn HELL - http://www.internetunleashed.co.uk/?p=33785 Zara McDermott has spoken out about her teenage nudes leak [Instagram/Zara McDermott] Zara McDermott  has revealed that she was excluded from school at the age of 14 after becoming a victim of revenge porn. The Love Island star, now 21, has opened up on her ordeal in a radio interview with Dan Wootton. Speaking on Dan’s talkRADIO show, Adam Collard’s girlfriend announced that she sent nude photos to a boy who then spread them around her school, opening her up to two years of bullying. Zara was bullied for two years following the leak [Instagram/Zara McDermott] The ITV2 babe, who recently hit out at trolls, said: “It was just a boy in school I liked. I was silly, naïve. It was almost a way for me to get attention.  “I was never the pretty one in school, I was always one of the average girls and I thought this was a way of me to get attention. “He sent them around the school. I was bullied for two years. I lost all my friends. They excluded me. Nothing happened to him.” Some people have commented that Zara McDermott looks different in her Instagram pictures to real life  [Instagram ] Love Island's Zara McDermott's sexiest Instagram pictures – from racy selfies to sizzling bikini pictures The beauty was excluded from school for sending the raunchy photos [Instagram/Zara McDermott] She fell victim to a nudes leak again once inside the villa [Antonio Salgado] Touching on the nude photos leak that she was embroiled in during her time in the villa, Zara went on to say: “I feel like what happened back then and now seven years on there’s been such a shift because now I’m seen as the victim whereas back then I was almost the perpetrator. I was the one in the wrong. “There were pictures of girls flying around everywhere. You’d get them broadcasted to you. It was a really common thing back then. But I was one of the first girls to do it. So I really got it. “I think the reason I got so badly bullied was because of the content of the image was incredibly explicit. There was a bit of pressure for me to do it. There was a hell of a lot of pressure.” Zara met boyfriend Adam Collard on Love Island [Instagram/Adam Collard] Speaking more about the Love Island nudes leak, which also saw Laura Anderson and Megan Barton Hanson fall victim, Zara said: “I was seeing someone who I was very serious about. It was someone who had never really treated me in that way before. I’ve been in relationships and this guy absolutely swept me off my feet. “I feel like nowadays there’s a new level in a relationship and there’s a virtual level that tends to get explored. And the exchanging of pictures is so common. He did ask me [to send them] but it was a mutual thing. “I expected it from this boy. He just one day turned around and said, ‘I don’t want to speak to you ever again’. Out of the blue. I never found out why. And this was about two months before I was going out on Love Island. And I thought if there’s anyone that’s going to leak anything it’s going to be him.” window.fbAsyncInit = function () { FB.init({ appId: '543301995758445', xfbml: true, version: 'v2.8' }); }; (function (d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) { return; } js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "http://connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Source link

Love Island: What’s the big deal? – BBC News
Image copyright ITV
Image caption Love Island contestants (l-r) Jessica, Marcel, Olivia, Dominic and Amber are hoping to find romance this year
Falling in love isn’t easy – let alone falling in love on national television.
But that’s what 13 “sexy singletons” are hoping to do on Love Island, which has just begun its third series on ITV2.
If you’ve never seen it before, the premise is to couple up and convince the public to keep you on the island in order to win 50,000 – all while trying to find your perfect match.
Think Big Brother but with board shorts, bikinis and more under-the-sheets shenanigans than you can shake a stick at, as the couples chop and change throughout the series.
If you have seen it before, it’s likely to be one of your guilty pleasure programmes you’ve agreed to dedicate the next seven weeks of your life to. Or you may throw it in your trash TV basket.
Image copyright ITV
Image caption Caroline Flack presents the rebooted version of the reality show
You may remember Love Island in its previous life as Celebrity Love Island, which ran from 2005-06 and featured the likes of Jayne Middlemiss, Callum Best and Strictly Come Dancing’s Brendan Cole trying to find love.
It was revived two years ago with average Joes taking part and was met with relatively modest success, watched by an average of 595,000 people – but still a hit for ITV2.
Last year it exploded, with an average of 1.4 million fans tuning in daily to watch. The show became must-see viewing amongst mainly female (67.4%) viewers and under 35s (63.6%).
Scheduled against Channel 5’s Big Brother, about 1.2 million people are currently tuning into the sunny island escapes in Mallorca – 200,000 more than those watching the action in rainy Borehamwood.
So what’s all the fuss about?
Who are the contestants?
Predominantly aged 20-23 – with the oldest a positively ancient 31 – this year’s contestants have clearly been cast for today’s social media and millennial audience.
They all have very active Instagram pages (which was likely a pre-requisite to appear), but here are a few that stand out.
Image copyright ITV
Executive assistant Chloe, 22, says she’s come on the programme “looking for the love of my life”.
Image copyright ITV
If you’re a fan of Noughties pop you might recognise Marcel, who used to be in Blazin’ Squad – but more on him later.
Image copyright ITV
Oil rig worker Sam, 21, introduced himself by saying: “I pull birds for a living.”
Image copyright ITV
But don’t think it’s all glamour models and wannabe celebrities – 27-year-old Camilla works in explosive ordnance disposal, going into countries after conflicts and getting rid of landmines so they don’t injure civilians. Oh, and she apparently dated Prince Harry.
The memes
The Twitter commentary that accompanies each episode is of epic proportions, which gives viewers all the more reason to watch it live to be part of the conversation.
#LoveIsland trended every night in its first week, with viewers keen to share their views on the villa’s antics.
The first episode was full of memes on how Marcel was trying to keep his Blazin’ Squad past a secret, but then told a bunch of his housemates. Unfortunately as the group’s first hit was in 2002 and most of the contestants are in their early 20s, Marcel’s claim to fame was met with mostly tumbleweed.
Image copyright Twitter
After the third episode there was a lot of debate over whether Camilla was too “boring” because she failed to kiss or fall in love with anyone in the first 48 hours.

Controversies
Viewers this year will be hoping for a similar sort of scandal that last year’s series produced.
Miss Great Britain Zara Holland lost her crown after scenes showing her performing a sex act with a fellow contestant were screened.
Image copyright ITV
Miss GB organisers said they couldn’t promote her “as a positive role model moving forward”, adding she “simply did not uphold the responsibility expected of the title”.
But it all happened without the model knowing as she was in the villa without access to the outside world. A week later she quit the show after her mother fell ill.
The show attracted further controversy after it broadcast islanders Emma-Jane Woodham and Terry Walsh having sex 10 minutes after the watershed.
Seven people complained to Ofcom, but the watchdog cleared ITV2, saying the broadcaster had given viewers enough warning.
Life after Love Island
Like most reality TV shows these days, contestants hope their appearance will be a launch pad for other things.
For some, it’s led to… more reality TV.

Series one’s Jon Clark and series 2 winners Cara De La Hoyde and Nathan Massey (pictured above) have appeared in The Only Way Is Essex, and fellow series contestant Rykard Jenkins moved on to Ibiza Weekender. First series hopefuls Josh Ritchie went on to star in Ex On the Beach.
But there have been other more lucrative successes – last year’s runner-up Olivia Buckland launched her own clothing range earlier this year.
She also secured a number of endorsement deals with her Love Island partner, Alex Bowen, including Christmas pudding flavoured condoms.
And they do find love
Yes they do apparently, although most haven’t.
Despite promising to stay together forever on the show, Cara and Nathan managed to last a year before splitting up in April. Last month Cara announced she was pregnant with Nathan’s baby, but they would not be reuniting.

More happily, Olivia and Alex announced their engagement after a New Year’s Eve proposal and are set to get married next summer.
Fellow series two couple Scott (brother of Emmerdale star Adam) Thomas and Kady McDermott are still going strong, living together in Manchester.
And there has also been the first Love Island baby this year – after 2016 contestants Cally Jane Beech and Luis Morrison welcomed baby Vienna in May.

The semi professional footballer’s geography-based dumping justification was put under the spotlight during his heart to heart with the professional surfer. Jack, who lives in Essex, didn’t seem dissuaded by the fact stunning blonde Laura lives overseas, prompting fans to accuse him of lying to his former show partner, Scottish Laura, 29. After dumping the air hostess he cited both her age and where she lived as factors going against them. Love Island: Laura Crane's confession she lives partly in Portugal didn't deter Jack [ITV2] As they enjoyed their first beach date he mused: “Obviously you spend a lot of time in Portugal,” to which she replied: “I lived there in 2013 for a year, and then I was living in Australia for a few months, and then Bali for almost two years. “That was just way too far away from mum and dad. Hankering after an invite Jack said: “I have never been to Portugal but I’ve been to Spain and I’ve been to Italy.” Giggling, she replied: “I will show you around my town,” before they set plans in place. window.fbAsyncInit = function () { FB.init({ appId: '543301995758445', xfbml: true, version: 'v2.8' }); }; (function (d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) { return; } js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "http://connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Source link
