Skin Colour
Hi again! I am so sorry for giving you guys a horribly written question.
First, aliens did not interfere with genetics anything more advanced than today. They interfered only with advancement of civilisation and knowledge.
Secondly, the generations part. To summarise:
Alien planet year 0 = technology and human’s knowledge equal to Earth 150000 BC
Alien planet year 3500 (after 50 generations) = technology and inhabitant’s knowledge equal to Earth 2000 AD (after 3000 generations)
On Earth, dark skinned humans slowly moved north/south for thousands of generations and skin turned lighter. It was impossible to see a light skin at the equator and dark skin way up north/south until people learned technology to travel fast enough to spread.
On my alien world, x skin inhabitants had learned the technology to travel fast and went far north/south way way earlier than Earth. They’d keep their x skin right? Not enough generations to slowly adapt to another colour.
Is my thinking correct? That in my alien world that’s how skin colour would work? Maybe I’m thinking only about melanin, and it only works this way. But say they had grey skin, or blue skin.
Thus, perhaps I need to completely drop melanin and think something way different? I have no real idea how animal skin colour works.. but on Earth we do not get dark skinned animals at the equator and light skinned animals far north/south. Who says my I can’t create my species that way too, just because I’m making humanoid species.
--
This is a follow up to: https://script-a-world.tumblr.com/post/185522126817/hi-so-human-skin-colour-evolved-over-hundreds-of
Tex: Ah, that makes much more sense, thank you for the clarification, and don’t worry about coming back to do that!
Today, humans can meddle quite a bit with genetics - while CRISPR-Cas9 is rife with errors (ResearchGate), the newly-discovered CRISPR-associated transposase (CAST) technique is much more stable and can insert entirely custom genes into DNA (Phys.org), so the genes behind melanogenesis - among probably every other gene in existence - is perfectly able to be edited by your humanoid species with very little fuss.
The 50 generations thing is still a sticking point, unfortunately. Why are these generations so comparatively condensed compared to a human 3,000 generations? What makes these generations so compressed - is it strictly technological development (tools, textiles, etc), is it strictly genetic (epigenetic factors), or a mix of both?
How fast is fast travel? @writersblockbuster made an excellent post on calculating travel times, and she has estimated that a human “could manage almost 25 miles (40 km) in 8 hours” at walking speed depending upon a variety of factors. Provided that only eight hours is taken per 24-hour period to walk at this pace, uninterrupted by other factors, then it would take a human about 40 days to traverse 1,000mi/1,600km. Where does your method of transportation fall in comparison to that?
Melanin is the product of what is, quite typically for genetics, a convoluted process. It’s produced by melanosomes, which are produced by melanocytes, which are produced by neural crest melanoblasts - so all of this begins in the brain! There’s a lot of players in the body that make sure melanocytes are delivered to places like the epidermis, and melanin in epidermal cells seems to primarily exist as protection against both UVA and UVB radiation. (Citations 1-5)
Now, there are two main types of melanin, of which humans have both (PDF): eumelanin and pheomelanin. The range for these would be the typical range of human natural hair colors. Plants may produce biological pigments which refract all but which they reflect (i.e. a blue flower absorbs all wavelengths except for that particular blue, which is what is refracted back; WebExhibits), but animals are unable to produce the more “exotic” colors in their epidermis and must rely on either their diet or structural coloration (such as the iridescence in some feathers), instead (WebExhibits). A notable exception to this would be the Ayam Cemani chicken from Indonesia (Wikipedia).
Exposure to UV radiation does not come strictly from the sun - freshly-fallen snow can reflect up to 80% of UV radiation and can cause photokeratitis (Wikipedia). Polar bears have black skin, and only look white because their hair strands are hollow and refract light back that looks white (World Wildlife Fund). Zebras, too, have black skin (Wikipedia), and currently I’m presuming that it’s for much the same reason as polar bears.
Eumelanin, at least in hair, can produce a grey color, though I’m uncertain how a grey skin color would come about without the inherent design of structural coloration within the epidermis to diffuse… probably eumelanin, I think, into what could be perceived as grey.
Blue is rare in nature (YouTube), but if structural color doesn’t appeal to you, then the idea of cyanomelanin for skin and hair has been discussed in such places as Reddit and Zompist’s Almeopedia - there’s also a slim possibility of copper oxyanions or other copper compounds (disclaimer that biochemistry isn’t my strong suit, and that an actual biochemist would be a better reference on this). If a biological blue pigment is the case, then the visible light spectrum for your planet might also need to be shifted in order to accommodate this (PDF).
Melanin is a good foundation for your idea, but you’ll need to rip out the specifics of melanogenesis and determine what the pigment synthesis pathways would be that would create grey or blue skin.
My particular vote is to utilize both structural color and biological pigmentation; a blue base that may or may not be diffused by multiple layers in the epidermis, so you can get a grey skin color if that’s more preferred than blue, would be the most feasible method that would be genuinely alien to human physiology. Something closer would be a base layer of eumelanin-rich epidermis that has some upper layer of structural blue (possibly the foam-based one mentioned in the YouTube video) that could be diffused out with an extra layer to get you a type of grey.
But to bring back to one of your original questions - no, 50 generations is most likely not enough time for your species to naturally adapt to a different skin color, however many ways there are to make grey or blue aliens.

College School Supplies + Zero Waste Alternatives
I use my laptop to take notes in 90% of my classes but there are some debates on whether the energy use to power electronics is really more eco friendly than using recycled products and then recycling them again at the end of their lives. So if possible, I'll provide many options so you can choose the best for you and your lifestyle. Keep in mind that it is always best to use items you already have, someone you know is thinking of throwing away, or that you find at a thrift store. It's always best to reuse something than it is to buy something new. Also the links are just to give an idea of how the products look like but I'm sure you can find them in other places + local stores.
Backpack
Use an old one. If it's not your style anymore, how about dying it or adding patches or something?
If it's not salvageable, maybe one a friend/family member doesn't need anymore?
Thrift Shop
If you must buy one:
A cotton or hemp one
Fjällräven Re-Kånken (made entirely from polyester recycled from plastic bottles)
Patagonia Ironwood Backpack (body made of 100% recycled polyester + made with fair labor practices)
laptop + charger
dry erase board
DIY one from old picture frames
Markers:
Pilot Board Master (91% recycled plastic + refillable)
Pilot Whytebord (56% recycled + bottled ink refillable)
Planner
Use a digital one
Make a bullet journal with a recycled notebook
Use a refillable planner where each year you would just have to buy the inserts which are easily recyclable
I can't seem to find one but if you happen to find one that uses recycled paper then that's good
Pencil bag
Make one yourself. Use old clothes (your own or thrifted) as fabric!
Post-it notes
Try going digital for to do list and stuff
Post-It Greener Notes (67% plant-based adhesive + 100% recycled paper) - different sizes/colors, however it's only the "Greener Notes" ones. The other "eco friendly ones by them is only 30% recycled paper
Printer, + paper + ink
If you're debating taking a printer and don't already have a printer I recommend printing on campus or sharing one with roommates. The only times you really use it is to print essays/assignments and depending on your major this might not be too often.
Paper:
Printworks 20lb Paper (100% recycled paper)
AmazonBasics 20lbs Paper (100% recycled paper)
Hammerhill 20lbs Paper (100% recycled paper)
Eco Paper Sugar Cane Paper (made from sugar cane)
Ink (Refill / Recycle):
Try refilling ink cartridges at places like Costco, Walgreens, Office Max, etc.
However, they can only really be refilled a few times, after that, recycle the cartridges at Office Depot, Staples, etc.
Some Tips
Flash cards
Digital flashcard apps. There's Quizlet. And I also like Anki which is free for Mac, Windows, Andriod but $25 for iOS :(
Flashcard alternative - use a folded piece of paper
AmazonBasics - use as a last resort, only 10% recycled paper
Binder / folders
Recycled Paper Folders - such as the EarthWise by Oxford (100% post-consumer fiber)
Wooden Binders
Usb drive
A metal or wood one is best
Or a plastic one if you already have one or someone gave it to you
Notebook (Recycle / Compost)
OneNote (free for most college students) is a great app that works on all platforms. I love that it lets you separate notes into folders and subjects. Google Docs is another great alt. Or just whatever writing app your device comes with.
DIY Recycled Notebook // Decomposition Book (100% post-consumer recycled paper)
Onyx and Green 5 Subject Notebook (made with sugar cane paper)
Filler Paper (Recycle / Compost)
Ampad Filler Paper (100% recycled paper)
Ecology Filler Paper (100% recycled paper)
Or make your own paper!
Pens
Fountain pens (preferrable metal) are best since you can refill them with ink. If you can't find/afford a metal one, try finding a plastic one made from recycled plastic such as the Pilot Kakuno Fountain Pen (85% recycled plastic)
Ballpoint Pens:
Onyx and Green Retractable Ballpoint Pen (bamboo body, corn plastic, product and packaging  95% biodegradable)
Pilot Petball Ballpoint Pen (90.4% recycled material)
Felt Pens:
Pentel Sign Pens (80% recycled plastic) *only the black, red, blue, and green pens!!
Pilot Super Petit Marker (83.5% recycled plastic)
Gel Pen:
Pentel EnerGel-X (84% recycled plastic)
Pencils
Wooden pencils that come in cardboard
Some are also made with recycled content such as Onyx and Green Pencils (made from recycled newpaper)
Recycled Mechanical Pencils
Onyx and Green Mechanical Pencils (bamboo body, corn plastic, product and packaging  95% biodegradable)
BIC Ecolutions Xtra-Life Mechanical Pencils (65% recycled plastic)
Erasers
Any that come in cardboard packaging. If you can, recycled rubber is best.
Highlighers
I use Notability to input all my pdf readings and highlight them there. Saves so much paper and ink! For the non-pdf readings I use CamScanner to scan the pages and make them into a pdf that way I don't have to make copies. I heard GoodNotes is also good and similar to Notability
Wooden Highlighters - compost the stub. Any brand.
Liquid Highlighters:
Zebra Optex 1 EZ (98% recycled plastic + refillable)
Pilot Spotliter 2 (89% recycled plastic + refillable)
Markers / Colored Pencils
I use to use these to make my study guides pop. I don't use them as much since I use apps like OneNote and Notability to take notes.
Markers:
Zebra Mackee Care Double-Sided Markers (83% recycled plastic + refillable)
Colored Pencils:
Any that come in cardboard or metal packaging

Why I Don’t Highlight
"What", you say, clutching your  Zebra Mildliners to your chest, "she doesn't highlight? But... How does she study?"
I'm coming clean: Yes, the rumors are true. I don't usually highlight.
I am not opposed to highlighting - I think it can be very beneficial when used correctly.
(The TL;DR of this post comes down to: Do what's right for you. If fifteen different shades of highlighter help you retain information, that's great. But don't let studyblr pressure you into thinking that highlighting will always help you. Conversely, if your system is working for you, don't let me pressure you into thinking that you shouldn't be highlighting, either! But maybe stop for a minute and reevaluate whether you should actually be highlighting. I was a serial highlighter until I realized that sometimes it's literally just a waste of money.)
My personal reasons for not always highlighting are the following:
When first going through a textbook, you literally have no idea if what you're reading is a main point or not. If you're a repeat reader, like I am (meaning you like to go through your textbook multiple times), you'll likely still have no idea on the second and I'd argue even on the third run through. In many fields, you probably won't know what's truly relevant until you first start actively applying your knowledge in a job. By the time you're knowledgeable enough to take the exam with a passing grade, you're probably ready to highlight. Which is usually where I stop because I hardly aim for an A in university (not very studyblr of me but I'm trying to graduate here) and they also design exams to fail a lot of us.
Most of my textbooks are already structured so well that they hardly need more highlights. The most important things are already bolded, they use clear diagrams, a consistent system of what formatting is used for examples, key terms, etc.
My textbooks are also already the most condensed version of the material you are going to get. If they left anything out the information would be incomplete or inaccurate. I need to know everything that's in there. There are not key points to identify - everything is going to be important if the topic is tested. If it's not important, the textbook usually won't elaborate on it but rather simply refer to the corresponding § in the law code, or often, quite literally, say that "it's complicated" or "subject of discussion in academic circles".
Color coding doesn't exactly help me. Or if it does, the effect is miniscule. Too often I have let myself be lured into thinking that I know what it says on the page when in reality I simply recognize the layout and the colors (something Marty Lobdell also mentions in his infamous lecture). I can't do anything about layout, but I can avoid thinking "ah yes, I have definitely seen that bright yellow highlight in that place before" and instead focus on the material as much as possible.
This is a more economical reason, but oftentimes I have to buy my books new, and when I do, I want to resell them for as much money as possible. Books that look as untouched as possible sell for more money.
I go to and take notes in class, and thus will know what the professor elaborates on. I don't need to highlight that in my textbook, where it's permanent - I can simply refer to my notes. Most of the time I will also make note of when the professor hints at a topic being a frequent exam question.
In what cases do I highlight, after all?
In my law codes. I have a color coding system, which will usually change depending on subject, but in civil law for example, I have separate colors for contract law, family law, property law, etc which make it easy to distinguish, and also trigger my brain to think of property law even if the location of the particular law is in a place seemingly unrelated to property law.
PDFs. The great thing about PDFs is that you can annotate them and highlight the fuck out of them and it's not permanent. Which means if halfway through your class you decide that your color coding system was crap (been there, done that) you can change it with little effort or remove highlights that you decide are no longer essential.
Cases. Long cases, especially for civil law, are designed to be confusing as fuck, so highlighting things where your brain immediately goes !!!!! is wise. But I also always did a brain dump for those where I put down my initial thoughts and reflexes before getting started on a structured solution. If anybody is interested, I can make a separate post on how I approach solving cases.
Digital notes of any kind. In my digital notes, I make any additions to the case solutions I prepared at home distinguishable, and highlight what the professor elaborated on or emphasized especially.

Read Our Testimonials!!
I use this whole series in my Art Class to Elementary children. They love this extra activity. It builds their confidence that they can draw identifiable things. They even take multiple instructions and create a whole picture.
These books on how to draw are very easy for kids and beginning artists to follow.
This is a fun drawing guide for kids (and adults, too) that shows, step-by-step, how to make simple, stylized outline drawings of 101 animals, everything from armadillos to zebras. It has kept the preschooler and teenager in our household entertained for hours — and it’s the first place I look if I want to figure out how to make a simple line drawing of a horse or panda bear.
This is an excellent book for the beginning artist or any artist wanting to improve their skills. The animal anatomy is superb. The cost of the book is also a plus. I got a lot more than I paid for, especially with the bonus books!
This is a really exceptional fundamental book which includes the whole range of animals in a really simple and easy to comprehend format.
“I’ve been looking for a way to get my kids interested in drawing, I ordered the books (200 Animals, Farm Animals and Forest Animals) and pretended like I bought them for myself, my 6 year old son saw me drawing and asked what I was doing “oh, just learning to draw a Shark” he called up his older brother and they asked me if they could try, “sure” they took the book and spent hours drawing that day.”
“…… this book can be the beginning of a great relationship between your child and his pencil doodles. “
” My 6yr old loves to draw but wanted lessons. This was the next best thing, easy to follow steps and now she is happy to draw. There are more animals then I have seen in other how to draw books. “

Part 2: Highlighters
I use highlighters mainly in my own notes, in handouts, and in books and reading material that I own. Almost all our school books are loaned from the school, so I can’t mark them. I do sometimes print out pages from PDFs and other reading material. Individual reviews for each highlighter below.
Disclaimer: The following are only my opinions based on personal experience with the highlighters.
Muji dual-ended –– These highlighters have a clear portion at their thicker end. This allows you to see the next word or so while highlighting, so you’ll be less likely to overhighlight (though this isn’t very useful for me because of the way I hold my highlighters). They are quite bright in photos but aren’t overwhelmingly neon on paper. They smudge a bit with gel pens (they smudge the worst when paired with Muji gel pens and Muji notebooks), so I let my writing dry before use and then clean them off with a few strokes on scratch paper. The dual-ended feature also comes quite useful.
Stabilo swing cool –– The ones I have are quite dark so it is hard to see text underneath them, but I’ve found other Stabilo colors to be more eye-friendly. These require a lighter touch as they have very dark and relatively flowy ink. (I’ve heard great things about the Stabilo pastel line, which I haven’t tried yet)
Zebra Mildliners (dual-ended)–– These have gorgeous colors, but nothing special. They smudge a lot but I avoid ruining them by letting the ink dry before highlighting, then cleaning them by drawing with them on scratch paper. I would love to call them overrated, but I do love them. They are really pretty and a great buy if you can find them. However, the thick ends are a little harder than the other two brands.

27/01/2019
I set up a private Instagram today, and deactivated my old account. I just felt that I didn't use it at all because there's too much trash. I also didn't really enjoy seeing GAE doing well without me, but that's just me.
I also woke up really late today. Like 11ish? Didn't do much. My skincare routine took a lot longer than I feel it usually does.
I feel really tired today.
I really want some mild liners, which is a really good company for pastel highlighters. I saw a review from Edward about this velvet airy liptint, and I really want some.
http://www.periperacosmetic.com/en/product/view.asp?
sh_cate2=20100&product_cd=P201702137537
I'm feeling pretty sad today, but I don't know why.
I want so many things my god. I really really want these marble brushed I forgot if I mentioned them already but they're just so cute.
https://www.amazon.com/UNIMEIX-Brushes-Eyeliner-Foundation-Cosmetic/dp/B077ZVX7GZ
These mildliners.
https://www.amazon.com/Zebra-Mildliner-highlighter-Pastel-Color/dp/B072QXQHFC
Also like a bunch of stuff from dog dog.
Kaguya-sama already has three episodes out but I can't watch them because the ads are too lewd and mom will get the wrong idea, when I get a PC in my room, I will watch it asap.
I'm still not sure if the BB cream really cute thing is too pale for me. I'm trying to go out in the sun as less as possible so O can become less tan.
Yesterday I studied for three hours doing graphs and ish but I hate graphs so much. They're so annoying to draw. I skipped a the questions that had drawing graphs in them.
I think that when I'm older, I should get plastic surgery, maybe square jaw reconstruction surgery.
I'm really glad that the animation for kaguya-sama is so good. It's super fluid and beautiful.
I'm extremely bored. It's like I have nothing to do, I could do math I guess. But okay I'll do it. But I'll let myself do two hours if I get really really bored.
I watched the fourth Transformers movie, it was alright. I had a hunch that it was directed by Michael bay since there were more explosions than words spoken in that movie.
I realised why I am like this, and I feel like I'm left out a lot. It's because I want be special. Like that's why it bothers me when people say that I am just a normal person and react like how anyone would react. It tells me that I'm just a sheep in the herd. I don't have anything special about me. I'm just normal. That's why I feel jealous a lot, it's like I'm not special to them. I just wish I was though. I wish I was different and special. But that's impossible. Because I will never be special. It's impossible for me to be. People like Ameera and Gabby, they don't have to try and everyone treats them so special. I wish I had that, I'm more of a wallflower though I guess. I guess I should own that huh? :/ I know what clique I am in a highschool movie now haha. I'm just a wallflower.
I found a PDF of perks of being a wallflower and I am reading it right now. I hope it's one of those books that gets me right in the feels and I can proudly say that this helped me overcome my need of being special.
I realised it's maybe it's not "being special" it's my need to be better than others. I remember the first moment of this I felt as a kid. I met someone who was younger than me when I was around five and in my head I said "How dare you be younger than me." And I know that's totally irrational, I'm just relaying what I remember.
I also don't like it when I'm telling people about my problems and they are like "me too"
Aw man now I'm crying at 2 in the morning. Thinking about my dad on the way back home and how sad he said that he only had one friend in school. He also apologised a lot when I told him that the reason I would only talk to the therapist about my issues with GAE, was because when I talked about it to him, he said that it's just normal. My family has gone through a lot of emotional trauma. I just wish they were happy.
I would be so happy if I invited someone to the movies and then everytime we go to the movies I always pay but one day they pull me aside and say "I know that your family doesn't have a lot of money, so you don't have to pay for my ticket this time." Because whenever I was desperate for Gabby and I to go hang out, she always told me to pay. But this is just my weird fantasy sorry.
I want to stop being so god damn sensitive. I don't have an excuse to be so sensitive, it's not like I have depression or anything, so why am I like this?! I'm so useless and pathetic, Ema said so herself ( the pathetic part, not the useless part) she also said that I'm really judgemental which is true. I don't know why I'm upset by that, because she's just telling me the truth, I should just accept it.
Another memory that makes me pissed of at Ema is that I sent a picture on words to use in a essay instead of because and happy, like simple words Y'know? And she said that these were pretentious and made fun of them. It's not like she was attacking me, it's just that I thought it would be helpful and she reacted really negatively. I wonder if she had a bad day on that day.
On page 14, it says that two characters, Sam and Patrick, they were really nice to Michael and didn't throw in any inside jokes, so he could actually keep up. How nice that would be, like you would actually feel included in the conversation wouldn't you lol.
