A few months ago I came across Bea Johnson’s blog about her Zero Waste Home and was amazed by her lifestyle. Watching her made me think two things:

1. Wow, it’s really possible.

2. I wish I could live like this.

Of course Bea had a lifestyle that took her a good couple of years to adjust to and this is really important to remind yourself when you start embarking in this lifestyle, because it can become overwhelming.

I am temporarily living in Italy and my experience here has been a very positive one in the long run. As anywhere in the world, it has its good sides and bad sides, but let me tell you something, Italians do like their plastic and its been hard to move away from it but not totally impossible.

Although Italy does have some bulk stores they are mainly in big cities and unfortunately very far away from where I live. It would be easier if bulk was available. The problem arises when bulk is not an option but you still want to live a zero waste lifestyle.

Another difficult aspect in my quest is the fact that as a family with two kids, things can become even more complicated when trying to move away from our plastic society. Those of you with children will appreciate that it is a challenge :)

So with these issues in mind I decided to share my experience, in the hopes that I can inspire some of you reading this, that may be in the same situation as myself. These are my steps into a healthier and greener lifestyle, as I cannot bare to sit and watch the constant devastation being inflicted onto our planet.

I am playing my part no matter how small or insignificant it can seem, I am sure its the future and the right thing to do. Hope you can join me for this journey too.

I buy in bulk to reduce my waste so when I saw this picture I gasped out LOUD! You see it right? The store clerk is opening up not large plastic bags of cereal and pouring them into a bulk bin. That seems crazy to me! In order to not dwell in the rediculouness about it, I quickly realized the lesson 🤔. It's up to me to ask the right questions to ensure the outcome I desire. ME.. . I understand there are many reasons why people buy in bulk and I'm sure the owners of the store have their reasoning. . I NOW will ask the store owner how they do it at the bulk store 🏬 I frequent. It's up to me to make sure I'm really getting what I think I am. ME. . I would NEVER thought that's how it was done! Never! 😒 . How about you. Any thoughts on this subject? Or am I just crazy? The sad truth behind Winco's bulk cereal....they refill their bulk bins with the same cereal they sell in plastic in the regular grocery aisle. Le sigh. I asked the woman refilling the Toasted Oats I was waiting for whether they recycle the plastic and she said they go into a special "plastics" bin and she thinks they get recycled. 😣 Makes me wonder how the other bins are filled here at Winco and elsewhere. Is there a better alternative? Waxed paper that can be composted? And airtight refillable plastic bin that is transported between manufacturers and grocers? Make every purchase matter. Purchase quality over quantity and only purchase what you need. This is especially true when it comes to our little ones. Often times we tend to be wasteful with spending and create an over abundance of toy and clothing options for our little ones. Not to mention, too many toys can have more negative than positive impacts on a child. I plan to cover this further in a future blog post. When it comes to a children’s toy I strive to purchase quality over quantity. Personally I’m a fan of the age old adage “they just don’t make them like they used to”, and will often times find a good secondhand toy that will outlast most new products on the market. This also prevents me from purchasing virgin plastic items, which I try to do when possible. Purchasing secondhand limits out of pocket costs and does not use additional resources like those used when creating new products.
