December Tag Wrangling
Howdy new folks! This is always the slowest of my art sideblogs; there's just not that much fanart getting made for it, I flirt right on the edge of my maintaining my personal goal/limit of "a queue good for a week posting at least once a day." But, I'm always looking for more, especially older stuff, and I'll do my best to keep us well-fed with Zhenhun content!

I think I just realized that in the end and despite uh. y’know the everything you can imagine, I actually prefer the drama version of guardian over the book version, just because the drama version of weilan sort of Hit Differently for me personally on a lot of levels?
because in the drama it’s not even so much that shen wei fell in love with kunlun/zhao yunlan (though god knows he did that too don’t get me wrong lol) -- it’s that zhao yunlan gifted him the idea of a future worth having. and to shen wei zhao yunlan is that future -- the message and the messenger.
what if, in your darkest moments, the actual irrefutable voice of the future came to you and told you ‘I know it’s hard to believe right now, but it will get better. there will be something more than this someday; this pain isn’t all there is. it will be worth it’??? what then??????? would one have no recourse but to venture into the precarious waters of hope forevermore?????????????? and then afterwards you realize the future could come to you to tell you those things with love because due to timey wimey reasons you gave those words and that love to them first when THEY needed it, without even thinking about it, just because it was true. “You’re worth it, and the world is worth it”. I am losing my mind.
I mean yeah if I were bb!shen wei who’d only known struggle and loneliness and war and then suddenly the most beautiful man you’ve ever seen turned up out of the blue one day and looked at me as if I were the single dearest, most precious thing in the universe and promised me life would one day hold so much more than pain and he can prove it, he IS the proof… I think I would have no choice but to fall inconsolably in love with him forever too what the fuck
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for illustrative purposes, you understand
before zhao yunlan shen wei doesn't even have a proper name, just like... a description. he's made himself a tool of grim utility for a worthy purpose, and the people around him have all just let him because they need him to be that. until one person finally came along and asked him to take the mask off (”You’re a person, not a knife” oh my god ;___________;) and saw him, and in the act of being seen and returning that gaze he could become someone, could suddenly conceptualize life as something more than constant struggle. I mean zhao yunlan is literally his introduction to what's sweet in the world, the show is not being subtle about it. (and in fact goes about showing it in the single most suggestive way I can imagine short of having a dildo or possibly actual fellatio going on on screen, which I hugely respect and admire them for artistically)
(and then there’s this whole Situation from the POV of zhao yunlan, who -- as he confesses in the car scene where they pretend they’re talking about poor zhu hong’s feelings (lol) -- has reached the conclusion he’s simply not made for love; he can’t get it right no how hard he tries and it just hurts people, so everyone’s better off if he stops striving for it. and then imagine finding out that once, when it mattered most, with the person who mattered most, you did get your love across so well it kept them going for tEN THOUSAND YEARS and then beyond. he made shen wei feel so loved and so secure in the existence of goodness in the universe that he has enough hope for the both of them even at the end of the show, when everything's gone wrong and all hope should be lost -- but it isn't, because their lives really truly touched each other and that stays, even beyond death. death can claim so many things, but not that they loved each other, that they will love each other no matter where they go. and while it's left up in the air in the show itself the structure of the story says that they WILL meet again, because that's already the shape the story is told in, that is the pattern. shen wei's hope is not unaccompanied by proof, and now they're both in on it. what do you do with your brain after that other than just idk go lie down for a century, that’s certainly how I feel right now.)
Tumblr media
the way he gazes after him like a man softly surprised to have found the answer to the question of life, the universe and everything in an unexpeced kitchen drawer or something. god
like this is a depth and richness of thematic meaning this trash show should not be able to support and yet!!! between the horrid cgi nonsense and bizarre pacing and stilted dialogue this is what the story is about and it’s so FUCKING good what the hell (personally I prefer the pacing of the relationship in the drama -- they spent all their good pacing budget on that to the detriment of every other aspect of the show, so thank fuck it’s the most important part haha). I do really enjoy the book too but it doesn't make me borderline incoherent with emotion quite like this

i love translating chinese to someone but idk why it means what it means it just !means! what it means
unrelated but i ventured onto reddits language learner subs again. happy news no big drama lol. anyway i read a post on someone asking when to increase difficulty of immersion material and it got me thinking:
1. if i wanted to increase show difficulty for myself, i should immerse next in a new genre (probably a palace related drama to pick up some words), or immerse more in shows with NO chinese subs. because i’m fairly good at following shows now if i have chinese subs. But with no subs, relying solely on listening comprehension, I miss a lot more. So I could improve there. And its probably easier to learn from with the visual aid of it being a show - whereas right now I do most listening comprehension with audiobooks and dramas. Which to be fair, just is more fun to me right now. (So i guess lets be real i’m going to keep watching chinese shows with chinese subs unless subs aren’t an option ToT i watch english shows with english subs, its just easier!)
2. with immersion, i genuinely think the difficulty level a person can handle is usually HIGHER than they think it is. so i’m a big believer in having at least some immersion material that you consider difficult, challenging, that you Think you may not be able to handle. So for example, when I started chinese. Once graded readers became readable to me (but not ‘easy’ yet), I tried to immerse with an easier tamendegushi webnovel I found (simple daily life vocabulary), and with tian ya ke. tamendegushi was intensely difficult to me and took like 1 hour per chapter at first (probably 5 page chapters). It was way harder than a graded reader, but if i looked up enough words i could comprehend the main plot. Then I spent some time on tian ya ke - and like a PAGE took me 1 hour. So tried it for a decent while like a few weeks. Then I went back to tamendegushi. Suddenly chapters took me 45 minutes, then 30, and it was a bit less of a slog. When I went back to graded readers? they were now ACTUALLY easy, not just ‘manageable.’ I went back to tian ya ke for a while, it was now 1-1.5 hours per chapter. Still brutal, but I could actually finish a chapter in 2 days now. So I worked on it for a couple months, and by the end of it chapters were taking me 45 minutes. I went back to tamendegushi (since graded readers now gave me no difficulty), and tamendegushi at that point I could finish a chapter in 20 minutes. I was clearly improving. At that point I wanted to work on reading speed so I found some easier novels and read them, aiming for a chapter every 10 minutes. Once I managed that, I picked a new novel easier than priest’s writing but harder than tamendegushi, and made it my ‘easier’ reading material.
Basically: I would have A-slight challenge, B-difficult, C-very-hard level materials. I start with something being B level difficult, then pick something C-very-hard level. Then I go back to B and eventually it becomes A level to me. A level is good extensive reading material for me, B level I can read extensively without tools OR may read intensively (looking up words) to speed up how quick I learn unknown words. C level I HAVE to look up unknown words or I cannot follow what’s going on. A level stuff will eventually stop being challenging at all, at which point my B level stuff becomes my A level stuff. Like graded readers used to be my A level materials but now I know all the words/grammar in them, so now stuff like tamendegushi and Xiao Wangzi are my A level stuff. zhenhun and tian ya ke used to be my C level stuff, but now i can read them without a dictionary if i want to, so they’re B level stuff now. I don’t have any C-level stuff right now (maybe Poyun or a new genre I don’t read as much like Sha Po Lang, Can Ci Pin, next time I want to read something I have to look up words for).
For shows, I really recommend just pushing yourself beyond what you think you’re capable of. Especially if you have learned 1000-2000 or more words. You’re ready. At that point you just need to get used to actually Recognizing the words you studied in immersion, and get used to the speaking speed. But if you know that many words, you WILL comprehend more of shows the more you practice watching them (as you get used to instant-recognition of stuff you’ve studied), you WILL eventually be able to pick up some new words/phrases from context alone, and if you want to speed things up you can pick some key words to look up as you watch (and soon enough you’ll know enough key words that you no longer feel a need to look up words to comprehend the main plot). For shows, the easiest to start with tend to be slice of life or romance for the mainly daily-life easier vocabulary and context, or things you’ve seen before/know the plot of already, or action (because a lot of the plot is visually obvious). But other genre specific shows you WILL get used to, and if you want to learn the words for that genre so future shows in it are easier for you, then pick a genre-specific show so you can learn the genre common words.
EVERY step of getting used to show immersion felt ridiculously hard and yet it seemed like i ‘magically’ got better after just doing it a lot. and i think a big part of that is because of what i mentioned above - the initial difficulty curve is mostly not being used to the speaking speed and immediately comprehending words you studied but have no practice Actually Recognizing.
At first I tried to watch Anti Fraud League after 5 months of chinese and flashcard studying 1000 words and reading a grammar guide summary (so I had theoretical knowledge but no practice). I could handle 12-20 minutes at a time, with constant pausing to read the chinese subs, and I could follow the main overall plot but my brain felt FRIED. So I did about 20 minutes of an episode once a week for a couple months. Then took a break. Once a month I tried watching an episode of a show - Handsome Siblings (took me 1.5 hours cause I kept pausing to look up critical words), and Xiao Xin Shi Yi Lang (first show I managed to watch in regular airing time cause I didn’t pause). It felt mentally DRAINING but I managed it. So the next month I tried Granting You A Dreamlike life. I made a rule to either pause to read chinese subs for help OR look up a word only around 5 times an ep (to keep my watch time per ep under 1 hour). The first 5 episodes felt DRAINING lol. But I was getting through them in 50 minutes an ep, and simply FINISHING the eps which is better than I was doing back in anti fraud league. After ep 5 I stopped having to look up words or pause, watch time went down to the actual run time, and It felt much easier to watch and just binge. By 15 eps I felt I had to focus less hard to follow the plot, and it felt harder than watching with english subs, but much easier than before. Then I took a break for several months. Killer and Healer came out and I tried watching that in chinese - went about as well as GYADL, no pausing needed or word lookup. Then Word of Honor was airing, and I wanted to watch faster than english subs came out initially. So I started that. BRAIN FELT FRIED because I did not know a lot of wuxia vocabulary. I didn’t look up words though, I paused for the first few eps to read certain lines (especially the poem quotes the prince and wen kexing use ;-; ) but afterwards i stopped and just decided ‘i’ll follow the plot as well as i can!’ It... worked out. By ep 7 I was following the plot fine. Then I’d watch the english subs later, and find out I followed a lot more details than I thought. Then I’d watch the chinese subs again (cause i kept rewatching lol) and catch even more details/words the second watch. To get better at comprehending I simply.... had to keep watching.
After Word of Honor, shows in genres I was familiar with were no longer ‘draining’ in chinese. I didn’t need to focus as intensely (I had to focus a bit more intensely than with english subs, but not to the point i felt tired). The summer after WoH I watched half of Humans cdrama, and by the time I got through those episodes chinese watching didn’t require intense focus anymore - just about the amount english subs require from me. After that i’ve watched a few more things in chinese i wanted to check out, and i did not need to focus hard. The exception of course is new genres - which still feel significantly harder. But I’m sure like WoH, if i just watched several episodes, i’d eventually adjust.
So yeah like... just like my reading immersion, I kept gradually doing something a bit harder then going back to things I was more familiar with. And each time I went back, the older thing got ‘easier.’ If I had given up just because I thought i ‘still wasn’t prepared’ back when an episode was taking 1 hour, i wouldn’t have gotten to the point where shows eventually got more manageable and less draining. (I do think i needed to know about 1500 words before shows didnt take so much mental effort i’d give up though, and probably had picked up around 2000 words by the time i was watching WoH. So i think with less than that much vocab, word lookup may be more necessary).

wtf is the plot of guardian bc ive seen you post abt it since day 1 and i still have no idea
Anon thank u so much for this ask. It gave me a good laugh. So!!!
Guardian aka zhenhun is a 2018 cdrama based off a danmei novel of the same name. It went thru double censorship with censorships of the main couple and also of the supernatural elements of the story.
The drama (the valid version) takes place on the planet haixing in which around 10 thousand years ago, there was a war btw dixingren (aliens with super powers that lived underground), yashou (demi humans that can also turn into animals), and haixingren (humans).
Dixingren live under the surface of Haixing and the war started bc a fraction of them came onto the surface and stole from the other 2 races and wanted to be the sole race to live above ground. So rebel dixing armies fought against a coalition of yashou, haixingren, and dixingren that wanted peace. The war ended in with dixingren retreating underground again but with these things called the hallows that gave them more resources so they didnt need to come onto the surface. The big war hero of dixing is heipaoshi the black cloaked envoy. Bc of him mostly, peace remained btw the 3 for 10 thousand years.
Though the beginning of the story in present time, dixing is losing resources and more and more ppl are escaping to the surface. The main character, Zhao Yunlan, is in charge of the Special Investigation Department that apprehend escaped dixingren.
The first case brings him to meet the love interest Shen Wei, a university professor. From there the two keep running into each other and try to uncover why more dixingren are escaping and why dixing itself no longer has resources. It's like a monster of the week c*p show (they're not real cops but still 🤢) that slowly builds up to an overarching plot and yea. The plot is honestly rather... well not the best written bc it had to be completely overhauled bc of censorship purposes but the main cast is rlly the reason to watch it. The SID are a rlly endearing found family and Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are rlly interesting and fun to watch. Also the CGI is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL but kinda funny.
The plot of the novel is about the same but instead of aliens, there are gods and ghosts and spirits and demons. Instead of dixing, it's the underworld and the story is darker. The reason this is censored as far as I know, but I will preface I'm not Chinese and not an expert on this!!, is bc the main characters are a ghost king and a god. And you cant have morally grey characters portrayed positively. Same for having a god be gay. And yea also a lot of the characters are interpretations of real gods from Chinese mythology and that gets into a grey area bc some of them are condemned and just not portrayed in a way that the government would like. Religion is smth the government has had more and more limitations on in media iirc. So they just scrapped all that and opted to make it sci fi rather than portray too many prohibited subjects.
As with other dramas adapted from bl, it's obvious the main characters are in love they just dont say it. But yea.. sorry this. Is such a long answer I'm just... yk ♡♡

I know that you have... mixed feelings about the Guardian drama, which is understandable. But if it's okay with you, could you share all the things that you do like about the drama?
Tumblr media
Hmmmm uhhhh im lowkey laughing here bc it’s a struggle to think of something lmao okok hmmmm okay so the only reason I even picked up the drama (much like most probably everyone else in my circle or that I know of) is that the actors’ chemistry just blew the roof. Both Zhu Yilong (Shen Wei) and Bai Yu (Zhao Yunlan) read the novel so a lot of the weilan scenes despite being just in the drama script would def had been influenced by the novel - my all time example for this is ep 1 where Shen Wei’s reaction to seeing Zhao Yunlan was sooooo intense. This doesn’t make sense in the drama story line (lmao they made SW only spend how long with Kunlun?? and SW was asleep for 10k years?? c l o w n e r y) BUT it makes sense in the novel so the whole mix of novel characterization shown by the actors were one of my favorites.
Did the drama do anything better than the novel? Personally, it’s a no for me. At first, I was thinking of how they gave more story to SID members but those story lines were weak but like it was expected? I mean if WeiLan had a weak story in drama, what more for side characters? I also thought of Ye Zun (Gui Mian/Ghost Face in the novel) and while I’m happy he had a larger role and had more screen time in the drama, at the end of the day it’s still a big no for me. His plans of grandeur got defeated bc my rat son didn’t know there’s a mic broadcasting his sht?? lmao c l o w n e r y kdfskjbdg Also, how it was concluded he did all that bc he thought his brother didn’t care for him? such a weak foundation on his character AND LMAO don’t even get me started on how they destroyed shen wei’s character when shen wei’s character in the novel is at least half the core of the novel’s story and lol look how they weakened zhao yunlan so much even bai yu joked about it hahaha
But ok all I said were negative ones except how much I loved the actors’ portrayal (but again you know I lowkey understand bc censorship is stricter for their plot and the whole unexpected bankruptcy thing on their budget) - soooo GOOD POINTS hmm
1) OST is amazing bc well it’s a pre-prod thing so that was back when they were brimming with budget; 2) i think that watching the drama first before reading the novel is still a good way to go about it bc the drama provided some good visuals that’ll help your novel-read; 3) ZHAO YUNLAN’S LOLLIPOPS SDKJNKJFJKDFFK they really laid it thick on his oral fixation and im here for that4) OH WAIT i found one that i equally like in the novel - da qing having the ability to retain his human form from the start in the drama gave more moments for my fav brotp in zhenhun lol but i also like the novel da qing’s inability to do it initially but that he can turn into a phone charm haha5) i understood chu shuzhi’s power in the drama more (zombie king what in the novel??? haha)6) yashou tribes were given more screen time compared to the yaos in novel but im chill either way7) OH YEAH the dixing who had the skill to switch other people’s personalities giving us the chaotic SID team, the FOR ONCE suffering zhao yunlan (bc usually it’s his team ~suffering~ bc of him), and the HEI PAO GEGE SCENE oh yeaaahhh and that episode where shen wei brings zhao yunlan back to his apartment and zhao yunlan ends up leaning and sleeping on him in the cab (everybody say thank you to bai yu for those ad lib scenes bc he wanted to mess with zhu yilong and bless zhu yilong for being able to act accordingly w/o warning lol)8) ok fine so there were small weilan scenes that weren’t in the novel that were cute in the drama like zhao yunlan berating shen wei when the latter had his finger intentionally pricked AND the tiny clues that the producers keep on leaving to shout that weilan is legit canon (the wedding decors, the hair change, the ‘shen wei’s world’ parts, etc) AND forever lol-ing at that ye zun scene where he goes to SID dressed as shen wei and he asks the ghost lovers where (his) “my little yunlan” is then proceeding to tell zhao yunlan he dressed up for him njdfskgjsdkjgbdjkg

Shen Wei is the white moonlight glowing so brightly in the night sky but is beyond reach. Zhao Yunlan is the blazing sun, so warm and charming but is the flame to a moth if getting any closer. In the enormous universe, only the sun shines for the moon. If there was no sun, the moon would be dead. If there was no Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei would have no reason to live.
