i do not think you would be as charitable to zach davis if he was arguing in favor of anti-racism or feminism rather than against trans activism. i think you would probably agree that he thinks people who disagree with him are idiots or liars. playing hitler's advocate is a very popular and well-regarded position in the post-SSC/ACX rationalist community
Well, you're entitled to think that, I guess? I would say your perception is definitely a caricature of me and possibly a caricature of the post-SSC/ACX rationalist community as well (although I can see where the "pro- Hitler's advocate" image of the earlier SSC community comes from, for sure). It's possible that we've been exposed to different ZMD content, of course.
I would point out that I also consider a ton of the most prevalent anti-trans-activist arguments issued by the loudest people on that side to be of pretty garbage quality and those people to often be very visibly flawed people (e.g. Jordan Peterson, Helen Joyce, Norman Finkelstein), and I haven't been afraid to lay into them on this blog from time to time when particularly egregious talking points come to my attention. But those posts are a lot harder to find in my archive, because they don't generate the ripple effect of dozens of responses and responses-to-responses that result from my making (even parenthetical or intended-to-be-mild) critical comments about my issues with the trans activist movement.
My exposure to Davis' writing is pretty limited. Anyone is welcome to quote me passages of his that make it clear he thinks other people are idiots (beyond combative rationalist-style "confused about their own rationalist principles in a frustrating way" complaints) or liars (and just using "gaslighting" doesn't count unless there's evidence in the text that he meant it in the original sense of the term, rather than misusing it as he himself has more or less admitted to doing).

Janeway has a tendency to encourage those on her crew to explore their identity and freedoms but come down on them like a ton of bricks when this interferes with voyagers mission/safety, and its most obvious with people like 7 of 9 tom paris in that water world ep b'elanna in that evil cardassian hologram doctor episode and arguably harry kim in that alien sex episode (i dont wanna look up the titles), but I think this tendency is exacerbated when it comes to the doctor due to his status both as a hologram and as voyagers only doctor, so janeway both restricts his freedoms due to the fact that he has an essential role in voyagers survival and anything that could impact that role would put the ship and crew in danger, and her prejudice against holograms (which she retains in spite of her friendship and respect of the doctor) means she is able to justify more restrictions upon his freedoms in order to ensure he performs his role on the ship and frame basic rights as "extraordinary freedoms".

Marte the stunt has hugely ramped up & we're in for a grim few days. ZmD just posted from Costa Rica on her stories.
Hi, anon!
Ohhhh so that's why he didn’t leave CR with the others. It's stunt time!
Time to unleash the anon i got a month or so ago and kept on hand until an eventual tropical vacation? Lol. Here it is:
My older sister knew Za*a McDer*ott at secondary school and still hears information about her from their old friendship group. The reason there's been no movement on the L/Z relationship is because they're arguing over the terms of the contract. Photos are supposed to appear once a month and Louis took this to mean pap shots of them leaving a club or restaurant. Zara thinks this means photos her own photographer has taken which she can put on her IG, which the tabloid press can then pick up on.
They're also supposed to go on vacation or at least look like they're on vacation very soon. Louis just wanted to go down to the south coast and get papped walking on the beach before travelling back to London the same day. Zara is arguing that this location doesn't fit her image which is all about expensive tropical vacations. She likes the idea of Anguilla or St Lucia but Louis has put his foot down and he won't devote that much time to the stunt. Now they're at a stalemate.
Pinch of salt and all that, but lolz.

HAHAHAHA! I was looking on my phone earlier, and I could barely see the video. But yeah. That's OBVIOUSLY Oli and some random black-haired woman.

In those posts you linked and in others that he links to in them, Davis does describe people who disagree with him as "lying to [him]." And his general approach to transness is that his views are so self-evidently correct that people could only disagree with him if they were either malicious or extremely foolish. In his own words that's why he went crazy! This is beating a dead horse pointlessly but like ... what do you imagine a trans person is supposed to get out of discussion with him?
The context is this, followed by this and this, in late-ish March. I suspect all of this involves the same anon doing the asking.
Among all the posts I was intending to write when I hit a brick wall late in March, this is the one I was most immediately going to do, and I even had a draft of it half-written when I realized I was overlooking something major (which will result in me halfway conceding your view!), decided to take a breath before rewriting the draft, then hit my Brick Wall of Too Busy For Tumblr at the very next moment and never did.
Initially my draft was about how I ctrl-F'd all inflections of "lie" in the posts of his that I'd been exposed to, and it seems pretty clear that none of his uses of that verb carry the sense of deliberate liars but rather "saying something that is false", that it's his less than ideal language of choice for venting sheer frustration at people who are confused or on some level lying to themselves which the asker is reading too strong a meaning into, and that the closest thing to an exception to this conveyed sense of "lie" is in a sentence describing his distorted social perceptions leading into a mental breakdown:
(If almost everyone is lying to me about autogynephilia, maybe they're also lying about whether humans actually need to sleep!)
And then, when dealing with the copied-and-pasted sentence above, I actually thought to click on the links. (Specifically, the second one.)
And now I need to partially retract my earlier convictions and concede to you that that post in fact does sound rather like someone who thinks everyone who disagrees with him on a certain thing must be lying. Even then, to be fair, it seemed to be written with enough self-awareness to acknowledge that surely it couldn't actually be true that everyone is lying to him on this one topic, but that there's simultaneously no way for that not to be the case because of elementary logical reasons as watertight as 2 + 2 = 4. And it ends by saying this:
And I'm like, you delusional bastards have been blatantly lying to me about the most important thing in my life for ten years. I want nothing to do with your coalition.
So, yeah, I wouldn't want to engage with Zack M. Davis at the moment when his mind is in that place, and I wouldn't recommend others engage with him then, and I also would probably advise Zack himself to maybe take a break from trying to engage others on it at that point.
While it's reasonable that I didn't want to take the time to read tons of ZMD writing at that moment, it was pretty negligent of me to take so long to think of simply clicking on a link regarding the "lying" stuff that was right there in one of the pieces I had read and to act as confident as I was that I knew his whole personality from such a limited sample, so mea culpa.
This is, as far as I can tell from what I remember of Zack's timeline, something he wrote back in early 2017 while on his way to a full-blown mental breakdown (bringing us full circle back to the way I originally brought him up). I generally don't recommend engaging with people on the topic that's literally driving them crazy at the moment, or at least not for your own well-being.
This is only a partial concession, though, since the other things I've read from him, which constitute everything I've seen from when he's not entering a mental breakdown, his use of "lying" and treatment of his views as self-evidently correct in my opinion don't constitute the description of him that you're insisting on. (And this is a personality trait I'm more sensitive to than you might assume: I consider my birth as an aspiring rationalist as largely coming from having to deal with other people's "my opinion is so evidently true that anyone who disagrees is an idiot or crazy" mentalities!) That is, even though it does indicate a person who thinks he knows better than the people he's arguing against and is very frustrated by this and is argumentative in general, which I admit is something to be cautious around and is not for everyone and is not for me all of the time or on all topics.
In a slightly bemusing twist, it now looks like there's a very good chance I'll come face to face with Zack in a week's time at the Less Online event we're both going to, and it'll be interesting to see what impression I get of him there.
I do want to end with one more important point that I think applies more broadly to my interactions with people here on anything adjacent to trans issues, and that comes from your words
what do you imagine a trans person is supposed to get out of discussion with him?
Maybe I'm reading too much into your wording, but I think there's a pattern going on here where I make some comment in some post that indicates greater-than-zero sympathy with some opinion or opinion-holder that goes against the modal trans movement set of beliefs or greater-than-zero criticism of a talking point used to defend that set of beliefs (e.g. a side remark in the original post that started this whole discussion about "I dislike [aforementioned talking point] for reasons that I'm not going into in this post"), and everything I say in the ensuing back-and-forth is interpreted as somehow an attempt on my part to hector trans people.
Again, this may be reading too much into that one sentence of yours (if I'm asking not to be jumped on quite so much for little side remarks, I should try not to do the same to other people!), but, looking back at my above-linked posts... where did I ever suggest that trans people specifically ought to talk to ZMD (about controversial trans-related issues)?
I mean, apparently a lot of trans people in bayrat circles have talked to ZMD, and some get along with him quite well, and a trans person of a certain (probably more rationalist-y) mindset who wants to consider a variety of points of view on the nature of transness might or might not get something out of conversing with him, depending on a number of factors. You can't deny that he brings an interesting (even if perhaps ultimately wrong) point of view to the table and does so without advocating any threat to the concrete trans rights that are so under assault at the moment. But I wasn't particularly trying to imply that talking to ZMD or reading his stuff was something in particular that trans people, or even trans activists/advocates, should do!
I did suggest that talking to ZMD is something that I might benefit from, more by talking to him about sexuality and autogynephilia than about the more culture-war-ish trans-related issues, in fact. Quoting from myself more specifically (note that "mentally healthy tendency" was clearly a typo for "mentally unhealthy tendency"):
He seems altogether like a cool guy who I’d be happy to have a drink with (and leaving aside his clearly mentally healthy tendency to be obsessively argumentative, his only questionable but very minor visible social quirk is that he seems in the podcast to be trying to direct it rather too much for what is appropriate when you’re the guest). [...] Zack seems like, under the right circumstances, a good person for me to have a frank one-on-one talk about sexuality with.
I said that, and then in subsequent posts defended my (partially mistaken) impression that ZMD's language doesn't indicate that he actually insists on everyone disagreeing with him being idiots or liars. Nothing in there about "trans people ought to be discussing trans issues with him".
Again, I only point this out because lately, I feel like people pushing back against me when this whole cloud of issues come up seem to be characterizing my rhetoric as scolding trans people themselves for not doing X and Y and saying they themselves are to blame for the predicament they're now in, and these exchanges would be easier if people understood that I'm not trying to do that.
I'm posting this now because it's somewhat independent from the other exchanges/asks I want to catch up on, and I'll spend some time between today and tomorrow working on those others and possibly wait to release them all at once. In the meantime, any response to this might have to get ignored indefinitely. I appreciate the engagement, but I can't keep letting myself get bogged down in these Tumblr conversations forever, because I really don't want them dominating this blog or my life.

Honestly the whiplash he causes his fandom is obnoxious. So many Larries are crawling back to him after him saying something nice about Harry only to be smacked with him liking a ZmD post yet again. He caters to one side and then caters to the other over and over.
Hi, anon!
It is annoying, but we're so used to it though. Celebrate the good times while they're here. We know it won't last. Reward him while he's acting good and disengage when he's acting bad. That's the only way they'll learn and it's the only way to survive being a larrie.
But just look how fun and engaged the fandom is when things are great, he's catering to us larries and we get a break from stunts. Imagine the day it will be like this all the time!
