My star polyp is twice as big as it was when I Fitbit 2 months ago but my zooanthid has been unhappy lately and I don’t know why

I haven’t shown off my newest tank here yet, have I?? I have a 16 gallon nano tank with a pair of misbar clownfish and a fire goby with some hermits and snails on the way! There’s currently a frag of green star polyps and fiesta zooanthids but once I’m sure I can keep my parameters stable for a few more weeks I want to get a mushroom and a leather torch! 

The tank is currently just over a month old, cycled fishless for three weeks, and the babies enjoyed their first water change yesterday! They’re eating a mix of brine shrimp and generic omnivore frozen diet right now and are really active when it’s food time!!

Our fish have gotten so big ! 🐟🐠Check out our tomato clown Fetty in his anemone and our Banggai cardinal pair whom are still pregnant, our Blue tang Azul, cleaner wrasse Tiny, and our sea urchin Ursula. And this is the tank; a Fluval Reef M60 (91 litres/24 US gallons).  Not my first choice but it was all I could afford so, we will work with it.  It comes with a Fluval Light fixture 25,000 K, good for soft corals and other less light demanding corals like zooanthids, musrooms and star polyps.  The previous owner bought and included an extra light fixture, an Arcadia Classica LED Stretch 21 Watt, which allows for some maneuvering albeit not much.  Light will have to be replaced when I decide to start stocking sps corals. It also includes a Fluval Sea Protein Skimmer PS1 which will be replaced in due time (meaning as soon as I can allocate money for it) with a Tunze Comline DOC 9004 for better water quality. This system also includes a circulation pump, a heater and another smaller powerhead.

Like I said, and so it begins.

Zoanthids

These are just some of the corals and anemones in my 65gal tank at home. Supported by metal halide lamps, these corals thrive in a perfectly mimicked community. Today i will point out some interesting facts about zoanthids (center), duncans, (top & bottom left) and the min-max anemone.  In the following postings, I will feature select species.

Zoanthids (center), which are commonly misspelled as zooanthids, are relatively easy to care for and spread easily on rocks and can even grow on surfaces such as plastic and the pre-filter box that is featured on many large tanks. In this photo, they can be found in the center. But dont be fooled by their simple appearance. Some members of the order Zoantharia produce a toxin called palytoxin. While the concentration of the toxin in these species is hotly debated, if palytoxin enters the bloodstream via an open wound, the result can be fatal. Contrary to popular belief, palytoxin can enter the bloodstream through undamaged skin. When handeling Zoanthids, be sure to wear non-powdered latex gloves. The most common symptoms associated with palytoxin poisoning in humans are characterized by a bitter/metallic taste, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mild to acute lethargy, paresthesia, bradycardia, renal failure, impairment of sensation, muscle spasms, tremor myalgia, cyanosis, and respiratory distress. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect that you have been exposed to palytoxin. You may also call the National Poison Hotline  (U.S.) 1-800-222-1222.
