I didn’t know death would be so lonely. It makes sense, but still...

I can hear noises. A scream, so many screams, voices, stiff and official like officers, sirens, to me actually sound like Sirens, more voices, mumbles and commands mixing themselves among other miscellaneous noises...

I can hear all of that, but am I really there? Am I really part of it? I’m not, am I, if I’m minutes, seconds, who knows how long from death?

I can’t believe...

There’s a lot of loud beeping.

After all these years, one final hit was what did it.

They didn’t throw me off a building, or shoot me, or stab me, or anything like I expected. It wasn’t long and drawn out either, like it is in the movies. They didn’t take their time; they didn’t get me down and then take a good long pause while they finished me of.

If I didn’t know them, I’d say it was an accident, putting me out that quick. But they’ve been at this for four years, and I’ve been there the whole way. They don’t do accidents. I used to sometimes wonder how I’d gotten by all these years without them getting the edge on me, but that’s my job. Always has been...

That’s a lot of voices.

Always will be. That’s what I always told myself. I guess that ends tonight. Even if I live... They have to know who I am. And with all the media has done with me over the years? Soon everyone will be. Everyone will be...

There’s only one voice now. One voice and a lot of bright, orangey light. I thought the light we walk into was supposed to be white or something? There’s a gasp, a different voice. It’s raspy and hoarse. It’s...trying to talk? No, that’s the first voice. Why are they stammering so much? What are they trying...

Fuck, that’s a lot of noise. What happened to that one person? Can it be just them again? Somehow it feels infinitely less lonely when it seems like there’s less you’re separated from. There’s so much beeping and shouting...and that scream, shit, that scream. It’s less loud now than it was the first time but it’s still gut-wrenching...if I could feel my gut...

Augh I feel so...I don’t even know...I feel...I feel so...wait. I feel. I feel, whatever I feel it doesn’t matter because I can hear that same one person stuttering and that same other person gasping and wheezing and I feel something, god, it feels like ages since I’ve felt something. What do I feel...

Oh I know what I feel: so much pain. And...there it goes, back into the abyss of nothingness...I get death is lonely but is it always so long...

There’s that stuttering voice again, this time unaccompanied by the wheezing like it usually is. The orange light is here though, which is slowly getting harsher.

I hear a strangled cough and feel a surging pain ripple through my body. There’s a gasp and an encompassing pressure that strangely doesn’t provide any more pain. Maybe I’ve maxed out or something. The stammering voice says something and the pressure relieves, with the new voice saying something that sounds tentative and quiet, like an apology.

The orange light grows sharper as a new pain in what must be my face arises, both growing and growing until with one final burst the orange light is fierce and pale. The wheezing sound returns and with it comes a pain in...my chest? My throat? Both? And it clicks that the wheezing sound is me, breathing.

I feel the pressure again, in a smaller area this time, maybe my hand.

I am breathing.

I feel softness, and small pressure, and warmth, and I am part of the comfort and the pain. I hear stammers, and gasps, and wheezes, and I am making some of the sounds I hear.

I am suddenly a part of the world again...and I never want to feel that loneliness of death ever again.
