Syfany

Syfany André Moravia, Czech Republic 2022 André

Easy-drinking Czech red, made from the local André grape which is similar to a Zweigelt in that it's a cross of Saint-Laurent and Blaufränkisch. A year in acacia barrels help develop the flavours in this wine, giving way to dried cranberry and prune, black pepper and fresh blue and black fruits. A high acidity pet nat with full, enveloping tannins and a nice savoury finish. Dangerously drinkable.

Syfany are a Czech winery that source everything locally, including the acacia wood for their barrels. They take a natural approach, using native yeasts and minimising sulphur use at bottling. An experimental winery that uses different grapes, plots and vintages to create unique and mesmerising wines that stand out from the crowd.

Thomas Stopfer Zeigelt

2019 Thomas Stopfer Zweigelt a 15-dollar bargain 

Zweigelt is one of those obscure Vitis vinifera varieties that gets passed by in favor of its more famous parents, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. Yet this hybrid reveals notes similar to a good Pinot Noir, providing the same light-bodied texture but with more peppery notes. 

History of the Grape

Zweigelt is a hybrid grape created in 1922 by the controversial Austrian entomologist Friedrich Zweigelt. While a brillant viticulture specialist, Dr. Zweigelt is personally steeped in deep controversy as a strong German nationlist he enthusiastically embraced Nazism joining the Austrian branch of the NSDP and remained a loyal Nazi even after the party was banned. In 1938 Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany and Zweigelt was appointed as director of Klosterneuburg State School of Viticulture, Fruit Growing and Horticulture. Zweigelt was an Reich official of Nazi Germany and represented them at the international viticulture congress in 1939. Even with the collapse of Nazism in 1945 Zweigelt was stubborn in his beliefs, he was held in detention till 1948 until Austrian president Karl Renner pardoned him. He would fade away into obscurity, dying in 1964. 

Taste Profile 

Despite the sordid reputation and history of its creator, this wine has much to offer. The Thomas Stopfer Zweigelt opens with a fresh aroma of red fruit and pepper. On the palate, it is light-bodied with low tannins. However, it still opens with the bright fruity flavors and earthiness that this variety is known for. Further flavors of raspberry and cinnamon, along with notes of chocolate and pepper, open up as this wine gets a chance to air . Overall, this is a fine example of an obscure grape, and despite being a little light is an excellent bargain. 

I give this wine a solid 72/100

Immer, wenn ich zum Hörsaal 41 hinaufgehe, dort, wo nie jemand ist, steht in einer Ecke ein schüchterner Exhibitionist mit einem Trenchcoat. Wenn ich vorbei gehe, öffnet er den Mantel und zeigt mir seinen Schatz. Er ist noch ganz jung und erinnert mich verdammt an meinen Adam. Vielleicht ist er es ja wirklich, ich gehe immer schnell weg, obwohl ich ihn am liebsten in den Arm nähme. MS hat zu mir gesagt, dass er nicht sterben wolle, bevor er die Liebe seines Lebens getroffen hätte und weil er Mustafa kennen gelernt hatte, war er bereit. Ich sage es deshalb, weil ich Adam kennen gelernt habe.

Als ich ging, war überhaupt niemand mehr im Wasser außer ihm. Er war ganz verlassen. Ich gehe jetzt schlafen, der Rotwein aus dem Kamptal schmeckt wie Lambrusco, ist aber ein Zweigelt, auf jeden Fall macht er schläfrig. Ich war mir sicher, dass Adam heute nicht im Schwimmbad sein wird, deshalb habe ich mir Zeit gelassen, war um halb oder dreiviertel Eins im Wasser, bin zuerst auf die Toilette gegangen, sah sein Brett nicht, weil ich beim tiefen Ende vorbei ging. Als ich wieder in die Halle kam, sah ich ihn in seiner siebten Bahn schwimmen. Jedes Mal, wenn er sich auf die Seite gedreht hat, hat er zu mir hergeschaut, aber das täuscht. Ich weiß nicht, ob er mich gesehen hat, ich habe ihn angelächelt, weil ich so froh war, dass er doch anwesend war. Er muss das Brett vergessen haben oder er hatte es bei sich, habe wieder nicht gesehen, was er damit macht beim Schwimmen. Es war kurz vor Eins, bin losgeschwommen, aber gleich wieder stehengeblieben, weil mich die Schüler genervt haben. Adam ist weiter und weiter geschwommen, einmal bin ich unten angekommen und habe aus den Augenwinkeln gesehen, dass er sein Brett zwischen seinen Oberschenkeln hervor holt. Ich konnte aber nicht stehen bleiben, weil am Beckenrand lauter Schüler standen, habe gehört, wie die Lehrerin zu ihnen sagt, dass sie diese Dame nicht belästigen sollen.

Bin wieder nach oben geschwommen, wütend, weil ich wusste, dass er jetzt gehen wird. Als ich beim tiefen Ende war und mich umgedreht habe, sah ich, dass er mir winkt, er war schon bei der Treppe, die zu den Garderoben führt, hat auf eine imaginäre Uhr gezeigt, um mir zu sagen, dass er es eilig habe. Habe zurückgewinkt, da ist er verschwunden. Ich hätte beinahe geweint beim Zurückschwimmen, habe ihn verdächtigt, dass er absichtlich früher gekommen ist, um mich nicht zu treffen, habe gerätselt, warum er so früh weggelaufen ist. Musste er wieder ins Theater? Es war erst ein Uhr zehn. Ich bin ungerecht, am Donnerstag kommt er sonst nie, vielleicht ist er ja wegen mir gekommen, ich war so traurig, dass ich kaum atmen konnte, bin nur zwei Kilometer geschwommen und auch gegangen.

Habe geträumt, dass ich mit einem Mann in einem Gebäude bin, das sehr, sehr viele Stockwerke hat. Wir wollen zusammen schwimmen gehen und suchen das Hallenbad, das sich in einem der vielen Stockwerke befinden muss. Wir fahren mit dem Lift auf und ab, bis wir es endlich finden. Wir müssen uns umziehen, also trennen. Ich gehe in einen riesigen Raum, in dem lauter Mäntel hängen. Habe Angst, meine Kleider nicht mehr zu finden, habe Angst, meinen Schwimmgefährten zu verlieren. Ich fahre mit dem Lift wieder hinunter, um ihn und das Wasserbecken zu suchen. Es muss im Erdgeschoss sein. Er ist dort, wir fahren wieder zusammen mit dem Lift hinauf. Ein fremder Junge setzt sich auf meinen Schoß, weil es zu wenig Platz gibt. Adam sagt immer: Es ist zu wenig Platz. Ich habe zu ihm gesagt, dass er bei mir schwimmen solle, bei mir gibt es genug Platz. Ich habe ihn noch nie in Kleidern gesehen, was hätte mir das alles über ihn verraten! Warum hat sich ein fremder Mann zu mir auf den Schoß gesetzt und nicht er? Wir waren beide pikiert, weil wir uns nicht kannten und so nahe zusammen sein mussten. Ich möchte mit Adam leben, aber in meinem Leben gibt es gar keinen Platz für ihn und keine Zeit. Was hat Mischa immer gesagt? We are two ocean-steamers passing by….

Weingut Werlitsch Morillon Vom Opok Styria, Steiermark, Austria 2020/2021 Morillon (Chardonnay)

Austrian wine is for those who like delicately perfumed aromatics and mouth-watering acidity. Austria grows wines with great elegance and acidity, because the country is on the same parallel as northern France and Canada. The majority of Austria’s production is dedicated to Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. As such, Austria is known for its minerally whites and spicy reds.

The Werlitsch winery sits at the bottom of steep vineyards that surround the winery like an amphitheater. These steep ridges produce strong winds that create the ideal climate for Morillon grapes. This Morillon is grown in ‘opok’, a limestone rich clay soil that is the bedrock of Styrian hills. The salinity adds freshness and finesse.

The wine is 100% Morillon, the Styrian term for Chardonnay. The wine has mouthwatering acidity and is fresh, with flavours of green apple, quince, honeysuckle and mint. Very acidic compared to a French Chardonnay.

Biodynamically farmed, it spends up to 2 years on its lees in oak. Despite the creaminess on the nose, it is light and fine on the palate with enveloping and energetic texture.

Quite funky on the nose, bright acidity, aperitif kind of wine.

A natural oaked Chardonnay with a long saline finish.

Tasting notes: burnt butter, salty minerals, smokiness, quince, ripe apples, thyme, grapefruit

Pairing: white meats, soft cheeses, white fish

Anton Bauer 2017 Zweigelt: Lighthearted, fresh, energetic, gentle tannins, racy acidity, and incredibly food-friendly—what’s not to like about Austria's most widely planted red grape. This bottling greets you with vibrant red berries, tart plum, a hint of graphite, and a dash of black pepper on the finish. I enjoyed a glass while cooking and later with turkey meatloaf with a BBQ glaze and sautéed veggies.
