Titans West (a Post-Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths team)
Kid Flash aka Ace West & Wallace Rudulph West
R-iko aka Riko Sheridan
Power Girl aka Tanya Spears
Roundhouse aka Billy Wu & William Wu
Gorilla Gregg
Tress
Power Boy aka Matt Price
Thoughts:
Kid Flash, Ace West, is primed to take center stage in his own book, and what better book than Titans West?  The Flashes have a tendency of being written as impulsive-support characters in the middle of a fight. Ace could approach the Speed Force a little differently; I’d like him to stand out. Instead of racing ahead of the team, he gets selected to lead his own team, which means he’ll have to learn to stand still and work on strategy. Using his super speed, Ace will be able to plan and pivot at the speed of lightning all while constantly coordinating with his team with split second precision.
Another angle I’d like to explore would be a Flash & Gorilla team-up. Gorilla Gregg has the same telepathic powers as his Uncle Grodd. Imagine Gregg in the field keeping the team in contact via psychic link. Imagine the types of things teenagers would probably want to keep private from their friends. Imagine the ways Gregg and Ace could potentially combine their powers; seven minds moving at the speed of light.
When I looked at R-iko’s wiki entry, the trivia listed a Fuefollet album cover on her bedroom wall. A real-world anecdote about me, I’m from South Louisiana and have listened to Cajun, Creole, Swamp Pop, and Zydeco music my whole life. Fuefollet is sort of a big deal for us and our cultural preservation attempts. Another fact about me, I work at a small TV station, KLFY, and in the past, we used to spotlight live local acts. Sometimes the only way for local bands to get recordings of their work, or well-lit photography of them playing, would be at our studio. Some album covers featured KLFY TV10 images in the background. Pressed vinyl got shipped around, some reaching as far as Japan where the band Zydeco Kicks found and fell in love with the music. The band has since visited the area and were excited to visit the station which they were very much aware of due to album covers. Anyway, I thought that was cool and now I feel connected to R-iko.
Power Girl needs a comeback. The more Super adjacent characters the better, so we don’t have to keep rebooting and convoluting the main cast. I think in the field Ace would call her PG.
I don’t know that much about Roundhouse other than he has a solid and easily recognizable design. Oh and I’ve always liked Bouncing Boy’s powers so...
Tress looks really fun to draw, and she’s a bit of a blank slate in terms of backstory and motivations so that’s cool. She’s like Marvel’s Medusa, DC’s Godiva, and Beast Boy all rolled into one.
Matt Price is likely Apokoliptian as evidenced by his omega beam vision. Exploring how absolute power corrupts would be fun. I’m seeing shades of Anakin Skywalker and Ben Solo as potential archetypes to start with.

International Country Music Day
International Country Music Day, on September 17, is a day of festivals, concerts, dances, and all kinds of other events that celebrate country music, to honor this distinctly American genre. Today is about the music. It’s popular to joke about country songs being all about losing your dog, your truck, your job, and your girlfriend, but in reality, the breadth and depth of the genre offer something for everyone, from Williams’ ‘Hey Good Lookin’,’ to New Country songs like Toby Keith’s ‘Red Solo Cup.’ On International Country Music Day, dip into the wellspring and take a sip.
History of INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC DAY
Though International Country Music Day has only been a worldwide phenomenon since 2003, country music itself evolved during the 1920s in the U.S. The music form is the result of a mix of Delta blues, Appalachian folk, Cajun music, Creole Zydeco, and others. Today, people often think of the genre as “Old Country,” which has been wildly popular since the 1950s.
Artists during this golden period such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and of course Hank Williams, gave fans unforgettable stories and glimpses into the struggles of a hardscrabble life. Speaking of Hank Williams, the day chosen for this holiday, September 17, is Williams’ birthday. It’s easy to guess the country music icon left a wealth of quality country songs as his legacy, such as ‘Cold Cold Heart’ and ‘Lost Highway.’
As a matter of fact, all 35 of the singles Williams recorded made the top ten on the Billboard Country & Western Bestsellers chart, with 11 of them reaching the number one spot. Mention the phrase country music, and don’t be surprised if the name Hank Williams is in the first sentence of the response. We believe he’d be honored at the association of his birth date with International Country Music Day.
New country, on the other hand, is a subgenre represented by a similarly talented pool of singers and songwriters, including Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, and many more, with a younger generation of country musicians taking up the mantle more and more as time goes by. Country music shows no signs of slowing down or going away, so take International Country Music Day as a chance to discover why so many people around the world love country music.
INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC DAY timeline
1923
Birth of a legend
Hank Williams is born, eventually to personify country music for millions of fans.
1963
Can you name three other songs by him?
Johnny Cash records “Ring of Fire,” capturing the attention of a huge number of radio listeners who may not have ventured into the world of country music.
2003
Synchronicity
The first official International Country Music Day is kicked off, coordinating hundreds of concerts and festivals worldwide to occur on the same day, September 17.
2017
Hard to knockdown
Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” spends 34 weeks at number one on the country charts.
INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC DAY FAQs
Is country music popular outside the US?
While the bulk of country listening takes place in the U.S., there has been a 21% increase in the share of country music streaming outside America since 2015.
What does country music represent?
Country music is defined as “a style and genre of largely string-accompanied American popular music having roots in the folk music of the Southeast and cowboy music of the West, usually vocalized, generally simple in form and harmony, and typified by romantic or melancholy ballads accompanied by acoustic or electric.
Outside the States, where is country music the most popular?
Perhaps partly because of the shared language, the U.K, Australia, and Canada boast the largest numbers of faithful country music fans outside the U.S.
INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC DAY Activities
Attend a concert or festival: After 2020’s pandemic, you’ll once again be able to join the crowd at a country music performance, have an adult beverage, and give line dancing a shot. If you want to get to the heart of country music and really experience it first-hand, a trip to Nashville, Tennessee — considered the epicenter of country music — wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Pick up a musical instrument: There are many to choose from other than the usual guitar. Decide to learn a new skill and try out the fiddle, the dobro, the steel guitar, the banjo, the harmonica — the list goes on. There’s no better way to show you love country music than to play some yourself.
Listen at homeIf you’re like us, the accessibility of all types of music at a click is one of our favorite reasons to love the internet. On International Country Music Day, go on a surfing journey and listen to the old country standards and the new country hits. If you’re normally a listener of “everything except country,” make an exception. We’ll bet you do find something you like.
5 Amazing Facts About Johnny Cash
Put it on “shuffle”: Asked what albums he’d have with him if stranded on a desert island, Cash listed a roster that includes Emmylou Harris, Beethoven, and Bob Dylan.
Lucky seven?: Despite having been arrested a total of seven times — some of them on drug charges — Cash only ever spent one night behind bars.
An apt alias: Before reaching his fame, Cash only ever went by the first name “J.R.” with the initials remaining ambiguous in terms of what they stood for, and only adopted the name “John” when an Air Force recruiter would not accept initials for a first name.
“You may now kiss …”: In the 1970s, Cash spent two years studying divinity and became an ordained minister in time to preside over his daughter’s marriage.
Not just a songwriter: In 1986, Cash published a novel called “Man In White,” a fictional account of a period in the life of the apostle Paul.
Why We Love INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC DAY
Lots of country songs are fun and funny: Stories are indeed at the heart of country songs, but not all of them are about heartbreak. Take a look at the song “Ticks” by Brad Paisley. “I’d like to see you out in the moonlight / I’d like to kiss you way back in the sticks / I’d like to walk you through a field of wildflowers / And I’d like to check you for ticks.” And that’s just one example. Listened to with an open mind, country music can often make you smile.
There’s nothing like a live concert: You can be the owner of an artist’s entire discography and have a dozen songs memorized to sing along with, but to truly experience a country musician’s personality and heart, at least one live concert is de rigueur. We love to feel that electric charge in the air!
It’s truly American: The U.S. may have the right to claim that rock and roll originated within its borders, but country & western, also quintessentially American, predates rock by some twenty years. To celebrate country music is to celebrate American history.

Higher Learning Commission Conference Wrap Up
The #HLC Higher Ground conference came to a tragic end yesterday as the hopes and dreams of this educator were dashed on the rocks of bullshit. Yeah. The bullshit was so hard, it became rock-like.
It turns out that plenty of people went to the conference to fuck off and go catch one of the myriad sports teams in the Chicagoland area instead of actually coming there to learn about trends in higher ed or about assessment or accreditation as was the fucking point of the thing.
Of course, others used it as an opportunity to pad a CV (which is college for resume), with the line "attended HLC conference." Someone actually said that to me. "You can put this on your CV. You were here." Right. I can, but should I? I mean isn't "attended HLC conference" the equivalent of saying, "held down chair in room full of people?" I am not going to write, "successfully rode the Blue Line from the airport with luggage" or "ate overpriced breakfast without spilling coffee on crotch" on my CV, but I guess I could.
My CV actually could have "presented at two conferences" because that would be true. It is a HUGE big fucking deal to stand in a room of like-minded educators and share wisdom with them and most importantly, engage in conversation with them. Both times I presented, I talked for 15-20 minutes MAX and then I opened up the floor to conversation which lasted well past the appointed time. I showed people how to do things and they asked questions. It was sort of like, and this is going to blow your mind, teaching. Some people came to present which looks even BETTER on the CV. There are CV points and attending is worth 2, but presenting is worth 5 (not spilling coffee on your crotch is worth 1).
Unfortunately, only two of the 15 sessions I went to felt like I was learning anything at all. The rest could have been an email. Like, for real. They could have emailed the slide decks and I could have read them, and got all the information because they fucking read off fucking slide decks.
Slide Deck is the name of my zydeco band. I play punk accordion and slowly read the lyrics while they are projected on a white screen in black words, one line at a time, with no animation. #slidedeck
I would argue though for those of us who went to this conference with the thought in mind that we would learn something important to take back to our campuses, we were all profoundly disappointed. It turns out the conference exists as a sort of educational fight club. People who don't get to go, imagine what it could be. People who get to go, know it is bullshit, but they don't tell. They just got a free trip to America's Second City with the number one pizza. Don't fuck it up for the rest of us. You don't talk about HLC because if you do, everyone is in on the secret that it is a huge waste of time and money and if you do tell, someone will likely kick your ass.
4 days of metaphorical circle jerks and reach arounds and yet, there were no happy endings.

4. 3 topics you’d love to learn more about
Hmmmmmmmm
This is hard because I've never had the time or incentive to think about it.
#1. I recently learned of zydeco, a genre of music that combines tunes of French origin with elements of Caribbean music and the blues and that features guitar, washboard, and accordion. I suppose genres of music and music history I could brush up on
#2. What goes on behind the scenes of creating a series for public entertainment. Do they have everything figured out or do they continuously write and draft as they await news of whether or not new seasons will be ordered.
#3. Muscle anatomy: how muscle knots are formed and how to treat/get rid of them and improve blood flow. It comes from living with two chronically physically tense and stressed people (plus my mom has asked me to rub her poor scar tissued back for years)
6. 3 characters that inspire you
#1. Tanjiro Kamado - Because he's so kind to everybody, even the demons he kills so they can go out with dignity and compassion since they were humans once themselves
#2. Thorfinn Karlsenfi - Oh my God. Just..... How he's sworn off violence and he's using his attained strength to pass on his wisdom so no one else would end up like how he used to be: a mindless murderer
#3 Atsushi Nakajima - He had the worst cards dealt to him at the start of his life: grew up hated by everybody and was kicked out of the orphanage to fend for himself with no life skills. Despite all of that, he has the undeniable will to survive and is able to see the good in other people and the joys that come from just living
31. 3 types of flowers you love the most
I don't really have a green thumb, so I can only name the flowers that stand out to me the most
#1. Cherry blossoms
#2. Lilacs
#3. Daisies

If anyone would like to be added to/removed from my permanent tag list, just shoot me an ask!
When you’d left home at the crack of dawn for a job interview— which had gone surprisingly well thanks to Starbucks and an extra shot of espresso— you’d needed something far warmer than the lightweight blazer you’d grabbed on your way out the door. Now, just before noon, you had shed your blazer that had proven to be insufficient earlier, yet you still felt hot in just your sleeveless blouse and pencil skirt. You thought a perk of moving farther up north would be the mild, temperate climate. It was your first Indian summer, though you’d lived in the area for a year, and you had decided it was bullshit. What had happened to the cool, crisp autumn you’d fallen in love with a year ago?
When you pulled open the heavy glass door of the post office, a cold blast of air  but your skin, and you stepped inside quickly. The air conditioning felt absolutely fantastic, and you briefly wondered if people would notice if you lingered for awhile, just to soak up the cool temperature, maybe until you were even a little chilly.
You smiled at the thought as you arrived at your box, smack in the middle of the wall of post office boxes belonging to other people. There was a wall of boxes on your left, another on the back wall— yours on the right—and there were more just down the corridor. You rummaged in your bag to find the tiny brass key for P.O. Box 257, tucked away in a zippered compartment in your purse. After the third time it had fallen off your key ring, you decided to hide it away in a more safe, reliable place.
After locating your key and unlocking your box, you stared at the unexpected abundance of envelopes that had piled up over the last week.  Who knew so many people still send paper mail?  It took two times reaching into the small box to pull out every piece of mail, mostly tuning out to be junk or credit card companies offering you low interest rates. Only then was the box empty— almost. Retrieving the one remaining piece of mail at the bottom of your box, you smiled as you realized who it was from, locking the box back before giving the postcard a good look. It was rare that Ryan sent you postcards.
They were usually letters tucked away inside envelopes, words hidden for only you to see. The decorative side of the card displayed a vintage style print, a drawing of a wooden fence leading out onto a beach of white sand bordering sky blue waters. Welcome to Orange Beach! it boasted in a series of light green block letters, fading into yellow.
You flipped the card around to see Ryan’s familiar handwriting, a mixture of print that sometimes led off to a few letters of scrawled script:
Just passing through. All the sunshine brings you to mind. See you soon.
You could hear the cadence of his voice, the dropping off of the G at the end of certain  words, the slight twang that tugged at his pronunciation of vowels. Your smile grew into a grin as you glanced at the postmark, reading September 3rd. Your eyes widened into saucers as you recalled today’s date. Ryan’s postcard must have gotten lost in the shuffle of the mail circuit— the post date was over two weeks ago.
You shrugged it off and secured your key back into the small pocket on the inside of your purse just before tucking Ryan’s postcard inside. With an armful of the rest of your mail, you braced yourself for the assault of the inevitable sweltering  heat.
 Fucking Indian summer.
                                             ***          ***          ***
Ryan was just passing through after a rousing five days in Virginia,  where he’d met up with Georgie. Where he was going next was still on the table. Instead of restless, he felt fulfilled, still riding the high of busking with his close friend, both of them splitting the money they’d made halfway. He and Georgie played well together, and it usually paid off. He’d shedded his coat and hoodie, managing to stuff the hoodie into his pack and hang the thicker layer around one of the straps of the large bag. His ever-present guitar case, the black leather wearing off around the edges, was clutched tightly in his right hand as he paused near a crosswalk. Squinting in the sunlight, he was grateful for the small shadow the bill of his cap provided.  With the transition of the streetlights from green to yellow to red, he crossed the street and walked one more block to reach the post office.
He was low on stamps, had just two left to be exact. Ryan kept in touch with a handful of people and had a flip phone, but he preferred writing letters. They felt more personal, gave him the time to think about what he was saying and write them in a way that he’d stumble on while talking. There were also times when his phone would be dead for days.
It was mid-July, the thick of the summer, and he could feel beads of sweat forming along his forehead, though it was before noon. The old government building was once red-bricked, but had been washed with white in order to modernize the place. The upkeep added a nice touch as well, neatly trimmed bushes contrasting against the bright paint. He pulled at the metal handle on the right of a set of non-paned French doors, the temperature of the air inside bringing instant relief. The building was eerily quiet, the only sounds lowered voices at one end of the building, the light scraping of paper against metal as patrons picked up their mail. Turning toward the sounds of conversation, he walked down the corridor and turned with the layout of the building.
He was surprised at the line of people waiting, a few solitary people in casual attire, one or two dressed in clothing appropriate for the workplace littered between. There was a mother with a stroller holding a sleeping toddler, an elderly couple, and one woman alone in front of him. He nodded politely as you turned your head to the side in curiosity in order to see what type of brave soul had come up behind you to patiently wait for their turn. You saw a man who was about your age, and offered him a friendly smile, turning around to face him.
Ryan instantly found you absolutely stunning. Your smile brightened your entire face, your features all striking, as if they’d been hand-picked specifically for you..
“Good morning,” you said, greeting him casually as if the two of you had been acquainted a long time ago, old friends. “How about that heat wave?”
Ryan chuckled, surprised at your unaffected manner and genuine friendliness. He noticed the way you surveyed his clothing, eyes quickly glancing to your guitar case before lifting to  his face again. Your expression hadn’t changed or faltered a bit, that smile still in place. That was a rarity, something Ryan hadn’t come across in quite some time.
He returned your smile with a slightly crooked smile of his own. There’s some thin’ about this woman, he thought to himself.  She’s authentic. A good heart, a kind soul. A fire burning within her. Ryan thought that if she was burning bright, he’d volunteer to stand a bit too close to her flames and would pay no mind to the sharp sting of a burn.
“Mornin’,” he replied good-naturedly. “I think I’m used to all sorts of weather, but then a heat wave hits and reminds me I’m wrong.” Ryan looked at you with warm eyes, spoke with a low drawl that made you weak. “Name’s Ryan, pleasure to meet you.”
                                          ***       ***         ***
It was eerily quiet when you got home, but the silence was just what you needed. You felt like you needed about three showers to wash away the sweat and sticky humidity that clung to your skin, and the only thing that delayed you was the kicking off of your shoes and dumping your purse and mail onto your couch.
After your shower, water temperature lukewarm at best, you felt human again, revitalized. You’ve mulled around ideas for dinner in the back of your mind, made a quick detour into your bedroom, and returned to that couch you’d tossed your things upon, holding a shoebox. Opening the box as you sat and balancing it in your lap, you reached for your purse, pulling out the postcard you’d received, albeit two weeks too late.
Lifting the thick stack of envelopes that were quickly outgrowing their box, you slipped the postcard picture-down into the bottom of the shoebox. Smiling softly, you brought your legs up, crossing them like a child, and plucked several envelopes from the middle of your stack, devouring the letters that you’d read dozens of times before.
Y/N,
Made a quick decision to hop off in New Orleans before heading off toward Chicago. The train station here is directly connected to a streetcar line that leads straight into the French quarter. Maybe I’ll take a ride next time. Maybe you’ll take one with me.
I thought about you most of the day, the way you’d stop to listen to a three-piece zydeco band in Jackson square. I imagine how you’d look with powdered sugar on the tip of your nose from beignets, and the slow nod of approval when you taste real, authentic gumbo.
I heard the roaring of a streetcar clacking over its tracks and knew that I needed to write to you that very  second. I miss you, Y/n. Wish it was me & you riding that streetcar to wherever it would take us.
                                                                                           Ryan
Have you ever been to Vegas, Y/N? Beyond all the neon lights, the ritzy hotels and big-name shows, the electricity of the city shifts. Contrary to what other people might think, it’s a great place to play music, beyond the strip, along a street lined with benches and a slight change of pace..  more of a scenic, less chaotic feeling. People stop, and they listen. Really listen. Sometimes I’ll get accolades instead of money, but that’s what it’s all about— telling stories with hope that people can enjoy them and relate.
It’s time for me to go out for the day. Can’t wait until you’re the audience I’m singing to.
                                                                                          Ryan
Y/N,
I’m just writing to tell you that Memphis not only has the best bbq, but also the best peach cobbler. Georgia’s got nothing on Tennessee.
                                                                                             Ryan
Sometimes, when you really thought about it in retrospect, it was wild. In the space of time that you and Ryan shared as a unit, an entire human could be born; the biology of. growing from cells into a living, breathing, viable human being. An entire new life could be created.
And throughout the last nine months, you, with Ryan’s help, had created a new life of your own. You had a boyfriend, one who was absent far more than he was around, yet managed to never weaken his connection. No matter where in the country Ryan’s trains took him, he’d write. There was no way for you to write back to a man with no address, not in a manner of space and time anyway. But in your new life, none of it was liner. The only time that mattered was when Ryan was there with you, and that was when he got your letters. You always responded, saving your words to give to him next time.
Next time. You slid folded paper back into envelopes, a grin breaking into your face as you heard the sound of heavy boots over your wooden porch. Dropping Ryan’s letters back into the shoebox right on time, you replaced the lid as the door opened and shut. There was a soft thudding of his guitar case being set into a corner, and you stood to pad through the house in bare feet.
You met Ryan in the kitchen, watching him down almost an entire cold bottle of water. You adored this man who had needed to buy stamps while stopped in your town, stepping into the post office you’d been waiting in, all by chance. You had never been happier than when Ryan was home.
“Good afternoon,” you greeted him. As he set aside his bottle of water, you rose to your tiptoes to give him a kiss, his lips chilled from the water. Snaking your arms around him, you leaned back and looked at him, a playful glint in your eyes. “How about that heat wave?”

#10yrsago Zydepunks' "Finisterre" -- a CD that's like Flogging Molly crossed with the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band performed in zydeco time
Tumblr media
Last week's review of Top Shelf Jazz's new CD "Fast and Louche" sparked a suggestion in the comments from AnoniMouse to check out The Zydepunks, a band that bills itself as "New Orleans' Favorite Cajun Irish Jewish Punk band." The band were kind enough to send along the MP3s of their latest CD, the 2008 release "Finisterre " and it is some deeply kick-ass stuff.
Combining sweet, old-fashioned zydeco with Flogging-Molly-esque Celt-punk and upbeat klezmer is an improbable idea, but goddamn it works. Especially on uptempo tracks like "One More Chance," "Long Story Short" and "Papirossen In Gan Eden," (the last performed in Yiddish with some major Celtic and zydeco flavor) the Zydepunks make me want to get up on my chair and shout and wave my arms in the air. Thanks for the tip, AnoniMouse!

Rougarou Pt. 2
Peter backed away, body low, snarling at Stiles. He was a hunter; had to be. There was no other reason for a human to know what he was. He had been right in his suspicions all along.
“Stop that, I ain’t no hunter,” Stiles said, spitting the word like poison as he set the food on the table, accent thickening with emotion. His right hand was twitching, like he wanted to cross himself. “I know what you are, wolfie, cause I’m a part of your world too. I grew up on my maman’s stories of the wolves that live in the swamp, among other things. Didn’t take me long to figure out y'all were real.” Peter wasn’t swayed, ears pinned back, still growling.
Stiles, for his part, didn’t look offended. He just shrugged and went to sit at the table, propping his hand up on his chin and leveling Peter with the most unimpressed look the wolf. “Y'know, my best friend’s a rougarou, too. Bitten, though. But you a born wolf, huh? That’s why you turn into a wolf.”
He was smart, Peter would give him that. Not many knew that little fact, believing it to just be something werewolves had to learn. They did, but they could only learn if they had the genetics for it, and that only came from the old werewolf bloodlines. The first families of wolves that had been blessed by the moon. The Hales were one of the oldest.
“I know you don’t trust me, and that’s fine, I get it. I wouldn’t trust me either, in your position. But I’m really not gon’ hurt you; had plenty of chances at doin’ that already. Don’t you think I woulda killed you already if I wanted to? It’d have been easier to kill you when you were out that try to fight a wolf almost as big as me.” He did make a very valid point. And Peter couldn’t hear a lie in his heartbeat, his pulse beating a little fast, but even. Like a hummingbird’s wing. Peter lowered his hackles and shuffled forward slowly. “Atta boy. Now, I’d appreciate it if you’d shift that furry butt of yours into something a little less hairy, It’s only polite, after all.”
Peter looked at the steaming bowl of gumbo longingly, stomach cramping in hunger, then put his head down; he didn’t know if he could shift back. Hadn’t been able to all the times he’s tried since he left. He turned and walked out of the kitchen, steps slow and forlorn, to go lay back down on his pile of blankets. He’d been trapped in the body of his wolf for so long, relying on it to keep him alive, that he didn’t remember how to turn back into the man.
Stiles followed him not even a minute later, soft mouth downturned into a frown at Peter’s behavior. “You can’t shift, can you?” he asked after staring at the wolf for several long moments. Peter’s plaintive whine must have been answer enough, because Stiles’ expression turned sad. “I’m sorry,” he said, watching Peter curl up and tuck his nose under his tail, apetite forgotten.
At least until Stiles left, only to come back with the gumbo. He set both bowls on the ground in front of Peter, then briefly left again to get another for himself. When he returned Peter hadn’t moved. “Hey,” he said, sitting on the floor beside Peter and reaching out, nudging his side. “You gotta eat, wolf. You look like you’re too seconds from withering away.”
Peter lifted his head, the scent of the food enticing. It was demeaning eating in this form, out of a bowl like a dog, but the gumbo was good enough that he couldn’t bring himself to care—although the meat didn’t taste quite like chicken or pork, the texture off and flavor masked too much by seasoning for Peter to discern exactly what it was.
At least Stiles was gracious. He could have easily been making insensitive jokes about Peter’s state, rather than trying to help him. He looked like the kind of person that didn’t show much restrain with what he said often.
Satisfied that Peter was eating, Stiles crossed his legs and ate his own food.
It was honestly impressive how much a wolf could eat when he really wanted to. Peter managed to go through three bowls with ease, and they weren’t small either. Stiles was entertained watching him, fingers stroking over Peter’s side when the wolf seemed friendly enough to not bite his hand off.
“You’ve been like this for a long time, haven’t you?” he asked softly, carding his fingers through Peter’s fur. The wolf made a sound of agreement, jerking his head in a slight nod. Stiles gingerly touched the edges of Peter’s burns, where his fur gave way to seared skin. “Did someone do this to you?” Again, Peter nodded. Stiles’ heart broke for the poor wounded wolf.
“Hunters?” This time Peter growled, and Stiles nodded to himself. “I’m sorry, wolf.” If her ever shifted back into a human, and knew who it was that had tried to kill him in such a terrible way, then Stiles would gladly help the wolf get justice.
Peter was laying in his makeshift bed, head resting on the paws as he watched Stiles work. There was zydeco playing softly, the human swaying his hips and tapping his fingers to the beat as he worked. Peter got the impression he normally played his music loud, and he was glad Stiles had it at a wolf-friendly volume.
He wished he could ask what it was Stiles was making with all those herbs and powders and strange-smelling liquids being ground and combined together into some kind of paste. He didn’t have to wait long to find out, Stiles coming over with a bowl of the stuff in hand, along with an armful of cloth bandages.
“Don’t bite me, okay?” he said, looking at Peter meaningfully as he crouched down. “You’ll start healing again in a few days now that you’re no longer on the run, but this will help kick start the process. So be nice, yeah?”
Peter growled softly, causing Stiles to smile. He knew by now that Peter wouldn’t actually bite him. Much. His wrist was still smarting from earlier, but he was pretty sure Peter’s sudden attack was more from being unexpectedly touched, than wanting to actually do him harm. “Be a good boy and there might be a few treats in it for you,” he teased, laughing when Peter snapped at him.
Stiles stroked Peter’s neck, coaxing him to roll over and display his wounded side, baring the gruesome-looking burns. Stiles, for his part, didn’t cringe. He just picked up the bowl of the watery poultice and used the brush in it to gently paint the mixture over Peter’s wounds. Peter was tensed, waiting for it to hurt, but the pain never came. He was starting to think that there was more to Stiles than he originally thought, with the way he couldn’t feel pain when Stiles touched him.
Again, he was singing softly, one hand buried in Peter’s scruff, soothing him. Peter allowed himself to drift off to sleep, trusting Stiles not to hurt him.

Fan Crashes Car Into Club During P.O.D. Concert After Being Kicked Out From Venue
Two people were arrested earlier this week after they crashed a car into a Birmingham, Alabama club where P.O.D., FROM ASHES TO NEW and ALL GOOD THINGS were performing. The suspects allegedly drove their car into the Zydeco Bar shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Birmingham Police Department. After the crash, the suspects fled the scene before being taken into custody. Several…

A Lack Of Context
I asked Alexa to play some music from the Dr. John station. The response was “here’s a station for you based on Dr. John.” For those of you who are not familiar with Dr. John, he was a singer from New Orleans, kind of a Cajun Blues guy.
The music started with something from him and then one from a Zydeco band and then Aerosmith. Now I like Aerosmith but they would not be what I considered similar to Dr. John. Then the next song started…
It was Vanilla Ice.
The person responsible for the playlists at Amazon obviously is lacking a little context who these performers are. It feels like they just group all music prior to the year 2000 together. The same thing can be seen in the martial arts.
Many people teach the martial arts as if it is all the same. They don’t understand the difference between sport application and survival application. Teaching children for actual safety reasons where they should learn how to escape or teaching them punching and kicking for body movement. They are not the same.
Even the reactions we get online from someone watching a video of us teaching a drill meant to give the students a skill are often out of context. They yell that it would never work in a fight and say we don’t know what we’re talking about despite the probability they have never been in one.
Context is everything in an actual survival situation. The details of that moment are incredibly important. That moment has so many variables that it is impossible to say do this technique when they do this. You have to have a system of principles that can be applied to any situation to survive. But that’s not easy to do, it’s not easy to package up with a colorful belt and sell to you, so most don’t.
Shinobi Science is just that, a system of principles to help you understand the ninja martial arts, at a level where you can apply them to any situation. It wasn’t easy creating this system. It took twenty-seven years to get here.
And now we share it with people who want more than just a collection of things. We share it with people who want to explore the context of how it all works and apply it to their life. If you would like more click on the link below.
We look forward to training with you. We may even have Dr. John playing in the background if I get Alexa to work.
