The whole "Princess Peach and Mario are actually just good friends and not in a romantic relationship" thing and the way people have reacted to it is kind of a fascinating case study of hetero-normative biases now that I think about it. Like everyone saw a man and a woman who are regularly affectionate with each other, and saw it as a forgone conclusion that they were -to some degree- lovers, despite there being little evidence of an actual romantic relationship between them. Of course, it's also likely because Mario has repeatedly shown romantic interest in Peach, but the shock that people have displayed at the statement that they aren't romantically involved shows that most assumed this meant that they were in a committed relationship, regardless of possible indications against this (eg. Odyssey's ending in which Peach rejects a bouquet of flowers from both Mario and Bowser, typically read as a marriage proposal. This could indicate a number of things, either that they aren't in a relationship, they are but she isn't ready to marry yet, or she may not even feel the same way towards Mario.) My personal interpretation is that they're friends with feelings for each other, but haven't taken the step towards a full relationship for a number of possible reasons, such as the fact that Peach seems to get kidnapped every time she and Mario plan to spend alone time together, or the possible political ramifications involved in the marriage of a country's sovereign.

It's also Mario characters so it probably isn't that deep.
