I'm happy for the opportunity to illustrate my original take of one of my favorite summons for the FF Union for their book: "The Guardians of the Crystal - An Encyclopedia of Summons":

Some people on Bluesky asked me about the process of making this illustration, gonna try to describe it below:

Whenever I think about Final Fantasy's Leviathan the first image that comes to my mind is that of a giant blue sea serpent. But sometimes the mythological Leviathan is also represented as a big fish so it kind of makes sense that the most modern versions of Final Fantasy's Leviathans seem to be a mix of serpentine and fish features.

I started using the FFXV's design as reference, because I knew they also looked at several fish references for it:

(yep, I spent some time looking at weird fish heads for that one)

I also wanted Leviathan to look tough though, so I wanted to add some structure more similar to classic dragons to its head (snakes and fish seem to have a way too soft head, lol), so I followed the same path other official designs took and added some spikes, hard shells and horns to it. I also wanted to give it "glassy glowing eyes" cuz I feel like Leviathan usually "rests" on deeper waters and I remembered some abissal creatures have that weird eyes

I took FFXVI's Leviathan as reference as well, I like it's silhouette. It looks elegant but deadly. I prefer this version over the FFXIV one, specially the dorsal fins (The FFXIV dorsal design is full of long spikes which I feel like wouldn't be practical for Leviathan to swim with it's long serpentine body). However I grew up playing FFIX so I wanted to go for more pink/purplish tones rather than the red ones they used for FFXVI:

Once figured the design points I wanted to follow, it's impossible to not think about big waves when thinking about Leviathan, so I really went full golden ratio arc to decide how I wanted to make the waves lol. Then, because I wanted the head to be the center of attention I continued the arc with Leviathan's body and twisted it so the head would be on the "end" of the golden ratio arc.

I have finally finished my FFBE:WotV version of Ardyn (since SQEX took all the gachas that had him from me I'm just drawing a gacha art of him for myself) and I am never drawing this man's full outfit ever again (I said to myself, as I do it again in the future, probably)
