I still haven't been able to imagine a satisfying way for my version of Toothcup's first meeting in the reverse httyd au... simply because I believe that what happened in canon could somehow not have happened any other way??

Hiccup is never an active threat to a dragon from close up lol. He wouldn't be angrily charging at Toothless like Astrid or something which might provoke the Night Fury into blindsided aggression.

No, Hiccup would book it into the other direction, perhaps causing Toothless to follow and to pin him down, but never to fire a blast or directly harm him in any other way. Hiccup is too scrawny and afraid to warrant that, and Toothless and him are both too curious about each other for Toothless to go into a blind frenzy over him. Also, to Toothless, Hiccup is simply a rat that perhaps intentionally bit the bola mechanism which took him down, but then also gnawed through the nets. Even Toothless knows that Hiccup's success in taking him down was sheer luck and that it won't happen again.

Regarding an accident, I believe Toothless as a Night Fury is simply too agile, too precise and too cautious with his movements to accidentally hurt Hiccup in a drastic measure...? I mean, the guy can voluntarily retract his teeth and does so even while not fully trusting Hiccup yet. He strikes me as a cat that knows exactly how to pick up someone by their scruff without hurting them. Even a wild Toothless wouldn't bite at someone like Hiccup without caring for the force he uses. He's too much in control of his actions for that.

What I need is for Toothless to become so agitated that he doesn't care that it's Hiccup anymore, and with Hiccup being... well, Hiccup, that is just not possible. Toothless doesn't have any random pre-movie triggers either that Hiccup might have tapped into. The only thing we ever get to know about Toothless' past - and way, way later - is his feud with the skrill. Doesn't apply here.

The only solution I see for the moment is to introduce another human or dragon as a third character onscene who causes confusion, but that feels wrong too. The meeting in the woods is about the two of them. There needn't be someone else.

So yeah, I'm still chewing on this. How the heck does Hiccup get injured and it's indirectly Toothless' fault, but not so the dragon would immediately realize what he's done. Cuz neither Hiccup nor Toothless notice Toothless' missing tailfin in the og movie either. I want Toothless to take off, thinking he properly scared the brat off, only to return later to a battered and broken young boy. Still don't know how to go about that haha. Ideas welcome, I guess?

Rewatching httyd and I think I’m realizing something about Nightfuries.

So, Toothless spits up half the fish that Hiccup gave him. A kind of act of goodwill to reciprocate Hiccup’s. He does it again later after Test Drive.

It’s not something other dragons do when say, feeding the queen, because a Gronkle does the same and gets eaten. Sure, it could just be that it wasn’t enough for the queen, but we also know something about Nightfuries.

They don’t take food. It’s in the opening dialogue about them.

If a Nightfury took nothing back to the queen, I’m sure they’d be eaten too. But Toothless shows up, somewhat late, with the first pack of dragons that attack the village.

I think he followed the dragons because they were flying somewhere together, not because he was under orders from the queen.

So I think Nightfuries are meant to be pack hunters. They work together and feed each other.

He bonds to Hiccup very fast, and even when he could kill Hiccup, he doesn’t. Like when Hiccup lets him go. Like the very first flight when Hiccup attaches just the tail fin.

And sure, we know that dragons can tell when you mean harm and have weapons, but the Monstrous Nightmare still almost killed Hiccup in the beginning despite being unarmed.

Anyways, based on this evidence, I think Nightfuries are meant to be pack hunters, and the fact they are solitary is a tragedy. They’ve been wiped out that it changes their entire ability to exist with other dragons.

(And for the little dragons that come and steal his food, they’re not part of his pack. That’s why he defends his food. It’s like a lion protecting food from hyenas.)

Edit: OH, AND it’s a great reason why he’s so adept at enforcing boundaries and keeping the peace between pack members. It’s innate. Like wolves, they have to manage everyone’s emotions and actively try to avoid fights and de-escalate.
