The cinematography journey from zero to some what good.

I do not  have any previous experience.

Not in photography, not is filmography.

But I have a set of skills to be able to learn from watching and doing it. My name is Terence and I just set out on my journey from nothing.

During these crazy times with COVID-19 IS the mist, yes literally in the mist. I was inspired by the amazing cinematography that available to watch on YouTube. So here I am trying to do the same.

Two weeks ago, I think it was two weeks ago. Maybe three. I went on a walk in Central Park with my friend, Chris. Central Park in Burnaby and not New York but who's judging. With my Pixel 3 in hand and no knowledge, I decided bro just start filming and see if I can make something decent. I have shared my video here on Tumblr in hopes you can be critical to what i can do and try to get better.

I filmed for a few hours and bought sequence to lives in a few more hours. I had to google to do everything on DaVinici Resolve 16. Yes the free one, I’m cheap. From motion blur to post pan transitions. Of course, I don’t know how to color grade and LUTs. Who do you know I am?  I’m going to leave the color later this year because I still can film very well. 

I attempted to film everything on a gimbal but its totally not possible. Many used clips were all handheld. And I doing the filming, it feels so awkward when everyone around you is just thinking “wtf are these kids doing?” Well, I’m not a kid first of all... And I don’t know what I’m doing!

My biggest lessons from this experience:

not enough footage

auto AWB - didnt learn to fix this for the next video

30s not freaking over 2mins!

stop grind doesn't it enternaining

in-camera transitions needs to be planned out

color grading + LUTs make a big difference

smartphone cameras has a smartphone look

My next videos has to be better. It’s going to be showcasing my new keyboard that my brother has been so kind to buy for me. I not gonna tell you the exact one... but it’s so sick!! Cheery MX Blacks on a TKL. I said too much. I hope to post the video soon. 

With all the aim to do b roll, I has got me thinking about a roll. Everyone is doing a vlog but honestly, I am pretty camera shy. Well I think I am. I just don’t feel like I’m very interesting to be on camera. I guess eventually I’ll try so everyone can grill me on my looks along with my journey. 

I don’t mind getting grilled. It build character, right?
