I’ve been standing alongside unlabeled Dirk since day one. I personally view him as being attracted to exclusively men because I typically go by what’s canon/implied and whatnot but that doesn’t automatically attach the label “gay” onto him. He can be a man that is attracted to men without an associated label. I don’t use labels myself but I feel like some people that don’t grasp the fact that he doesn’t use labels because they’re so used to attaching a label to literally everything. I’m not saying that anything is wrong with that; label yourself as you please, I’m just saying that isn’t his deal and it never has been. He is a character that’s very clearly uncomfortable with attaching a label to his sexuality and I think that’s hardly ever recognized, even by die-hard fans of him.
He almost straight-up says that he doesn’t want to be called “gay” here. Literally. I think a lot of people took this as him just trying to brush off the fact that he doesn’t like girls to Roxy, but he has no reason to do that. He isn’t closeted about his sexuality. He has never been hesitant to say that he doesn’t like girls, so there’s no reason why he’d be doing so now.

He’s from the future. Way in the future. The term is outdated to him, so he doesn’t feel the need to use it. Not to mention the fact that future post-scratch Earth was ruled by the Condense, and all humans aside from Dirk and Roxy were eliminated and replaced with trolls. I think world building is a little important because trolls having no sexual preference and the lack of humans populating the future post-scratch Earth could maybe contribute to his perception of sexuality.
In technical terms, yeah, he would be classified as gay if he is exclusively attracted to men as a man, that’s obviously. However, he rejects that label and makes a point that he doesn’t want it attached to him, that’s what makes him unlabeled to me.
i hate that everyone calls dirk "gay" when he explicitly rejects that label in canon. and i especially hate it when people use "he's gay!! gay erasure!!!" as an excuse to attack people for shipping him with characters who aren't men. yeah, he seems pretty much exclusively attracted to men, but sexuality is complicated. dirk understands that. why don't the fans?
if you really care about respecting the character's sexuality, how about repsecting what THE CHARACTER says about HIS OWN sexuality
.

Sorry for no art recently, but y'all have to bear witness to fixation that is: continuously thinking about strider parallels until I die and/or spontaneously combust.
I think about these two panels an unhealthily amount of times per week, thanks to my friends observation that LoHaC is on the same side as Davesprite. I read into minor shit like this way too often and end up hating everything this comic has to offer in terms of referencing it's own plot countless amounts of times, whether intentional or not. Every time I think I'm free of the dastardly clutches of the emotional turmoil that is Homestuck; it ropes me back into it's vicious torture labyrinth.
