Alec looked at his ex-wife as she had said this. He had noticed the suspicious look on her face. If he hadn’t said he had been there for his daughter, she would have had something to say about it. Now the fact he had said he had been there for Daisy, she still looked as if she had something to say about it. He couldn’t win with her.
“Fine? Well, I am glad to hear that you are…fine.” He told her. Alec looked down at his drink and then back at her. He heard her mention seeing Ellie on TV and knew she would have something to say about this. “Its going as well as any case would be going at this point.” Alec told her. “You know what it can be like.”
“Yeah, I do.” Tess nodded in response. She didn’t really know what to say next, it was funny how a conversation with Alec could be so difficult nowadays. The woman remained in silence and looked through the windows. Could she get used to living here? This city was too small for her, she thought. But still, could she? This made her curious.
“How is Daisy? Is she adapting herself in school? In the town?” 'In living with you?', she meant. But Tess knew that her daughter might not answer all those questions truthfully. At least she hoped that Alec wasn't going to hide any matter concerning their daughter from her.

Alec hadn’t noticed that she had been watching him and smiling. He wouldn’t have as he had his back to her. Although while he was making the drinks, he had be wondering why she was actually here. He sat down and sipped his drink before looking at her. It really was uncomfortable with this silence.
Hearing her ask how he was, he leaned back in the chair he was sitting in. “I’m doing fine. I’ve been busy at work.” He told her. “I’ve been here for Daisy though.” He made sure to add that because she would make that as some excuse that he wasn’t there for his daughter. He looked at her. “How have you been?” He asked.
The woman nodded as he answered, but her head stopped right when he said that ‘he had been there for Daisy’. She looked down to the cup in her hand and took another sip while looking up to him. She knew she wasn’t really able to hide her suspicious face, but his words made her defences go up. One of the main reasons why everything happened between them was because Alec was never there. There was always on a case, always at work. He lost so many things with Daisy that the same furious feeling that emerged when her daughter told her she was going to live with Alec came back once again. He had never been there for her. It was not fair that the girl chose him over her own mother.
Tess cleared her throat, trying to be as calm as she could. Or could transpire. If what he said was true, well, it was really a good thing. But after the announcement DS Ellie Miller made about the current case they’re working on, she doubted that he had been really there as he said.
“Well, I’m..” Lonely. “Fine.” I lost my own family and I think it’s not fair that I’m the one to be blamed.
“Busy at work as well. Haven’t done anything important lately." Pause. "Oh, and I saw Miller on TV. You’ve got a big case on your hands again, eh? How's it going?”

Alec didn’t even think that she wanted to see her room. He had just taken the stuff and put them in the room for Daisy when she got back. When he got back to the living room, he heard Tess mention the art. He looked towards the painting she was talking about. “I’m not really. Daisy and I decide this place needed a bit of colour so we got some paintings to hang up.” He said.
He went to the kitchen. Hearing Tess, he shook his head. “I can do it. I’m not going to collapse from the stress of making a cup of tea.” He said, kind of sarcastically. He made himself one as well as the one he was making for Tess. Once it was done, he came back in. Alec handed hers to her. “There you go.” He said.
Tess leant against the table and crossed her arm, watching Alec as he prepared them tea. She couldn’t hide a tiny smile in the corner of her mouth, but it was gone when he turned up to her and handed her one of the cups. “Thank you.” She replied and took a sip.
The tea was the one she was used to drinking, but one she hadn’t drunk for a long time. It was prepared just like she would prepare hers, but it somehow tasted different. Daisy used to say it was “daddy’s magical tea” when she was a little kid. Oh, that time everything was so much simpler.
It didn’t take her long to think all of this, of course, but the silence between the two adults was really embarrassing. She knew he wasn’t the one to break the ice in situations like this, so Tess gave it a try. “ So.. how are you? How is everything?”

Alec looked at the bag that she had in her hand, and the posters in the other hand. “She will be glad to know that they are here now.” He told her. “Daisy isn’t here at the moment though.” He told Tess. “She is over a friends house.” He said.
He knew he couldn’t just let her stand outside, as much as he didn’t want to invite her in. Alec opened the door a bit more. “Come in.” He said. Alec waited for her to come in and then closed the door.
Alec looked back at her. “Let me take those.” He said, as he took the stuff from her and went to put them in Daisy’s room. He came back into the living room. “Would you like a drink or anything?” He asked her
“Oh.” She sighed at his response. She didn’t think of the hypothesis that Daisy could not be home. The thought that she had come there for nothing had already popped up on her mind when he invited her in. Tess was surprised. Well, not just surprised in that matter - she was also a bit happy that he was being at least polite to her but still, there was this uncomfortableness in the air around them.
“Thanks.” She replied as she walked in. She let him take the stuff she had brought and waited. Honestly, the woman expected to see her daughter’s room. She turned around and looked at the house her family was living in. It was a good house, some simple and beautiful decor. Way better than the previous house Alec had a couple of years back. She was staring at a painting on the wall when he came back talking to her.
“Didn’t know you had a taste for art now.” Tess pointed at the painting with a somewhat playful look. “And well, I’m fine. But you know I never refuse a cuppa.” She shrugged with a soft - but true - smile. “Though can make it, if you want."

Alec was at home. He was back early for a change. Not that he was complaining or anything. It was great to be back home instead of sitting in his office. He had got back hoping to spend this time with Daisy, but that plan went out the window when he got back to find a note that she had gone over Chloe’s place. He sighed and sat down.
He sat there for a moment, before deciding to make himself something to eat. Ellie would probably think he hardly ate, just by looking at him, but he did. He got to his feet to make his way into the kitchen when he heard the knock on the door. He frowned. Looking over towards the glass door, he noticed who was standing there and frowned.
Alec made his way over to the glass door and opened it. He stared at her. “What are you doing here, Tess?” Alec asked her. If she was here to see Daisy, she was out of luck.
So many things passed on her head by the sight of him. A part of her wanted to apologise, another wanted to give him cold gazes and short answers. He had a part in what happened as well, she wasn’t going to feel guilty. She promised herself she wouldn’t.
“I’m here to see Daisy. Brought a few things she left behind.” Tess lifted the bag in her left hand a little bit. “And some posters she had in her bedroom.” She showed the papers in her right hand. “ I thought she might… miss it.”
After fourteen years of marriage, it was weird to stand distant from him that way. Her body wasn’t fully used to this and it seemed like an invisible force was telling her she should go and hug the man. But she made sure to not show any of this in her expression.

The wind tangled her hair as the woman stared at the sea looking for some courage. She had been to Broadchurch very few times in her life, once when she was a kid and after when Alec had his heart surgery. She could see why her ex-husband hated it and that she could start hating it herself if she lived here.
The reason why was she standing here today was because she wanted to see her daughter. Tess missed her little girl, but she didn’t know how to show up in front of her like nothing had happened. Daisy moved to her father’s house after the constant fights she and Tess had once the girl found out the reason her parents had divorced. Daisy found out it was all her mother’s fault and that she had misjudged her father all along. She didn’t want to follow or hear anything Tess had to say, and their convivence was really difficult.
If there was one main consequence Tess regretted about her choices in the last years, this was it. She wanted Daisy back.
Walking down the street, the former Mrs Hardy stopped right in front of Alec Hardy's house and looked through the glass door, some papers in one hand, a small bag in the other. She took a deep breath and knocked, forcing herself to smile.
