For Mother's day my dad wished me a "Happy Mother's day to my favorite daughter" and instantly sent a text correcting to let me know that he meant to add Lisa @greenleelifestyles as a favorite daughter, as well. So for Father's Day she got my dad this fun t-shirt. He loves it. So somehow I went from being an only child, so by default, the favorite, to sharing my spot with my best friend, for the last 30 years. That's okay... she appreciates him for the awesome fella he is. One year ago today,June 4th, we added this sweet knucklehead to the fam. This little short & legged boxer mix had a rough start and was abandoned at dumping ground down in Oklahoma. He still has summer off and timid habits and it's already v he suffered some sort of abuse before he was abandoned in the Sooner State. We rescued him, FKA Duncan from Hope Animal Rescue if Iowa. He got to be fostered for a month by Angela Sadowski Rodriguez. I can sure he misses her. Rawle or Rawls named after my grandma Fran's favorite singer, Lou Rawls. She loved his smooth velvet voice. Willis and Rawls have become pretty great buddies now. Rawle is still a little hyper for Bill, and often drivers him a little crazy, but Willis whines anytime he goes in a different c room. Rawle cleans Willis's ears every morning. Anytime Rawle does get to go somewhere without Willis the first thing he does when we get back is he runs over all excited and "tells" Willis of his adventures. Rawle is the sweetest, not the smartest, but an oh-so-sweet boy. He is always ready to play and get into some mischief. He is for sure not the brave protector my Willis was and still tries and wants to be, but he brings us lots joy, snuggles, and laughter. He's clumsy like me. It's pretty funny really to such a non-graceful dog. This fella is like the princess and pea and fluff the pillows for what seems like forever and goes around in circles to get oh so comfortable. every time you make the bed he messes the pillows up right away. Even in his dreams...I swear he laughs out loud. He's never met a dog he didn't like. I'm looking to many years adventures with this silly guy. Gotta Love my great grandma Elsie's sense of humor. she's so right. when times are tough you've got to be innovative, work hard, resilient, and try to find the light at the end of the tunnel. My great grandma Elsie was my kindred spirit. she was funny, love to write, loved to study our family's lineage and past those stories on for generations, she danced to her own beat, and unapologetically spoke her mind without ever being intentionally hurtful. Elsie was a humble and hard-working woman. What she didn't mention in here, out of respect for my great grandpa Al, was that during that time she was also a strong-minded businesswoman and selling insurance. according to the census she was making more money then all of the men in her neighborhood. Elsie, what's an educated woman and got a bachelor's degree at what is now Iowa Wesleyan. A true feminist before it was on trend. My Elsie, a true trailblazer. So, it sounds as if we're all kind of all over the place with different emotions. I'm not for sure if you have this book My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss yet...if not go ahead and order it today. It's awesome. A great tool and it's a fun read. I think it's a gentle reminder that we all have different feelings on different days. I'm not in a bad mood, or sad today, but I'm not feeling my vibrant, outgoing, exuberant self by any means. One of the Dares in Empathology was to share a picture and here's my challenge I took off my mask of always needing to be bright, bold, always on and always daring to stand out, and all put together and up to my mom's satisfaction and standards for my appearance. It's rather humerous though I say that I am casual today when clearly I'm still in some sparkly sequin jeans with shiny shoes and plenty of jewelry...and my badass Empath #AllTheFeels hat from @theLolapickett and Tigre. But hey this is pretty low-key for me. My best friend told me a while back when you are not fancy I know something's wrong. So today I let my guard down and I don't have to try to impress anyone, make apologies, or make excuses. Today I may not be perfect by appearance standards and that's just fine. It's good to switch it up and to be the experimenter and just be comfy cozy. So this is me on a dull and calm (not my norm) day. I'm just going with it. Even my dogs are just a little chill today. Wow, we woke up to freezing rain and ice covered trees, blades of grass, and bushes this morning in Iowa. Thirty degree weather called for hot and comforting stew. As a seventh-generation Iowan and the first of my family do not live on a farm I carry with me a bit of melancholy. I've always known that my ancestors knew better. well some may enjoy the hustle and bustle of City Life that has never been for me. I live in a medium-sized town here in Des Moines, Iowa and it's a lovely place and been an easy place to raise children. However, I've always known that something was missing by not being able to be away from it all, being able to live off of the land, understanding what the smell in the air meant, being able to foresee certain changes coming soon in the weather. While I know more than many, I have so much to learn. Times like these have certainly caused me to pause and speak out loud to my ancestors. because I come from good genes who live longer than most I've been blessed to know many members of my family. We are storytelling family, who has always known the beauty in oral and written history and I am grateful for this... as it is truly a treasure. I encourage you to take pause right now and think about what you could be doing differently to be more self-sufficient and to be more friendly to the environment. I encourage you to speak out loud to those who have transitioned and ask them questions for guidance. Some you may have never known. Many you may not even know their name. Quiet down, and listen just like these farmers; as they have wisdom to share.
