SOURCES FOR SLAVIC OFFERINGS
─────────────────
Slavic paganism is objectively a very hard (some would say impossible) religion to reconstruct or revive. There’s not much surviving data and contemporary sources mentioning practices of ancient Slavs are few (so few that they were fit into a single book „Sources of Slavic Pre-Christian Religion” by Juan Antonio Álvarez-Pedrosa), far between and typically heavily biased against them. We do possess significant amount of archeological data, which however proves itself notoriously hard to interpret. Luckily we also have access to centuries of records about Slavic folk customs. While chronological distance between ancient Slavic pagans and modern Slavs described in those ethnographic sources can be quite large the living traditions of Slavic culture prove very useful in completing fragmentary ancient data.
”Using folkloristic sources may be helpful in creating a possible context for archeological findings. If used critically, they can sophisticate and nuance our interpretations. In the context of Slavic culture, using east Slavic folklore sources seems to be exceptionally valuable, as they are still relatively undiscovered and understudied. Another argument is that the Eastern Slavs were under the influence of the Orthodox church, which had a different (more liberal) impact on their folk culture than Catholicism in the area of Poland.”
- Sacrifices among the Slavs: Between Archeological Evidence and 19th Century Folklore by Izabella Wenska
This is equally true for study of the specific aspect of Slavic paganism that are offerings. Information provided below comes from a mix of medieval sources contemporary to the last Slavic pagans, archeological discoveries and folk customs. I would like to disclaim that this blog post is by no means an exhaustive explanation of Slavic practices of offering and sacrifice. Nonetheless I do hope that it will provide the readers with some new knowledge and inspiration.

The Slavic Myths About The Creation Of The World
Tumblr media
Myth 3 - The World Tree
It was once at the beginning of the world -
Then there was no heaven or earth,
No heaven no earth, just a blue sea,
And in the middle of the sea on an oak tree
Two pigeons were sitting.
Two pigeons on an oak tree
They were having such a meeting,
They advised and cooed:
How are we supposed to create the world?
We'll go down to the bottom of the sea,
We will carry out fine sand
Fine sand and a blue stone.
We will sow fine sand,
We will pick up the blue stone.
Made of fine sand will be the dark earth,
icy water, green grass.
From the blue stone blue sky,
blue sky, bright sunshine,
Bright sunshine, bright moon,
Bright moon and all the stars

The Slavic Myths About The Creation Of The World
Myth 2 - The Cosmic Egg
Tumblr media
God sends a rooster to lay and egg which creates the earth, or Mother Earth Mokosz carries an egg with her, when she drops it the egg cracks and 7 rivers pour out of it .
Or
The World Egg was created by either Swaróg or Rod. In one version of the myth Swaróg rests within the egg or simply opens the egg himself at first. As Swaróg’s power grew the egg cracked open. From its shell came the earth and the sea. Then the World Tree grew from the egg, pushing irs shell to the heavens and down into the underworld. With the egg’s golden powder and his fire, Swaróg then created mankind, all living things, and then the sun and the moon.
(Wyraj in Slavic mythology is what they called the paradise and Nawia was the underworld)

The Slavic Myths About The Creation Of The World
Myth 1 - The Earth Diver
Tumblr media
In the beginning there was nothing but the sky and the sea, The White God (Białobóg) who sailed in a boat, and The Dark God (Czarnobóg) (who later became a metaphor for the devil) rising from the foam of the sea and sitting next to God. The idea of creating the Earth was suggested to Whitegod by the Blackgod, who could not do it himself. The Blackgod submerged himself and pulled out a handful of sand from the bottom. Whitegod threw it on the water and created the beginning of the Earth so thin that both of them could barely fit on it. Whitegod and the Blackgod inhabited the Earth, the Blackgod planned to push the sleeping Whitegod into the water, but this contributed to the expansion of the land on Whitegod's side, on the east, and on his own side, on the west. The two creators started a dispute, which ended with God (Whitegod) departing to heaven and throwing down the devil (Blackgod) who also went there, with lightning into the abyss.
Tumblr media
They weren’t all powerful beings in Slavic mythology, and really only credited with the creation of the world and then guiding people on earth to do either good or bad.
