I’ve seen one or two people online talk about how they feel like the author of Skybound does not care for the characters he’s writing, or that they feel like he doesn’t understand why people like Transformers.

That all sound like valid criticism. Readers want to feel like the author cares about them. There is a time and place when an author can kill a character.

When I asked my mom this she said “well they’re the author. They can do whatever they like.” And while yes that’s true, most character death needs to MEAN something. Either in how it progresses the story, how it effects the other characters, or affirms another character. Death in the real world doesn’t always mean anything, but that’s not how it works in fiction. You need to make the readers feel like the death was necessary in some way to tell a story.

My point is, this author has some SERIOUS balls on him. He’s very bold. I’m intrigued to see where he goes with this and I hope it’s all for a reason.

THE FUCKING DEER SCENE. THEY HIT ME WITH THAT SHIT IMMEDIATELY???

The context of it is INSANE. This is an animal, and Optimus has no idea what that is yet! Animals don’t exist on Cybertron and as far as he’s aware, this is just another native of Earth.

Spike says it’s okay, probably thinking it’s just an animal, but Optimus doesn’t see it that way.

The way Optimus describes the ground mad met heart move in a way I didn’t know was possible. The way he says such a simple thing with such wonder and awe and poetry is just. Wow. Fuck does this comic do a good job showing how Optimus loves Earth thus far.

I know Hound isn’t in this comic, he’s in a different one, but I wonder if he sees the world a little like this. He’s a fav of mine so I hope so.

Optimus blaming himself for something he couldn’t have known / has never experienced before.

Interesting that the Autobots have words like “brothers” and “family”. I’m guessing it’s more like “brothers in arms” and found family, but interesting nonetheless.

In Prime, Optimus says when asked what he fights for, “A human concept. Family.”.

Interesting to see what words the Autobots share and what they don’t.

The length of Cybertrons existence is a lot shorter then what I’m used to. I’m used to millions and millions of years of history. Optimus can’t be much older then 300.

One thing I will say is that this comic does a lot of things very fast. The pacing is a little intense. It kinda feels like getting bombarded with one tragic thing after another and not letting it breath, but that may be due to my faster reading (despite trying my best to be slow

This holds a second meaning because Optimus helped this kid by giving the hospital power.

This kid is pogging off. Real. The little air punch was actually so cute, average reaction to Optimus Prime.

I like how this kid was so shy and a little meek and the moment Optimus turned into an awesome truck he began acting like a normal kid.

Ratchet has a point, the humans here were incredibly rude and destructive, but Spike was caught in a mistake. Say what you will about the other folk, but Spike was innocent. As well as everyone else in that hospital.

Poor Carly. I’m glad Cliff is there to help. He’s genuinely becoming a bit of a shining light.

A clan? What kind of world WAS Cybertron before all this? That’s the first time I’ve heard anything like that in canon Transformers media.

A man who previously hated them opened up to him, showed how similar they were, and sacrificed himself to save a stranger. Sparkplug trusted Optimus to protect his son, his PLANET.

You can tell a lot from a story from how they characterize Optimus Prime, and lemme tell you this is a GRADE A OPTIMUS PRIME.

Final Notes:

Gotta say, I’m very pleasantly surprised. It’s only Volume 1 but I’ve already been very pleasantly surprised!

Bumblebees death isn’t super touched on, but I can still feel the weight at the beginning. It makes me scared for the future. The reveal that MANY Autobots are dead hit me like a truck (shut up).

SKYWARPS FUCKING BODY DESECRATION WAS THE BIGGEST TWIST. What the FUCK. Both my reaction images were just reacting to that because I had no words. He was so silly???? And then just???? HUHHHHH??

Soundwave and Starscream are delightfully and horrifically evil. Starscream more so but Soundwave definitely isn’t even the slightest bit better. I’m very alarmed by his much more active role in ripping Skywarp apart and punching Optimus. Probably due to Ravage being less then okay.

Starscream is HORRIFIC. Sorry fellas, this guy needs to die! His pure delight at squishing humans is something I have never seen but also makes complete sense and I hate him for it/love the concept. He’s horrible and stupid but so powerful and authoritarian that he’s a huge threat.

Cliffjumper was a surprisingly shining light in the darkness! I knew he would be something like that but I didn’t expect it to be so effective!

His friendship with Carly is awesome and I adore the dynamic! I want more of them! The section where Carly is able to stop Cliffjumper from running into danger and reminding him that small guys like them needed to be smart was an incredible moment. Carly’s always been smart and Cliff needing to learn how to be smarter about things is a great arc!

Optimus is fantastic. I love his role as the new protector of Earth. He loves it more then even Sparkplug, who said he can’t see the beauty in it anymore.

It’s thrilling and nervewracking knowing that the other Autobots are more skeptical about humans, and humans aren’t exactly doing many favors for themselves (at first).

The Decepticons are a terrifying threat and I’m dreading what they do to the world next.

The back of the comic says it best. Humanity’s only hope is Optimus Prime.

I’m rewatching Transformers Prime after a decade, it was my first piece of Transformers media and it really changed my brain chemistry as a kid.

But holy SHIT I DID NOT KNOW IT OPENED LIKE THAT????

Spoilers below:

I knew Cliffjumper was gunna die but I did not realise they did it was so soon! And the whole thing felt like a horror movie where I knew what was going to happen and I was just screaming to get it over it.

They open up IMMEDIATELY with Cliffjumper and Arcee chatting and we quickly grow attached to Cliffjumper. He’s the first one we meet and he gives such main character energy. He’s cocky and fun and we hear him in the middle of a story about how he scared some cops while we can hear Arcee role her eyes fondly over the comms.

They do such a good job getting you immediately hooked on the first character you meet, with his awesome design and fun personality, only for him to get JUMPED and dragged in front of some cricket ass looking motherfucker who kills him without HESITATION. Even beaten up, his last words were throwing sass at Starscream.

I really understand why people grieve Cliffjumper and make him alive in AU’s. I wanna see more of him! And he’s just DEAD??? DAMN! I remember now why I have such strong emotions tied to Cliffjumper and Arcee.

Off topic, but I read somewhere that Arcee was originally meant to be Chromia but they changed it due to Arcee’s popularity, and I don’t know if that’s true but GOD do I see it. Prime Arcee is iconic in my head but it would’ve been cool if Chromia had this show as her time in the spotlight.
