I just finished the first episode of the chosen and I really like how they set it up. By focusing on Mary Magdalena and some of the apostles, and I feel like they manage to humanize them in a good way. And especially with Matthew i can see why he will choose to follow Jesus. And I like how Andrew and Simon Peters storyline interconnects with Matthews and I think they even walk past Mary Magdalena at one point. And then Jesus is just in the last scene but we immediatly get that thats Jesus even though he doesnt introduce himself. But Mary Magdalena doesnt know its Jesus yet, but then he calls her Mary of Magdala when shes been lilith the whole episode, lilith the great female demon, that whole ending scene is great. Btw Simon Peter is the Peter right?
Oh I looooove the first episode! My friend you still have so much to see! The first episode, I think, is a beautiful summary of all the others episodes that will follow! And you're so right, I absolutely love how they humanize the apostles, how the humanize the friends Jesus makes all throughout his walk on earth.
Mary is a beautiful character, she goes through several developments throughout the seasons, it's really beautiful! As for Simon, Andrew and Matthew, I too love how intertwined their stories are! It gives conflict to the group after Matthew joins (as you will see later on) and allows the characters the grow into better people.
Also ah we all know it's Jesus like I don't think He would ever have to say His name for us to know ;-; He's so soft and sweet I cry every time.
And yes! Simon the fisherman is Peter. He's just not Peter yet >:)

The crew gets bigger and bigger! I’m drawing all the apostles/important figures in The Chosen! It’s still a work in progress but here we have the ones I already drew:
Tumblr media
Jesus and Simon Peter! Because of course Jesus can’t have a single moment of peace with this man around him.
Tumblr media
Ramah, Mary Magdalene and Matthew! They are studying the Torah together, be quiet! They have much to learn still!
Tumblr media
Philip and Andrew, probably discussing John the Baptizer’s fate in the dungeons of Herodes’ castle. Or maybe speaking about some of Jesus’ teachings. Who knows? No one is away to find out.
There are more coming! And after this one, I’ll draw the pairs that were sent off by Jesus. Hope you guys like it!

i'm not going to get into whether the gospels were written by who they actually say they're written by, or whoever wrote them knew very well what they were doing, but the way john and matthew write about judas compared to luke and mark is just so...,..,., brb screaming and crying
in luke and mark, who weren't there with the twelve, judas is portrayed as a one dimensional villain, pretty much just there to do the dirty work and then die. with the exception of mark 14:21 (it would have been better for that man if he had not been born) and luke 22:48 ("you betray the son of man with a kiss (because of love)" line), which are both just direct quotes said by jesus, judas doesn't seem to have any emotional significance whatsoever.
but matthew and john were there. matthew and john knew judas, they'd known him for three years at least by that point, he had followed jesus with the rest of them, he was one of them. in john and matthew's writing there is grief, there's something personal in their gospels that makes judas' portrayal biased not because of lack of further knowledge, but because of the way judas' bertrayal affected them.
matthew calls him the betrayer, he keeps reminding us of it, he says judas had been looking for an opportunity to do this. but matthew also writes of his remorse. writing a literal holy text, whether he knew what he was writing at the moment or not, he finds it necessary that people know what happened to judas, that he regretted the betrayal, that he tried to return the money.
and john, we see john try to find an explanation and swing back and forth between saying "oh, yeah, we knew from the start, when judas suggested we sell mary's ointments he didn't care for the poor, he wanted that money for himself" (even though when jesus said that someone will betray him everyone wondered if it would be them, nobody said "well it's clearly that judas guy, he's weird") and "he must've been possesed by the devil he would never do that it was satan".
matthew and john are writing all of that while trying to process the loss of someone that used to be their friend without ever getting any closure. the disciples had all followed jesus together, they'd found something in him but also something in each other. jesus knew everything, he knew judas was going to betray him, he knew his reasoning for it, he understood, he loved him regardless, but for the rest of them it was one second they were all eating together, and the next that he turned on them, and before they could get any explanation for it he was dead.

Watching Judas in the Chosen is so bittersweet. Especially the scene where he is talking with his sister in the episode "Homecoming". It's so strange to think about him as not just a horrible, almost comical, evil figure that he became in my head when I was a child. He was a person. With a heart. Who smiled. Who was once a baby whose parents had high hopes for. He had dreams and hopes. And all I've seen from him in this series so far, he is such a "nice" person.
Who was it that said that part of being a Christian is learning to love Judas? Truer words are rarely spoken.

Hey! I wrote a fic about the finale of Season 3! Here, take a look! Lemme know what you think!
Summary: They all remained still, until Simon’s sobs had ceased, and the noises he made were gentle and quiet hiccups. Jesus still held him tight, as he repeated the same words again and again: “Don’t let me go… please don’t let me go…”, like a wounded animal seeking mercy from a stranger, who could heal its wounds, and nurse it back to health.
