I am actually getting so fucking sick of people who say, "But minor x adult ships cause real world harm!" or whatever type of fiction they've chosen to target.

When you ask these people HOW exactly something completely fictional with proper content warnings can possibly hurt real people, you usually get some version of, "Because it will teach kids that those things are fine in real life!"

And they probably say that because they don't have anything better, seeing as this is the only excuse they ever give and it's an extremely flimsy one at that.

First of all, if a story has mature elements and has been properly warned for them, then kids shouldn't be reading them anyway!!! My brother got in trouble for watching The Matrix when he was really little because that movie is rated R! And it's so much easier to steal a physical DVD than it is to get through parental filters on an internet browser!! Are you telling me that even gen z's neglectful parents are still more vigilant than you??? You're going to BRAG that you're an awful parent to make your point????

And second of all, once again, it blows my fucking mind that this is used as an excuse so fucking often because it's such a terrible one!!! My brother, when he was VERY little and definitely still in the highly impressionable stage, managed to play counterstrike behind our parents' backs, and surprisingly, ✨magically✨, he did NOT grow up believing that real terrorism is cool and fun just because that's how the game portrays it, and if a wildly successful VIDEO GAME that is essentially pro-war propaganda can't teach you that bad things are good, how can some random fanfiction on the internet COMPLETELY shape your morals to match exactly what you read???

It's so fucking transparent that these people don't care about kids; They care about fiction existing that makes them feel icky in a place they could end up coming across it and they think their sense of disgust is akin to a moral compass.

Okay, forced-birthers are actually starting to drive me insane, so let's break it down, shall we?

The first "pro-life"ers were actively sterilizing black women and indiginous women against their will. The reason they started the "pro-life" movement against abortion was because they wanted a reason to force white women to have more babies, likely to combat the legal protections women were fighting for at the time including making marital rape a crime and allowing women to have their own bank account seperate from their husbands (so men couldn't just rape their wives to get more babies anymore). It's not about protecting children, or nobody would have been forcefully sterilized.

Did you know Hitler had a breeding program where he recruited blonde-haired blue-eyed women to have sex with Nazi generals so they could have more babies with "desirable" traits? Probably not, because you think of Hitler as some nebulous "bad guy" who did things because he was inhumanly evil and not because he was driven by an extremist ideology created by GENERATIONS of cultural antisemitism in Europe.

If "pro-life"ers really wanted to stop abortion, they would target the reasons why people get abortions and minimize those things. For example, the reason why most people get abortions is due to fears that they wouldn't be able to give that new child a good life, or of putting them into a bad situation, so to reduce those reasons, they should be advocating for better WIC benefits, affordable childcare, and putting more resources into improving poverty rates and housing the homeless. Those things really do bring the abortion rate down by a lot, but they aren't doing that, because abortion isn't really the point.

"Pro-life"ers claim that abortion is murder, and yet they never explain why removing a fetus from your body counts as murder but just not having sex in the first place isn't. What is the actual difference between eggs/sperm and embryos that makes you care about one like a person but not the other? If you say, "Because embryos can become a person." Note that eggs and sperm have that quality too, and embryos OFTEN simply die on their own because they aren't strong enough to implant into the uterine wall. Claiming abortion is murder makes about as much sense as saying that not implanting an embryo into someone via IVF is murder.

BODILY AUTONOMY PEOPLE!!! If my sister was dying in the hospital from bleeding out, and I was the ONLY person on earth with a match for her blood type and she would DIE without a blood transfusion, nobody can legally take my blood from me without my consent. That is the point of bodily autonomy as a fundamental human right. Even though blood transfusions are a fairly safe and quick prodecure, even though I would barely lose a thing from it, even though it wouldn't be very taxing on my body, nobody can force me to give blood against my will even to save the life of a whole-ass fully-conscious human person.

We can't even take organs from corpses unless they consented to donate them while they were alive, even though that person sure isn't using them anymore and it could save so many people's lives to take those organs anyway.

And you want people who can get pregnant to not only accept this total loss of their fundamental human rights, but for circumstances that are much MUCH worse; The act of giving up your body to something that acts as a parasite, that leeches off your blood supply freely and without abandon, that makes you weak and sick and causes terrifying complications that can even lead directly to an early grave, all in the name of something that can't even think or feel the way a fully-formed person can.

Most people at least try to make exceptions for people in really bad circumstances, fuck even Bitch Shapiro says that abortion should be allowed if the mother's life is in danger, but these people just can't seem to conceive of the fact that pregnency is inherently dangerous. EVERY pregnancy threatens the life of the person who is pregnant. Fuck, childbirth used to be the #1 cause of death for women, and it sure ain't a picnic today even with modern medicine.

Not to mention that the legal system is far too slow. Imagine a world where you have to consult a judge and go to court in order to determine if it's okay to kill in self-defense if a murderer is attacking you. Months go by. The lawyers talk to each other, thoroughly detailing all the legal ramifications of the circumstances. Finally, the judge declares, "Alright! We've determined that killing in self-defense is totally justified here! Go right ahead!" And then he looks down and sees a corpse that has been decomposing for months because the murderer already killed them and they couldn't fight back without the legal OK.

This may sound like an extreme example, but this is the situation for lots of pregnant people whose doctors have told them their fetus is not viable. It won't survive, and the pregnant person won't either without an abortion. They go to court about it. Months go by, months that this person does not have, specifically because abortion is only allowed if the pregnant person's life is in danger and the incredibly slow legal process needs to be the one to determine if it would be legal in a world where abortion by default is illegal.

People should be allowed to make their own healthcare choices. If my blood supply is directly hooked up to another person in the hospital who sucks me dry until I'm sick and in danger myself, if I rip the cords out of my veins because I can't stand being sick giving everything I have to another person and that person ends up dying because they don't have my blood, is that murder? Or is that just me deciding that I can't handle someone else using my body against my will?

The "pro-life" movement is a movement that doesn't think your body belongs to you. It sounds incredibly rapey, doesn't it? You have to give your body for the sake of another person, and if you have a problem with it, well, sucks to be you. You can't decide what happens to your body. You are not in control of what happens to your body. Your body is the property of the state.

"Pro-life"ers are not pro-life. They are not even pro-fetus.

They are pro-forced birth.

So the new itch.io guidelines are out and they are both predictably bad and also quite unpredictably bad. There's so much to go over here but here are some of the highlights:

First we have the broadly worded content restrictions. So much of this is just strictly bad for several reasons (for example, you cannot have a NSFW game that doesn't even fetishize rape but has rape be an important thematic element under these new rules) but my personal favorite is that these are so broad that huge swaths of content are just banned from itch.io. You like VNs of monster girls having sex? Sorry, but your favorite spider girl VN is animal-related, we cannot prove that you don't want to fuck spiders so its gone.

Game where you can transformed by magical artifacts and sometimes fucked? Sorry, that's non-consensual content. Banned. You cannot be transformed into a maid against your will. You also cannot have your protagonist call an older woman "mommy" because likeeeee that's incestual right?

itch.io right now is just not a safe platform for NSFW content, and honestly, it really should be said, a fair swath of SFW content too. Don't use it, find alternative ways to survive in the market right now.

Which still sucks because they can still access the stuff I post, which I wouldn't be surprised if they did since they clearly love going places they aren't supposed to

And I'm not delusional, I know teens will ignore content warnings or age restrictions and read away to their heart's content. I did the same thing at that age. But oh my god, at least don't post publicly about it where the author can see?? Don't comment on the fics talking about how young you are?? Don't contact the author about it personally?? To tag onto this, if people truly can’t empathize with pedophiles let me just say. Where do you think the line would end? Especially since practically everybody I see who says this makes a point of including “non-offending pedophiles”.
