S - Someone is shouting in his ear. It takes a moment to fully process that the shouting is words, real and solid and separate from the usual drone of whispers and screams and whimpers. It takes a further moment to identify the foreign words as his name.

L - Like Orpheus and Hades, this is his deal with the Devil, his one chance to escape. He has a sickening but certain feeling that if they get caught now, there won’t be another shot out of here.

E - Edwin does not deserve him, but Charles has always been selfish. He will stay by his side until Edwin inevitably realizes he’s not worth it. As long as Edwin wants to stay, he’ll protect him and their little corner of the universe until the most distant of stars are extinguished and he fades from existence.

E - Edwin Payne is destined for Hell; he has known it since he was young. He’d escaped his fate for 35 years, running alongside a boy with a soft smile and sparkling eyes the colour of amber who had, once upon a time, offered him the light of a lantern. Now, Hell has finally come for him.

P - Patience and gentility, a disappointed tut and a quick tongue directed towards the worst of their customers but never him; shy eyes avoiding his own and a blush rising over ears at praise, insecurity dodging around any affection he could offer; careful hands working their own magic to protect him while he hoped his skills would be useful.

S - Sure, Edwin is sharp and blunt and prickly with customers, and maybe he talks about Hell more than some people are comfortable with. But Charles knows him. Edwin is not, could never be, a bad person.

A - “Are you saying that you’ll let us be?” “I’m saying that souls tend to find their way to wherever they belong eventually. People vary– eternity varies. Everything has its place in the universe. If you are truly happy where you are, perhaps this is yours.”

F - For a while, he’s content. He has his afterlife with Charles, full of jokes and warm memories. He has their agency, good deeds to save him from Hell. He has their office, a home for the two of them away from the rest of the world.

E - Edwin was content to love Charles in all the ways he was allowed, and everything else wasn’t important.

T - Then they meet Niko. She is lovely and sweet and painfully alive, and she needs their help; she is already helpful and within just days of meeting her, he can’t imagine their little group without her soft charm. She is quick and gentle and when he talks to her he finds a sad girl with loneliness in her eyes and kindness in her heart.

Y - “You came all this way, for me?” he asks, all but crying still.

B - But the other part was frozen in place by the abrupt realization that this condemned boy who had walked through Hell was the same divine boy who had offered him a lantern without hesitation and had stayed with him for hours just so he wouldn’t have to die afraid or alone.

R - Right. Hell. Escaping. “Yes.” Charles agrees. The smoke has thickened and his nose tickles with the smell of burning coal, and he knows their time has almost run out.

A - After an eternity, Charles draws back. He can’t bring himself to let go of his best friend quite yet. Edwin’s hands are similarly left to hover around Charles’s shoulders, trying to fix a collar that is no longer there.

K - “Kashina. My friends call me Kashi.” “Sure, that, whatever-

E - Every inch of him is black and blue, his torn nightclothes covered with enough blood and dirt that they could hardly be called white anymore, his fists purple and aching and covered in other peoples’ blood, but with Edwin’s hands fussing over him, he feels a bit more like himself.

W - When he pushed himself off the ground, Charles was gone. The thing is, Edwin Payne is destined for Hell. He has known it to be true since he was young. He avoided his fate for 35 years, running alongside a boy with a soft smile who had, once upon a time, offered him kindness in the light of a lantern.

A - A blush is climbing Edwin’s ears as he stutters through excuses. Charles just laughs. His heart burns and he’s never wanted to kiss anyone more than at this moment. But this is Hell, and nothing good can come from Hell.

V - “Very well, then.”

E - (Eurydice has already been doomed, Orpheus has already turned back). Edwin’s hand is cool, in Hell. Solid. (Charles Rowland will never be anything more than a tragedy.)

R - Red light and thick black fumes fill the space stretching between the two. The demon’s hazy limbs curl tighter around his waist and his ankles and his skin burns red and raw.  A familiar hopelessness begins to shroud his soul. Hell will not soon give up its stolen prize.

‘Waver’ is deceptively difficult with that ‘v’. I had only one option and it’s kind of boring.

S - Someone wails behind him, a pained, primal thing. “Charles, go!” Edwin barely gives his shoulder a shove before they take off together.

H - Hours later, when he opened his eyes to a cold sunrise and his own colder remains, the angel was still by his side, reading some detective comic aloud to the dim room, empty but for two boys who lost their lives far too soon.

I - It takes a moment to fully process that the shouting is words, real and solid and separate from the usual drone of whispers and screams and whimpers. It takes a further moment to identify the foreign words as his name.

F - Faces are lost in the haze and shadow, voices are warped and sharpened until they draw blood. Bodies are too close and only pull closer, the metal constricting and tightening around them like black iron lungs, until someone attacks.

T - The first time he was down here, he remembers thinking that he must have done something terrible in life to deserve it. The same terrible things that everyone around him saw fit to punish him for. He thought he must’ve been an even more terrible person if he didn’t even know what it was that he had done.

(Guys, progress has been made! For once! Not much progress, but still, progress.)

C - Charles smiles. He doesn’t see how Edwin’s world is being swallowed, the very ground under his feet washed away in the waves. He is patient and waits for Edwin to find the words. Charles rubs a thumb over Edwin’s tight fingers and he wants to cry. Edwin has been truly blessed to spend his afterlife with as divine a boy as him. He does not deserve Charles. Charles does not deserve him.

H - He wonders if maybe this is what it feels like to the ghosts they help, who take Death’s hand and ascend in soft blue light and the shadow of wings: a kind embrace surrounded by safety and warmth.

I - It rubs at the edges, pulls at loose seams, steals dropped pieces, and lets things fade under bruises and scars and pain. It burns holes until faces are indistinct and feelings are just out of reach.

C - Charles Rowland is an angry boy. He always has been; he always will be. Yet Edwin cares about him. Edwin protects him.

(Charles has never had anyone to love him before. He’s never had anyone to protect him.) A - And it was him. As the smoke drifted away, Edwin’s face came into focus, and he might as well have been glowing like an angel, rings of ethereal eyes and all, for how welcome the sight was. Cheeks flush, front splattered in blood– not his own, thank god– standing so close Charles could feel the tickle of quick breaths on tear-stained cheeks. He was vaguely aware of his own mouth falling open like a dying fish.

N - No red at all, just pure, beautiful blue. He lunges for a window- (Need to go, get out, get home, get back-) A weight lands on his shoulders. Pale hands take purchase around his throat, red acrylic nails dig into flesh, drawing blood-

E - Edwin’s hand is on his face as he wipes a bit of red from his cheek. His eyes shine with sincerity. “Yes, Charles.” He promises, and he takes a breath that neither of them should need, “You have me, remember? For forever. For as long as you’ll have me. You, Charles Rowland, are my best friend, and you always will be.”

Thanks to @ahyperactivehero for tagging me for a second time, with the word WINGER (a term I did not know before, so thank you for building my vocabulary)! I’m actually so impressed by how many times you’ve been tagged in these things (fourteen times is insane). I can only hope.

(Once again, these are all from one fanfic. No, I have not made much progress. 🥲 Perhaps if I keep getting tagged in these, I’ll finally finish with it in a decade or ten.)

W - When Charles glances up at his friend, he’s almost surprised to see his face drawn into a scowl, eyes now narrowed at the demon with a look of righteous determination and all-consuming hatred. The expression doesn’t belong on Edwin. (Whose visage stares back at him, he wonders, to put it there? Who could deserve such hatred from such a kind soul?)

I - It isn’t how he expected it to look like. There are no gates of fire, no brimstone and torches, just stairs, descending painfully slowly into the abyss.  No screams of the damned fill the air; the deep silence is filled only with the far-off cries of gulls and the echoes of his now-corporeal footsteps.

N - Niko is lovely and sweet and painfully alive, and she needs their help; she is already helpful and just clicks within just days of meeting her. She is quick and charming and when he talks to her he finds a sad girl with loneliness in her eyes and kindness in her heart. He finds a friend. (He’s not very used to friends, is he?)

G - “Get him back, and we’ll go with you. I promise.  You can bring us to the Lost and Found, we’ll be processed, and we won’t put up a fight. And he can go to the Heaven he’s meant for.”

E - Edwin’s hand is on his face as he wipes a bit of red from his cheek. His eyes shine with sincerity. “Yes, Charles.” He promises, and he takes a breath that neither of them should need, “You have me, remember? For forever. For as long as you’ll have me. You, Charles Rowland, are my best friend, and you always will be.”

R - Really, Edwin is just brilliant. So brilliant, and charmingly stubborn, and good, and he managed to escape Hell once even without the magic he now has. Edwin saved him when he was dying alone and he was the one who started their detective agency. Edwin is so perfect, but Charles is just… broken. Edwin doesn’t need him tagging along. Why would he want him back?

This one was surprisingly difficult. Initially, I didn’t have anything at all for G or R, but I had far too many choices for E and N (most likely due to having two characters with names that start with those letters).
