Every Lion King Canon

The Lion King (1994) + The Lion King: Six New Adventures (1994) + The Lion King 1 ½ (2004)

Overall story: Scar killed Mufasa but framed Simba for it and forced Simba to leave the Pride Lands so Scar could become king, only for Simba to return as an adult and challenge Scar's place on the throne. Simba wins and has one cub named Kopa with Nala, his childhood friend turned partner.

Scar's original name was Taka. He and Mufasa were biological brothers under Ahadi. Since Mufasa was older, he got more attention from their father and was to inherit the throne as his birthright. Taka was overcome with jealousy and provoked buffalo in attempt to get them to attack Mufasa, only for them to attack him, resulting in his scar.

The Lion King Broadway Musical (1997)

Overall story: The plot is mostly the same as the 1994 film, but with several added subplots and new songs. Rafiki is reimagined as a wise female mandrill who serves as narrator. Scar’s reign is given more depth, including an attempted seduction of Nala when she questions his leadership, prompting her to leave the Pride Lands to find help. Timon and Pumbaa provide comic relief but also deeper emotional beats. The show expands the cultural world of the Pride Lands through ensemble numbers like He Lives in You and Shadowland.

The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride (1998)

Overall story: Simba's heir is now a female called Kiara, who accidentally ventures into the Outlands as a cub and meets Kovu, Scar's chosen heir. Separated for years, they meet again when Kovu saves Kiara from a fire with the intention of getting close to and killing Simba to avenge Scar, but instead falls in love with Kiara and grows fond of her family, causing him to turn against his Scar-worshipping family.

The Lion Guard (2015)

Overall story: Simba now has two cubs; Kiara, the future queen, and Kion, gifted with the unique power of the Roar. Kion leads the Lion Guard, a group of animals designated to protect the Pride Lands. However, the biggest threat turns out to be a semi-resurrected Scar, brought back by the animals in the Outlands who seeked control and freedom over the Pride Lands.

Scar's original name is Askari. His relationship with Mufasa is barely touched on, however, it's still implied they're biological brothers and Scar was jealous of Mufasa. Scar used to have the Roar and led the Lion Guard, but he let the power go to his head and lost the power by misusing it. He got his scar when a cobra bit him while partnered with a mysterious lion who promised him power.

The Lion King Remake (2019) + Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)

Overall story: Present story is mostly the same as the original, only Simba has Kiara instead of Kopa, as well as a currently unnamed male cub.

Scar's original name is Taka again, but this time, Mufasa was adopted into his royal pride on his recommendation. They grew up inseparably close, but were forced to leave before Kiros came to wipe them out. While running from Kiros, they meet Sarabi, Zazu and Rafiki and form a group on a journey to Milele (later renamed the Pride Lands). Taka is slowly tired of being constantly outshined by his brother, and his feeling tips over into heartbreak when Mufasa and Sarabi fall in love. Blinded by rage and pain, Taka sides with Kiros temporarily and leads him to Mufasa, but turns back and saves him again before it's too late. He got his scar while taking a hit meant for Mufasa. Mufasa defeats Kiros and is named king of Milele.
