In Through the Looking Glass Ruins, Gus has been lamenting that Illusion magic isn’t particularly useful for anything more than “party tricks.” Now obviously he’s wrong, as both he and the Blight twins have been seen using illusion magic to create things ex nihilo (the attempt to capture the Slitherbeast in Adventures in the Elements, the “Hex Me” signs in Escaping Expulsion, the buff flytrap in The First Day, Gus’s physical cutting-class duplicate in Something Vintured, Someone Framed) but, at first glance, those seem to be a bit more ephemeral and impermanent as opposed to, say, construction coven earth-moving. People from other covens seem to look down on illusionists, mocking their lack of power.

Except that illusionists—and especially Gus, because of his social circle—might have the capability of becoming the most powerful goddamn spellcasters on the Isles.

Bear with me.

Whenever a witch casts a spell, they do so by drawing a glyph. They aren’t aware that they’re doing it—it seems instinctive. In fact, many witches don’t seem to be able to SEE glyphs the way Luz can. However—and this is important—the glyphs do not seem to care what medium they are drawn with. Moreover, unlike direct spells, they draw from the ambient magic of the island, not the bile of the witch, meaning more and stronger of them can be cast in quick succession without causing fatigue (such as in The Intruder).

Eda and Lilith have proven capable of seeing the glyphs once Luz draws them for them. Thanks to her analytical mind, Lilith can chain glyphs together for truly spectacular effects, and Luz has proven capable of outright inventing new spells as long as she can break down the glyph-writing rules. The only limit to what glyphs can do seems to be imagination, and how fast and how complicated you can draw them. There’s obviously a trade-off: more complicated glyphs require more time to draw.

Illusionists can draw things instantly, with no medium requirement. It goes straight from the brain to… just about anywhere they want. And Gus is so smart, so creative, and so good at illusions that he skipped two grades.

Based on these facts, I believe that, once Luz teaches Gus the rules of glyph-making, he’ll be able to outright bypass the illusion coven mark by casting illusions of glyphs. If I’m correct, he would be able to cast extremely complicated and extremely LARGE spells and glyphs instantly, bypassing the primary limitation of the technique. Moreover, each illusion would require significantly less power from him than directly casting the same spell, as he’s only powering the image—the island is powering the result. Meaning he should be capable of truly STAGGERING feats of magic that no one, other than another illusionist, could match.

posting on tumblr is like carefully placing your work in the middle of a dark abandoned factory, and slowly a bunch of weird little goblins manifest from the shadows and touch your work all over with their little raccoon hands and share it with each other. sometimes they find your thing again many years later and excitedly share it again
