In our family we believe food should be simple, approachable, and unpretentious. Meals around The Compound and our home aren’t instagram aesthetic, yet I promise, if try the recipes you’ll be glad you did. Generations of recipes that sustained our family all neatly packed in his book with just a touch of his trademark dry humor. It’s more than a cookbook, it also contains a few of our family canning recipes 🙃🙃. He says his next undertaking will be to extract all the canning recipes from the family books of wisdom and letters left behind by the ones who went ahead to Heaven before us. Let’s make a late evening dessert and have it for leftovers for breakfast. 2 c milk 4 c water 2 tsp Vanilla Pinch salt 1 tsp cinnamon 2 c farro 2/3 c brown sugar 1 pint home canned apple slices drained and sliced in half Bring milk water salt vanilla cinnamon to simmer Add apples. Bring back to simmer. Add farro. Bring back to simmer and cover, continue at simmer 25 mins covered. Remove lid continue uncovered 5 mins. Turn off heat. The most common mistake we see in instagram gardens is overcrowding of plants. Can some plants do just fine this way? Absolutely and yet squash won’t . Planting squash too closely is a recipe for disaster. Powdery mildew, blossom end rot, squash bug and vine borer paradise, soil depletion….the list goes on. Rotation: Take a note from our ancestors, history, and our own gardens plant in patches not rows. This makes rotation easier and proper rotation aids in replenishing of the soil. You know we always speak on interplanting herbs as a pest control, squash can especially benefit from the ones mentioned here. Powdery mildew is your nemesis if you’ve planted too close together especially 😵‍💫 but you can face it head on with a tbsp of baking soda, tbsp of Castile soap, and gallon of water. Mix these together and spray on your squash to kick powdery mildews butt across the season. Squash are heavy feeders- they benefit from following nitrogen fixing legumes along with the leafy greens. “A garden speaks for itself” If you’ve been around here on our page a few years (or just scrolled back, then you have seen our gardens tell their story. Bushel baskets roll in by the day and the garden gets put up all summer long. “How do you not have horn worms?” “How do you get so many tomatoes?” “Wait you don’t have aphids?” “Do you have any garden pests at all?” We don’t have garden pests, weeds, or soil disease problems because we take steps all year to prevent that. * Pro Tip: Don’t ever compost your spent plants, no matter what instagram tells you* We give our tomatoes drought resistance and a strong start by planting them 2/3 the height of the stem deep. I know you gasped when you saw the pinch of tobacco added to the planting hole because instagram and google probably told you not to do that. Can well over 100 years experience convince you otherwise?? Tobacco is a nitrogen provider as well as a pest repellent. Not handfuls. Just a pinch to boost off the plant. Everyone preaches about suckers but no one seems to know the old way of pruning tomatoes involves much more. We aren’t growing bushes folks, we’re growing tomatoes. If you aren’t familiar check in with our OG followers whose yields doubled after learning that trimming suckers is cute but pruning other branches makes more fruit. Feeding & interplanting herbs- Dill attracts hornworms. Plant it in your tomato rows and you’re drawing the hornworms into your rows. We don’t have hornworms (not even on our dill) because we take other natural measures across the year to prevent all garden pests but we want you to know as a new gardener what Dill actually does.
