In case you didn't know there's a coffee shop down on Blanco that loves arts and  culture. It's called @brightcoffeesa and they rolled onto the scene in February. Last night they showed their love with an opening exhibit of several talented individuals who are going to be on display for a month. @alyssabeardart shows a range of aesthetic interests with works of realistic city scenes right next to paintings of imaginative realism. And you've got to see the details in those cityscapes. 😊 @uhuru_aevum , who is already no stranger to the concept of mixed media, is starting to experiment with incorporating new materials. Shiny materials. And you know how much I like shiny stuff! 🙃 Kaldric Dow, Mr. Art Man Himself, was showing the latest installments in his ongoing journey with combining collage and his considerable talents in figurative depiction. These were just some of the Artists in the exhibit. The management of the establishment is enthusiastic about supporting the Arts. It's a great space for artwork with a cool vibe. They're very open to new ideas about exhibits and events. Confession to make! I've been a bit remiss in my postings this year. With a lot of things. 🙃  For the past several months I've had the joy of experiencing one of the greatest things that artists can do. On the last Tuesday of every month I've been attending the @alrightdrawnite nude model sessions at brick. The sessions are managed by everyone's  favorite, @artmatterssa , who tries to provide every sort of comfort that she thinks a fellow artist would need while drawing. There are free art supplies to borrow. There are chairs, sofas and easels to use. There is food. There is even live music! The drawing sessions are usually from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. There are always two models for the night, one female and one male, who are usually very experienced. The lighting is arranged for maximum effect and efficiency. There are usually art instructors on duty directing the timing of each pose. The poses range from one-minute for warm up gesture drawings to thirty-minute detailed drawing experiences. Since I've been flakey with not posting my drawings lately, I'm showing ALL of them now. I usually just grab an 18" x 24" pad on the way out the door and anything laying around. I'm VERY rusty! 😁 Big plus: you can run into some interesting people there. I've had the pleasure of hanging out with Angela, Cody, Kyla, paashka and Jeff. On Sunday afternoon I decided to brave the heat again. It was a momentous occasion. Down in the King Williams Historic District, @saartleague was presenting an exhibit by the Gentileschi Aegis Gallery Association (GAGA). The exhibit "Summering at SAALM" was a huge and enlightening affair featuring the works of 60 of GAGA's impressive over 100 - strong all women membership.  It was a delightful and stunning array of artwork. While enjoying the delightful visuals I had a chance to run into some of the cool people that I know. @ilna_art discussed the advantages of membership in SAALM. @artbyronney exhorted the merits of participating in out of town art festivals. @proximityartmedia engaged my attention with the history of GAGA. I also had the chance to meet a few of the fascinating artists in both organizations. Some of them were names I've been seeing in galleries for years but never met the individuals in person. Saturday night was hot hot HOT!  The temperature was blazing and the artwork was amazing. I waited until it was almost dark to brave the 100 degree weather to see Second Saturday. However, A lot of San Antonians did not. If they had, guess what they would have seen? @symonemartinez_art was having her solo exhibition "Headspace" at @southtownartgallery . Fantastic figurative work combined with mandala-like designs in her determination to depict The Divine Feminine. And, as always, great conversation and great Art with @trebla_art . Across the street I was able to see the work of the pop-up by @meechiceramics . @rojo.etc was showing an exhibit by @_piramide_ called "...And will be again." Around the corner, I was treated to the bright, texture-filled and meaningful work of two wonderful artists over at the @lonestarartdistrict . @dockspacegallery was hosting the work of @crisescobar1958 . Dock Space Annex was exhibiting the visuals of @medellinloretta . I got in just before @billfitzgibbonsart could close up. 😁 I ended the night in the best possible way for such an outing. Last night was the culmination of an event long in the making. It was the premiere of NINE. It's the brainchild of fellow Artist and @xula1925 alum @onefishstudio and Leah Glenn, the very first tenured African American Professor of Dance from the Department of Theater, Speech and Dance of @william_and_mary the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. NINE is a collaboration that was commissioned by a joint venture between @thecarversa , Xavier University of Louisiana and the National Performance Network.  The performance was a riveting melange of Dance, Visual Art, Poetry and Music. You were sucked into the engaging storytelling of the movements of the Leah Glenn Dance Theatre. You were delighted by the Art of the set pieces and costumes designed and created by Steve Prince. You were moved by the accompanying music that bore so much resemblance to Negro spirituals. The project was done in recognition and celebration of the Little Rock Nine and the harrowing and historic struggle these young Black children had with the forces of Segregation. NINE'S amazing nationwide circuit began Saturday night and will end in a year after it's fifth city, New Orleans. It was during the usual greetings and reunions that take place after such a  performance that I did my usual round of group selfie indulgences. Friday the 13th! Always has been the luckiest day for me. It was the night of the Meet the Artist show at @found_consignment . Featuring guess who me. I had the Matriarch series on display and a few pieces from a Majestic series. And, trust me, all that black, white and gold went very well with the ambience. I even dressed to match my artwork. 😉 With a high quality environment and high quality visuals you can, of course, expect some high quality people to show up. I was treated to the presence of such wonderful personages as @uhuru_aevum , Rachel Wilkes, @golden , @Kaldric Dow, Paul Vaughn, Ruth Rodriguez, Cody Vance, Caroline brooks, William Gaskins, Michael Lister and Paul Dzwonek. I even had a few students show up to check things out! You have to come and see this place when you have a chance! Found is the auxiliary of Pilot House Inc., a social enterprise dedicated to the overcoming of addiction.  Pilot House operates sober living homes for people who are repairing their lives. OMG - What a weekend! It's time for the 14th Annual On and Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour. Festivities kicked off Friday night with the Autograph Party at Bihl Haus Arts. Guests were treated to an Art Exhibit with accompanying live music and food and drink by the pool. All of the Artists were in the exhibit and on hand to sign catalogs for the guests. I could be seen frolicking and merrymaking with such talented individuals as Elia Zepeda, Michelle Love and Santiago Martinez. Saturday and Sunday I was lucky enough to be stationed at the home of sculptor Cody Vance. It was a great time hanging with great artists! I met Kyla Vance, Cathy Sporer and Ann Gonzales. My tent and setup in Cody's gorgeous sculpture garden yard received some pretty cool visitors, such as Ilna Colmere, Gabbe Grodin, Kim Bishop, Luis Valderas, @davidartistsa and @uhuru_aevum . You know that thing where you have an idea - or inspiration -  and then you get started on your painting or your piece of Art and then, like, Life comes along or, you know, maybe an idea for another piece of artwork or something.... But the point is you get pulled off into something else. You're an Artist, so you know what I mean. 😉 The main thing is: you end up leaving behind lots of unfinished pieces. This is what I'm looking at today. I'm looking at all of the things left to do. I guess you could say I'm "taking creative inventory." Last night was the night everyone had been waiting for! It was the Artist Reception and Artist Talk for "Queen," my exhibit of Fine Art at @spcwatson . It was another chance at exposure for my "Majestic" series and the very first public viewing of the latest body of work, "Matriarch." What better place for such a presentation than @gospc - San Antonio's very own HBCU. I was dressed for the occasion, wearing the appropriate Black, White and Reflective Gold to match my artwork. 😁 But that wasn't the only treat for guests. There were refreshments, a musical performance by an actual quartet and my talk on the unusual history of my art education and how it relates to my art career and my work. Some great people came through - Becky Tipton, @proximity , @sabra, @alethia @angela and @justin. There were a few of my fellow saeas members and even a few present and former students in attendance. The exhibit will remain on view in the Morgan Gallery until May 6. All of which would not have been possible without the untiring and herculean efforts of my magnificent friend Nicole. Yesterday was @blackexcellencenight at the @attcenter ! I was invited to be the Sponsored Artist of @chase by awesome Community Manager, Patricia "Becky" Guajardo Tipton. I was recommended by none other than Dr. Bridge Builder, Shantana Robinson of MFAD Creative Group. I set up shop with prints of the two painting series from the upcoming April 12th "Queen" exhibit at @spcwatson . I had a chance to hang out with some of San Antonio’s top people. La Juana Chambers Lawson was there representing @growthistacit . @chris.b.ogba and @uchennayaogba from @ehcupr came through. @stashceo , chairman of @africanamericanchambersatx served as moderator for a panel discussion on how diversity and inclusion are affecting african american business affairs in San Antonio and Texas. I even had a chance to meet the creator of Black Excellence Night, @watchdeework . Originally started in Dallas, this is the first Black Excellence Night event in San Antonio. Last night was my return to First Friday at @bluestarartscomplex . I knew exactly where I wanted to go. I made a beeline straight to @flightgallery . I knew that @davidartistsa was going to be exhibiting his collection of plaster masks.  When he first told me he was working on it I was astounded by the concept and knew it would be a profoundly significant visual event. "United Collective" uses 600 plaster masks to show us the amazing similarities we have when we shift our attention away from our differences. It's about harmony. But not creating harmony. David's showing us the harmony that's already there. Afterwards, I went down to @bluestarart (which I haven't done in forever!) and checked out the other galleries.
