I remember seeing a ring on Barnes' finger and thinking he was married and then this.

Poor Barnes, trying to tie up loose ends before he completely loses himself, looking over his will just as Jim, his proxy son, the prodigal son, comes home after it’s too late.

Father figures are an important community in Gotham.

Gotham 3.07 and 3.09.  Jim’s hallucinatory car journey with his dead father neatly foreshadowing his car journey with Barnes - another doomed father figure.
