Soft steps padded from under the stair archway,* and there she was.

The faelights gilded Elain's unbound hair, making her glow like the sun at dawn. She halted, her breath catching in her throat.

One, this is poetic as hell, which we should know to expect from mister "I don't need to resort to poetry."

But two? I love the dawn imagery Azriel used, which is suggestive of hope, change and light; that he sees in Elain a chance for a new beginning.

One of which he doesn't currently dare to dream.

*Side note but I've just realised that the "stair archway" reads like a GATE omg 😳 iykyk. Still hoping my thoughts about Elain and her magic leading to the land's rebirth/travel "places" will come true.

When do you think azriel started developing feelings for elain? In acofas, his face still lights up when he sees mor. Then he looks at her with heat and yearning and blushes when she gives him her present.

Hi anon! I hope you don't mind that I'm going to steal this for @elriel-month "New Beginnings," but it's perfect, so.

It's hard to say when Azriel may have started to develop romantic feelings for Elain - imo he and Elain certainly showed some sort of attraction at their first meeting, same as Cassian and Nesta - but, personally, I hope it will turn out to be a case of he fell in love by degrees, so slowly he didn't realise it was happening until he was in the middle of it.

Opinions differ on this for sure, but to me that seems the most natural way for two people who - if canon is to be taken at face value - had existing feelings for others at the start of their friendship (though of course Azriel's were unrequited, and Elain's became so after she was Made).

What I would love to read is that, after Nesta and Cassian had their tif in ACOWAR, Azriel went to the human realm instead, where he and Elain struck up a friendship, having tea and chatting in her garden. Bonus points if he sneaked in to see her at the House of Wind, when Nesta wasn't on guard duty. It would make Azriel offering to take her to the garden like a "full circle" kind of moment. 🥹

We've only had a few glimpses of Elain and Azriel - the quietest of each sibling set - from the others, but they radiate a calm sense of self and belonging when they're around each other, and I can't wait to (hypothetically 🤞🏻 lol) read their relationship from their own POV.
