Edible, invisible “peel” helps produce stay fresh for up to five times longer than normal

Nothing stinks (literally) like rotten produce. Roughly half of the produce in the U.S. gets tossed out and wasted.

One inventive company hopes to put a dent in that statistic by coating produce with a protective and edible “peel” made from food scraps.  

Apeel Sciences, a California start-up that’s backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has developed two types of edible protective barriers that could revolutionize the produce aisle.

One “peel” called Invisipeel is applied while crops are in a field while another “peel” called Edipeel is applied after farmers harvest crops.

The power of Edipeel lies in the “micro-thin” barrier that rests on top of the peel of produce like avocado, James Rogers, founder and CEO of Apeel, said in an email.

“This barrier protects it from abiotic stressors that cause fruits and vegetables to spoil, like water loss and oxidation, as well as biotic factors, like bacteria.” Read more (4/19/17)

Milan Morris used her prom dress to honor Trayvon Martin and the Black Lives Matter movement

Florida high schooler Milan Morris and designer Terrence Torrence knew they wanted to make a statement at the Pahokee High School prom in Pahokee, Florida. But rather than go for just some extra glitz and glam, the two worked on a dress armed with a powerful statement on police brutality, its victims and the Black Lives Matter Movement.

To prom this year, Morris, 17, arrived in a black lace dress covered with a collage of faces of just some of the most famous victims of police brutality, including Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland and Michael Brown.

“Yes I’m black. Yes I’m 17,” Morris wrote on Instagram. “Yes GOD is using me to convey a message that’s bigger than me.” Read more (4/24/17)

Today an astronaut broke the record of for the most cumulative time spent in space by an American! Earlier this morning, astronaut Peggy Whitson broke Jeff Williams’ record with her total being 534 days, 2 hours and 48 minutes. She was also the first woman to become commander of the ISS (International Space Station) and completed the most spacewalks performed by any woman, having done her eighth one last month. She also happens to be our Monday motivation!

            !!!!!!!!PLEASE HELP TO SPREAD THIS!!!!!!

Gay men in Russia are being rounded up and put into concentration camps.  I’m so beyond upset and I’m asking you to help spread this information in hopes that it will bring this disgustingly horrible situation more media attention and put additional pressure on Russia to investigate these camps and shut them down.

There is a petition to stop the persecution here and the Russian LGBT Network has a donation page here (it looks pretty legit to me and is associated with a Facebook page with 12,000+ followers, but if anyone can find more information confirming the validity of it that would be beyond appreciated.)

These men are all the way across the world but they’re part of my community and they need our help. They don’t have the same luxuries (basic human rights) that we do and they are in desperate need for us to help speak up for them.
